Brian Bergstrom was hired as the new Winona State University football coach back in December of 2021. He joined WKTY’s Grant Bilse thanks to Mulligan’s Pub — your Warriors headquarters. The two discussed offensive coordinator, Isaac Fruechte, a Caledonia native and former Minnesota Gopher who was signed by Minnesota Vikings in 2016 and spent a stint on the Detroit Lions practice squad. In the 1987 state title, which Winona lost 13-7 to Moorhead, Staats had a state record 21 solo tackles. He went on to start all four years at the U of M and mentioned he did have Paul Bunyan's axe in hand.

Karl Klug was a senior when the Caledonia dynasty started back in 2005. The year they lost a state title to Eden Valley-Watkins. The very same team his Warriors play at 1 p.m. Friday for a state title.
