Eric Partaker: Achieving Peak Productivity Performance
Episode in
POWER to Live More with Jo Dodds
Eric Partaker is a Peak Performance Coach helping CEOs and founders in the tech industry to fulfill their productivity and leadership potential.
Eric began his career as a consultant with McKinsey & Company and went on to help build Skype before selling it to eBay in 2005. After the success of Skype, Eric wanted to get back to doing something that would fulfill him personally and decided to combine his love of restaurants and Mexican culture to start a Mexican restaurant chain.
Although they seem varied, Eric’s career choices have always been influenced by his desire to be challenged and inspired. His current endeavour as a Peak Performance Expert has allowed him to share his unique set of skills and knowledge with others in the business world and to continue pursuing his own version of his best self.
Eric was named “CEO of the Year” at the 2019 Business Awards and one of the “Top 30 Entrepreneurs in the UK” by Startups Magazine. His book, The 3 Alarms: A Simple System to Transform Your Health, Wealth, and Relationships Forever, was released in 2020.
In today’s episode, Eric and I discuss his unusual path to coaching and why he believes that the road to success is different for everyone. He shares what inspired him to begin his own journey to “peak performance” and why he constantly strives to be among the best in whatever he does.
He provides insight into the 80/20 rule for productivity and how it has helped him simplify his to-do list. Eric also shares the three most important things to implement into your routine for better productivity and how he has used them to achieve a life of significance and success.
“Peak performance is simply operating at your highest level in the areas of life that matters most.”
Eric Partaker

Janine Ogg: Asana, Digital Learning, Templates, Outdoor Pursuits and Sub 20 Hour Businesses
Episode in
POWER to Live More with Jo Dodds
Asana, Digital Learning, Templates, Outdoor Pursuits and Sub 20 Hour a Week Businesses with Janine Ogg, Co-Founder of Get It Done Mum.
What We Recommended:
Tools & Apps
“I’m a huge advocate of Asana. With our latest project, which is launching our own podcast, we’ve got all the templates in place now, and it makes it a lot more efficient.”
Unroll.Me – to make unsubscribing from newsletters quick and easy
SaneBox – I recommend this for managing and triaging your email
Canned Responses in Gmail, which is a template tool. “I’ve got a bunch of templates saved in there now, and that saves me hours of time composing e-mails.”
“We use Google Hangouts a lot too.”
Shortkeys – Jo uses this on her PC to create templates that ‘magically’ appear when a short code is typed in.
“We’re both using Headspace. Jo and I have both signed up for that in the last couple of months, and we put that on the business because we decided the mindset of being in a good head space is really essential to living a healthy and successful life as an entrepreneur”
Jo did a search for gamification and to-do lists to find something to suit Little Doddsy and what came up is called Habitica
Other Resources
“What sort of learning am I doing now?” and I realised just how much more I’m doing my learning via podcast or online, like even sometimes via things that come through Facebook, or Sam and I listen to a lot of TED Talks. We’re doing a lot of our learning via new online technologies now. It’s quite interesting just to reflect on that.”
Books
Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn, which is a meditation book about mindfulness meditation.
Succulent Wild Woman by Sark. “She’s an artist who has pretty much built a business empire, become a very savvy businesswoman. She just writes these books that … They’re funny, they’re creative and artistic. They’ve got lots of drawings in them. They’re all about living life succulently, dancing with your wonderful self.”
The Four-Fold Way. “This is a leadership book. It’s Walking the Path of the Warrior, Teacher, Healer, and Visionary, and it’s by Angeles Arrien. She’s an anthropologist. This was the textbook that my life coach gave me when I was in my mid-20s, maybe, and I did a life coaching programme.”
The Omnivore’s Dilemma, which is about food “because I was a vegetarian for about twelve years, and this is one of the books that I ended up moving back to eating meat again”.
Radical Simplicity, “which is all about basically a “less is more” approach to living your life. That’s really influenced where we’ve taken the business, really, if I think about it, because it’s all about how the choices that you make in terms of what you spend and how you set your life up influence how much you need to work and what we can do to set ourselves up so that we are having a smaller footprint on the earth as well as being able to do more of what we love doing and not be focused on having to work, work, work, work to pay the bills or pay the mortgage or whatever it is that’s putting that pressure on us.
Tips
“I guess the key one here for us, and what we’re teaching about a lot is around strategy, because we believe that no matter how many to-do lists you have or how many amazing technological tools you’re using, if you don’t have your strategy right, it doesn’t matter. You’re still not going to achieve what you’re setting out to achieve if you don’t have the right strategy in place. We consistently see people spending a lot of time on things that aren’t actually contributing to what it is they want to achieve in their business.”
