On Abusive Relationships with guest Emily Edgar

Episode in Pulling Roots
Brown Girls: http://www.browngirlswebseries.com/ CW: Abusive Relationship, Mental Illness, Suicide We’re super excited about this week’s episode. Emily is a goddamn delight and we are so grateful she shared her story with us. Abuse doesn’t always look the same across the board, and Emily’s story is just one of many types of abusive relationships that exist out there. She is not a standard that anyone in abusive relationship should compare themselves too or criticize themselves against – she’s just one woman with a story that may help others feel less alone. Emily shared with us what’s it like to be in a seemingly perfect relationship, then to have her partner flip a complete 180. She tells us what it feels like to experience a partner start to use manipulation tactics and attempt to isolate her from her friends and family, and when she tried to tell others about it, no one believed her. After sharing her story she gives advice to people struggling in abusive relationships – we think a lot of people can learn a lot and find solace in Emily’s story. Thanks for listening! Water is Life (Part 2) with Reinette Tendore

Episode in Pulling Roots
Reinette was on the Standing Rock reservation when the police began using water cannons on protestors in sub-freezing temperatures. She shares her experience at the scene, and talks about racism and bigotry she's faced in her life growing up in Wyoming. Reinette also discusses being a part of a Matriarchal community. She is a hardworking, passionate and inspiring individual and you'll love her story. Water is Life with Reinette Tendore

Episode in Pulling Roots
As you all sit down with your families, or whoever you are choosing to spend your tine with this week, I hope you are grateful for the things in your life that you do have and that you take this opportunity to reflect on why we Americans celebrate this holiday. For this episode, I sat down with Reinette Tendore, a Native American woman who is a graduate student at the University of Wyoming in social work. I met Reinette at a NODAPL (No Dakota Access Pipeline) protest on campus. In our brief conversation, we talked about what the Dakota Access Pipeline is, the consequences of its construction, and some myths she’d like to clear up about the pipeline, the protests, and Native people in general. This is Part One of my conversation with Reinette, and I’m looking forward to sharing the second part of our conversation where we dive much deeper into who Reinette is as a person and how her heritage informs her everyday life. If you can, please donate to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in anyway you can. Below, I’ve linked to several articles that share the Native perspective, some information about the Dakota Access Pipeline, and several ways to help. Native Americans explain why "Thanksgiving" holiday is celebration of genocide: “We’re certainly not against giving thanks. As indigenous people we give thanks every day ... The issue here with the Thanksgiving holiday as celebrated in the United States is that it perpetuates this myth that the wonderful Pilgrims came here from Europe and were so kind and good to the Native people who were here and lived happily ever after,” said Mahtowin Munro, co-leader of the United American Indians of New England. http://www.finalcall.com/artman/publish/National_News_2/article_8344.shtml Here’s What’s Happening With the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests http://time.com/4578753/dakota-access-pipeline-protest-latest/ Democracy Now! Faith and Feminism with Sara Burlingame

Episode in Pulling Roots
It's tomorrow, you guys. You've heard it all, and you have no excuse not to vote. Find your polling place by googling "Where is my polling place" and entering your address. In Wyoming, we can register to vote at the polls if you bring two proofs of residency. "If you sit this election out and Trump wins by a few votes, many people are going to be dealing with that reality for their entire lives." Please don't vote third party. Voting for Hillary is the only way to defeat Trump, and she will do an exemplary job as our president. I recorded this conversation with Sara Burlingame of Wyoming Equality back in July, looking out over downtown Cheyenne during Frontier Days. Wyoming Equality (http://wyomingequality.org/) "seeks to enhance the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in the Equality State by providing: Education, Information, Activities, Support, a Networking System, and an Advocacy System for people impacted by gender and sexual orientation issues." Sara talks a bit about her work with Wyoming Equality, and dives deep into how different religions make room (or don't!)for LGBTQ youth. We talk about the Mormon exclusion policy (to exclude children of same-sex couples from getting blessed and baptized until they are 18), and Mormon Feminism. We also talk about how to constructively and respectfully talk to people we disagree with, which is some advice we all can really use right now. I hope you enjoy it, and that I go to bed tomorrow knowing I helped elect our first female president. Please help me make it happen. Mental Illness is a Feminist Issue with Jessica Fahlsing

