Well guys, it’s finally time. This episode of the Purple Stuff Podcast is more than ten years in the making. For the first time ever, it’s an entire show about the lean, green fighting machines. It’s time to talk TURTLES! Yes indeed, a whole show about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! And a huge one, at that. Purple Stuff: Unsolved Mysteries, Volume 4!

The latest Purple Stuff Podcast is here, and this episode is (Robert) stacked. Join us for our fourth trip into the wild world of UNSOLVED MYSTERIES! If you’re familiar with our prior episodes about the classic TV series, you know the drill. Me and Jay plucked six segments out from the show’s seventeen thousand seasons, this time covering everything from angels to aliens to… aphrodisiacs? Yes, really. These Unsolved Mysteries pods are absolute monsters to complete, but we always love to do ‘em. Whether you’re in the mood for something creepy, cheesy, or both at the same time, we’ve got you covered. Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which you can also find on Apple, Spotify, and wherever else you listen to podcasts. Thank the lawd that Unsolved Mysteries has fully embraced the streaming era, and is so easy to watch on so many platforms. I remember a time when there was a hot market for unofficial DVDs, which generally looked terrible, if they even played at all. We’ve come a long way, baby. The podcast is loaded with clips, but if you actually wanna see the segments we’re discussing, follow the links below! 1) The Belgian UFO! 2) Resurrection Mary! 3) The Minnesota Iceman! 4) Aphrodisiacs! 5) The Las Vegas Fraudster! 6) Do Angels Really Exist? Thanks so much for your ears, and for sharing the show around! We’re over ten years deep into doing this podcast, and we so appreciate your continued support! Oh, and as a reminder, the Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab an exclusive bonus show every month, plus gain immediate access to our immense back catalog of prior bonus shows. (We’ve done nearly 100 of them so far!) Our latest bonus is a deep dive into an old broadcast of Tales from the Darkside, complete with TV commercials from the ‘80s. If our 70-minute tribute to Unsolved Mysteries doesn’t freak you out enough, that one oughta do it. Enjoy, everyone! Perhaps you can solve a mystery.

Friday the 13th Part 2: 1986 TV Broadcast!

The latest episode of the Purple Stuff Podcast just dropped, and we think it’s a suitably cozy one for the dead of winter. (Emphasis on “dead.”) Join me and Jay from Sludge Central as we dive into a 1986 network television broadcast of Friday the 13th Part 2! Edited for time *and* content! Even without the gore and bad words, Part 2 remains my favorite film in the franchise. While it lacks the “party movie pizazz” of later installments, the more grounded approach really suits it. (I say “grounded” as if a severed head isn’t a major plot point in the movie, and arguably its third most important character.) We’re looking at a complete network broadcast from November of 1986, exactly as it aired on WFLD 32 out in Chicago. Complete with commercials, for those who prefer their Friday the 13th discussions with sidebars about Pizza Hut. Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which is also on Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you listen to podcasts. It was so great to see Friday the 13th Part 2 the way it was meant to be seen – with ads for Dimetapp and Wrigley’s Spearmint gum sandwiched between the killings. As a reminder, the Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab an exclusive bonus show every month, and get instant access to our immense library of past bonus episodes. There are around ninety of them in there, waiting for your ears! Oh, and here’s a video collecting the intro, commercials and bumpers from this 1986 broadcast of Friday the 13th Part 2. This gem of a find was donated by The Nostalgia Society over on IG, who correctly assumed that we’d wanna drop everything to cover it. Thanks, friend! Enjoy our first episode for 2026, everyone! Feel free to share thoughts about this wonderful rom-com in the comments. Did you like seeing Jason with long, stringy hair? Did the movie give you a better appreciation for antiquated handheld video games? The public (or maybe just me) wants to know!

Purple Stuff: 1987 Sears Wish Book!

The Purple Stuff Podcast’s big holiday show is here, and we’ve picked an appropriately festive topic for the occasion. Join us for a 75-minute romp through the pages of the legendary 1987 Sears Wish Book! You remember these catalogs, of course. In the ‘80s, they were as good as bibles. Featuring what felt like every single toy in the universe (and every single other thing in the universe), these retail tomes monopolized our attention every Christmas season, and gave us pleasant, greedy dreams all through December. 1987 was a particularly great year for the Wish Book, and we had a blast circling our favorite stuff for this yuletide podcast. We think you’re gonna dig it! Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which is also on Apple, Spotify, and wherever else you listen to pods! As a reminder, we’re also on Patreon, where you can grab an exclusive bonus show every month, AND gain immediate access to our enormous back catalog of nearly 100 prior bonus eps! (December’s is coming before Christmas!) Down below are scans of some of the 1987 Sears Wish Book items covered on this month’s show: I think Spectra is my new obsession, guys. Thanks so much for spending another year with the Purple Stuff Podcast, and we hope this latest episode adds a little something to your Christmas week! Happy holidays, all!