“What we do to be really productive and really focused is we have two really clear milestones that we have for our business. Usually one’s around an income generation milestone and one’s, for us, an audience building milestone.”
“We have what we call a parking lot, which is where we put things where we’re like, “Should we really be working on this right now?” You know those bright, shiny objects that come up and you’re like, “This looks really cool, but should we actually be doing it right now?” We’re constantly asking ourselves that question. If it’s a “no,” if it doesn’t fit with what our current targets are, then we put it in the parking lot and come back to it later.”
“I work three hours a week on my passion project as well, which is a river project. That keeps us busy outside of work.”
“I guess as I get older I’m getting better at being more aware and noticing my signs for when I’m getting out of balance, when I’m over-tired, when I need to take some time for myself. I definitely still don’t get it right all the time, but I’m getting there. That’s probably one of my biggest learnings, is just how important it is to give yourself that time when you need it to be able to recognise those signs and also just keep perspective about what’s important and what’s not.”
Podcasts
“I’ve been going through a phase of trying to get out for an evening walk a couple of times a week too, and I tend to listen to podcasts then. Sometimes I’ll listen to business-related stuff, especially because we’re launching our own podcast at the moment, but often I’ll just listen to stuff that I’m interested in as well. There’s just so much there to discover. It’s incredible.”
Websites
“What I do is I’m a member of an online gym called foreverfit.tv, which is run by a Kiwi woman called Nicola Smith. I’ve interviewed her a couple of times, actually. I love her business model and I love what she’s doing. She’s a personal trainer who took her business online, and she’s got this incredible online gym. It’s packed full of quick and easy workouts that are really effective.”

“We’re also launching a podcast in the next few weeks, so if you’d like to listen to some of the stuff we’re chatting about on the podcast we’d love to have you visit. The focus of that is around building your business in twenty hours a week or less.”

Mark Huggins: Personal Development, Mindfulness, Meditation, Mind Mapping, Productivity and Walking
Episode in
POWER to Live More with Jo Dodds
Personal Development, Mindfulness, Meditation, Mind Mapping, Productivity and Walking with Mark Huggins, MD and Owner of Corporate Drama
Listen Below and Here’s What We Recommended:
Business and Marketing
Marketing – CRM and Email Tools
Infusionsoft – “I started with that about a year ago when we decided to really shift our marketing for Corporate Drama up a gear. I really like it, I find it really dynamic. We’re only using a small part of it, ultimately we’ll come on to use other sections of it. It’s a platform that can grow with your business as your business grows. That comes highly recommended.”
Social Media
Hootsuite – “I use Hootsuite a lot. We broadcast out across LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook on a regular basis. I really like Hootsuite and I tend to use that … That would be one of my 90 minutes, sitting down scheduling Hootsuite for the next 2 or 3 or 4 weeks.”
Learning – Books – Entrepreneurial
“A book that I’ve read recently which I have recommended to so many people now – I really should be on commission but sadly I’m not – is a book called ‘Turn The Ship Around’ by David L. Marquet. An absolutely fascinating book. I highly, highly recommend it. I’ve recommended it to lots of people that I have been working with over the last 3 or 4 months.”
Productivity
“I have in front of me a large yellow pad which, which has 5 columns down it, vertical columns and each of those columns are a day of the week. Normally on a Saturday morning, when I’m just wrapping things up before I start to enjoy my weekend, I allow myself an hour on Saturday morning and I plan what I’m going to do on each of my 90 minutes across the week for the following week.”
“I’m also a big mind mapper. The tool that I use is a mind mapping tool called Simple Mind. They do a free version which is very, very good or you can upgrade to the all singing all dancing version. I will often then transfer what I’ve started in sort of embryonic form in the notepad. I’ll then work that up into a full blown mind map on the Simple Mind and then of course you can print that out if you need to. A lot of my project work starts that way.”
Personal Development
Books
‘Build Your Business In 90 Minutes a Day’ by Nigel Botterill and Martin Gladdish. The central message of the book is that if you set a period of time, Nigel recommends 90 minutes but you can have any set period of time, first thing in the morning and you absolutely minimise every single distraction that you can possibly have to enable you to focus for those 90 minutes. When I read this, I mean it’s such basic common sense, when I read it and then decided to implement it, the change was really transformational.
Wellbeing
Sleep
Minimising Jetlag – “In terms of jetlag, the thing that I have learnt over the last few years, really be choosy about your flights. I mean, working out, if you can, when you land in the new country I always try and make it some time in the afternoon local time because then I’ve only got a few hours before local time it will be bedtime. I find that can very, very quickly get on to, successfully get on to local time.”
