RYS 137: Love Listens to Understand
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
Have you ever seen a UFO? Or been visited by little gray, not green, aliens? I have. Which taught me there are millions of us with millions of different experiences. We cannot all have the same experiences. That’s why it’s so important we listen to one another to understand rather than simply dismiss each other because we have not personally experienced the same.
You can imagine how surreal and strange it must be to grow up with a secret you are not able to share with anyone for fear of being labeled crazy.
Finding others who share the same experience is comforting because you can’t be crazy when someone, anyone, steps up and says, “Hey, that also happened to me.”
Each experience you and I have in life is a unique opportunity to grow our sympathy, empathy, and compassion for others.

RYS 136: Let’s Take the Perfection Pressure Off
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
Practice Makes us Proficient! Which Takes the Perfection Pressure Off.
Do you like lasagna? I do, very much. Honestly and with all modesty I can say my lasagna is to die for. I don’t mean my lasagna will literally kill you. Heavens NO! The expression “it’s to die for” means something is fantastic, incredible, magnificent, and in the case of food over the top delicious. And my lasagna should be first-rate, an award-winning stack of deliciousness because I’ve spent the past 45 years mastering the recipe.
We don’t get good at anything – cooking, relationships, a job, patience – without practice.
If we want to be really good at something we must get really good at practicing that something.
Practice will make us proficient, not perfect. Takes a lot of stress off, doesn’t it?

RYS 134: When Self-first is Not Selfish
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
You are an individual. So am I. As individuals it is only possible for us to be one half of the relationship we have with each other. Our goal in the relationship we have with each other is to be our best half. On the other hand, in the relationship we have with ourselves, you and I are the entire relationship. Our goal in the relationship we have with ourselves is to be whole by loving ourselves first, so we know how to love each other well.
Contrary to what we have been told by religion, society or our parents, it is not selfish to love ourselves first.
Unless we care for ourselves by honoring our needs, goals and desires we cannot genuinely support others in honoring their needs, goals and desires.
Only by filling ourselves up first do we have it within to give to others without resentment or feeling used and abused; neither of which are loving behaviors.

RYS 133: Your Love is Strong, But …
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
If I had a magic wand I’d touch it to the hearts of those who hurt others and yet claim to love. If I had a magic wand I’d touch it to the hearts of those who allow themselves to be hurt by others and yet claim they are loved. One of the biggest misconceptions we have about relationships is that we have the power to change another person. If we’re just more understanding, patient, loving, open, scream louder, say it in a different way, etc., then he or she will wake up and get it. If it were that easy I would wave my magic wand and the world would transform overnight.
Consistent behavior, not words is proof of who someone is.
Relationships become unfulfilled when we hold onto a fantasy of what we want someone to be rather than accepting the truth of who their behavior is telling us they are.
The only love strong enough to end negative, abusive behavior, is self-love, for until we love ourselves we will not be motivated to take the actions necessary to change.

RYS 132: It Takes Two to Tango
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
I don’t know how to dance the Argentine Tango with its virtually unlimited improvisational opportunities or the American/International Tango where specific steps and patterns are learned for competitive events. If I want to be part of a successful dance team, whether it is for competition or just out for fun on Saturday night, I first have to learn how to dance. The same is true of my having successful relationships because those also require me to be able to move in rhythmic partnership to an ever changing dance of interpersonal dynamics.
What we value (honesty, loyalty, patience, etc.) makes up who we are [ the dance steps of our lives.
To have fulfilling relationships, from friendships to marriages, requires us to stay in step with our values so we do not loose ourselves in relationship.
To recognize good friend or partner material in someone, we must first know what values to look for that reveals their true character.