1985 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

The wait is over! With moments to spare before the stuffing hits the table, the Purple Stuff Podcast is ready to serve up this year’s review of an old Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! It’s our favorite annual tradition, and this year, we picked a hot one for ya. Join us for a long look back at the 1985 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, featuring He-Man, Rainbow Brite, the Cabbage Patch Kids, and whole lotta Bert Convy. While we covered this parade’s surrounding years on prior shows, this one was definitely distinct, and deserved its day in the sun. Rue McClanahan dressed like Cinderella? A deflated Kermit balloon? Pat Sajak nearly set on fire by a gaggle of torch jugglers? In 1985, there was something for everyone! Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which you can also find on Spotify, or Apple, or wherever else you listen to podcasts. Oh, and if you want to actually watch the 1985 Macy’s Parade, there are a few copies on YouTube. Here’s one that’s complete with commercials. In fact, below are links to let you jump directly to the segments discussed on the show! 1) The Cabbage Patch Kids! 2) Rainbow Brite Sings! 3) Masters of the Universe Float! 4) Toys “R” Us WWF Commercial! 5) Care Bears and Miss America! 6) Rue McClanahan as Cinderella! 7) Pat Sajak Dodges Fire! 8) Weird McDonald’s Commercial! We hope you enjoy the new ep, whether you get to hear it before Thanksgiving or not! As a reminder, the Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where we publish an exclusive bonus episode every month. Actually, this month’s bonus show ties directly to the 1985 Macy’s Parade! Dropping tomorrow, we’re going to be diving into several of the television commercials that aired during this parade, covering everything from She-Ra to the McDLT! (Yeah, we wanted to publish the bonus show at the same time as the main show, but life has a way of life’ing, and we didn’t want you to wait any longer for the annual parade review!) If you’re heading away for the holiday weekend, have a great time! Hopefully the new episode will give ya something to listen to while driving. If not, it’ll be here when you get back!

1992 TV Broadcast of Texas Chainsaw Part 2!

The latest episode of The Purple Stuff Podcast is here, and baby, we’re takin’ ya to Texas… Back in October of 1992, a FOX affiliate out of Boston decided to run The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 – a grisly, unrated movie with lots of blood and mayhem – right there on broadcast television, in prime time. What chutzpah!! Join me and Jay from Sludge Central for an hourlong examination of this ancient television event. We’ll tell you about the film (which we love), plus how this FOX affiliate handled airing such a gnarly movie, and we’ll even get into some of the commercials that played during the broadcast. (Including some that were Halloween-themed!) If you’ve seen the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre but never the sequel, boy, it’s a WAY different movie. Loud and over-the-top as a rule. It must be seen to be believed, but this episode is the next best thing. Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which you can also find on Apple, Spotify, and wherever else you listen to podcasts. As a reminder, The Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where we drop an exclusive bonus show every month. When you join, you instantly gain access to our entire back catalog, which goes back years. There are over 80 exclusive episodes waiting for you over there! Oh, and here’s a little video we put together showing the film’s awesomely ominous television intro, plus all of the commercials we discuss on the show. Enjoy! The Purple Stuff Podcast isn’t done Halloweening, so when you’re through listening to this one, it won’t be long before we’re attacking you with chainsaws again. Stay tuned, stay vigilant.

The Purple Stuff Podcast is back, and we’ve brought the big man with us. Fred Krueger, Mom, FRED KRUEGER. We’re also diving into many of the TV commercials that aired during this broadcast, covering everything from Pizza Hut to Sesame Street dolls! The latest Purple Stuff Podcast is here, and it’s soft and squishy. Join us as we embark on a magical adventure through the world of STUFFED TOYS from the ‘80s and ‘90s! Yep, me and Jay from Sludge Central are tackling dolls, plushies and Pillow People, in an hour-long tribute to some of the best, weirdest, and softest toys from yesteryear. Think you can guess our picks? Maybe not! Since we already covered so many classic dolls and plushies on prior shows, we had to pull out some seriously deep cuts for this one. Don’t worry, though — there are still some classics in the mix, like Playskool’s Glo Worm and Talking Baby Sinclair! Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which you can also find on Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you listen to podcasts. Purple Stuff: 1987 Christmas TV Specials!

