Today Mark has seven point blank questions he puts to Dave.  Join us for some serious straight talk about what to expect over the next 12 months. Look around you Mark.  Pick a country, a nation or group of people.  Evil in one form or another is battling good.  Hamas is abusing Palestinians.  Christians are being killed by the thosands in Nigeria.  America is still aborting children by the millions.  Yes..there are protest everywhere…but most of them are protest led by dark leaders with the intent to shut us all up and into submission.  We are behind enemy lines!  The body of Christ regardless of where they reside, are surrounded.  This battle between good and evil is happening NOW regardless of whether or not we are ready for it! You asked in your question, should we be worried.  Simple answer is revealed in a single scripture verse.  There are more scriptures on worrying, but if you believe this one,  you don’t need another one. 2 Timothy 1:7  “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity (fear / worry / lacking courage or see-confidence / lacking boldness) but of power and love and discipline (sound mind/discernment/wisdom).  2 Timothy 1:7  We haven’t been given a spirit of fear and worry but a spirit of power, love and sound mind!  Do something with that! So the real question isn’t should we be worried, the relevant question is…knowing what we know…what should we be fighting for or against and why?  That’s the relevant question. We are fighting for:   Justice, fairness, holiness, servitude, goodness, healthy relationships, trust, honor, integrity, honesty and truth We are fighting against:  Injustice, corruption, selfishness wrong doing, unrighteousness, sick, twisted, liars and deceivers Why?  Because that is God Will for each of us.  We are all called to  stand for these attributes of character…attributes of Christ.  So if you’ve been joining us the past few weeks, we took a little off road excursion and turned up the mountain to inquire about angels.  In episode 279 we took a look at why are there some many references in the Bible about angels visiting God’s people and what could we learn from what they were told.  Why do scholars refer to these events as ordinary angelic messengers?  If they are so ordinary, why don’t we hear more about these encounters today? In last weeks show, I dug a little deeper and opted to take a look at some of the attributes of these angelic messengers…with the hope that maybe, after studying “the messenger process”, I might better understand how to engage with an angel when it’s my turn.  If you missed these two shows, I recommend you go back and listen to them.  Not only are the visits bizarre in many respects, they are EPIC…and I tried my best to bring that home in pondering each event. Okay, so last week I heard from a faithful listener who wanted to remind me that angels are indeed all around us…today.  He sited Hebrews 13:2.  “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.”  I concur with Mack and his reminder and thought it worth sharing. The Bible differentiates between the Holy Spirit and angels of the Lord primarily by establishing that the Holy Spirit is God, the third person of the Trinity, while angels are created, ministering spirits.  Deity vs. Created Being: The fundamental distinction is that the Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead and possesses all divine attributes (omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence). Angels, though powerful spiritual beings, are created by God and are not divine. Indwelling Presence vs. External Action: The Holy Spirit works within believers, providing a permanent presence, conviction, and guidance. Angels, by contrast, generally operate externally, appearing to people to deliver specific messages or provide temporary assistance in specific situations. Function: Angels are primarily messengers and servants who carry out God's commands in the physical world. The Holy Spirit has a more intimate role in the life of a Christian, serving as a helper, comforter, and the source of spiritual growth and gifts.  According to the late Billy Graham, “The Holy Spirit illuminates the minds of people, makes us yearn for God, and takes spiritual truth and makes it understandable to us.” The Holy Spirit IS WHO Christ left behind for us to accept when he departed for Heaven.  The Bible tells us that THIS VERY SAME SPIRIT THAT RAISED CHRIST FROM THE DEAD, DWELLS IN US.  Romans 8:11. We need Him in our life as a conduit to become who God created us to be, and through His power we have aid in all situations. Without Him, we are powerless. “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.””  Acts 1:8  “pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  1 Thessalonians 5:17-18  “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is LIBERTY.”  Liberty sounds pretty good to me!  That means NO BONDAGE by the way!    2 Corinthians 3:17  “And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.”  Acts 4:31  Send us a text