Sleep and Water – “Make sure you get plenty of sleep, make sure you drink plenty of water and you eat healthy and magically that way you seem to be able to get through the week. If you stop doing those things and starting to burn the candle at both ends, then don’t be surprised when by Thursday you’re feeling completely, you’re completely shuttered.”
Exercise
Walking – “I’m pretty lucky that I live in South Buckinghamshire, in a little village, and we’re surrounded by open countryside and woods and some beautiful bridleways and walks around here. Walking is very high on my priority of activities.
Meditation and Mindfulness
“I practice mindfulness and we factor mindfulness into a number of our programmes, our leadership programmes in particular, and I have a really good mindfulness app on my iPhone which are a series of guided meditations of varying lengths and you can just get in when you’re on a train and you’re thinking, “Oh I just I need to do a little bit of meditation”. You can stick your headphones in and hit the button and it comes up with a lovely guided meditation for 5, 10, 15, I think some are even 30 minutes in duration. I think it’s just called Mindfulness.
When stuff goes wrong – “Okay, it didn’t go according to plan. There will be learning that you can take from this and as long as you apply that then there is likelihood that you’ll get some benefit from it. The alternative is just to beat yourself up and get thoroughly miserable. That’s not really worth it at the end of the day. It’s something that mindfulness has taught me as well – is the power of letting go of things that bother you and worry you. That would be my top tip for bad days. Reflection and then thinking what could have been better and a bit of mindfulness to prevent a sleepless night.”
Random
Films & TV
“I was very keen to see recently the Steve Jobs movie which I found absolutely fascinating.”
“The movie about the financial crush with Steve Carell and … Is it called Big Short? The Big Short I think it’s called. It’s about the guys who try and bet against the US housing market. If you haven’t seen it, it’s an amazing film. At times funny and other times absolutely jaw dropping because you begin to realise how inappropriate, should we say, the whole financial structure was around mortgages in the US leading up to the 2008/2009 crash.
To Contact Mark
“Well the best thing to do, would be to head on to our website. Which is, https://www.corporatedrama.co.uk and there is a whole massive stuff on there that you can explore from appraisals to assertiveness and communication styles. There are videos on there you can watch.
There is that or I’m on LinkedIn as Mark Huggins. You’ll be able to find me. Please do, if anybody is listening to this, wants any more information ping me a message and I’ll be more than happy to reply.”

This Week’s App / Resource
Gett
If you are ever in London and looking for a taxi; look no further than this app.
When I worked in London I was always lamenting how I never seemed to be able to find a free black cab when I needed one. I used to play netball at Blackfriars, along from our office in Cannon Street and we were often late or out of breath from lots of running when we couldn’t find that elusive taxi!
With Gett it allows you to ‘summon’ a black cab and, once it’s set up, pay by card as part of the app. It has been so useful in the years that I’ve been using it.
The best example of how useful it is was when I was speaking at an event at Birmingham University with the man who headed up the London 2012 Gamesmakers and I impressed him by finding us a black cab when it was chucking it down with rain and no cabs were visible anywhere. As we were trying to think of our strategy I realised that gett works in Birmingam too so we then easily got a cab!
Use this code for £3 off your first ride!
Receipt Bank
I’ve just been sorting out my expenses for last month and was reminded how useful this app is. Receipt Bank is a tool that allows you to scan receipts on your phone or email invoices into it and it then converts them into accounting records and sends them to one of a number of accounts systems (I use Kashflow).
It’s really helped me to get on top of my accounts and expenses and stops me having a pile of random bits of paper my desk that get in the way, get me down…and get me behind on my accounts!
I scan receipts at the point of purchase and throw the receipt away. If I’m really organised and charging the expense back to a client I can add them into a field to allow me to run reports based on the client’s name, which makes invoicing so much quicker.
You can check it out here.

Mohammed ElKhamissy: The Power of Living with Intention
Episode in
POWER to Live More with Jo Dodds
In 2001, Mohammed Elkhamissy found himself a new graduate in the wake of 9/11 and unable to get a job. He had grown up playing soccer competitively and had initially thought he would go on to play professionally.
When that didn’t come to fruition and he found himself unemployable as a Middle Eastern American in a post-9/11 world, he began reaching out to connections. He wound up working for a construction company and discovered that he had an affinity for the business. He now lives in Qatar and runs one of the top construction companies in the region.
Though Mohammad had achieved a lot of material success, when he discovered that his young daughter had been diagnosed with cancer, everything he had prioritised to that point vanished. He found that it didn’t matter how great his car was or how successful he was. Through his study of Stoicism, he discovered that living positively is a choice and that when you live authentically, you can give back immensely.
