Amber Christian: Kickstarting Your Productivity

Eric Partaker: Achieving Peak Productivity Performance

Eric Partaker is a Peak Performance Coach helping CEOs and founders in the tech industry to fulfill their productivity and leadership potential.
Eric began his career as a consultant with McKinsey & Company and went on to help build Skype before selling it to eBay in 2005. After the success of Skype, Eric wanted to get back to doing something that would fulfill him personally and decided to combine his love of restaurants and Mexican culture to start a Mexican restaurant chain.
Although they seem varied, Eric’s career choices have always been influenced by his desire to be challenged and inspired. His current endeavour as a Peak Performance Expert has allowed him to share his unique set of skills and knowledge with others in the business world and to continue pursuing his own version of his best self.
Eric was named “CEO of the Year” at the 2019 Business Awards and one of the “Top 30 Entrepreneurs in the UK” by Startups Magazine. His book, The 3 Alarms: A Simple System to Transform Your Health, Wealth, and Relationships Forever, was released in 2020.
In today’s episode, Eric and I discuss his unusual path to coaching and why he believes that the road to success is different for everyone. He shares what inspired him to begin his own journey to “peak performance” and why he constantly strives to be among the best in whatever he does.

Henry Daas: Getting Your Head in the Game

Henry Daas is a serial entrepreneur, business and financial genius, screenwriter, and blogger who helps coach his clients to be more financially successful through his company Daas Knowledge.
His background in financial and business management allows him to show entrepreneurs ways to break through the revenue plateau and thrive in their business rather than just survive.
Henry currently lives in New Jersey, with his wife of 30 years, although he loves being location independent. In his leisure time, he enjoys playing golf and tennis, writing books and screenplays, travelling, and collecting baseball cards.
Henry joins me today to share how he manages his time and workload to be as productive as possible, including how he coaches his clients to use their ‘optimal time’ to get tasks done.
We discuss his entrepreneurial apprenticeship, why he always planned to start his own business, and how the practicalities of entrepreneurship have evolved over the last 30 years. Henry also shares his experience of the psychology of business and the habits that ensure he is in the best mental space to have a calm and successful day while achieving his goals.

We’re doing a lot of our learning via new online technologies now. It’s quite interesting just to reflect on that.”
Books
Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn, which is a meditation book about mindfulness meditation.
Succulent Wild Woman by Sark. “She’s an artist who has pretty much built a business empire, become a very savvy businesswoman. She just writes these books that … They’re funny, they’re creative and artistic. They’ve got lots of drawings in them. They’re all about living life succulently, dancing with your wonderful self.”
The Four-Fold Way. “This is a leadership book. It’s Walking the Path of the Warrior, Teacher, Healer, and Visionary, and it’s by Angeles Arrien. She’s an anthropologist. This was the textbook that my life coach gave me when I was in my mid-20s, maybe, and I did a life coaching programme.”
The Omnivore’s Dilemma, which is about food “because I was a vegetarian for about twelve years, and this is one of the books that I ended up moving back to eating meat again”.
Radical Simplicity, “which is all about basically a “less is more” approach to living your life. That’s really influenced where we’ve taken the business, really, if I think about it, because it’s all about how the choices that you make in terms of what you spend and how you set your life up influence how much you need to work and what we can do to set ourselves up so that we are having a smaller footprint on the earth as well as being able to do more of what we love doing and not be focused on having to work, work, work, work to pay the bills or pay the mortgage or whatever it is that’s putting that pressure on us.
Tips
“I guess the key one here for us, and what we’re teaching about a lot is around strategy, because we believe that no matter how many to-do lists you have or how many amazing technological tools you’re using, if you don’t have your strategy right, it doesn’t matter. You’re still not going to achieve what you’re setting out to achieve if you don’t have the right strategy in place. We consistently see people spending a lot of time on things that aren’t actually contributing to what it is they want to achieve in their business.”
“What we do to be really productive and really focused is we have two really clear milestones that we have for our business. Usually one’s around an income generation milestone and one’s, for us, an audience building milestone.”
“We have what we call a parking lot, which is where we put things where we’re like, “Should we really be working on this right now?” You know those bright, shiny objects that come up and you’re like, “This looks really cool, but should we actually be doing it right now?” We’re constantly asking ourselves that question. If it’s a “no,” if it doesn’t fit with what our current targets are, then we put it in the parking lot and come back to it later.”
“I work three hours a week on my passion project as well, which is a river project. That keeps us busy outside of work.”
“I guess as I get older I’m getting better at being more aware and noticing my signs for when I’m getting out of balance, when I’m over-tired, when I need to take some time for myself. I definitely still don’t get it right all the time, but I’m getting there. That’s probably one of my biggest learnings, is just how important it is to give yourself that time when you need it to be able to recognise those signs and also just keep perspective about what’s important and what’s not.”