Last week's show was all about sharing that angels DID speak to regular folks back in Bible times and I asked why don’t they do that today?   DO angels speak to folks today and if they do how would I recognize their voice?  Do they all sound the same?  Do all angels have the same manner of communicating their message?   Do they have different gifts or specialties? What are some of the attributes of angels and what can we learn from the angelic encounters we covered last week? Let’s start with the Hagar story in Genesis 21:12-13. This is the Abraham, Sarah and Hagar story.  God is speaking to Abraham, and says “Do not be distressed because of the lad and your maid; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, (well lookie there…fellas…listen to your wives). Genesis 16:11-12: we learn that an angel of the Lord can see the unborn and can see what their destiny is.  Check this out. “The angel of the Lord said to her (Hagar), “Behold, you are with child, And you will bear a son; And you shall call his name Ishmael, Because the Lord has given heed to your affliction. He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone’s hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers.”” Here’s a bonus observation.  Even tho Hagar felt rejected, abandoned, mistreated and castoff, God blessed her and gave Ishmael his own nation. Let’s take a look at Gideons Encounter: From my perspective, it proved to be rather comical and unsuspecting.  It was conversational over lunch vs a booming voice from Heaven like Hagar’s encounter. Read Judges 6:12-15, 17, 20-21.  Then read Judges 6:36-40  “Then Gideon said to God, “If You will deliver Israel through me, as You have spoken, behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I will know that You will deliver Israel through me, as You have spoken.” And it was so. When he arose early the next morning and squeezed the fleece, he drained the dew from the fleece, a bowl full of water. Then Gideon said to God, “Do not let Your anger burn against me that I may speak once more; please let me make a test once more with the fleece, let it now be dry only on the fleece, and let there be dew on all the ground.” God did so that night; for it was dry only on the fleece, and dew was on all the ground.” Hezekiah's Prayer for Deliverance Highlights of Hezekiah’s encounter:  Hezekiah brought receipts; he told God to read it and he did.  His angel was an angel of action…deployed by God…no interaction with Hezekiah directly.  His angel killed 185,000 Assyrians over night. Read Isiah 37:14-20 and Isaiah 37:33-36 36 And the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these (the 185,000) were all dead bodies. Daniel had multiple encounters with angels.  Daniel’s angel had a name.  He explained why he was delayed in delivering the message, he was fighting principalities and preparing for the next spiritual battle.  In Chapter 8, a voice commands Gabriel to explain a vision to Daniel.  In Chapter 9, while Daniel is praying, Gabriel comes to him to deliver a divine message and explain why it took so long for the answer to arrive, due to a spiritual conflict with the "prince of Persia".  In Daniel’s case…Gabriel left the battlefield above Persia to deliver the Gods answer to Daniel’s prayer.   Daniel’s Angel was at war  against principalities / countries (Persia); they have back up; this stuff is way over our heads … but here’s what I do know…if you have a need to know…you’ll know.  Send us a text

 Can you read the signs of our times today?  In the midst of the tear-gas can you see the chaos building?  Have you seen the polls that suggest murdering political opponents is considered acceptable?  Have you heard that there is a price or rewards offered for causing trouble?  But on the other side of the street, you hear stories about revivals cropping up everywhere, from Australia to the UK.  Turning Point USA now has over 130,000 campus chapter requests to fulfill.  Meet me at the Water is baptizing folks by the thousands according to some reports. Something is happening! The bible verse that most directly discusses reading the signs of the times is Matthew 16:3, where Jesus rebukes the Pharisees and Sadducees for being able to predict the weather but not to interpret the spiritual and historical signs of their generation.  At the end of last weeks show, I mentioned that the phrase “an Angel of the Lord spoke” was mentioned 59 times in the Bible.   Both Mark and I thought that was a pretty significant number of mentions.  So I decided to do a deeper dive into this topic using AI as my search agent. Here's a few references. Exodus 3:2: "And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush." Genesis 16:1-13, 21:9-19 -- The angel of the Lord, Hagar, and her son Genesis 22:9-18 -- The angel of the Lord, Abraham, and Isaac Judges 2:1-5 -- The angel of the Lord rebukes Israel. Judges 6:11-24 -- The angel of the Lord and Gideon 1 Kings 19:1-8 -- The angel of the Lord strengthens Elijah before his long journey. 2 Kings 1:1-17 -- The angel of the Lord instructs Elijah what to say to king Ahaziah.     