A new movie about podcasts, Age of Audio, was premiered recently at the Oak Cliff Film Festival. Initially announced in Dec 2019 and directed by Shaun Michael Colón, it follows Ronald Young Jr in his quest for a hit indie podcast; and interviews people like Adam Curry, Ira Glass, Kara Swisher and Marc Maron. The future of the Australian Podcast Ranker is secure, with an extended agreement between CRA and Triton Digital, it’s been announced. In June’s Podcast Ranker, the ABC’s Mushroom Case Daily was the third most listened-to show. The Nine Podcast Network saw 3% year-on-year increases for downloads and audience. ARN’s iHeart has 23.5mn downloads, according to the ranker (which measures participating publishers only, and notably no shows from Acast).

Podcast Movement announced the first set of confirmed sessions for the event in Dallas next month. And - Podnews can add news of one more speaker: none other than the “podfather”, Adam Curry, who is returning to Podcast Movement thanks to SoundStack. The co-inventor of podcasting, the Podcast Index and Podcasting 2.0 will be on the company’s stage on August 19th.

Podcast Movement announced the winners of the PM25 Scholarship Class, with nearly fifty up-and-coming podcasters who are attending with complimentary passes.
TIME released its TIME100 Creators list for 2025 - and nearly 50% of the honorees host podcasts, a PR company acting for Spotify tell us, which is apparently evidence of “Spotify's place at the center of podcasting” (though many of the shows aren’t actually theirs). The list includes Mel Robbins, Alex Cooper, Steven Bartlett, Joe Rogan, and “Hawk Tuah” girl Haliey Welch.

Buzzsprout Magic Mastering adds more magic

Buzzsprout has, ah, added some sort of new tools to, er, its Magic Mastering tool. The tool now has “filler killer”, a tool that “cautiously detects and removes filler words”, and “power clean”, a tool you can manually turn on when required that can remove complex noises like chatter, wind, traffic, or reverb.
We gave it a copy of the Podnews Weekly Review, which Buzzsprout sponsor, and turned on “filler killer”. It turns out that it shaved more than three minutes thirty seconds of “ums” and “ahs” from our original hour-long show; and the ums it removed weren’t audible. (There’s are a few examples in our daily podcast today). We’ll, um, you know, turn it on, then, tomorrow.
Podscribe released its industry rankings for July 2025. Crime Junkie is still the #1 podcast, it says, with 8.1 million listeners; Toyota is the new #2 podcast advertiser, behind BetterHelp.
Higher Ed PodCon, a higher education podcasters’ conference this weekend in Chicago IL, USA, has more than 150 registrations, representing over a hundred universities. “It's shaping up to be an inspiring day of conversation and connection that reflects just how much momentum there is around podcasting in higher education,” we’re told.

NPR has recently added support for the funding tag across its shows - it’s a Podcasting 2.0 feature in RSS that enables a link to help directly support a show. Supporting Cast notes in a blog today that use of the feature continues to grow, now it’s supported by apps like Pocket Casts, Podcast Addict and AntennaPod.

In Canada, The Podcast Exchange (TPX) is to file for bankruptcy. “Since 2018, The Podcast Exchange (TPX) has been a pioneer in building the podcast advertising market in Canada. We’ve worked hard over the years to support advertisers and publishing partners and deliver real value. Despite those efforts, the business has faced sustained financial challenges for some time.” said the CEO Pary Bell in an email.
Podtrac released its June Podcast Rankers. Unique monthly audience was down, month-on-month, for every publisher. It lists participating publishers only.

Spotify ensures podlink’s future

In a welcome move, Spotify has returned podcast linking tool pod.link to its original developer, Nathan Gathright. Podlink, which offers one simple link to a podcast on all platforms, launched in Aug 2018, and was purchased by Podsights in Feb 2021, which in turn was acquired by Spotify in Feb 2022. Gathright left Spotify in 2023. The move will make sure that over 1.7 million links to Podlink on the web will keep working.
Spotify tells us: “Spotify is committed to building great products that help creators succeed. As we continue investing in native solutions that help creators and publishers track and promote their podcast episodes more effectively, we’ve decided to return Pod.link to its founder. We're collaborating closely to ensure a smooth handoff, with minimal impact to users throughout the transition”.