Just in the (saint) nick of time, the latest Purple Stuff Podcast is here! Let us be your soundtrack as you wrap gifts, bake cookies, and practice your “hoarse voice” so you can fake a flu to get out of the holiday party. It’s a ho ho hot one this month, guys. Me and Jay from Sludge Central are diving into the back-to-back broadcasts of A Charlie Brown Christmas and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, exactly as they aired on CBS on December 11th, 1987! We’re discussing both specials, obviously, but the bulk of the show goes to several of the awesome television commercials that aired during them. Everything from Quackers to that old 7UP commercial with the creepy elves! Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which you can also find on Spotify, Apple, or wherever else you listen to podcasts. As a reminder, the Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab an exclusive bonus show every month. December’s is already live, and it’s about a Kay-Bee Toys holiday catalog from 1989! Bonus points: We put together this YouTube video featuring ALL of the commercials that aired on that chilly December night. 1987 might have been the most outstanding year of my lifetime as far as Christmas specials went. There were soooo many on television that year, including major debuts like A Garfield Christmas and A Muppet Family Christmas. Still, Snoopy was always the top dog, so this podcast is about the biggest television event of that whole season! Thanks so much for listening, and for sharing the show around! We’re coming up on TEN YEARS of the Purple Stuff Podcast, and the best is yet to come. Happy holidays to all of our wonderful listeners! PS: If this is your first visit to the site in a while, I’d like to direct you to Dino Drac’s 25 Days of Christmas – a multi-page blog event that will be completed on Christmas morning. Lots to read and look at!

1984 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

Well, it’s finally time for The Purple Stuff Podcast’s annual review of an old Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! And we’ve picked a truly stellar example. Let’s head back to 1984! Yes, it’s the 58th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which aired live on November 22nd, 1984. This year marks that parade’s 40th anniversary, so it was only fitting that we’d spend an hour going completely berserk about it. This is the oldest parade we’ve covered on the show, and it was a reminder of how much looser the event used to be. They run a tight ship nowadays, but back then, things could get a little wonky – but usually in a good way! Join me and Jay from Sludge Central as we marvel at everything and everyone from Scooby-Doo to the Care Bears to evil space alien lizard people. Even John Ratzenberger makes the cut! Click here to listen to this month’s show! ….which you can also find on Apple, Spotify, and wherever else you listen to podcasts. It’s honestly one of the most jam-packed Macy’s Parades I’ve seen. Even with this jumbo-sized episode, we barely scratched the surface! If you want to see the whole thing, it’s on YouTube in all of its grainy 480p glory. (Well, maybe more like 360p, but it’ll get the job done.) PS: For those who subscribe to our Patreon, we’re going to be dropping a special bonus episode where we gush about a bunch of the TV commercials that aired during this broadcast. Look for it tomorrow! Thanks so much to everyone who listens to the show, and especially to those who share it around! This is our seventh annual Macy’s Parade review, and it’s one of our favorite podcast traditions. Here’s to many more! Have a great Thanksgiving, everyone!

Fright Night 1987 TV Broadcast!

The latest Purple Stuff Podcast is here, and this one could only be served in the cold, black heart of the Halloween season. (Well, I guess we could’ve released it in April or May, but it sure wouldn’t hit the same.) Join us as we march through the October 1987 network television premiere of FRIGHT NIGHT, as aired on a Fox affiliate in Wisconsin, complete with cheesy bumpers and oh-so-’80s TV commercials. This ran just a few days before Halloween that year, and what a perfect flick for the season. Jay came at this with the perspective of a longtime fan, but I’m a shameful Fright Night newbie… and I fell in love with this wonderful movie. Chris Sarandon as a shark-toothed vampire who’s obsessed with Marcy D’Arcy? God, yes! We’re gonna walk you through our favorite moments, talk about Fright Night trivia, and even dip into some of those vintage TV commercials. It’s almost as good as watching the whole broadcast in 1987! Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which you can also find on Spotify, or Apple, or wherever else you listen to podcasts. As a reminder, The Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can get access to our huge catalog of monthly bonus episodes. October’s is coming up soon, and it’s very Halloweeny! Thanks to all who support us over there! PS: While we can’t show you the movie, we did put together this montage including the intro, bumpers, and some of the glorious TV commercials. (H/T to SpookySkunk for this!) Thanks so much for listening, and for sharing the show around! We hope this episode adds a little something to your Halloween season. Pair it with apple cider and a pumpkin donut, and you’re set!

Purple Stuff: Spooky Songs, Volume XI!