“I’ve been going through a phase of trying to get out for an evening walk a couple of times a week too, and I tend to listen to podcasts then. Sometimes I’ll listen to business-related stuff, especially because we’re launching our own podcast at the moment, but often I’ll just listen to stuff that I’m interested in as well. There’s just so much there to discover. It’s incredible.”

“What I do is I’m a member of an online gym called foreverfit.tv, which is run by a Kiwi woman called Nicola Smith. I’ve interviewed her a couple of times, actually. I love her business model and I love what she’s doing. She’s a personal trainer who took her business online, and she’s got this incredible online gym. It’s packed full of quick and easy workouts that are really effective.”

“A book that I’ve read recently which I have recommended to so many people now – I really should be on commission but sadly I’m not – is a book called ‘Turn The Ship Around’ by David L. Marquet. An absolutely fascinating book. I highly, highly recommend it. I’ve recommended it to lots of people that I have been working with over the last 3 or 4 months.”
Productivity
“I have in front of me a large yellow pad which, which has 5 columns down it, vertical columns and each of those columns are a day of the week. Normally on a Saturday morning, when I’m just wrapping things up before I start to enjoy my weekend, I allow myself an hour on Saturday morning and I plan what I’m going to do on each of my 90 minutes across the week for the following week.”
“I’m also a big mind mapper. The tool that I use is a mind mapping tool called Simple Mind. They do a free version which is very, very good or you can upgrade to the all singing all dancing version. I will often then transfer what I’ve started in sort of embryonic form in the notepad. I’ll then work that up into a full blown mind map on the Simple Mind and then of course you can print that out if you need to. A lot of my project work starts that way.”

Books
‘Build Your Business In 90 Minutes a Day’ by Nigel Botterill and Martin Gladdish. The central message of the book is that if you set a period of time, Nigel recommends 90 minutes but you can have any set period of time, first thing in the morning and you absolutely minimise every single distraction that you can possibly have to enable you to focus for those 90 minutes. When I read this, I mean it’s such basic common sense, when I read it and then decided to implement it, the change was really transformational.

Sleep
Minimising Jetlag – “In terms of jetlag, the thing that I have learnt over the last few years, really be choosy about your flights. I mean, working out, if you can, when you land in the new country I always try and make it some time in the afternoon local time because then I’ve only got a few hours before local time it will be bedtime. I find that can very, very quickly get on to, successfully get on to local time.”
Sleep and Water – “Make sure you get plenty of sleep, make sure you drink plenty of water and you eat healthy and magically that way you seem to be able to get through the week. If you stop doing those things and starting to burn the candle at both ends, then don’t be surprised when by Thursday you’re feeling completely, you’re completely shuttered.”
Exercise
Walking – “I’m pretty lucky that I live in South Buckinghamshire, in a little village, and we’re surrounded by open countryside and woods and some beautiful bridleways and walks around here. Walking is very high on my priority of activities.
Meditation and Mindfulness
“I practice mindfulness and we factor mindfulness into a number of our programmes, our leadership programmes in particular, and I have a really good mindfulness app on my iPhone which are a series of guided meditations of varying lengths and you can just get in when you’re on a train and you’re thinking, “Oh I just I need to do a little bit of meditation”. You can stick your headphones in and hit the button and it comes up with a lovely guided meditation for 5, 10, 15, I think some are even 30 minutes in duration. I think it’s just called Mindfulness.
When stuff goes wrong – “Okay, it didn’t go according to plan. There will be learning that you can take from this and as long as you apply that then there is likelihood that you’ll get some benefit from it. The alternative is just to beat yourself up and get thoroughly miserable. That’s not really worth it at the end of the day. It’s something that mindfulness has taught me as well – is the power of letting go of things that bother you and worry you. That would be my top tip for bad days. Reflection and then thinking what could have been better and a bit of mindfulness to prevent a sleepless night.”