1 Chronicles 21:1-27 -- The angel of the Lord comes to destroy Jerusalem  Zechariah 1:7-13 -- The angel of the Lord mediates between God and Jerusalem. The Greek phrase angelos kuriou (angel of the Lord) is found in the New Testament, but these passages are generally understood to refer to ordinary angelic messengers, not the divine figure from the Old Testament.  Would you consider a word or visit from an angelic messenger ORDINARY?  Me neither!   I am more moved by the fact that Angels Spoke to people just like you and me.   Whether they were “ordinary angelic messengers" or the pre-incarnate appearance of Christ, to me is NOT THE POINT.  The most significant point that we need to ponder here is…DID WE LISTEN TO THE VOICE AND DO WHAT IT SAID?  Which begs the question…What is the Angel of Lord saying to us today?  What is He telling you?  What is the Angel of the Lord saying to ALL THOSE THAT WILL LISTEN, WHO ARE CALLED BY HIS NAME. I don’t know where you sit on this front, but I for one believe that when an “ordinary” or an unordinary angelic messenger speaks” we need to be listening with all our senses and willing to do whatever were asked to do. Have you ever suggested a "course correction" to God?  Today Mark will share a passage of scriptures in Matthew 16 where Peter tries to do just that, course-correct Jesus.  Jesus had just given Peter the keys to the kingdom, because Peter correctly answered the question "whom do people say I am?"   But just five verses later, Jesus calls Peter Satan.  Same conversation, same day.  Why?      When Jesus starts to explain His mission of suffering and death, Peter interrupts and says, "God forbid it.  This will never happen to You."  He tries to course-correct God Himself.  He's basically saying, "Jesus, your plan sucks, I know a better way."   Now, from our point of view, Peter wasn't being evil, he was being logical.  He wasn't being rebellious, he was being protective.  He wasn't trying to destroy a plan, he was trying to help.  But Satan's best work is often wrapped with good intentions.   Think about it.  Our procrastination can be disguised as the good intention of "waiting for the perfect moment."  Our forgiveness is delayed because "I'm protecting myself from hurt."  Our compromise is hidden under "trying to keep the peace."  Each excuse sounds noble, but it stinks of sulfur.   The real scandal is that Jesus knew Peter would stumble again; deny Him 3 times, abandon Him at the cross, run and hide after the resurrection.  But Jesus chose him anyway because broken leaders are better than perfect ones.  Born again rebels make the fiercest warriors.   Former "satans" can spot deception faster than perpetual saints.  Peter's failures became his greatest credentials.  He realized his "satan moments," when he doubted God, became spiritual foolishness.    So, when we try to edit or change God's plan, remember: we're not being wise, we're being Peter at his worst.  We're being exactly what Jesus exposed.  The difference between satan and saint is to completely surrender to God's plan.  Don't try to help it along.  Don't think you know better.  Just surrender and follow.   Send us a text

Today we are taking a break from the news.  September was a tough month in light of Charlie Kirk's assassination, remembering 911, Charlies Memorial, it was a heavy month. So today we are going to step back and find some encouragement in a book called Legacies of Valor: Traits of Character - The Noble & the notable. We closed last weeks  show promising to bring solutions for going forward.  And that’s what today’s show is all about.    Our Premise:  Reprimands have not proven to be a deterrent.  Serious consequences and pro-active common sense actions are.  Most of these ideas or solutions are actions We The People can do.  Not everything can be delegated to the government. -  The case for free speech, civil discourse and rationale debate works for those that are NOT lost…just confused.  Those that are “to far radical left” aren’t deaf.  They have heard the arguments.  They have simply chosen to stand with and identify as son and daughters of Satan.  - Until regretting Trans people (who have turned back to their God given gender) stand up to tell others to NOT make the mistakes they did, straight people will not be effective in moving minds.  We need to encourage those that have turned back to stand up and step out.  They need to share their stories on the news, on social media and TicTok.  Maybe TPUSA, Churches and Government agencies can identify them and support them in creating these video messages to the Trans community. -  Mental Health institutions need to be brought back, but not as lockup insane asylums, but rehabilitation facilities to help the troubled de-brainwash, discover the root causes of their gender dysphoria, and embrace their God given gender.   -  Sanctuary cities should not be funded -  Prosecutors need to stop releasing offenders like the guy that stabbed the Ukrainian gal.  Security on these public transit systems need to have confidence that riders aren’t crazy.  When a violation like this one occurs, the last prosecutor that waived his bail or sentence should be convicted for five years for negligence  -  Churches and Pastors need to revisit their youth curriculum.   