True Native Media has announced two ways for podcast publishers to earn money. PodRamp is for emerging podcasts, helping smaller shows with programmatic ad management and hosting; PodPremium, the company’s established offering, is for larger shows, with strategic representation and premium host-read ad campaigns.
In the UK, AudioUK has launched a campaign for formal recognition of podcasting and audio as a core UK creative industry. It follows similar action in Canada and France. Recognition could mean tax relief and a place in policy-making committees. The release includes action that UK-based audio companies or individuals can take.

The total number of new podcast episodes published in June was 4.7% fewer than in May on a normalised basis, says Livewire. Spotify for Creators saw a small decrease, but still retained its leading market share of 26.6% of new episodes. Spreaker (at 15%) and Buzzsprout (at 8.7%) saw increases in share, as did Podbean and Libsyn. Amazon Cloudfront still serves the majority of podcast episodes (now 60.79% of them).
Buzzsprout’s monthly stats report for June suggests a small narrowing of Apple Podcasts’s lead in terms of total downloads. The podcast host saw a -4.5% drop in total downloads (June has -3.3% fewer days than May).
Transistor showed Apple Podcasts retake its lead, however.
The Podcast Standards Project has added Anytime Player as a certified app, and podcast hosting providers Iono, Podhome, Podtoo and Alitu as certified hosting providers. The full list and certification criteria is on Github, and on the project website; the group aims to advocate for new features that improve the open podcasting ecosystem for both listeners and creators.

A comedy podcast festival is to expand into the US - and to return to London and Melbourne. Cheerful Earful plans 15 days of live podcast shows across the globe, including a new event in New York City. Presented in partnership with headline sponsor Adelicious, the festival continues its mission to be “global but grassroots,” with comedy at the heart. Tickets are now on sale.
New York Public Radio, the owners of WNYC, released its financial returns for FY23/24. The company brought in $73.9mn (including a government grant of just $347,000), but had expenses of $83.1mn. During the year the company eliminated leadership bonuses, cut its workforce by 40 people, and cancelled Death, Sex & Money, with production ceasing in January 2024. It’s now with Slate.
Oliver Lafontaine, the CEO of the company, was paid $612,000. We also learn the packages paid to Brooke Gladstone (who hosts On The Media), and Anna Sale (who hosted Death, Sex & Money for six months of this return period): both were paid around $341,000.
Podcast advertising via AdsWizz earned WNYC $426,000 during the year.
Parla has launched its deep research assistant. The research tool is trained on “every active podcast in the world”. We asked it “should a podcast be in video, or just in audio”, and it gave us this.

Advertisers say they’ve never been more interested in podcast advertising - and never used it more. That’s the results of the eleventh year of the Advertiser Perceptions study by Westwood One and Cumulus Media. However, the study suggests, brands are just “sticking their toe in the water” in terms of budgets; and suggests that it’s time that brands invested 5% of their overall spend in podcasting.

France’s podcast industry has called for official government recognition for podcasting. “If we want podcasting to remain a diverse, creator-driven medium, it must be recognized as a cultural industry in its own right”, the organisation said, in a statement following its AGM. This follows AudioUK asking for the same in the UK; and podcasters asking for similar recognition in Canada.

Audacy is to shut down Pineapple Street Studios. Nearly thirty employees are to be laid off. Pineapple Street had been bought by Audacy in 2019 for $18mn. Audacy will continue making some shows. Audacy itself emerged from bankruptcy in January; it was reportedly looking for a buyer for the company in March.
Audacy shut Cadence13 (a $50mn purchase) in Mar 2024, and rebranded Podcorn ($22.5mn) as Audacy Creator Lab in April this year. Meanwhile, Audacy’s purchase of Moonbeam, a podcast discovery app in Jul 2022, also appears to have come to nothing: the website is now owned by a company in Ukraine. An Audacy spokesperson didn’t return our request for more detail about Moonbeam.
Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of podcasts being available in iTunes, Apple Podcasts released a list of “20 Years, 20 Podcasts We Love”, and posted a thank you to creators. “Podcasting has become a global force thanks to the creativity and commitment of creators, and the deep connections they have with their audiences. The twenty podcasts that we selected for the 20 Years, 20 Podcasts We Love list are a representation of this same creativity and connection found across the millions of podcasts on Apple Podcasts. We look forward to continuing to help creators grow their audiences, and listeners find and enjoy the podcasts they love,” Ben Cave, global head of podcasts at Apple, told Podnews.
Apple says these shows “have made a lasting impact on listeners and the podcast industry”; separately, the Essential Listening Poll is compiling a list from audio creators, writers and scholars, which will be unveiled in August at Podcast Movement.
Steve Jobs demoed podcasting at the D3 conference in 2005, by playing the latest episode of Adam Curry’s Daily Source Code. It didn’t, quite, go to plan.
Podnews restored the co-inventor of podcasting Dave Winer’s Morning Coffee Notes, which he credits for democratising the podcast medium (fearing that other early shows sounded too polished). The first episode in our restored feed is from March 2005.
As an aside: Apple’s list is hosted on the learn.applepodcasts.apple domain. That’s the first time we’ve seen them use this domain; there’s no homepage there yet.
PodcastOne has launched a crypto podcast network. The press release talks about blockchain, Web3 audio and video content, and AI-hosted content.

