Mobile install series
Getting power to your radio
Wire gauge
Solid core cable verses Stranded
16 gauge to 10 gauge
I’m running 6 to 7 feed
12 to 13 amps
Using 12 gauge in this install
all conductors have resistance
larger gauge less resistance
Voltage drop
under sized conductor can cause signal noise
Motor boat
low power supply can damage radio
use cigarette lighter fro temp install only
12 to 15 volts from the alternator
Run the cable
When possible hook up to the battery
Use the cable retainers in the engine compartment
Use wire ties, Velcro straps, even bread ties
innovate
Keep the wire off of the engine and other hotspots
Passenger compartment
Look for feed throughs in the firewall
Make sure you seal around grommets
If you have to drill try to use grommets
Look for other access points
Beef up bends around corners
Richard’s Story Time
Most Power Cables are now standardized
Find ways to make the best connections possible
Remember connector create resistance
make sure you have fuses in line so you don’t kill your radio
Make sure you have a plan
Watch for capillary effect on stranded wire and coax (Seal It)
inspect power leads often, the fluids used in car engines and other systems will cause wire insulation to degrade
More music

Studying to the Test
Don’t learn it memorize it
Not a new approach
Been that way since I was licensed
Novice was pretty easy
Been messin with electronics since I was a kid
Radios, Electronics, computers. Oh, my.
I knew a little about propagation
We used to take the test, get our license and learn from there
With the codeless license we feel down on Elmering
“I need another antenna because the one I have doesn’t have enough SWR?”
We couldn’t keep up because of the influx of new operators
It would be neat to be a ham
First time renewal comes along their gone
Don’t hide. Elmer
The folks that complain about the new guys. Came in the same way.
This hobby is about Elmering
Moaning about the good old days of amateur radio
We are having a hard time competing with Cell Phones
Nothing wrong with studying to the test, if you don’t stop there
We got rid of the code, what now?
The people that said they would never use Morse code are all down on HF doing code
Thank you Tyler amateur radio club
Elmer, Elmer, Elmer
These guys are not Lids
They just need some Elmering

Twaddle
Hamspeak / Jargon
Richard’s Story time
Visitor from the Planet of Jar-Gon
Lowell K9LDW interpreter
Amateur Radio Operators have Jargon
The new guys don’t understand explain in plain English
“Jargon” from middle English means Gibberish
The new operators need time to acclimate
Richard’s Story time
I’m the guy that learn it for myself
everybody else are not that way
They need help
Richard’s Story time
when you brick a radio
CPS?
Ham Speak?
Learning to the test was good when the Elmers weren’t hiding
Learn the info
Richard’s Story time
If you don’t understand ask for clarification
Ham’s love to talk
You are not Stupid
Learn the material when studying for the test
The operators that are always negative with you don’t want them to help you
Richard’s Story time
Don’t Be afraid
“The only stupid question is the one that is never asked” it kind of defeats the purpose
Boy he sure is full of himself
The old ways are not working
As Elmers we need to find a new way to help the new operators.

Linux makes sense
It is not hard to work with
Has more than one Great Desktop
Different flavors of Linux are called Distributions
The current focus is to make it more desktop friendly
Why
You don’t always want to have your ham stuff on your everyday equipment
Makes older computers run great
Can be run from a thumb drive
Live CD’s
Freedom
Free as in money
Open source
The other free
Modify it if you want
Make it yours

W2CEW working on Winlink
Solar Cycle
Sunspots
Solar Cycle runs about 11 years
more sunspots at the peak of the cycle
The sun is more active when the solar cycle is up
more radiation to creates charged particles in the ionosphere
denser ionosphere means more refraction
Richard’s Story Time
When it’s up it’s great
Higher ionization helps radio waves propagate more efficiently
MUF Maximum Usable Frequency
Solar Flares and Coronal Holes are bad
Protons are charge killers
Easy on the Jargon with the new guys
Geomagnetic Storm bad too!
It can even charge the D Layer and disrupt Lower HF Frequencies
New Hams are getting frustrated
You can’t fight the sun
Make sure your station is ready for when the cycle comes back
We are currently at Solar minimum
Next Sunspot peak will max around 2023 -2026
Usable propagation before them
Florida and California, Damn!
Use WWV, International Broadcast, to get your receive up to snuff
Don’t forget the dummy load