Consider starting a TPUSA chapter as an alternative.  We cannot assume that the lower grades of education adequately or correctly educated our kids on American God centered values.   -  Students need to find the courage and SUPPORT to expose the err of their professors who spew hate and disinformation. They need us to lead by example.  Our kids are being brainwashed right under our noses and we are funding it.  Parents are paying annually for their kids to be indoctrinated. -  Likeminded parents should unite, divide the tasks and stay on task.  Attend board meetings, monitor professors / teacher classes, produce newsletter updates to other parents, local representatives, local news outlets. -  Schools, both college and high schools need exterior monitors, motion detectors that feed back to their security office where someone is on point for spotting suspicious activity (this is pro active) -  Soft Targets need to be hardened (light rail, subways, high schools, college campuses).  It’s unfortunate that we find ourselves in this position…I get it…but we can’t deny the fact that we are all behind enemy lines in 2025.   -  Retired X-military, former law enforcement and vetted conceal carry citizens should be hired to be the first line of offense.  We did engage Air Marshals for air travelers which has proven effective -  If the TPUSA movement continues to build momentum, and I hope it does, we will need to create a safe environment for our kids. My concern for the TPUSA students is that currently they are warriors behind enemy lines without a platoon for protection.  Our kids enlist to serve their country…and as parents we are concerned, but we have some assurance that they are flanked by fellow soldiers, air support, military overwatch to keep them safe. We need this assurance for the TPUSA students and others on their field of battle. Send us a text

Today we honor a fearless and uncompromising warrior.  A warrior for Christ and a warrior for civil debate.  Charlie Kirk stepped out of the boat and the ripple grew into a Tsunami Revival.  A movement that will change the course of history. These dynamics have not only led to Charlie's popularity, but is also one of the reasons God allowed us to witness the tragedy.  Millions more people have decided to get serious about their lives, to start reading their bible again, to go to church again, who decided to nurture a culture that promotes families, and commit themselves to doing good.  We are witnessing a miraculous positive change that would not have happened if Charlie remained in his position or passed away in a more normal fashion.   Rebukes have proven not to be effective.  Only consequences will address this issue.  The Charlie Kirk 47 Civil Discourse Act:   This proposed bill is intended to place and enforce real consequences on our representatives for behavior unbecoming of a representative of Congress.  For acts, statements or speech that insights hate speech or hateful conduct that could become actionable through violence by constituents, the representative (s) will be suspended from serving for 47 days without pay.  Any house votes or proceedings that occur while the representative is suspended WILL go forward, and their seat vote will default to the opposite party while they are suspended. Welcome to One Day Closer with Mark and Dave, where we are rekindling a spirit of hope and truth into today’s discussion. This past week, on September 10,2025, America and the world lost a voice to be reckoned with.  A voice dedicated to open civil discourse in search of connection and understanding. It’s impossible to highlight the life and mission of Charlie Kirk, husband, father and advocate for Christ Jesus, without admiration reference to his insight, vision, purpose, passion and dedication to our younger generation, the hope and future of tomorrows leaders.  Likewise, it is unfathomable to comprehend how or why God would allow such a voice of hope and reason to be silenced at such a young age. For those that had never heard of Charlie until news broke of his assassination, at the ripe old age of 31, Charlie Kirk had engaged and positively influenced a generation of young inquisitive students to examine their beliefs, their faith, their purpose, politics and policies.  He was and will remain our greatest advocate and example of the quest for moral clarity and civil discourse.  His legendary walk with Christ his Lord and willingness to serve as a voice for honest and open debate has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands and will continue to impact the lives of millions going forward. Born in 1993, in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, Charlie grew up in a conservative household.  As a teenager, he was an Eagle Scout with hopes of attending West Point, and later serve in the US Army.  But that wasn’t Gods call for Charlie. CNN and Wallstreet polls reported this week that over 4 million former democrats have switched parties.  