This episode is about “From being a Korean immigrant to a national nurse practitioner leader🇰🇷/ How to become a leader as a non-native speaker.” In this episode, I welcomed my deeply admired colleague, Dr. Sun Jones. Dr. Jones is a family nurse practitioner (FNP) in Arizona. She obtained her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees from Arizona State University. Dr. Jones is an associate professor at the University of Phoenix and also practices as an NP at a family practice office. Although she grew up in Korea and had to overcome the language barrier, she has been recognized as one of the distinguished clinicians and faculty members in the U.S. and received the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Fellowship award, which is one of the highest honors NPs can receive. Dr. Jones holds multiple leadership roles, including Arizona State Liaison for the AANP and Executive Director/President of the Korean American Nurses Foundation. This episode is about “How to overcome insecurities in building a nursing career.” In our nursing career, we must learn many, MANY new things☝️ For example, in nursing school, we had to learn how to talk to patients and build a rapport with them in a minimal time. In a nurse practitioner (NP) program, you learn how to choose the proper medication for a specific disease. Even after successfully graduating from an NP school, you must learn how to build a patient panel as an independent NP. When we face new things, it is natural to feel insecure about ourselves, but in those moments, we may get really frustrated and feel embarrassed about ourselves😣 I was born and raised and started my nursing career in a non-English speaking country (Japan), so coming to the U.S. to attend an NP school and practicing as an NP threw me many new challenges that I had to overcome👩‍⚕️ Eventually, I mastered them💪 From these experiences, I’ve learned five things we can do to overcome insecurities when facing new things. This episode is about “MSN vs DNP: Which NP programs to choose?” If you are thinking of becoming a nurse practitioner (NP) in the U.S., you should know that there are two types of NP programs: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs🧑‍⚕️👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ As you might have guessed, you will get a master’s degree when you graduate from an MSN program and a doctorate from a DNP program. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties called for moving to the DNP degree as the entry-level preparation for NPs by 2025, which is this year!😳 But in reality, this effort has not been completed yet, and both programs still exist.