“The movie about the financial crush with Steve Carell and … Is it called Big Short? The Big Short I think it’s called. It’s about the guys who try and bet against the US housing market. If you haven’t seen it, it’s an amazing film. At times funny and other times absolutely jaw dropping because you begin to realise how inappropriate, should we say, the whole financial structure was around mortgages in the US leading up to the 2008/2009 crash.

If you are ever in London and looking for a taxi; look no further than this app.
When I worked in London I was always lamenting how I never seemed to be able to find a free black cab when I needed one. I used to play netball at Blackfriars, along from our office in Cannon Street and we were often late or out of breath from lots of running when we couldn’t find that elusive taxi!
With Gett it allows you to ‘summon’ a black cab and, once it’s set up, pay by card as part of the app. It has been so useful in the years that I’ve been using it.
The best example of how useful it is was when I was speaking at an event at Birmingham University with the man who headed up the London 2012 Gamesmakers and I impressed him by finding us a black cab when it was chucking it down with rain and no cabs were visible anywhere. As we were trying to think of our strategy I realised that gett works in Birmingam too so we then easily got a cab!

Receipt Bank
I’ve just been sorting out my expenses for last month and was reminded how useful this app is. Receipt Bank is a tool that allows you to scan receipts on your phone or email invoices into it and it then converts them into accounting records and sends them to one of a number of accounts systems (I use Kashflow).
It’s really helped me to get on top of my accounts and expenses and stops me having a pile of random bits of paper my desk that get in the way, get me down…and get me behind on my accounts!
I scan receipts at the point of purchase and throw the receipt away. If I’m really organised and charging the expense back to a client I can add them into a field to allow me to run reports based on the client’s name, which makes invoicing so much quicker.

Mohammed ElKhamissy: The Power of Living with Intention

In 2001, Mohammed Elkhamissy found himself a new graduate in the wake of 9/11 and unable to get a job. He had grown up playing soccer competitively and had initially thought he would go on to play professionally.
When that didn’t come to fruition and he found himself unemployable as a Middle Eastern American in a post-9/11 world, he began reaching out to connections. He wound up working for a construction company and discovered that he had an affinity for the business. He now lives in Qatar and runs one of the top construction companies in the region.
Though Mohammad had achieved a lot of material success, when he discovered that his young daughter had been diagnosed with cancer, everything he had prioritised to that point vanished. He found that it didn’t matter how great his car was or how successful he was. Through his study of Stoicism, he discovered that living positively is a choice and that when you live authentically, you can give back immensely.
In the wake of his daughter’s illness, Mohammad has taken his commitment to giving back to new levels. He is an angel investor and is setting up a female entrepreneurship fund that will debut next year.
Today Mohammad and I discuss the power of connections and how they can feed your personal journey.
He touches on the importance of prioritising what makes you happy and why choosing optimism can impact the world around you.
He shares his routines and tools for staying focused, how his life changed with his daughter’s illness, and why being “average” is an asset. We also discusses the importance of choosing to live with intention and how it can fuel success.

Evernote – “I’m a Virgo who loves lists. My essential tool of life which includes work, and play, and organising everything else, is Evernote. I’m not quite sure how I possibly existed before Evernote came on the scene. I’m a massive fan of Evernote. You’ve got to get into it, and buy into it. It’s kind of like a sort of effortless solution, and you can share what you’re doing with those that are also on Evernote. I think it’s like a killer app that is just gorgeous, and whatever you want, music, videos, photos. It’s kind of like a sort of seamless snapshot of stored ideas, and information.”

Note from Jo – I’ve started using it to scan in stuff that I’ve previously kept, like orders of service at weddings or cards that people have sent me and things like that. I just scan them in and then chuck them away, so that I don’t have a load of old bits of paper in the house.
Dream It Alive – “It’s a place where you can create your own vision boards and dream boards. We all need to dream and we all need to have goals. It’s about writing them down, but you need to turn them into pictures so you can see them. It helps you visualise.”
Pocket – “The other one is Pocket, because yes, you’ll see something, and where do you put … if you just kind of store it in a place that gets lost, you won’t go back to it, but you can build up your Pocket to be those things that you can have a look at.”
Scoop-It – “I do also like, for those that don’t have time to blog, but have an area that’s their subject, whatever it might be, Scoop.It, so you can create your own sort of Scoop and write your own comments on X, Y or Z.”
Rebel Mouse – “This aggregates all your tweets and pins, and it has a snapshot of your social output. You can see what you’re doing, and you get a feeling for who you are and what you’re putting out there. If you don’t like what you see, change it.”
Alpabetizer – “The last one is called the Alphabetizer. If you have a list of things, twenty things, and you’ve got to put them in alphabetical order, then use the alphabetizer, because it’ll do it for you. Well, there you go. I know, that’s totally useless, but someone might need it one day!