In the wake of his daughter’s illness, Mohammad has taken his commitment to giving back to new levels. He is an angel investor and is setting up a female entrepreneurship fund that will debut next year.
Today Mohammad and I discuss the power of connections and how they can feed your personal journey.
He touches on the importance of prioritising what makes you happy and why choosing optimism can impact the world around you.
He shares his routines and tools for staying focused, how his life changed with his daughter’s illness, and why being “average” is an asset. We also discusses the importance of choosing to live with intention and how it can fuel success.
“Setbacks are always going to be there… but when they hit, it’s how you treat them. You don’t quit.”
Mohammed Elkhamissy

How to design your life to be free
The principles that Mohammed lives by that motivate and fuel his success

How seeing himself as average helped him break out of his preconceived notions about success

Laura McClellan: Productively Build A Life That Matters
Episode in
POWER to Live More with Jo Dodds
Laura McClellan is a lawyer, writer, productivity enthusiast, and tech geek who is passionate about encouraging women in their individual journeys as people, wives, mothers, and citizens.
Laura hosts The Productive Woman podcast, a weekly show about productivity for busy women that helps the listener find the tools and encouragement they need to manage their time, life, and stress so they can accomplish the things they care about and create a meaningful life.
Laura also facilitates mastermind groups and offers productivity coaching for women who are seeking support, encouragement, and accountability in identifying and pursuing their goals.
Laura joins me today to reveal how her interest in increasing productivity started at an early age, why she has always considered herself as a little bit of a ‘productivity nerd’ since she was very young, and how that interest developed into creating time management and organisation strategies as her life got busier.
She discusses the obligations on most women to do many things well and why it’s vital to learn ways to manage not just your time, but your energy and your attention so you can do the things that really matter to you.
Laura also shares the reason she started The Productive Woman podcast and why she loves being able to connect with women all over the world who all have a common goal.
“A lot of times we feel like whatever we’re doing, we’re not quite doing it right, and that everybody else has it figured out and we are the only ones that are struggling, but if we put our heads together, we can share ideas, and every one of us will have a better opportunity to make the kind of life we want.”

Hela Wozniak-Kay: Evernote, Purple Cow, Dream It Alive, Business Connectedness
Episode in
POWER to Live More with Jo Dodds
Evernote, Purple Cow, Dream It Alive, Business Connectedness with Hela Wozniak-Kay of Sister Snog
Listen Below and Here’s What We Recommended:
Tools & Apps
Evernote – “I’m a Virgo who loves lists. My essential tool of life which includes work, and play, and organising everything else, is Evernote. I’m not quite sure how I possibly existed before Evernote came on the scene. I’m a massive fan of Evernote. You’ve got to get into it, and buy into it. It’s kind of like a sort of effortless solution, and you can share what you’re doing with those that are also on Evernote. I think it’s like a killer app that is just gorgeous, and whatever you want, music, videos, photos. It’s kind of like a sort of seamless snapshot of stored ideas, and information.”
Note from Jo – I’m an Evernote Certified Consultant and use those skills to help my members in POWER to Live More CALM
Note from Jo – Steve Dotto has a series of videos about using Evernote.
Note from Jo – I’ve started using it to scan in stuff that I’ve previously kept, like orders of service at weddings or cards that people have sent me and things like that. I just scan them in and then chuck them away, so that I don’t have a load of old bits of paper in the house.
Dream It Alive – “It’s a place where you can create your own vision boards and dream boards. We all need to dream and we all need to have goals. It’s about writing them down, but you need to turn them into pictures so you can see them. It helps you visualise.”
Pocket – “The other one is Pocket, because yes, you’ll see something, and where do you put … if you just kind of store it in a place that gets lost, you won’t go back to it, but you can build up your Pocket to be those things that you can have a look at.”
Scoop-It – “I do also like, for those that don’t have time to blog, but have an area that’s their subject, whatever it might be, Scoop. It, so you can create your own sort of Scoop and write your own comments on X, Y or Z.”
Rebel Mouse – “This aggregates all your tweets and pins, and it has a snapshot of your social output. You can see what you’re doing, and you get a feeling for who you are and what you’re putting out there. If you don’t like what you see, change it.”
Alpabetizer – “The last one is called the Alphabetizer. If you have a list of things, twenty things, and you’ve got to put them in alphabetical order, then use the alphabetizer, because it’ll do it for you. Well, there you go. I know, that’s totally useless, but someone might need it one day!