RYS 131: How I lost 63 Pounds and How I Keep it Off
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
At one time I was obese. The short answer to how I lost the extra weight is, I worked my rear end off through exercise to burn the 220,500 calories necessary to get back down to 130 pounds. The long answer is that before I hit the gym, before I committed to a new habit of eating healthy, and before I could care for my physical body as a daily lifestyle, I had to confront my emotions and why I was stuffing them with food.
To lose feelings of inadequacy we must gain a new sense of self-worth by rewriting the story we tell ourselves about ourselves.
We learn: to feel unworthy, unhealthy eating, a lack of self-esteem, to give up, to self-sabotage, so we must unlearn a negative perception and lack of self-support to create a new healthy self-image and lifestyle.
We must eat to live but to be healthy and maintain our weight we must become emotionally responsible for the foods we eat and the exchange of energy necessary to burn off the calories we consume.

RYS 130: Attention Deficient No More
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
When I was younger I spent much time daydreaming. In school, in church, while watching television, when mom and dad were talking. I was constantly distracted by my thoughts. Needless to say I was not a good student. So while pursuing my master’s degree I genuinely wanted to do my best. I consulted a psychiatrist who, after a long series of tests, diagnosed me with Attention Deficit Disorder. Aptly so, since I was so easily distracted I could not finish reading one sentence without my mind carrying me off to whatever it got distracted by.
Our attention is a resource, just like time and money that must be carefully managed.
We live in a world with constant distractions, but we are not without power over our attention and what we choose to concentrate on.
I believe all of us can cure ourselves of an unfocused attention when we choose to master a mind with a mind of its own by becoming the ever watchful gatekeeper of our thoughts and attention.

RYS 129: Financial Responsibility Buys Happiness
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
In Cabaret, the 1972 movie based on the hit Broadway play, Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey and cast sang these lyrics in one of the movies most memorable scenes. “Money makes the world go around, the world go around, the world go around. Money makes the world go around, that clinking, clanking sound of, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money.”
Money is necessary to exchange for needed things like food, shelter, clothing, etc.
While money allows for the purchasing of things, money itself does not buy happiness.
The financial responsibility of living within a budget is one of the ways we ensure happiness.

RYS 128: Get Away From the Everyday
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
Life can easily become monotonous. Daily routines become ruts. Ruts become habits. Habits become comfortable whether the habit formed is positive or negative. Doing the same actions over and over, driving the same routes, watching the same television, listening to the same music, eating the same foods also become routine, or a rut, or habit. However I find much of my satisfaction and happiness stems from the new experiences I have that intentionally take me away from the everyday.
A planned get-away vacation is great and something to do as often as your schedule and finances allow.
Between the “vacations,” daily breaks in routine offer exposure to new things, ideas, foods, cultures, people, thoughts, experiences, etc., which expand the day in new ways.
Often it is when we go outdoors and listen to the birds, or watch clouds, or take a peaceful walk through a new neighborhood that the answer to a challenge or an inspiration bubbles up from our subconscious all because we have gotten away from our everyday.

RYS 127: I am Getting Married
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
Growing up gay I did not give much thought to getting married. Until recently it was not legal. So when Barbara and I decided to make our relationship official, I had not taken time to sit with what being married to her truly means. Possibly it is because not much will change since we’ve been living together as partners for over 12 years. But, on this wedding eve I am now thinking deeply about why I am eager to say “I do” tomorrow.
Barbara and I support each other emotionally and encourage one another to grow spiritually.
We are best friends who have weathered many emotional storms and as a result are better equipped as a team to handle whatever challenges lie ahead.
We share the same values about money and personal responsibility so our union will strengthen our financial and legal position and will help us protect one another.

RYS 126: Listening to Our Whistleblowers
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
You and I are impressed with people who bravely stand up to injustice. We consider those who blow the whistle on corruption, irresponsibility, neglect, abuse and practices that harm us, the environment and animals, to be superheroes. But often listening to our own personal whistleblowers is a completely different story. Our prideful and defensive ego is not eager to have people call us on our negative behavior.
• No matter how much self-assessment we do, there are still aspects of our behavior to which we remain blind.
• People who share their observations of our negative behavior in a respectful and patient manner are messengers sent from God.
• Learning to embrace the positive feedback of those who care for us allows us to grow our spiritual nature of kindness, responsibility and self-awareness.

