(NSFW) “Come join the Navy SEALs, have you tried the Hef?”  We talk to a few former Navy SEALs that decided to open up a brewery.  We record this show at Protector Brewery, part of the Miralani Makers District, and an all organic brewery, the only one in San Diego.  On the show, Sean Haggerty and Ryan Sangster join us to get into the history of the brewery and we drink all the beers. Interview Normally we find out more about the owners and brewers, but the history of their journey is so closely tied to the creation of this brewery.  We find out how Protector got its branding as well as where the first “homebrewed” beer was made.  We wonder why they chose to open up the spot in the Miralani Makers District where there is a lot of competition.  Since Beagle was one of the people who bid for the construction job, we do have some construction talk.  We talk about the first beer of the eight that happened to be on tap that night.  Esthela wonders why they decided to go all organic.  That leads us to try the next three beers in the flight. After a short break, we come back with the nitro version of one of the beers get into the statistics of the brewhouse.  We drink more of the second flight and move onto future beers and collaborations.  A ghost from the past comes along when we discuss the first Protector beer we ever had on the show, The Sour IPA.  After some more flight beers, Esthela brings up a topic that is hot right now in craft beer, being overly masculine as a brand, she wonders how Protector responds to the criticism.  We then get into the news. Interview The show starts off with some talk of the Sore Eye Cup award-winning beer, Tabula Rasa, and some of the new awards Second Chance has won recently.  We then switch gears to find out how this beer came to be.  We ask the folks at OMBAC about the OTL tournament and how it started.  We also find out what roles Tom and Patrick have with OMBAC.  We also find out there is a beer festival, with actual craft beer!  After some talk about some of the members that have been very successful in winning the tournament, we take a break. (NSFW) We are back at one of our home bases, Pariah Brewing.  Pariah invited us to do a live show at their release of My Cat From Helles where the some of the proceeds and all of the tips that night went to charity.  Last year when Pariah did a charity event, they chose only one charity, this year they wanted to increase that.  This year the charities involved were the YWCA and Sweet Souls Foundation.  We are joined first by Christa Mitchell, the co-founder, and wife of Brian Mitchell.  Christa explains the history of the beer and what this night is all about. (NSFW) We have a few three-time guests on the show this week!  We headed over to Council’s new tasting room and brewhouse in Santee, CA.  It is about 11 miles East of their Kearny Mesa tasting room and brewhouse.  The Santee location used to be Finest Made Ales (aka Butchers) and Manzanita Brewing.  We are joined again by Liz and Curtis Chism (and baby Olivia.) There’s some pre-show banter but then we get into it and Liz breaks down how this spot became Council’s new Santee location.  From there we find out that Council has a really cool item they bought to help with buying beers to go and their strategy with their future of bottle and can sizes.  We take a small break to get more beer. We come back with kombucha talk.  Council is producing their own kombucha that generally stays under 1% ABV.  We ask more about their last year and what trends have they seen in their fourth year.  Esthela wonders what beers will be brewed at Santee versus beers at Kearny Mesa.  That transitions to the amount of beer they may produce with the new system.  After mentioning one of their really amazing tasting room managers, Liz talks more about hiring people from the area and how it helps build confidence from patrons.  We then go over the details of the grand opening of the Santee location which will be three days, June 8-10, 2018. (NSFW) We finally got them on the show!  The Routine, who does all our music on the show, joins us along with folks from Thunderhawk Alements and Amplified Ale Works.  A new album from The Routine is coming out June 2nd called Puddin’.  Along with that album, The Routine collaborated with Thunderhawk and Amplified to make a new beer also called Puddin’.  That beer will be released in cans starting May 25th at both breweries.  There will a big party on June 2nd at Thunderhawk for the album release and The Routine along with IMAGINARY MACHINE and Jonny Tarr. (NSFW) Oh boy!  The plan was to take this week off since we had a show in the tank ready to go.  Well, the San Diego craft beer world had a different idea for us.  