Mia Baumgartner, Manager of Spiritual Care & Wellbeing, and the Joy in the Workplace Project at University of Washington Medical Center speaks with Spehar-Halligan Professor and CEIE Director, Michael Trice, about the book - Compassionomics: The Revolutionary Scientific Evidence That Caring Makes a Difference by Stephen Trzeciak and Anthony Mazzarelli. Mia and Michael discuss compassion as more than empathy. Compassion is an art form, a practice, and leads to a longer and healthier life. It also helps with depression, anxiety and isolation. Dr. Amir Hussain is Chair and Professor of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he teaches courses on religion. His own particular speciality is the study of Islam, focusing on contemporary Muslim societies in North America. He is also the President of the American Academy of Religion, and this brings us to the conversation today: This year, a state college, New College in Sarasota, Florida came under the microscope of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has an eye on becoming the next president of the United States, and who has a plan to transform New College, which is known as progressive and describes itself as “a community of free thinkers.” On Jan. 31, New College’s president Patricia Okker was ousted, and Gov. DeSantis unveiled his higher education policies — to further weaken faculty tenure protections, eliminate diversity and equity programs and mandate Western civilization courses, according to the New York Times. In response, on February 9th the reputable American Council of Learned Societies released a statement that, to our mind, drew a line in the sand, noting New College as another glaring example of an attack on the principles of academic freedom and faculty governance. The claim by Florida administration of “indoctrination” and the changes to come at New College at the hands of the state, invite a conversation about the role of the university, and the shared responsibility to protect critical thinking, freedom of speech and informed debate. Steen Halling, PhD, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology at Seattle University, brings over four decades of study on the psychology of forgiveness. In this podcast, Center Director Michael Reid Trice PhD asks Dr. Halling about his timely book, titled: The Lived Experience of Forgiveness: Phenomenological and Psychological Perspectives. Dr. Audrey Hudgins, Associate Clinical Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at Seattle University, spoke with CEIE Director Dr. Michael Reid Trice about her current project with the Jesuit Universidad Iberoamericana Puebla regarding the labor movement. After her retirement from the US Army as a strategic intelligence officer, Dr. Hudgins began a second career teaching for the Matteo Ricci Institute, the Dept. of Political Science, and the International Studies Program. Her teaching interests include migration, leadership, and national security. Migration is a complex issue and it's one that is a natural process that has been around since the beginning of time. The challenge is with the development of the conception of national sovereignty.