Episode in Pulling Roots
Jessica was diagnosed with depression and anxiety at 11 years old, and was hospitalized for her eating disorder at 13. She grew up in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and describes how rural Wyoming can often be a breeding ground for mental illness due to the lack of resources available for individuals who need it. Jessica has begun writing a memoir with her mother, where they both provide their perspective on Jessica's struggle. I was lucky enough to read the first couple drafts of it, and can't wait until it is published and the rest of the world gets to experience Jessica's story. Her mission is to combat the stigma that surrounds mental illness. She asserts that people with depression are not lazy, that seeking help is not a weakness, and that with the right tools, you can come into the light again. This isn't a conversation to miss. Episode 24: Female Body Hair with Maggie Mullen

Episode in Pulling Roots
Will guys still think I'm hot if I stop shaving? Does it matter? Am I a bad feminist if I shave? What if I start shaving again after a long period of not shaving? Does that mean I will get kicked out of the feminist club? Am I wrong for wanting guys to find me attractive and grooming myself in accordance to that? Should I care what guys think of me? Is it okay to pluck my eyebrows even if I don't shave my legs or is that hypocritical?! Listen and see if you can find some answers. Thanks for being patient on my brief hiatus, and thanks for listening. To kick of this next wave of episodes, enjoy my conversation with WPR's Maggie Mullen. We talk about her thesis on Female Body Hair in Contemporary American Culture, talk about how female pleasure isn't mentioned or discussed at all in sex ed and the media at large (or at least wasn't when we were growing up), the male gaze when it comes to grooming habits of women. Academia For Social Justice With Austin Morgan

Episode in Pulling Roots
Today on the podcast, I have Austin Morgan on to talk about a bunch of different things. I originally had him on because I knew how smart he was and how much he cared about feminist issues. I wanted to talk to him about the importance of thinking critically to form opinions and be an activist and being an ally. We did talk about those things, but also talked about the incredible research he is doing about Gay men and their use of Grindr as a sanctuary in a rural place like Wyoming. He concluded from his study that Grindr, while not entirely safe, is a safer and more welcoming space than Wyoming society—a space whose pervasive cultural homophobia forecloses on the social citizenship of the young gay men who call it home. It’s a really interesting study and he got published for it in psychology today, a link for which is in the show notes. Check it out! One of my favorite things about this conversation is that it didn’t really head where I expected to at all. The thing I really got out of it is the passion that Austin, a 20 year old who is incredibly smart and ambitious, has for other young people being invested in in terms of their education. He talks about how many compliments he gets for being so young and doing so much research, taking graduate level classes as an undergrad and getting such good grades, but he feels that if all children and young people were as invested in as he was during his education, we could all be doing this. I thought it was a beautiful sentiment. Before I cut to the interview, I want to say a few words about the Orlando gay club massacre. I don’t exactly know what to say. First, I’m incredibly saddened to how desensitized I and other Americans have come from seeing mass shootings in the headlines so often. Second, my heart aches. The internet isn’t always the best place to go in times like these – I watched a snap chat video of a woman who was killed at the nightclub as shots were being fired in the background. I read stories about the people documenting the scene of the crime listening to the phones of the victims ringing as their loved ones called them trying to locate them and know that they are okay. This is a hate crime, and an attack on the queer community. We need queer pride more than ever. Here’s the conversation with Austin, and please check out his work in psychology today. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/in-the-life/201605/out-in-wyoming Instagram: @pullingrootspodcast Twitter: @pullingroots Email: pullingrootspodcast@gmail.com Donate (and get a free shirt/sticker): https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=pullingrootspodcast%40gmail%2ecom&lc=US&item_name=Pulling%20Roots%20Podcast&currency_code=USD&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF%3abtn_donateCC_LG%2egif%3aNonHosted

Veganism And Masculinity With David, Cole And Adam

Episode in Pulling Roots
“I see veganism as limiting unnecessary suffering, it’s as simple as that.” “I’m at a place in my life where I don’t have to use animals to survive.” “Realize the importance of what exactly you put into your body.” “Are animals commodities or living things?” I sat down with two friends Cole and David and my partner Adam, all of whom are vegan, to talk about what it's like living a life free of consuming animal products. We talk about our original perceptions of veganism and vegetarianism, myths surrounding the diet, and tips for cutting out meat, eggs and dairy. We talk about the construct of masculinity in general and how diet plays in to that, along with pressures from father-son traditions that women may not have experience with. We also discuss the differences in responses that women will get when people know she's vegan than a man might - and I give a specific example of being treated differently for being a female vegan! Keep an open mind with this one - even if you aren't vegan or even vegetarian, we talk about a lot of interesting things surrounding the patriarchy and constructs of masculinity, and I definitely learned a lot. One "Strong Bitch" with Rachel Watson

