Pinhole Podcast – Episode 9: Winter

Season’s greetings from the Pinhole Podcast team! For Episode 9, we got together to talk about shooting pinhole in the winter. The darker days and chilly temperatures are definitely challenging, as Shelly learned the hard way on a recent trip, but we offer useful tips and suggestions to encourage you (and her) to keep shooting. In the second half of our episode we discuss our recent Pinhole Contest. We were totally blown away at the technique and creativity of the work that was submitted! We chatted about our decision-making process (it was NOT easy) before finally announcing our contest winner. Telling you in the notes? No way, that’s too easy – you’ll have to listen to find out! Any questions or suggestions for shooting in winter, or just want to connect with your Pinhole Podcast hosts? Be sure to like our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter! *Photo by Shelly, as discussed in this episode. Pinhole Podcast – Episode 8: Gifts

With the holidays approaching, Herschel, Alex and Jana got together to discuss useful gifts for the pinhole photographer and offer a few personal revelations for the season. It all begins with a discussion of gifts we’d like to receive this year. Jana hopes for the perfect, travel-friendly tripod, Herschel makes a wish for a Zero Image 4×5 camera and Alex welcomes any listeners to send the Supersense 66/6 Pinhole Instant Camera his way. The conversation then turns to gifts for those new to pinhole photography which of course generates some lively banter and useful suggestions. While Alex and Jana consider 35mm pinhole cameras like the Viddy or ONDU 35mm a good start, Herschel does one better and offers the gift of building a custom pinhole camera and developing the first prints. Our thoughtful discussion continues on to topics such as the revival of film, converting Polaroid CB-70 (or CB-72) into instant pinhole cameras, eBay sob stories and Herschel’s use of The Force to meter exposures. Do you have gift suggestions, an eBay sob story of your own or feedback from this podcast? Be sure to connect with us on Facebook and Twitter. Quick reminder: Submit your entry to our Pinhole Contest! We are impressed by the entries we’ve received so far and cannot wait to see your work as well. Send your best pinhole image to jana@pdexposures.com with subject line ‘Pinhole Podcast Contest Entry’ with your name and website link for a chance to win a ONDU 6×6 pinhole camera, film and other goodies. Entries are due by Sunday, November 30 and the winner will be announced in our December episode. One entry per person. Happy Holidays from your Pinhole Podcast team! Pinhole Intermission: A Chat with Amanda

This episode brings together all of the women of Pdexposures.com (Jana, Shelly, and Amanda) in one grand intermission, where we discuss…well, we discussed a LOT of things. This episode definitely has a more lo-fi flow – the audio might not be up to our normal standard, but we didn’t want to prevent your enjoying our chat with Amanda! We start off talking about the pinhole cameras in our arsenals, from favorites to meh, from the homemade to the hotly (sort of) debated Holga WPC. Discussion veered into the cameras we want, and the cameras we wish we wanted. Next, we talked about Kelly Angood’s new Kickstarter project, the Viddy: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kellyangood/viddy-the-worlds-cutest-diy-pinhole-camera-kit. It really MIGHT be the cutest DIY pinhole camera in the world, check it out! We also spend a fair bit of time commiserating on our limitations when it comes to building our own cameras. Sigh. Hold on tight – the chat speeds up after that! We talked about changes at Urban Outfitters and the cameras they carry, the Impossible Instant Lab, Impossible film, Impossible in general, Polaroid cameras, pink star awards, and bags bags BAGS. Jana and Shelly are big fans of the Kelly Moore line of bags; we discussed those at length, as well as every other bag pretty much ever made, ever. Got questions or comments for us? Don’t hesitate to get in touch via Facebook or Twitter, @PinholePodcast! The Pinhole Podcast – Episode 5: Pinhole Heroes

It’s Episode 5 of the Pinhole Podcast! We took a break from talking about ourselves (and notebooks and cable releases and stuff) and had a chat about some of our pinhole heroes. What is a pinhole hero, you ask? We had lots of opinions (surprise), but pretty much agreed that a hero is someone who inspires us. They really know how to use their cameras and are always learning new ways to see with them. Some construct their own cameras out of the most amazing materials, or hack a wide variety of other cameras to shoot pinhole. In short, they embody everything that is good and awesome about pinhole. Please check out the links below to see our hero’s work, as well as the images that we discuss through the podcast! The Pinhole Podcast – Episode 4: Answering Your Questions

Episode 4 of the Pinhole Podcast is all about your questions! Join us as Alex, Jana, Shelly and Jeff delve into answering numerous user-submitted questions gleaned from our various social media outlets across the web. Along the way we discuss exposure times, light meters (incident and reflective), angle of view, pinhole aperture, and filters. But don’t worry, it’s not all work, there’s plenty of ribbing and sarcasm for everyone. Special thanks to listeners who submitted questions for the show. Since we didn’t get to answer all the questions we received, we think this might become a recurring part of future episodes. With that in mind, don’t hesitate to send us your questions via Facebook, and Twitter, @PinholePodcast. The Pinhole Podcast Intermission: WPPD in Amsterdam

The Pinhole Podcast is back with yet another intermission episode. I know what you’re thinking, two months in a row of intermissions? I know right?! Thing is, we keep pushing back our regularly scheduled shows for good reasons. This time, our favorite Brit, Alex Yates, is back to jet setting across Europe for pinhole-related events. First it was Berlin and now Amsterdam, where he met up with numerous other pinholistas for last month’s Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. While there he took the time to do some man-on-the street interviews with Jesus Joglar, Monica Smith, and Todd Schlemmer. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the smooth British tones of Alex’s voice as he discusses all things pinhole while the pitter patter of rain falls in the Dutch capital. Don’t forget to connect with us and share your thoughts and feelings at our Facebook and Twitter pages. Pinhole Day Intermission

