We continue our discussion of Amanda Knox’ upcoming retrial in Italy for slander against her former boss, Le Chic Bar owner Patrick Lumumba. When the police interrogated Amanda they told her to sign two police written statements, just hours apart. Amanda has always maintained she was not allowed an interpreter or to speak to a lawyer during that interrogation and that she was pressured to place Patrick Lumumba at the scene of the crime. There was a third statement Amanda wrote on her own, shortly after signing the previous two police-written statements, trying to explain her state of mind and her knowledge of the facts of the night Meredith was murdered. In this episode you will hear Amanda reading this third statement and Jim & Laura’s illuminating analyses of it. Amanda Knox is headed back to stand trial again in Italy. But this time not for the murder of her former college roommate Meredith Kercher, who she was wrongfully convicted of killing in 2009 and later acquitted in 2015. Now, Knox is facing a re-trial for slander against Patrick Lumumba, a local bar owner in Perugia who she worked for at the time of the murder. Italian police say Knox named him as the prime suspect back when she was in police custody in 2007. Knox has always claimed it was the police themselves who mentioned Lumumba as involved in the murder and it was they who deliberately misinterpreted her text messages with him. In 2007, British college student Meredith Kercher was raped and brutally murdered (stabbed 47 times) by Rudy Guede in Perugia, Italy where she was studying on an exchange program. Though this case made international headlines, very few people recognize the name of the victim and even fewer know the name of her killer. Rudy Guede who received a shockingly reduced sentence for this horrific crime, was allowed lenient furloughs during his incarceration, and was paroled three years ago after only serving thirteen years.  Recently there are new allegations of rape and assault against him made by his 23 year old girlfriend. While the case is under investigation, Guede is fettered only by a restraining order and not under house arrest nor any other monitoring despite his violent history. Why has he time after time been given so many indulgences? While many may not recall Meredith Kercher’s name nor Rudy Guede’s there is one name everyone recognizes for all the wrong reasons in connection with this case and that name is Amanda Knox.  Amanda, who happened to be one of Meredith’s roommates at the time of her death, was wrongfully convicted of her killing. Though eventually exonerated after serving four years in an Italian prison, the white hot spotlight of attention both from the Italian police, the media and the public have followed Amanda since her release. We continue our discussion of Meredith Kercher's rape & murder by Rudy Guede, his recent parole and subsequent new allegations of rape and assault against him by an ex partner.  Laura and Jim zero in on the errors, omissions and outright fabrications by Italian authorities who handled Meredith's case so badly, allowing Guede to get a fast-tracked trial and a reduced sentence (from 30 years to 16 years which was further whittled down to 13 years for good behavior). Laura gives us an update on the murder of Gabby Petito. Gabby was killed in August 2022 while camping in Wyoming by her then boyfriend Brian Laundrie who took countermeasures to try to fool Gabby's parents back in New York into believing she was still alive. We now know Laundrie may have involved his parents shortly after murdering Gabby into helping him perpetuate this lie. Reeva Steenkamp, a 29 year old South African paralegal who graduated top of her class and also had a successful career as a model, was murdered in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013, shot multiple times by her then partner Oscar Pistorius. Pistorius, who at the time was an internationally known professional sprinter and national hero, claimed it was an accident, that he thought he had been defending himself against an intruder breaking into his home. Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide with a term of only five years in prison and a concurrent three-year suspended prison sentence for a separate reckless endangerment conviction. That verdict was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa who convicted him of murder and increased Pistorius' prison term to 13 years and five months on appeal by the state. Now, to the shock and dismay of Reeva's family and loved ones, after only serving half of his sentence, Oscar Pistorius is going to be released on parole with a number of conditions. Doug Kennedy and Tom Krumins are two former Boy Scouts who were sexually abused and assaulted while under the watch of the Boy Scouts of America. Today Doug and Tom share their painful stories and explain the context of how these crimes were hidden for so long by those in charge. After decades of ignoring thousands of child sexual abuse reports going on under their watch, the Boy Scouts of American finally had a reckoning in 2010 when a brave former scout came forward to file a lawsuit and testify. Kerry Lewis was only 11 years old when he was repeatedly sexually abused by an assistant scoutmaster named Timur Dykes. Even though Dykes had previously confessed to his superior, another scouting leader, to sexually abusing 17 boys in their troup, Dykes was allowed to continue with the organization and continue to abuse Kerry as well as others. Police were able to zero in on Miranda, bring him into a line up where Trisha identified him and shortly thereafter he wrote a full confession to the crime without the presence of an attorney. Miranda was convicted, but later his verdict was overturned by the Supreme Court who found that his rights as had been violated. A quick bonus episode to discuss the recent abduction in upstate New York of a 9 year old girl who thankfully was found 48 hours after she went missing. “Making A Murderer” the Netflix documentary about the 2005 murder of 25 year old Teresa Halbach near Green Bay, Wisconsin and the prime suspect in her killing Steven Avery took the world by storm in 2015 launching many viewer theories and passionate camps as to what may have really happened to the young photographer and who was responsible for her horrific murder. Avery, who had been wrongfully convicted of a violent sexual assault in 1985 was exonerated when DNA evidence proved another man was the true offender, and released in 2003 after serving 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Just two years later, Steven Avery would again be the focus of an investigation, this time for Teresa's murder. The filmmakers of “Making A Murderer” Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos (who funded the docuseries themselves long before Netflix agreed to distribute it) have always said their premise was to follow Avery's murder trial as it unfolded for their cameras based on who they had access to. They have always said they were not there to investigate the crime nor to take a side, but to document the process of the justice system as it happened in front of them. But Ricciardi and Demos came under intense criticism by those who thought they left out the most important details of the case. Now a new docu-series “Convicting A Murder” streaming on The Daily Wire website seeks to re-open the case file and show viewers what was missing.