They have decided to no longer believe what their party believes in…favoring and protecting illegals over legal citizens, a party who favors chaos over law and order, are protesting actions in DC to reduce crime and clean up the nations capital.   Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, cut her DNI department by 40%, eliminating Intelligence staff, that were politicized deep state actors and weaponized departments. DNI continues to expose bad actors that hid behind Top Secret Classifications to coverup Russiagate…including Obamas role. Cancelled 37 security clearances mostly unfamiliar names…backstage operators, leakers, propagandist, Russian gate Promoters, etc.  An appellate court has thrown out the $500 million civil fraud penalty against former President Donald Trump in the high-profile case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. Adam Schiff, Letitia James and another gal (I think she’s a DA), are under investigation of Mortgage Fraud! Over 700 arrested in the DC cleanup in one week.  91 illegal guns were taken off the streets.  0 homicides over last 8 days in a row as of Friday.  Car jacking down 80%.   Mark do you know the average age of a typical car jacker?  It’s  14 years old.  Do you see anything back asswards with this stat?  How about two years from being allowed to acquire a drivers license permit…to practice driving with mommy and daddy in an empty parking lot!   Here’s another observation…the majority of those caught are armed!  A 14 year old with a gun!  Isn’t that against the law?  Why is this so?  Any guesses?  They are 14 because the gang they are working for know that these young soldiers can’t go to jail until they’re 16! Meanwhile, government representatives continue to speak out and against illegal immigration deportations.  Assaults on ICE agents has increased 1000% since Trump executed his deportation plan. Update on the Auto Pen scandal: Former Senior Biden aide, sr spokesperson, Ian Sams, revealed he only met with Biden twice over a period of 2 years according to James Comer.  This could lead to over turning the auto pen pardons.  We still don’t know who the wizard behind the curtain was! Rick Scott out of FL is opening a Senate investigation on Gavin Newsom’s handling or lack of handling the Palisades fire in LA.  660 structure destroyed.  Gavin promised to rebuild.  Rick Scott is stepping up to address the lack of action.   Rick Scott as you know dealt with many natural disasters in FL so this guy knows how to get things done.  I guarantee you he will BBQ Gavin with his findings. What’s the meaning behind our shows Title…One Day Closer?  The simple answer is…Everyday we wake up with breath, we are all one day closer to either finishing our race here on earth, well or poorly.  Not to sound morbid, but none of us are guaranteed our next day or our next breath here on Earth.  Our bodies and our internal workings are an amazing self-contained tapestry of Gods handiwork.   Some of us treat our bodies pretty rough, especially when we are younger.  Consider the athletes, soldiers, body builders, laborers, construction workers.  These guys and gals push their bodies to the limit…and like a good old Timex watch…they keep ticking.  And on the bright side of things, as we make new resolutions, plan out our goals and desires for the new year, we are also one day closer to realizing our dreams, hopes, finding that right girl or guy to spend the rest of your life with, one day closer to prayers being answered and blessings and goals being realized. So why One Day Closer you ask?  Because whatever you have going on…when you wake up in the morning, you are indeed One Day Closer of being finished…whether the tasks at hand are completed or not. Our hope and suggestion by the way, would be to lock down your future enteral destiny done FIRST.  While there’s still time, choose Jesus.  You’ll never have to worry about “what if I get cancer, what if I get hit by a bus tomorrow or what if my heart stops working properly.”  None of that matters once you have your salvation / relationship with God right.  Everyday afterwards, becomes a blessing, a gift and a calling!  What our tag line means “To Rekindle a spirit of hope and truth into the crazy discussion of the day.”   Why?  So that we can all be WHAT our families, friends and total strangers need us to be…a voice of reason, hope and light in a dark world.  A voice that was unafraid to introduce a biblical perspective to the crazy news stories of the day. We were solely attempting to fulfill the calling of Philippians 2:15 - “so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world,” We started this podcast in October of 2022.  We felt millions of Americans (both parents and students) were loosing hope…were struggling with all the lies the administration was feeding us.   We both felt it was time to inject biblical interpretation and perspective into the crazy discussions of the day.   When we got wind of the battle over gender ideology (Erin’s story), drag queen story hour and gender affirming care initiatives, we spoke back to the darkness and called out the stupid.   Our objective was simple.  Help others snap out of the Covid fog of war, wake up from woke deception and find their voice and reason for common sense.  