Spotify is wooing some potential video creators with promises of free ad money. Natalie Jarvey of The Ankler published a leaked Spotify deck; and one slide shows an incentive of $5,000 of free ad credits within Spotify Ads Manager to help eligible new video creators to promote their shows. Spotify often highlights that many creators see a growth in consumption after adding video: but it hasn’t mentioned that it gives $5,000 of free ads to drive that consumption increase.
Today, June 26, marks the thirteenth anniversary of the launch of the Apple Podcasts iOS app in 2012. The app featured a faux reel-to-reel tape deck, apparently a nod to the Braun TG 60 tape recorder by Dieter Rams. In the Apple Podcasts app, speed controls were marked with a tortoise and a hare; and promotion for This American Life on the editorially-curated “featured” section. The app also featured a “Top Stations” discovery feature. 86% of Gen Z listen to music or consume podcasts to help boost their mood, according to a new study. The Gen Z Report, from Edison Research and SiriusXM Media, says that 13-24 year-olds are most concerned with the economy, social injustice and political division. 8% of their audio time is spent with podcasts; they discover podcasts most-often by “searching on YouTube”.

The Podcast Marketing Academy released its 2025 Podcast Marketing Trends Report. The survey contains a lot of quality data around what works - and doesn’t - in terms of podcasting:
55% of shows saw a smaller listenership this year than last year, the study says; though 18% of shows doubled their listenership. It also shows that business shows, and shows with an interview format, grew the most. The length of a podcast grew slightly, with the median episode 5% longer than last year at 36 minutes 42 seconds.

Greg Glenday has been announced as the new CEO for Acast, after Ross Adams announced his resignation. Adams will continue as a strategic advisor; he’d been with Acast since 2014 (moving from Spotify and Capital Radio), and had been CEO for eight years.
Glenday joined in Aug 2023 as part of a raft of US appointments. He’d joined from Shazam, iHeartMedia, Lightbox and Undertone. You can read an interview shortly after he joined Acast, in our sister publication the Podcast Business Journal.
Spotify’s video podcast program isn’t a big hit with podcast networks, says Digiday, saying larger networks are “wary”. However, creators seem keener, with YMH Studios suggesting they’re earning 5x the revenue from Spotify than YouTube, and Ryth earning more than double.
Meanwhile, The Times of London reveals (in a paid-for article) that Spotify “has a porn problem”, after stumbling upon “everything from lascivious critiques of skin flicks to audio erotica and reels of ASMR sounds”.
And, Daniel Ek’s sales of Spotify shares? He’s used that money to invest in Helsing, an AI-driven military drone company. “I’m sure people will criticize it and that’s OK,” Ek told The Financial Times in a paid piece. Among other clients, the company is making drones for Ukraine.
Almost one in five of us eat to our favourite podcast or music, according to data from YouGov. 18% listen to music or podcasts while eating lunch; 16% over dinner. Half of us eat lunch alone.

The yearly environmental effect of Spotify integrating video into its music platform could mean an increase in carbon emissions equivalent to an extra 374,000 flights between Paris and New York, according to a new study. Video is significantly more energy-intensive, says carbon management company Greenly, because screens need to be on and lit, and video uses increased data and processor power.
The study notes that adding video to an audio-only platform means over 50x more carbon emissions every hour. The study only measures Spotify’s music platform, and not podcasting: but video podcasting on Spotify, and on YouTube, will mean additional energy use.
Pocket Casts has added transcripts to its web player. “Some podcasts include their own transcripts which are available to all users. And if they don’t, as a Plus or Patron subscriber, you have access to auto-generated transcripts!” Here is an example from our daily update, showing named voices.
The third biggest news podcast in the UK, Politics Joe has put its video podcast behind a Patreon paywall. The audio version will remain free for all. The company claims to have attracted 350 paying subscribers in just five days, each paying £8 (US$10.50) per month for access.