Thinking about doing a separate show for Digital Voice we’ll keep you posted
Main topic Propagation 4
Sporadic E Propagation
6 meters is like HF and VHF
Heavily ionized patches of the E Layer
Several hundred miles to several thousand miles
Refraction off the Ionized layer
It is sporadic
I know a guy using WSPR to track sporadic E
Tropospheric Ducting
Ocean of air
The atmosphere is kind of acts like a fluid
Weather can cause refraction of radio waves
Look up temperature inversions
They can create a “duct”
hundreds of miles to thousands of miles
Richards Story Time
Trans-equatorial propagation
Stations equidistant on opposite sides of the equator
Works better for lower latitudes
Meteor Scatter
Best during meteor showers
Persiads
Lionids
Meteors leave a dense trail of ionization as the burn up in the atmosphere
Go out and read up on this stuff
Preach the good news of Amateur radio
Spend time with you family
We’ll see you next time

The people that are pushed off to the side are the ones that are important
No reason under the sun to refer to your Fellow Ham’s as Riff Raff
Shut her down
Thanks to Brad Sucks for our closing music

Episode 41 Awesome Feedback Show Notes
00:00 LHS Promo
00:34 Theme
01:27 Intro Back in the studio this time.
The Resonant Frequency website has been moved and blacksparrowmedia.com is no more. The new web site is rfpodcast.info. Linux in the Ham Shack is at lhspodcast.info. To contact Richard, use kb5jbv@gmail.com.
03:00 Donations The two podcasts are now financially separated, so please consider making a donation to the Resonant Frequency podcast to show your support.
04:46 Feedback
Craig, KD8NJZ, posted a comment at the forums on the old site. He enjoys the podcast as well as The Practical Amateur Radio Podcast and Teen Radio Journey.
Ray, KO4RB, also posted a comment on the web site to welcome Resonant Frequency back “on the air”.
BB, KC5PIY, writes to ask for help finding episodes 1-11 and 33. BB is the webmaster for Intertie, Inc., http://www.intertie.org, “a private amateur radio 501(c)(3) organization whose members have constructed and operate 23 remotely controlled base stations, (Remote Base), interconnected through full duplex links.
These linked systems cover a large part of Texas and are an integral part of the larger Cactus Intertie System consisting of over 150 Remote Base sites and 20 affiliate clubs.” There is some sort of problem with the feed to iTunes. We’re working on it, but if you have any experiance with RSS feeds and Drupal, please contact Richard. If you’re looking for old episodes, they are all available at rfpodcast.info under the “Podcast Archive” button near the top of the page.
WW, KB9TMP, also writes to welcome back Resonant Frequency. He agrees that most of the repeaters in his area go quiet after about 6:00pm. The only busy repeater is a linked repeater www.w9win.org, and even it is not that busy. He has a simplex EchoLink node 7492, KB9TMP-L.
David, N5DBK, writes to express his appreciation for the return of Resonant Frequency, and shares his thoughts about the 2-meter “wasteland” Richard talked about in Episode 41.
22:31 Song
“Do You Mean It” by Magic Slim and the Teardrops, from the album “Raising The Bar”.
25:57 If you’re involved in the Section Manager election for the ARRL North Texas section, please contact Richard.
27:24 Feedback
Gary, WR1U, also writes in about the lack of traffic on his local repeaters, and even simplex is quiet. Gary has started a Facebook www.facebook.com continued group for blind amateur radio operators. If you’re on Facebook, look for it.
Richard notes that part of the reason simplex VHF traffic has fallen off is due to uncoordinated repeaters, some D-Star, that have cropped up on the simplex portion of the band.
Ray, KO4RB, writes again to welcome Resonant Frequency back.
BB, KC5PIY, also signed up as a listener on the web site and had some problems with the process. If you’re have trouble signing up, please contact Richard for assistance.
Chris, NW5W, writes to say he is having problems subscribing to the podcast through iTunes.
Ted welcomes RF back and usually agrees with Richard’s opinions.
38:22 Song
“Shame” by Magic Slim and the Teardrops, from the album “Raising The Bar”.
42:16 Topic
More thoughts about the VHF/UHF wasteland.
Remember that we lost part of the 220MHz band partly because it was under-utilized by hams. So, get out there and use the repeaters!
Resonant Frequency has taken on an advertiser to help defray costs. Look for a show about 2010 Field Day coming soon. If you’re in the North Texas ARRL Section, contact Richard to discuss the current situation. You may hear Richard on D-Star, VHF or HF. Give him a call! And send us you feedback. Without your participation and feedback we don’t have a show.