Other Resources
Medium Daily Digest – “I really like Medium Daily Digest. Today’s Medium Daily Digest, it had these … It’s kind of eclectic things, because they always set me off. Today’s articles that I liked, one was, “Elevate Yourself with Side Projects,” which I think is a very good thing, because if you’re only doing one thing, and you’re consumed by it … I’ve always got at least six other plates spinning that I’m doing, so it’s not just Sister Snog, or family, or friends. I’ve always got other things that are on the go. I think it’s important, because otherwise, you just become one-dimensional. The other article, it was called, “Collecting Experiences.” How to stay productive even when interrupted, which I thought was very relevant to today. The other one, “Does a ‘Fake It ‘Til You Make It’ Attitude Towards Business Work? Yes.” If you want to be someone, even if you’re not it, behave as if you are, and you will become it.”
Books
One of my favourite books is Purple Cow by Seth Godin.
Music
Disco – “I’m just inspired by all disco music. That’s what I always have on in the background if I’m getting myself into a good frame of mind. That’s me personally, being a disco queen.”
Films
Overcoming Struggle – “I’m quite often inspired by films that have a certain amount of overcoming struggle, that people have got through something, they face something, because running your own business, being an entrepreneur, you do have to sometimes find something in yourself on the days where perhaps, everything isn’t quite rosy and peachy.”
Watching Films to Relax – “I also am definitely a Netflix addict. I might have it on in the background. I do like things that are series, Netflix original, House of Cards, Since Orphan Black, Once Upon A Time. I really like anything that’s got a story that continues. In fact, Once Upon a Time did inspire Once Upon a Dinner Time. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but it’s all about fairy tales. It’s just fantastic and seems to be going on forever.”
Tips
Business Connectedness – “you need to be connected in business, because everybody is connected to each other, and that’s how you’ll get the doors open. They feed me, I feed them, and then quite often we come up with something that is because of both of us. That is my work, so how brilliant is that?”
Planning – The beginning of the week, Monday, I see as a planning day, and a desk day where I generally will not go into London. Mondays are when I will catch up, will make phone calls, will send emails, will plan, maybe it’s just something I’ve got to write, who I’m going to see.”
Magical Connections – “It’s amazing what happens when two people sit down and just talk about whatever is going on in their business.”
Being Focused on the Important Stuff – “I’m never too busy, I’m always doing lots of things”
Cooking to Relax – “Cooking is something that I do.
Morning Gratitude Routine – “I do have a little bit of reflection before I switch the motor on. I’ve kind of got into morning gratitude, so I will, in Evernote, in my notebook that’s called “Gratitudes,” write something that I’m quite thankful for, on a daily basis. I think you can get caught up in other stuff. Seven is the kind of magic number at Sister Snog, so I always write seven gratitudes, nearly always, most days.”
Using a Personal Trainer – “Goodness, me. It’s brilliant. She really is brilliant. It is early days. I haven’t transformed yet. She’s really good because she looks at … It’s not about doing some crazy boot camp training thing, because I don’t wish to be tortured. She’s also helping me … What I love about her is we can train anywhere. I’m kind of helping her understand her business, as well. One of the things is, how to turn your home into a gym. I have exercises now to do on the steps, to do on a chair, even things to pick up around the house. That’s what we’re going to do, and we will do, in due course, some videos of “Turn Your House Into a Gym.” Now there’s no excuses for not doing 20 minutes, and then having a break and doing another 20 minutes.”
Swimming for Exercise – “I was swimming when I was in Greenwich, two or three times a week. An early morning swim, I always wanted to be the first in the pool. That was my kind of … I just want to be first in the pool. I never was, but I still have that. It makes you sort of get up and go.”
Motivational Quote – “I always know you can’t have a rainbow without some rain.”
Life Experience Helps – “Nothing’s ever that bad. It just isn’t. It might feel it for a moment, but I think the longer you’re around, you realise you’ve been there before. You got through it. This happened and sometimes, instead of a bus, a limo comes along.”

What We Recommended:
Tools & Apps
MotionX – “I actually use this app called MotionX. It’s a bit of a sleep app. It’s got this wind down where you will put it on and it will sort of play ocean sounds and you can just lie there. It’s a bit like a head space, mindfulness strategy just to stop or to slow down, and that sort of drifts me off.
Blinkist – précises of books to read and listen to. “You’re familiar with the app Blinkist as well. I know we’ve talked about that in the past, and sometimes listening to a book where your eyes aren’t active. It’s just you can just close your eyes and just listen to something and let the information settle in, and that sometimes drifts me off as well.”