Medium Daily Digest – “I really like Medium Daily Digest. Today’s Medium Daily Digest, it had these … It’s kind of eclectic things, because they always set me off. Today’s articles that I liked, one was, “Elevate Yourself with Side Projects,” which I think is a very good thing, because if you’re only doing one thing, and you’re consumed by it … I’ve always got at least six other plates spinning that I’m doing, so it’s not just Sister Snog, or family, or friends. I’ve always got other things that are on the go. I think it’s important, because otherwise, you just become one-dimensional. The other article, it was called, “Collecting Experiences.” How to stay productive even when interrupted, which I thought was very relevant to today. The other one, “Does a ‘Fake It ‘Til You Make It’ Attitude Towards Business Work? Yes.” If you want to be someone, even if you’re not it, behave as if you are, and you will become it.”

Disco – “I’m just inspired by all disco music. That’s what I always have on in the background if I’m getting myself into a good frame of mind. That’s me personally, being a disco queen.”
Films
Overcoming Struggle – “I’m quite often inspired by films that have a certain amount of overcoming struggle, that people have got through something, they face something, because running your own business, being an entrepreneur, you do have to sometimes find something in yourself on the days where perhaps, everything isn’t quite rosy and peachy.”
Watching Films to Relax – “I also am definitely a Netflix addict. I might have it on in the background. I do like things that are series, Netflix original, House of Cards, Since Orphan Black, Once Upon A Time. I really like anything that’s got a story that continues. In fact, Once Upon a Time did inspire Once Upon a Dinner Time. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but it’s all about fairy tales. It’s just fantastic and seems to be going on forever.”
Tips
Business Connectedness – “you need to be connected in business, because everybody is connected to each other, and that’s how you’ll get the doors open. They feed me, I feed them, and then quite often we come up with something that is because of both of us. That is my work, so how brilliant is that?”
Planning – The beginning of the week, Monday, I see as a planning day, and a desk day where I generally will not go into London. Mondays are when I will catch up, will make phone calls, will send emails, will plan, maybe it’s just something I’ve got to write, who I’m going to see.”
Magical Connections – “It’s amazing what happens when two people sit down and just talk about whatever is going on in their business.”
Being Focused on the Important Stuff – “I’m never too busy, I’m always doing lots of things”
Cooking to Relax – “Cooking is something that I do.
Morning Gratitude Routine – “I do have a little bit of reflection before I switch the motor on. I’ve kind of got into morning gratitude, so I will, in Evernote, in my notebook that’s called “Gratitudes,” write something that I’m quite thankful for, on a daily basis. I think you can get caught up in other stuff. Seven is the kind of magic number at Sister Snog, so I always write seven gratitudes, nearly always, most days.”
Using a Personal Trainer – “Goodness, me. It’s brilliant. She really is brilliant. It is early days. I haven’t transformed yet. She’s really good because she looks at … It’s not about doing some crazy boot camp training thing, because I don’t wish to be tortured. She’s also helping me … What I love about her is we can train anywhere. I’m kind of helping her understand her business, as well. One of the things is, how to turn your home into a gym. I have exercises now to do on the steps, to do on a chair, even things to pick up around the house. That’s what we’re going to do, and we will do, in due course, some videos of “Turn Your House Into a Gym.” Now there’s no excuses for not doing 20 minutes, and then having a break and doing another 20 minutes.”
Swimming for Exercise – “I was swimming when I was in Greenwich, two or three times a week. An early morning swim, I always wanted to be the first in the pool. That was my kind of … I just want to be first in the pool. I never was, but I still have that. It makes you sort of get up and go.”
Motivational Quote – “I always know you can’t have a rainbow without some rain.”
Life Experience Helps – “Nothing’s ever that bad. It just isn’t. It might feel it for a moment, but I think the longer you’re around, you realise you’ve been there before. You got through it. This happened and sometimes, instead of a bus, a limo comes along.”
