Welcome Carrie Wynkoop, CEO/founder of Oregon-only wine club Cellar 503--to the show. Recently named one of the top 10 wine clubs to join right now by Wine Enthusiast, Carrie launched Cellar 503 in 2014 after being entrenched in a political consulting firm as CFO. Carrie decided to follow her true passion mid-career: Oregon wine. Cellar 503 personally handpicks each wine she sends out to her members nationwide, showcasing unique varietals and undiscovered regions throughout the 19 AVAs in Oregon. The Portland Art Museum is pleased to present Paris 1900: City of Entertainment, a sumptuous look back at the City of Light during the prosperous years spanning the turn of the century. The exhibition, now open, will remain on view through September 8. Joining PDXISH to discuss this wonderful "Paris in Portland" exhibit is Dr. Mary Weaver Chapin, Ph.D., Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Portland Art Museum, and the curator of the PAM exhibit. Joining Dr. Chapin, is a friend of the show, Claudine Hemingway, a frequent visitor to Paris, and a contributor to Bonjour, Paris, a website and magazine based in Paris, France. The amazing, unstoppable force of nature, Storm Large, returns to Portland in the heavily anticipated 10th anniversary special engagement of her autobiographical, one-woman rock musical Crazy Enough, opening June 25 (her 50th birthday!) on the U.S. Bank Main Stage at Portland Center Stage. For our 75th episode PDXISH welcomes to the show Portland Center Stage's Associate Artistic Director Rose Riordan. The director of "Tiny Beautiful Things," an amazing theatrical piece based on Cheryl Strayed’s (Wild) journey as the beloved anonymous advice columnist for “Dear Sugar,”—currently on the MainStage at PCS—Riordan is in her 21st season at Portland Center Stage at The Armory, where she has previously directed Kodachrome, Every Brilliant Thing, Lauren Weedman Doesn’t Live Here Anymore among others. For PDXISH Riordan shares her thoughts on the show, Cheryl and other "tiny beautiful things."

PDXISH's latest guest is one of the Portland’s most beloved icons, The Unipiper! The flame-throwing, unicycling bagpiper, who is actually a cute, married, nerd named Brian Kidd, shared his newest initiative, Weird Portland United (WPU), ushering in a whole new chapter of Portland weirdness. Kidd also shared his unique collaboration with Portland Brewing, Unipiper Hazy IPA. Through its beer sales Portland Brewing. Unipiper Hazy IPA represents the first of Portland Brewing’s “Keep Portland Weird” year-round series of collaborations. The series features distinctly Portland collaborative brews with the aim of highlighting each collaborator’s contribution to keeping Portland weird. Since 2007 The Unipiper has been riding his unicycle around uniquely Portland attractions and festivals dressed as a variety of famous characters, from Darth Vader to Bigfoot, while playing a set of flame-throwing bagpipes. For this first beer in the series Portland Brewing will donate $5,000 to help kickstart Weird Portland United. WPU is a new nonprofit organization that will discover, support, and cultivate up-and-coming and long-standing purveyors of weird through official Weird Awards, an official register of Weird Historic Places, the Weird Portland Museum, tours of Weird Portland, a Weird Portland Festival, and more.

Brooke Jackson-Glidden is the newish Editor of Eater Portland. PDXISH had an opportunity to talk to this busy editor about the comings and goings of the Portland restaurant scene and the state of food media in America today. Hear what she has to say.

Zia McCabe plays keyboards, percussion and bass guitar for The Dandy Warhols. She is a real estate agent, an activist and a damn good DJ (she goes by DJ Rescue). When she is not doing all that she sings in a country music band called Brush Prairie She is a busy person. But she did take time out of her incredible schedule to spend some time with PDXISH. Claudine Hemingway orchestrates many of the cool events for McMenamins. She also loves Paris. In the last two years she has been there seven times. In fact, on her last trip to the City of Lights we were there at the same time! PDXISH: Burgerville is celebrating the fall season with a NEW Apple Spice Milkshake. PDXISH welcomes Lowell MacGregor of Taylor Made Retreat to the show. Taylor Made Retreat is an idyllic sanctuary from the hectic pace of today’s world, where residents can seek lasting recovery through personal spiritual awakening. The Taylor Made Retreat is housed in the former home of Phil Polsky, an infamous ex-boxer and bootlegger. The Tudor revival-style mansion, located on Southwest Walker Road in Portland, is known by locals as the Walker Road Castle. Taylor Made Retreat focuses on the spiritual and mental aspect of the recovery process. The program is created by a team of professionals from across the spectrum of mental health and treatment industry. Lowell shares his vision for Taylor Made Retreat and talks about its upcoming Open House on Sunday, September 16.

PDXISH welcomes author Courtenay Hameister to the show. An Erma Bombeck meets Elaine May for the #metoo generation, for most of her life (and even during her years as the host of Live Wire), Courtenay Hameister lived in a state of near-constant dread and anxiety. She fretted about everything. Until a couple years ago, when, in her mid-40s, she decided to fight back against her debilitating anxieties by spending a year doing little things that scared her – things that the average person might consider doing for a half second before deciding: "nope." Refreshing, relatable, and pee-your-pants funny, Okay Fine Whatever (Little, Brown) is Hameister's hold-nothing-back account of her adventures on the front lines of Mere Human Woman vs. Fear, reminding us that even the tiniest amount of bravery is still bravery.

Tidal Wave Productions (tidalwavecomics.com) is led by the AMAZING Darren G. Davis. A recent Willamette Week Best of Portland winner ("best biographical comics" for his nonfiction comics on everyone from Michelle Obama to James Comey and Ellen DeGeneres ) Davis sat down with PDXISH to talk comics, celebrities (Olivia Newton John comes up more than once), being gay in Los Angeles and Portland and all sorts of other stuff. He's a fascinating man. Please take a listen.

Rommelmann's work appears in the LA Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, Reason, and other publications. PDXISH had a chance to talk to Nancy about her new book "To The Bridge: A story of Motherhood and Murder." On May 23, 2009, Amanda Stott-Smith drove to the middle of the Sellwood Bridge in Portland, Oregon, and dropped her two children into the Willamette River. Forty minutes later, rescuers found the body of four-year-old Eldon. Miraculously, his seven-year-old sister, Trinity, was saved. As the public cried out for blood, Amanda was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to thirty-five years in prison. Embarking on a seven-year quest for the truth, Rommelmann traced the roots of Amanda's fury and desperation through thousands of pages of records, withheld documents, meetings with lawyers and convicts, and interviews with friends and family who felt shocked, confused, and emotionally swindled by a woman whose entire life was now defined by an unspeakable crime. At the heart of that crime: a tempestuous marriage, a family on the fast track to self-destruction, and a myriad of secrets and lies as dark and turbulent as the Willamette River.

Steven Lien, the founder of UnderU4Men is a 4th generation Oregonian, who grew up working in the ski industry. Later, a unique opportunity took him into technology career with a Swedish company. After years of world travel and a desire to return to his love of retail, Steven worked to bring to the U.S. what European’s have loved for generations; quality men’s fashion underwear. Founded in 2006 underU4men has grown to become the leading independent retailer in the industry. Steven not only operates the most unique underwear store in the United States he's also a leader, both professionally and personally and is involved with both the retail and LGBT community.