Episode in Pulling Roots
It’s the end of the semester, and there’s not a better way to send it off than to share this interview with my favorite professor that I’ve ever had. Her name is Rachel Watson, and I think you’ll see just how special she is when you hear her. The episode kicks of with a conversation between me and a new friend that I met in Rachel’s Microbiology class this semester, Hannah Julaine. We paint a picture of what Rachel’s class was like, and why we think she is a notable instructor. Then you’ll get to hear from Rachel herself. We talk about her life – growing up in Leadville Colorado, having an alcoholic Dad and being raised by her single mom (who I got to meet this week at our presentations for the class. She is such a wonderfully sweet woman!). She talks about diving into her studies and being a very successful student, and coming to terms with her identity as a queer woman, and how the scientific community is kind of a good old boy’s club. I wish we could’ve talked for hours, and maybe (hopefully) we will get to do a follow up episode to this one, because Rachel is one of the most interesting people I’ve talked to. I hope to be like Rachel one day and I’m so glad I got the chance to learn from her. Why Journalism Matters With Caroline Ballard

Episode in Pulling Roots
Thanks for tearing yourselves away from Lemonade long enough to listen to my podcast. I know how much that means. Today’s guest on the podcast is someone that my Wyoming listeners probably will recognize when they hear her voice: it’s Caroline Ballard, the Morning Edition host at Wyoming Public Radio and host of the podcast HumaNature. Caroline comes to Wyoming by way of New York City, where she received her BA in Global Liberal Studies from New York University and her Masters in Journalism from Columbia University. Her work has appeared on Marketplace, NPR, WFUV, and the Village Voice. Caroline is an avid world traveler and has lived in France, Portugal, New York, and Virginia, which she talks about in our conversation. On this episode, she gives great professional advice and talks about what it’s like being out of college and having everything up in the air in terms of her future. Caroline also talks about her passion for journalism and ethical reporting. One of my favorite things about her is her ability to ability to really "throw things to the wind” and have faith in her future. She talks about moving to Wyoming from New York having known nothing about the state – which is a pretty brave thing to do in my opinion. Young Female Leadership With Donatellia Austin

Episode in Pulling Roots
Today, you’ll hear from a very cool lady on campus named Donatellia Austin. Donatellia and I talk about campus politics when in comes to race, sexual orientation, gender expression, and sexual assault. Donatellia is an RA, and she talks about her experience with campus politics living in campus housing. She talks about the importance of student involvement in student government to make sure all voices are heard – especially marginalized groups like people of color, women and the LGBTQ community. She running for office in student government, and it was cool to talk to someone my age who is so motivated to make positive change in university politics. She’s running for ASUW vice president, so if you’re a student at UW and you want to vote for her, the polls will be online on collegiate link April 18 - 20. Two Catholics One Same Sex Couple With Abby And Alicia

Episode in Pulling Roots
Today on the podcast you’ll get to hear a really cool perspective. I met Abby at my job, and she and her girlfriend Alicia, who have been dating for almost two years sat down and talked to be about what it’s like being a same sex couple, specifically being women, in Wyoming. Going in to this conversation, I kind of assumed that most of the homophobia they would be putting up with was from old conservative hicks, but they told me that they got the most bullshit from men their age that don’t take their relationship seriously. They told me that they think gay men have it a lot harder in terms of the homophobia they experience. They also give relationship advice, and talk about what to do if you have curious feelings about your sexuality. They are both catholic and find that their sexuality and faith coexist well together. I had a lot of fun with this one, hope you like it!

PR 017 Whats It Like Being My Mom? With Suzie Armitage

Episode in Pulling Roots
This episode of the podcast features my mom, Suzie Armitage. My mom grew up in a tiny town of 500 people called Menan, Idaho. She grew up with six siblings and was active in the Mormon church in her town. She moved to Salt Lake City when she was 17, and got married to my dad when she was 27. We talk about everything in between, including whether or not she wanted kids, what her body image was like growing up, if she was intentional in the way she raised her kids, and some sexism that she's experienced in her life. I look up to my mom so much and I'm happy to share this conversation. PR 016 Do Feminists Hate Men? With Savannah Loyd