We felt it was time to expose that the monkeys had taken over the zoo…and something had to be done. And our closing reminders:  “Take a breath, Keep the Faith , Get in the Word…We all have a job to do, until we don’t.” Mark and I believe two basic premises:  Salvation is message ONE and is available to all who call on God and it is a requirement to enter eternal peace. Secondarily, we all have a job to do, responsibilities with accountability, POST-Salvation! Is it just me, or have you ever attended a funeral and just before they begin to lower the casket into the ground, the Pastor says something in closing similar to this…”and may God rest his Soul.”  Is it just me or have you ever thought that was kind of a weird thing to say. The typical thinking or association with this phrase, is that once our loved one is dead, gone and buried…then and only then will they have “rest for their Soul.” The truth is, their Soul, their Spirit is no where to be found at this stage of the proceedings.  Their Spirit or their Soul if you will, left this earth along with their last breath.  A more accurate parting statement would have been, “God rest his weary bones.” This misunderstanding or misuse of the phrase lead me to ask a few basic questions.  Can we have rest for our Soul WHILE we are still alive?  Isn’t that WHEN we need peace, comfort, reassurance and rest…during our time here on earth?  I believe the answer to both these questions is a resounding yes! But I wanted to make sure, so I launched a little study into this topic on the Soul using the YouVersion Bible app I mentioned the other day in our Therapist show, episode 263.  Within the app, I found several mini studies on the topic of the Soul and on The Spirit, that Christ promised to send to all of us upon his departure.  There’s a reason why Christ did so.  Because the Holy Spirit is our Comforter, Counselor, Strengthener, Revealer of the Scriptures, Convincer of sin, Caller of ministers and our Intercessor in prayer. These are things we need DURING LIFE…NOT AFTERWARDS. So one of the series that I found worthy of sharing was called “Soul Care.”  It’s in the YouVersion app but you can also find it and other contributions at www.whoisgrace.com/read. The Soul is the most important dimension of you. Your soul is the real you. In fact, Jesus claimed that there is nothing more important. “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and yet lose his very soul?” (Mark 8:36)  According to John 7:38, Jesus has a way to avoid this.  “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”” Not just “refreshing” water…but “living”, regenerative, water. Jesus’ yoke is an invitation to the life we ache for. A life that can be found only by moving through the world shoulder-to-shoulder with Jesus.  Your soul will be revived as you learn to live your life WITH God. The Holy Spirit serves as a teacher, counselor, comforter, strengthener, inspiration, revealer of the Scriptures, convincer of sin, caller of ministers and intercessor in prayer. So to summarize…death is not the rest we are promised…but rather it is the LIFE we LIVE shoulder-to-shoulder, side-by-side with the one Christ left for us to HELP us … the same wonderful, powerful, awesome healing and refreshing Spirit that raised Christ from the dead…IS the SAME SPIRIT THAT DWELLS in US!  This is the Soul we want to protect, nurture, fed and cherish. Today, you’ve entered Dave’s Wisdom Shack.  Here, you will hear things that you’ll never hear from your shrink AND you won’t pay a penny for it! So the Therapist says to her patient …”So what’s it going to be?  Fight or Flight?”  And the patient answered…”I’m still confused.  Do I fight my depression and flee from my anxiety or is it the other way around?”   And there you are.  Frozen between apparently, only two decisions, which introduces the last F response to the Fight, Flight or Freeze methodology therapists use to keep client/patients (you) in the loop cycle, stuck in the revolving door…going round and round, until the next visit. Anxiety or Depression.  Which comes first?   That is the question I asked of a very close friend of mine just the other day.  We had met for breakfast and it didn’t take long to see that something was deeply troubling her.  We’ll call this person Christy.  So I asked her, what’s bothering you sister? She told me she was seeing a therapist, which was a surprise to me, and that she was struggling to find purpose…”I’m just not happy and I don’t know who I am anymore.”   After some further discussion, she advised that the Therapist was helping her assess where she was in the Fight, Flight or Freeze three-way intersection.   For those unfamiliar with this line of reasoning, here’s the simple, layman’s explanation.  Say you’re confronted with a life or death situation on a jog through the park, when suddenly you are confronted by a mean (but dumb as a brick) man with a knife, that wants to rob you.  I describe this threatening man as “dumb as a brick” because he’s dumb enough to think you might be carrying all your cash in your spandex running attire.   