RYS 125: Top Ten Best Gifts We Can Give Children
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
While I don’t have children of my own, throughout life I have always been surrounded by children and young adults. Also, as a former wounded and dysfunctional child who’s spent much of my adult life in self-reflection to heal, I’ve learned how critical it is to a child’s success for them to be intentionally guided through the process of growing up. All children must be taught how to behave, what to value, how to express emotion in healthy ways, and how to respectfully treat themselves, other people and all life. And, I know children learn by watching the actions of those individuals they are exposed to.
• It is important to expose children to a wide variety of cultures, experiences and opportunities to learn about themselves, other people and the world.
• Actions speak louder than words when children and young people are learning how to behave and what to value in life.
• Personal responsibility, self-reflection, giving back, honesty and empathy must be modeled for children through the actions of those around them in order for children to value being people of values.

Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
Jobs end. Relationships end. We don’t get what we want when we want it. An inconsiderate driver cuts us off. We encounter a traffic jam. Our job becomes very demanding. The line at the post office is out the door. A check we mail never arrives. We are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Challenge is part of life. You cannot escape being inconvenienced or having to deal with unexpected and unwanted circumstances but you sure do have power over your attitude about what happens in life.
• Every challenge holds the opportunity of a lesson designed to help you grow.
• Each lesson learned is a lesson that does not have to be repeated because while the same thing may happen to you again, the way you respond will be different.
• When you change your attitude about challenges, life becomes easier because you are now open to learning as much as possible by living as the victor over the hard situations in life rather than being the victim of them.

RYS 121: I Love You
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
What does “I love you” mean to you? Have you ever stopped to really think about it? Until I did think about it, I said “I love you” without really knowing the depth of emotional responsibility associated with those three words. Love is caring and affection so “I love you,” means we cherish the person on the receiving end of our fondness. And, to feel real I learned “I love you,” needs to be backed up with consistent positive action.
· Love is an unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another.
· Love is demonstrated through behaviors such as respect, kindness, loyalty and support.
· Love is honest and willing to overcome the challenges that arise in relationship and in life.

RYS 120: A Change in Perspective can Change our Destiny
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
I was thirteen when my father took me on a day trip to Austin. One of our stops was the floor of the Texas Senate, the upper house of the State Legislature. Maybe dad hoped the experience would ignite within me the desire to someday run for office. While I have not pursued a position in government, I did cultivate a deep appreciation for the integrity of those who truly desire to serve and for the ideals of democracy, and the important role I, and every citizen, play in its success.
• Whether in business, relationships, or resolving our differences, you and I create the most success and fulfillment by regulating ourselves with the principles of heart.
• We have a spiritual responsibility to be political, to care deeply about the character of those we elect.
• To direct the course of our democracy we must change our thinking from electing politicians to choosing servant-leaders.

RYS 119: A Self-less Act of Love
Episode in
Romancing Your Soul Podcast
In this Episode:
It has been hard watching our beloved Celine Dion suffer over the death of her husband of 21 years, Rene Angelil, followed two days later by the death of her brother Daniel Dion. We empathize with her loss because we too have experienced the death of loved ones. Many of us don’t think of preparing to pass away, but we should. Rene Angelil did prepare, leaving Celine and the children with all his affairs in order as a final act of love for them.
• There is a business side to loving that cannot simply be ignored because we don’t want to think of our own death.
• Without our having the necessary papers and plans in order the state, not our family, decides what to do with our property.
• Being prepared is a self-less act of love and one that is easy to do with a little bit of time and a big piece of our heart.

But, overall the quality of life, our level of fulfillment and peace, is a choice we make, moment by moment, in how we deal most directly with the responsibilities that come with being an adult.
• Displeasure and dissatisfaction arise when we neglect to oversee our choices in relationship, career, finances, stuffing our emotions, and by refusing to address painful unresolved issues.
• The choice to be happy begins by looking to find what we can change about ourselves and the situations over which we have influence, to produce greater levels of contentment.
• It is possible to be happy even when going through difficult and painful life events by choosing to focus on the positive that is present even in the hardest of times.