The wait is over! It’s time for one of The Purple Stuff Podcast’s most important annual traditions, where we give your Halloween playlists a boost with song suggestions that you probably never considered before. Yes indeed, it’s time for SPOOKY SONGS, VOLUME ELEVEN! Me and Jay from Sludge Central have been at this for around a decade now, and it’s still one of our favorite shows to do. This deep into the series, it’s more challenging than ever to find killer songs that we haven’t already covered – so we had to turn over a lot of rocks to dig out the good stuff. I think we succeeded! Join us as we celebrate another ten terrifying tracks that would be perfect for your Halloween playlist. Featured artists include Jon Mikl Thor, the Crypt Keeper, and The Chipmunks! Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which you can also find on Apple, Spotify, and wherever else you listen to podcasts. As a reminder, The Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab an exclusive bonus episode, every month. (We just dropped the latest one, where we name some of the hottest Halloween food promotions coming our way this October.) Thanks so much for listening, and for sharing the show around! This latest episode actually counts as September’s – we had to push it off, because I’ve been sick. But that means you’ve still got more Halloween action coming from The Purple Stuff Podcast this month, so stay tuned! Happy October!

Purple Stuff: Blockbuster Video in 1994!

The bold blues, the stench of popcorn, and the telltale hum of fluorescent lighting. Are you ready to take a trip back to you-know-where? In the latest Purple Stuff Podcast, we’re using our time-bending powers to visit Blockbuster Video in 1994! No, really, that’s what this episode is about. Join me and Jay from Sludge Central as we ride our bikes to VHS heaven, argue over what to rent, do some people-watching, and relive the entire experience of the Blockbuster Video chain from its mid ‘90s heyday. While people like us obviously preferred the mom-and-pop video stores from earlier in our youth – and often criticize Blockbuster for doing them so dirty – the chain was still a huge part of our collective childhood, and we spent many, many, many nights stomping around its thin carpets, looking for our weekend entertainment. It was fun as hell to do it again! Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which is also on Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you listen to podcasts. As a reminder, the Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab exclusive bonus shows each and every month. We’re entering the spooky season now, so if Halloween is your thing, there’s no better time to join. (And yes, when you do, you get immediate access to our back catalog of over sixty bonus episodes!) We hope y’all dig our virtual trip to Blockbuster Video in 1994. Thanks so much for listening, and for sharing the show around! If you have any specific memories of the chain – even if they’re just about the giant gumball machines – feel free to share ‘em in the comments section.

Purple Stuff Podcast: The Bowling Show!

For this month’s Purple Stuff Podcast, we’re visiting a mystical, magical bowling alley that’s trapped in the early ‘90s. You will never find a more wretched hive of fun and gluttony. Those alleys were ground zero for some of our favorite childhood memories. These bizarre, cold caverns filled with fries, arcade games, weird shoes and neon lights. For a few hours, it was like traveling to another planet. In this episode, me and Jay from Sludge Central revisit every nook and cranny of an early ‘90s bowling alley, right down to the shoe rack and the vending machines. Major nostalgia points, plus a whole lot of synth tracks. Join us! Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which you can also find on Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you listen to podcasts. Purple Stuff: The Soda Show, Part II!

Almost four years later, and we’re finally ready to drop the sequel to one of the most popular Purple Stuff Podcast episodes ever. Get set for another eight great sodas… it’s THE SODA SHOW: PART II! Me and Jay from Sludge Central didn’t hear of water until we were in our twenties. We grew up on fizzy drinks, and we’re very excited to share another batch of our favorites with you, from the ‘80s, ‘90s and early 2000s. There are some real deep cuts in the mix, from Life Savers Soda to Not Quite Crystal Pepsi! Click here to listen to this month’s show! …which you can also find on Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you listen to podcasts. The Purple Stuff Podcast is also on Patreon, where you can grab an additional bonus episode each and every month. When you join, you also get immediate access to our back catalog of over *sixty* bonus shows! If you’d like to learn more about the beverages featured on the latest Soda Show, follow the links below. If you’d prefer to avoid spoilers, stop reading here! 1) Life Savers Soda! 2) The Pepsi Wild Bunch! 3) The Original New York Seltzer! 4) Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash! 5) Crystal From The Makers of Pepsi! 6) Shasta’s Super Mario Sodas! 7) Storm, from Pepsi! 8) Clearly Canadian! You’ll notice that a couple of those only barely qualify as sodas. It’s amazing what you can get away with without an oversight committee. We hope you dig the new episode, and that it makes you really, really thirsty. Thanks as always for your time and ears, and for sharing the show around. Cheers! PS: If you wanna dive back into the original Soda Show, it’s over here!