Episode in Pulling Roots
Savannah and I met when we were in fifth grade. I liked her Abercrombie sweatpants so I asked her if we could instant message on MSN messenger. We’ve been friends ever since. Savannah and I aren’t totally similar - Savannah is Christian, leans republican, eats meat, etcetera -We talk abortion, going to private Christian school, and we ponder the questions: Are feminists man haters? Are some feminists not striving for equality to men, but trying to gain superiority? Are some feminists asking for things to be handed to them instead of working for them? What’s causing the wage gap, and does it even exist? Do feminists ignore men’s issues? It was cool talking to someone who is discovering feminism and doesn’t agree with me on everything. PR 015 One Woman Media Company With Ann Friedman

Episode in Pulling Roots
Ann is a freelance journalist who writes about gender, media, technology, and culture. She has a weekly column at NYmag.com. You may have also read her work in The Los Angeles Times, The Gentlewoman, The New Republic, The New York Times Book Review, ELLE, The Guardian, and Los Angeles magazine or heard her on NPR. She also co hosts a podcast called Call Your Girlfriend with Aminatou Sow, and if you aren’t listening to it you really should be. I feel very lucky that Ann agreed to Skype in and talk to me. We talked about whether or not the Bernie vs Hilary memes are sexist, and we also talk about to what extent its okay to criticize another woman’s feminism in terms of Kanye West and Amber Rose. We discuss tone policing, and the gmail plug in “Just not sorry,” We talk about friend breakups, and how to maintain friendships as we grow older. We also talk about the struggle of wanting to be a writer, especially in terms of getting a job you’re proud of right out of college, and an experience she had getting fired alongside many of her colleagues. If you haven’t already, obviously check out her work and listen to her wonderful podcast. Ann is hilarious and intelligent and thoughtful, and I’m so glad I got to talk to her. Enjoy! PR 014 STEMinism With Dr. Shawna McBride

Episode in Pulling Roots
Don't forget you can still buy a shirt (donate what you want) and I'll throw in some stickers. Here's the link to donate: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=YCU2RY6GY55WE&lc=US&item_name=Pulling%20Roots%20Podcast&currency_code=USD&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF%3abtn_donateCC_LG%2egif%3aNonHosted I hoped with this conversation to provide representation for young women who may be having anxiety surrounding their major, around changing it, around what career they want to go into, or about being the only woman in your engineering classes. You’ll hear from this successful scientist that sometimes people wont take you seriously because of your gender. She might be the representation you needed to see to give you the confidence to get a STEM degree. She briefly mentions how her husband begun to be conscious of his internal biases when hiring people, and it was lovely to see a feminist lady have a positive influence on her partner. I’m lucky enough to have a partner who has taught me so much and helped me grow, and although it was only mentioned briefly in our conversation, having people in our lives who we can teach and learn from is exponentially important. This conversation is short and sweet, and I hope you enjoy.

Speak Like A Girl is made up of Olivia Gatwood and Megan Falley, two hilarious, intelligent, talented and lovely feminist ladies. I was blown away by their performance – find them on youtube to listen to their wonderful poems like their Ode to the Selfie. The two were secret fans of each other before they met, and when they both tried out and made it onto the Urbana Slam Team they became fast friends. PR 012 Being A Transgender Woman In Wyoming With Rihanna Kelver

Episode in Pulling Roots
Today’s guest is Rihanna Kelver. Being a transgender teen in Wyoming is a pretty unique perspective and I feel so honored that Rihanna wanted to share that with me. we talk about how she came out to her teachers, her partner, and her mom, what its like being in a polyamorous relationship, and what her first impression of trans people were before knowing anything about trans people, and what her experience is like being out in Wyoming. I can’t even tell you how overcome with emotion I was listening back to my conversation with her. It’s so easy to be angry, and frustrated, and upset when it comes to the way that the rights of transgender people in our country are walked all over, and the injustices and straight up prejudice that these people face on a daily basis, but Rihanna comes at it with so much grace, and patience, and kindness, and it just blows me away. I think that trans people have every right to be livid, and have no responsibility to be nice, or polite especially toward the people who throw bigotry in their faces, so to see Rihanna be so wonderfully empathetic and sweet is amazing to me. She says to those that don’t understand her gender identity, “As much as I try to walk in their shoes, I wish they would walk in mine.” In Laramie, currently there is a policy sitting in front of the School Board regarding Transgender and Gender non-conforming students. This policy seeks to help trans students within the district by giving them the resources and respect they need in order to survive through public school. This includes access to the restroom that aligns with their gender identity. The first board meeting specifically for public comment will be on January 20th at 7:00pm in the Administration Building on 1948 Grand Ave. If you can make it, your support of trans youth in Laramie would be greatly appreciated, and is so important.