MyFitnessPal – “That’s something I use more. It gave me a good understanding of what I was eating because you can scan barcodes. I’m quite a healthy guy. I’m not overweight or anything, but I had no idea how or what concept a calorie was. Never counted them ever, and I thought, “Okay. Well, I’m trying to put weight on.” I’m in a body building phase. I’m not going to be Arnold Schwarzenegger, but I had to get a grip of good calories, bad calories, and that’s what led me onto the whole nutrition path as well. It gives you a better idea and fact about what is actually happening here.”
Lightroom – “I use Lightroom now for my photography
Final Cut – “for any editing”
Logic Pro – “for audio”
Trello – “is my to-do list. I’m very visual, so I find I like moving things from left to right once they get done. It’s great for that. It’s great for just sliding things across without too much effort. Trello I use as a task board, but also the ideas board. I’ve got boards for Aroha in terms of client management and things we’ve done which I share with my business partner. Then I have one for Drgnfly360.”
Evernote – “I’m a big fan of Evernote. It’s sort of my brain outside of my head as I’ve heard it referred to once and I refer to it myself. I do all my thinking and capture all my ideas and notes that relate to anything that I’m dealing with in any of my projects. I love the search facility within Evernote and the [filing 00:20:48], so we use that a lot for any content. We draft up contracts, agreements, ideas up, our processes sometimes are even labelled out there. That then gives us a resource because I can share that folder. I’m a premium user so I’ve got a lot more capabilities. Then I share that folder again with my business partner. I even share a folder with my wife which we call our home folder, so all the shopping lists get created in there, and we take snapshots of our bills. It’s a nice one stop shop where you can go search things out and go from there. My top two would be that first one, compartmentalising by having a notebook, then breaking your life into categories that you want to work on, contexts as they’re called. The second is studying. Every time I’m learning something I’ll start a notebook, and for every chapter topic within there I have a note, and the great thing I lucky about Evernote is you can then turn all of those notes into a table of contents at the top. You go into there and it creates these hyperlinks, so you just read through, boom, and then go straight to that notebook. It’s got a lot, a lot of features that I love and use daily.
Jo said “When I am in a meeting I love the fact that I can take notes straight into Evernote which means I never have to write them up again, and I can find them again, and I can even create checklists and to-do lists from them without having to use anything else, and just thinking back a long time since I’ve not used it, but to writing handwritten meeting notes and then looking at them day in, day out in my in-tray while I kept telling myself I needed to type them up but never got round to it. I don’t need to anymore.”
Pocket – “It’s my favourite reader, and the one thing I love about it is that the articles are available offline, so if you send anything to it say from Feedly, you can actually have a good read offline, underground. We’re always underground on a train or anything like that. It’s all there and you can then forward it to any of the other apps that you want for storage like Evernote. That’s one of my favourites that I’m using at the moment.”
Other Resources
MacProVideo – “I have access to a website called macProVideo, and that basically gives you tutorials on every bit of software that’s out there in the world. It’s like Lynda.com. You might have heard of that.”
Music
“I’m a very big fan of Motown, soul, anything all the way up to the high BPMs of the electronic dance music today like jungle and drum and bass, but what I really like is it’s definitely got to be the Motown. I’ve got a record collection. I don’t know. People don’t use those anymore, but I’ve got a vast, a vast record collection sitting right behind me, and I like to pull them out and just dust off anything from Earth, Wind, and Fire. Don’t laugh.
Films
“I love a good movie. I like my horrors. I like edgy things like some of Guy Ritchie’s films or Quentin Tarantino. I like the edgy. [inaudible 00:30:11] with people that take the intros very seriously with the artwork and that really … That’s my creative edge.”
Tips
“I’m a big fan of lemon tea in the mornings to sort of kick start my digestive system before I eat.”
“Getting up that early sort of gives me that time to look at my day, see what I’ve got to do, and then get mentally prepared for it”
“I like to just stick with one topic so that I will make a lot of progress in one evening, whether I’m writing articles for the blog or touching photos up and doing the albums. I like to do a bulk load of work and then I’m happy with where that project is, and I find that I move a lot faster that way rather than spending an hour then shifting topics.”
“As you can imagine task management is crucial here, and I like to organise my days so the middle of the week, so Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday I call project nights, so Monday and Friday is just relax, get into the week and spend some time with my wife in the evenings. Tuesday through to Thursday are project nights, so I pick a day to focus on each of those projects just so that I know I’ve got that time to do that. It keeps me on top of everything.”
“One of my early revelations was I just want to be happy, and it’s not a destination, it’s the journey, so one day I just started thinking about, “Okay. Well … ” I was in a bad place and a bit of a turbulent childhood. I thought, “This is it. I’m just going to be happy.” The next morning, woke up. Made myself the best cup of tea. It just starts from the simple things. You know?”
“Healthy mind, healthy body, and if you’re not making time for health, you’re making time for sickness. Isn’t that right?”