But Christy wasn’t on a run, she wasn’t facing down an attacker…she was seeing a Therapist to help her process why she wasn’t happy and seemed to have lost her identity…or purpose.   So why would the Therapist think that understanding the Freeze, Flight or Fight concept would do Christy any good?  Why ask Christy “which one you going to choose?”  Maybe the Therapist was trying to highlight that once you chose one…she’ll be able to follow up with a question like…”okay so how would you flee or fight off your depression?” This might make for a good question.  Obviously, “Fighting off” your depression would make more sense than remaining “frozen or paralyzed” in it and I don’t believe it’s possible to “flee or run” from depression or anxiety.   The real question then is WHERE WILL YOU TURN TO FIND WISDOM, INSIGHT, POWER, STRENGTH and the ANSWERS to these FEELINGS and THOUGHTS you are wrestling with?  Stay with me..I’ll get there. Just for the record, I’m not a licensed Shrink, Psychiatrist, or Therapist.  I’m just guy in my late 60’s, with gray hair and plenty of life experiences of setbacks, heartaches and failures.   Which simply means I can relate.   This is how I got through my storms without a therapist.  I read a lot about stuff but most importantly, I read the Bible more in search for answers as to how to “live life,” post discovering salvation.   I focused on actions that brought me closer to Christ way of thinking…because it made sense, brought me peace and strength in the storm so that, I could move past it all…by simply changing my perspective.  I asked myself, do I really want to continue to pack all these past burdens, worries and fears with me as I move forward or begin my journey onward with no baggage and a lighter load.  I chose the latter.  Google pre-frontal cortex and read up on what it is and how it works. This past Monday, Mark shared some enlightening news regarding Artificial Intelligence.  I hope you listened to that show because it showcased a host of scams that are at play with this technology…scams that could wipe out your or your parents bank accounts simply because you or they didn’t know any better.   Whether you like it or not, AI is here to stay.   It should be noted from Marks show on the topic of AI, is that few CEO’s of AI companies are focused on “AI Guard Rails” to protect the public.   Which leaves us…the users of technology…to fend for ourselves. Several of the clips Mark shared in episode 260 on AI showcased how the technology is being used to create video messages that appear to be your son or daughter in a tough spot, or held captive in a dark and scary room…telling you in their own voice…that they are in trouble and they need you to send money straight away.  The video looks like your son or daughter and their voice certainly sounds like them, but it’s fake.  So how can you discern whether the message is real or not? Here’s our first TIP from a loyal and fellow listener of One Day Closer.  He suggested creating a SAFE word and a DANGER word.  This could be established with your kids as well as your parents or grandparents.  The idea is a simple one but can be very effective.  We’ve all seen an FBI show or a movie where someone goes under cover to infiltrate a mob Gand or a smuggling operation.  The person undercover is usually wearing a wire and their colleagues in the van outside are listening closely for either the SAFE word or the DANGER (my covers been blown) word, which serves to deploy the calvery, breach the building and “get me out of here!” Most of us normal folks don’t have these occupations and hence don’t need to think like this right?  Think again. Let’s say you get a video message.  Your daughter is leaving you a desperate video message for help or money, but in her message she DOES NOT use the DANGER word or phrase.  You’ll know right away that that is a scam, especially if you make it very clear from the start with your loved ones…why having this discussion about CODED Safe and Danger words is important.  If they don’t use them…you will NOT be taking any action on their behalf. Here’s a Universal Hand Signal for someone needing help.  5-4-0 It was developed several years ago but not everyone may know what it is.  It was designed to help someone communicate without speaking, that they are in trouble, being abducted and need help.  Most recently, I’ve seen commercials showing how this hand signal can be used by an abductee.  The commercial shows a guy walking down a busy street holding the gals arm (obviously to keep her from running away).  This leaves her other arm free to touch or slightly bump others as they walk by in the opposite direct.  Once the abducted gal bumps you to get your attention to look back at her, she displays the following hand signal behind the abductors back.  5 = A full open Hand; followed by the number 4 = four fingers; followed by a closed fist.  5-4-0.  This is the universal hand signal for someone asking for help.  Teach this to your kids.  If they do this enough when being abducted or they loose their voice, this simple hand signal could save their life.
