Cyanosed Newborn

Presenter: Professor Shakeel Qureshi, Consultant paediatric cardiologist at The Evelina Hospital Professor Qureshi reviews how to differentiate between cardiac and respiratory causes for the cyanosed newborn. A cardiac cause is most likely if the baby is term with minimal respiratory distress. A respiratory cause is more common in the preterm baby with signs of respiratory distress with associated CXR changes. Professor Qureshi discusses the pathophysiology of two major groups of cyanotic defects: 1) Tetralogy of Fallot and 2) common mixing defects (such as trucus arteriosus TAPVD, double inlet left ventricle, tricuspid atresia, pulmonary atresia and transposition of the great arteries).