“On the whole sort of nutrition tip I steer away from white rice, white pasta, white breads. I’ve learned a bit more about gluten free and I’m trying to incorporate that in terms of prevention of later degenerative effects.”
“It’s about like having a 360 look at your world, your situation, and quantifying how satisfied you are with various areas, whether it’s health, work, your hobbies, your relationships, et cetera. I actually have a quantified system where it gives you a number at the end of it and then you can work on your lowest satisfaction rating. I urge your readers have a look at it. It’s on my website and any questions I can always answer them. I’m more than happy to do that.”
“To relax. The reading does take me down. I like to surf around on the net a lot in terms of travel. My wife and I we just recently qualified as scuba divers, so I’m constantly on the net trying to find good locations to dive. I’m definitely a warm water fan though. I can’t stand the cold water.”
“Because of obviously the progresses that I’ve made now from my early days of being a milk runner. It was my first ever job was running milk to people’s doors and collecting the tokens. When things don’t go right for me I always just think of the progress that I’ve made, and progress. I remind people if they’re in the same position about the progresses they’ve made, and things could always be worse, Jo. They can always be worse.”
“The trick is how you take it on board, what you learn from it, and how then are you going to turn this into a success. Again, everything is always a work in progress, but without your failures you don’t learn the greatest lessons, and winning isn’t as good if you don’t fail.”

POWER to Live More with Jo Dodds
Page to View Diary, ValueAddon, Living your Dream and a Whiteboard with Roy Carter of IM Income Builders Club.
What We Recommended:
Tools & Apps
Page a Day Diary – “I’ve been in corporate life and all the rest of it, in the long, distance past now, but I’ve never really found a better way of organising myself than the good old-fashioned page-a-day diary that I use. What I’ll usually do is I’ll have like three main, what I call PFA tasks, so I call them prime focus activity tasks, that I want to get done as a priority each day. They’re prime focus activities because they bring money in, so they get done first. As long as I get those, usually three main PFA tasks done in a day, I’m happy.
Whiteboard – “I’ve got a whiteboard in front of me as I speak now, I’m looking at that on the wall. I know at any given time what the income is for the month, the number of members this month compared to last month of my main IM Income Builders Club. I have other membership programmes as well. It’s all in front of me at a glance.“
AWeber and GetResponse “I use them to send out emails, and broadcast emails, and sequential emails that go out with lessons for my membership programmes, things like that. I rely heavily on that, and that’s magic. I just think they’re a major part of my business, the autoresponders.”
ValueAddOn – “The membership tool that I’ve just starting using, which I run my main membership programme IM Income Builders Club from. It’s all run from this one tool, which is an online. It’s so simple and easy to use. Intuitive to use right from the get go, which is good for me because I’m a complete technophobe. It does everything I want it do. I have video lessons in there for my members, because most of my training’s done by videos, step-by-step videos. All the videos are hosted in there by them too, so I don’t have worry about hosting. It’s a brilliant tool if you want to run your own membership programme. It’s really way too inexpensive for what it does. I think it’s about $37 a month or something ridiculous like that. It’s quite incredible. I mean, it does everything I need it to do, and it’s making me an awful lot of money in terms of my membership programme.”
Dropbox – “Then I’d have to say probably Dropbox where I can save everything, you know, all my work and files. I access that anywhere I happen to be in the world.”
Books
“Well, obviously everyone obviously has to read a book called, ‘Can A Beer Mat Change Your Life?’ Yeah, that’s a great book, it’s called, ‘Can A Beer Mat Change Your Life?’ It’s a really good book. It’s available on Amazon. It’s by a really clever and a very hugely handsome guy called Roy Carter!!”
“I tend to like books by entrepreneurs who kind of think outside the square a bit. One of the very first books that I remember reading when I was younger, of that type, of somebody who really thinks outside the square, was a book called, ‘The Lazy Man’s Way To Riches’. It’s by a guy called, Joe Karbo. Obviously the title is ‘The Lazy Man’s Way to Riches’ or whatever, but it’s much more than that. He tells how, during the Great Depression in America, he made a lot of money in a lot of quite ingenious ways. Even during that Great Depression time, when everyone was suffering.”
“As for probably the best book I’ve ever read, fairly recently actually, probably only a few months ago, it was recommended to me by my mentor, and the book is called, ‘Straightline Leadership’. and it’s by a guy called Dusan Djukich and it honestly is superb. I read it in one sitting, I couldn’t actually put it down. It was an absolute epiphany to me. I actually now recommend every consulting client that comes on with me, I recommend that they read that book, because it’s such an eye opener. Yeah, without a doubt, it’s the best book I’ve ever read.
