Rock Out With Your Cart Out
Twice a month, I find the games that came out that half of the month in five year increments and pick out music from those games for a really long episode. For this episode, we’re looking at the games that came out in the second half of August 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017.
These episodes are normally exclusive to Patreon backers who subscribe to the $3 a month and above tiers. This episode is a little over four hours! Subscribing gets you access to all the previous episodes as well! Head over to my Patreon and kick in that $3 a month to listen to the rest of them! Want to hear what a few others before you commit? ROWYCODE 12, which was the first one I did in this format, and ROWYCODE 25 are also free to listen to!

Rock Out With Your Cart Out 97 – Masters of VGM (Motoi Sakuraba, Yasunori Mitsuda, Takahiro Unisuga, and...
Episode in
Rock Out With Your Cart Out
I’m coming in just under the wire to get in on the fun of the Masters of VGM topic going around the video game music podcast community, but I made it! I hemmed and hawed over these picks quite a bit, and this list could have turned out differently depending on the day. That said, I’m happy with my picks as I think they not only deserve to be called masters of their craft, but are also very representative of my musical interests and the general vibe of this podcast. So sit back and enjoy listening to a curated list of music from Motoi Sakuraba, Yasunori Mitsuda, Takahiro Unisuga, and Jane-Evelyn Nisperos.

Rock Out With Your Cart Out 96 – Fight Back
Episode in
Rock Out With Your Cart Out
Some real bad stuff happened yesterday. I don’t have a lot to say here, but hopefully this compilation I put together helps keep you fired up to do what needs to be done to get things back to at least where they were. I go over my feelings about the whole thing at the end, so just a fair warning on that.

Rock Out With Your Cart Out
It’s no Illumination Laser, but we’re going with another soundtrack to a not particularly well known vertical scrolling shooter. This time, it’s Airgrave for the PS1! Hey, at least this game came out when the PS1 was a viable platform. The X68000 was more or less long dead by the time Illumination Laser came out.

Rock Out With Your Cart Out
I’m joined by my friend and Patreon backer, Michael Hughes, to talk about his picks for the 30 Day Video Game Music Challenge that was floating around Twitter in late 2020.
If you dug the idea of this sort of thing, Michael came up with his own version as well. Jump on the bandwagon and pick your own music for it. Who knows, maybe there will be another episode for this challenge as well?

I’m not going to sit here and try to explain or justify why I picked this one. Just listen to the episode and you’ll understand. It’s a rather great example of what I think of when thinking about music that sort of personifies the PS2 in my mind. Rock? Jazz fusion? A little prog rock? Hell yeah.

Rock Out With Your Cart Out 91 – Cotton Rock ‘n’ Roll (Cotton Fantasy)
Episode in
Rock Out With Your Cart Out
Sometimes there’s no real rhyme or reason for the games I pick for this show. I’ve never played a game in the long running, cute-’em-up franchise, Cotton. Hell, I’ve never listened to any of the music from them either. But I stumbled on the soundtrack to Cotton Rock ‘n’ Roll (changed to Cotton Fantasy for releases outside of Japan) a couple of weeks ago, I knew I had to cover it.

Rock Out With Your Cart Out 90 – Here You Go, You Little Shits. You Ruined Your Birthday.
Episode in
Rock Out With Your Cart Out
As I’ve done for the past two years (episodes 38 and 54), this one is a tribute to my grandma who passed away February 9, 2019. It’s more for me than anything else. My grandma is probably the only reason this site and podcast exists as she was always indulging me in whatever I was into to the best of her ability. Her house was always a place I felt safe in a time of my life that wasn’t always that. And being there every weekend meant tons of time to play video games and attaching memories to them that are nearly as clear in my mind today as they were more than 30 years ago.
As I said, this is probably more for to help me cope than anything, so if this episode isn’t your thing. no worries. There’s a huge back catalog to check out, so please feel free. Otherwise, well, you get to hear your sappy host reminisce about one of his favorite people.

Rock Out With Your Cart Out 88 – Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (Part One)
Episode in
Rock Out With Your Cart Out
After spending a good chunk of time playing Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, I came to realize I actually like the remake of the fourth generation. Not only the gameplay improvements, but the music as well. No longer held back by the DS hardware, it was nice to hear some of the music from Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum as it may have been intended. Plus, I’m always a sucker for Pokémon music being orchestrated. So, over the next two episodes, I’ll be going over some of my favorites from the remakes!

Rock Out With Your Cart Out 87 – Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (Famicom Disk System, NES, and Remixes)
Episode in
Rock Out With Your Cart Out
Another year, another Zelda game hitting a major milestone. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link released this day 35 years ago! While the game itself was a large departure from the original, Akito Nakatsuka’s work on the Zelda II’s soundtrack might have some of the more memorable and catchy tunes in the whole series.
While this is far from my favorite Zelda game, I thought I’d highlight some of my favorite remixes from it. Again, we’re digging into files that I’ve transitioned from multiple different computers and hard drives over the years. Hell, some of these remixes are nearing 20 years old on their own!

Well, it’s that time of year again. I’ve got another batch of winter-y themed pieces for you to listen to. Rock Out With Your Cart Out 84 – The Music of Harvest (scythe and Kabayama)
Episode in
Rock Out With Your Cart Out
Since this is a video game and video game adjacent music podcast, I thought I’d delve into a couple of chiptune artists I’ve grown pretty fond of in the last year and a half. With their second album, Time Goes On, Harvest (comprised of scythe and Kabayama) has shown they definitely work well together to make some really great music. I’ll be featuring some of my favorites from these two albums, as well as a few from each of their own individual albums.
You can check out Kabayama’s Bandcamp page and find their music, as well as both of Harvest’s albums. Scythe has his own Bandcamp page with a more than a few albums as well!

Rock Out With Your Cart Out 83 – The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Remixes)
Episode in
Rock Out With Your Cart Out
Following up on episode 82, here are some of my favorite remixes from A Link to the Past. Some of these, much like the remixes on the ROWYCO on The Legend of Zelda, I’ve had kicking around on various hard drives and devices over the last 20 years. Others are more recent remixes, or, at least recent to me as I’d only found them recently. Enjoy!

Rock Out With Your Cart Out 82 – The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
Episode in
Rock Out With Your Cart Out
We go from one important game celebrating a big anniversary to another. This time, it’s The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past turning 30 years old. We’ll be listening to the soundtrack for the game by itself since there’s a lot more to it than there was for the original The Legend of Zelda. Instead of putting my favorite remixes into this episode, there’ll be another episode later this week where I’ve compiled a bunch of my favorite remixes for it.

Rock Out With Your Cart Out 81 – Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
Episode in
Rock Out With Your Cart Out
It’s a little surreal to say this, but Halo: Combat Evolved turns 20 years old today. Not only is the original Halo one of the most important releases to ever come out, but, on a more personal note, it’s really the only first-person shooter with a soundtrack that’s ever stuck with me. So, to celebrate this momentous release, we’re going to listen to my favorite music from Halo: Combat Evolved!