In anticipation of Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day some of the Pdexposures family gathered to record the first official Pinhole Podcast intermission. We were especially thrilled to have Simon participate in the discussion and bring his special dynamic to the recording. Herschel started things off by introducing his Next Best Thing Project, a year-long endeavor to connect pinhole photographers across the globe by sharing images on a quarterly basis. He is actively looking for participants so if you’re interested or know of photographers who would be, please direct them to Herschel’s page! Jana introduced Zeb Andrew’s Pinholes for Syria crowdfunding campaign. Zeb will be joining a volunteer team of artists, athletes and dentists this June by bringing joy and creativity to Syrian refugee children in Turkey. Follow this link to learn more about the Zeitouna Project and follow Zeb’s adventures at his Facebook event page here. We shared our individual plans for WPPD and also learned that Simon is actually 20 rolls into a pinhole project of his very own…but you’ll have to listen to learn more about it. Now it’s your turn. We want to hear from you, our valued listeners. Where will be you be this WPPD? Connect with the Pinhole Podcast team and share pictures of your cameras in action to our Facebook page! We’ll be watching and sharing your photos. Happy WPPD and thanks for listening! The Pinhole Podcast Episode 3 – Obscura Book in Berlin

We’ve got a special episode of the Pinhole Podcast for you! Episode 3 takes us all the way to Berlin for the Obscura Book show. Herschel, Alex, and Jeff all have photography featured in the book, and we are quite proud of our guys. From their website, www.obscura-book.com: “‘OBSCURA – 121 Views’ is a community project. The book reflects the diverse spectrum of modern pinhole photography.” To celebrate the launch of the book, Obscura had a gallery show in Berlin, and Alex was in attendance! The next day, he had a chance to take a photowalk with some of the show attendees and talk to them about their work, why and how they shoot pinhole, and a variety of other topics. It’s always a great opportunity to get to pick another photographer’s brain, if you will, when it comes to their processes. To get to hear from five of them (six including Alex) was a rare treat! Great tips are plentiful in this episode, and we are grateful to the following photographers for sharing their time and talents with us: James Cathcart: http://flic.kr/ps/9XJHq (Openworkstudio) Markus Kaesler: http://www.markuskaesler.de Jozef Pajersky: http://pajersky.com Lucas Kastelijn: http://flic.kr/ps/87hG1 Larissa Honsek: http://novemberkind-fotografie.tumblr.com Don’t forget Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, coming up on April 27th! The Pinhole Podcast Episode 2 – Paper, Film and Digital

Episode 2 of the Pinhole Podcast has landed! This month’s topic covers the materials used in pinhole photography; we talk briefly about paper, say a LOT about film, and share our warm, fuzzy thoughts on digital pinholes. Before delving into materials, Jana talks about the upcoming Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day: Sunday April 27. This great event celebrates lensless photography, and you can find a list of global events at this link. Two involve members of our very own podcast team: 1. Alex is co-hosting a photo walk on WPPD in Amsterdam. He invites you to join in on the fun. Being the git that he is, Alex attempts to downplay expectations. Hogwash, it’s gonna be a blast. 2. Stateside, Seattle’s Glazer’s Camera is holding its 2nd annual Pinhole Photo Contest, which our Jana is co-judging. This year’s themes are People and Places. Submissions are due by Friday April 11, 2014. We mentioned the music video for London Grammar’s “Wasting My Young Years”, shot using a homemade pinhole bullet-cam film rig. You will hear us mention it from time to time…it’s a beautiful video by most standards and EPIC by pinhole standards. The behind-the-scenes making of video is fascinating to watch, too. Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t address Shelly’s near-death experience during the show. Thankfully she survived and is on the path to a full recovery. We urge you to send positive thoughts her way during this trying time. That sums it up for the show! Thanks for listening, and as always we’d love to hear from y’all. Send your comments and questions to us via Twitter at @pinholepodcast, or our Facebook page Pinhole Podcast. Featured image by Pinhole Podcast host Shelly Sometimes. The Pinhole Podcast Episode 1 – Introductions

Welcome to the newest show in the Pdexposures network, the Pinhole Podcast! The big show about small holes. When we say big show, we aren’t lying – there are five of us co-hosting. Individually we are Alex, Herschel, Shelly, Jana and Jeff. Join us once a month as we discuss all things pinhole photography. To kick off our inaugural episode we briefly introduce ourselves, give our background in pinhole photography, and perhaps more importantly declare our stance on notebooks. We’re not shy about our opinions of notebooks, for or against, and we’re certainly not afraid to voice said opinions during the podcast. If you have a strong opinion either way, voice it. We’d love to hear about it. Beyond introductions we spent much of the episode giving a brief overview of what pinhole photography is, and the various cameras available to purchase. Along the way you’ll hear us mention several pinhole camera makers and models including the Diana F+, Holga WPC, ONDU, and Zero Image. There are of course a few tangents – what would a podcast be without them? You’ll be treated to a well-timed yet dated ‘that’s what she said’ reference, a few mentions of Pinhole Podcast being a Leica-free zone, and of course a totally random mention of 1960s porn. Trust me, it all makes sense after you listen…we hope. We’d love to hear from ya’ll, whether you’re a seasoned pinhole photographer or new to the whole idea of lensless photography. You can send your comments, questions, and personal stance on notebooks to us via @PinholePodcast on Twitter , or The Pinhole Podcast page on Facebook. Thanks for sharing your first pinhole photo (above) for our debut Herschel! The post The Pinhole Podcast Episode 1 – Introductions appeared first on Pdexposures.