It’s not just about leadership. If you think about leadership, it’s also about leading yourself rather than leading others, or as well as leading others. It simplifies things down when you really look at it, because it gets yourself to ask yourself questions about your own business. For example, you know, it’s so simple, like he does a 4 step thing where he says, “Okay looking at your business, so what you’re really looking at is what’s working. What’s not working. What’s missing and what’s next.” You know, that’s just a simple example of how he breaks things down in one respect.
Then he’ll say things like, “Okay a decision about this particular activity – do you do it, do you drop it or do you delegate it?” When you look at the book, I’m going to read it again and again, because it was just a bit of an epiphany for me. I’m big on simplifying things for other people, and trying to make things easy for my consulting clients and members, and everything else like that. I like to keep things simple.
This book, when you read it, Straightline Leadership, it just opened my eyes, to think about things in a different way. I would recommend anyone who runs their own business or feels that they’re an entrepreneur in any way, get that book and read it, because I think you’ll be glad you did.”
Music
“I’ve got a really varied taste in music. I like people like Jason Mraz, pretty much anything by Jason Mraz. He’s great.
“Diana Krall, I don’t know if you’re familiar with Diana Krall? She’s amazing. I just love her stuff. It’s so smoky and jazzy and relaxed. She’s really great.”
Films
“The Shawshank Redemption would probably be one of my favourites. You know, that’s ages old now, but a classic I think.”
“I’m a bit of a romantic so, Clint Eastwood did one called, ‘The Bridges of Madison County’, which is a real great, sort of weepy thing, you know, showing my romantic side.”
Tips
Planning the Day Before – “Before I stop work, or in the afternoon or whenever it is, I’ll actually note down in the diary the things that I want to get done the following day. It’s classic time management stuff really. You don’t wake up in the morning and think, “Okay well what am I going to do today?” and waste the first hour wondering what you’re going to do, it’s already there and laid out for you.”
Three Monthly Planning – “I don’t look much more than about three months ahead because I think a lot can happen in three months and things can change a lot, you know. I’ll say, “Okay, this is where I want to be in three months’ time. This is where I want to be in a month’s time.” Generally, what I tend to do is I’m working month to month, so I know what I want to achieve this month
Fishing to Relax – “I find that when I’m fishing I can just empty my head of anything really. Everything else just goes and I’m completely sort of in the moment and at peace when I’m fishing.”
Learning and Personal Development – “I spend a lot of money on different programmes just to keep abreast of what people are doing in the marketing online industry. I spend a lot of money on that just keep myself up with most things, but really, I’ll usually be working with a mentor. Very expensive in one sense, I mean, I’ve worked with a couple of mentors, two or three mentors, and they’re extremely good and at the top of their profession at what they do. It’s not cheap, it’s very expensive in one sense to be with them and learn from them, but unbelievably inexpensive really, when you look at what you learn and how you that can contribute vastly to your bottom line and your profits. From my mentors alone, I know that I’ve learnt a lot from my mentors. I’ve very nearly been about to make a major maybe and they’ve said, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, don’t do that. Do it this way”. Just that one like thirty-minute conversation has changed the entire bottom line for me over the next God knows how many months.”
When Things Go Wrong – “I think the older you get, you put things in perspective a little bit better. For me, now when things don’t go right, and that happens you know, the fact is, I always think, well tomorrow’s another day. Life is always full of highs and lows really, as we know, as everyone knows. Sometimes, if it isn’t going right, I’ll usually step completely away from it, and I’ll just go for a walk or I’ll take myself off fishing, take the day off. Sometimes I’ll just say to Lin, “Do you know what? Blow this, let’s go get some lunch somewhere and forget the day.” That’s what we’ll do. Then what I’ll then is, I’ll come back to the problem with a completely fresh mind. That’s the way I handle it.”
Dealing with Problems – One piece of advice I have given to my mentoring clients and consulting clients is, when you’ve got a problem, it doesn’t matter whether it’s health or financial worries or someone you love or care for, whatever it is, the one thing I will say is, that you will always, always start to feel better about things the minute that you start to take action, some form of action and doing something about the problem. The moment you start doing something to actually take action and resolve the problem, however little that action might be, you’re doing something.”
Living your Dreams – “A client said to me recently, “Oh I’d love to live on an island.” I said, “Look, it’s not as difficult to live on a tropical island as you think it is. What you have to do is, just decide that that’s what you’re going to do and go ahead and make it happen”. It’s not as difficult as people think.
Helping Clients – “I call it, shining the light on their pathway to success, kind of thing. What you are, is you’re really just a cog in the wheel that shows them the right way really.”