By now most of you should have heard about the foreclosure of GFBC Inc. which includes all of Green Flash Brewing Co.‘s assets along with all of Alpine Beer Co.‘s assets.  Normally, Green Flash and Alpine would be no more and those assets would be auctioned off or sold to another entity.  Well, they were sold very quickly, almost immediately to a new entity, WC IPA LLC, which bought them from Camerica bank that gave GFBC Inc. it’s $20M loan for the Virginia facility.  WC IPA LLC now owns the brands Green Flash Brewing and Alpine Beer Co. Getting back to the show, we start the show with a surprise guest, Pat McIlhenney, the founder of Alpine Beer Co. and make sure to go through the fact as we know them.  After confirming the details, we then ask Pat his experience during this transition.  We end the interview with one very important question that should make craft beer geeks very happy. We take a break and come back to the opinion and speculation portion of the show.  You’ll hear Brian’s thoughts on the situation as well as all four hosts of the show, Greg, Esthela, and Travis.  After we go through how we really feel about the handling of the transitions, we get into the news topics and close out the show. Brewers Association released overall industry numbers today. We now have 6,372 craft breweries in the USA, up 16% over 2016. Although the closing rate is only 2.6%, that is significantly higher than ‘16. Great quote from Bart Watson, chief economist from the BA – “Beer lovers want to support businesses that align with their values and are having a positive impact on their local communities and our larger society,” added Watson. “That’s what small and independent craft brewers are all about. (NSFW) We have a special extra episode for you this week!  We were invited to go to Longship Brewery’s first can release.  It is a Kölsch that was a collaboration brew with Global Conservation Force.  The goal of the collaboration was to brew something the workers of GCF could drink while they are saving animals from poachers in Africa.  The name of the beer is Wildlife Guardian and the beer on draft at the brewery and go-to cans should still be available as of the release of this show. Interview We start the show off with Dan Jachimowicz from Longship and Mike Veale from Global Conservation Force.  We learn a little bit about what GCF stands for and their role in helping keep endangered animals away from extinction.  We get into how the two companies came to do this collaboration and what its purpose is.  Finally, we let you know how you can get some of the beer. We take a break and come back with Joel Geier from Brewery Travels and Sommbeer.  He has been able to travel the US and chronicle his beer travels on Twitter and via the Sommbeer website.  During the interview, we ask about places he wants to go in the US for beer as well as places he has already gone to in San Diego.  We finish it up with his thoughts on “big beer” like Ballast Point and Saint Archer. (NSFW) Troy and David are back on the show!  Wait a minute, they haven’t been on the show before!  It all depends on who you ask, we recorded with them a few weeks back but the show did not come out to the satisfaction of all of us.  We decided to give them another chance and we are very happy we did, the show turned out amazing.  Troy and David are from San Diego Magazine and both of them are on the Happy Half Hour Podcast along with Erin Chambers Smith, and Archana Ram. The Brewers Association released the top 50 breweries by volume.  Stone is up one spot to 8, Karl Strauss stays strong at 41, & Green Flash drops a bit to 43. Barrel Rescue to open in March and close pretty much right after. (NSFW) What happens when a scheduled show falls through the cracks?  You call on friends to come over and make it all better.  We are so happy to be joined on this show by Larry Monasakanian of Fall Brewing, Doug Hasker of Gordon Biersch, and Eddie Trejo of Machete Beer House.  We are also joined for a short time by a fan of the show, Michael Scott from La Buena Cheve podcast. We start off with Michael and Larry on the show and we delve into Larry’s beer past.  We don’t get too deep when Eddie shows up and we spot Doug in the crowd and convince him to come on the show for a bit.  Doug is one of the brewers that really knows how to brew a lager, so it is very apropos that he is there while we drink Fall’s Rise Above.  We wonder what breweries in San Diego are making good lagers.  We then move the conversation back over to Eddie.  Esthela wonders how Eddie started his beer drinking and how Machete got started. After a break, we come back with a new beer and talk about sales.  Since we have a salesperson and a bar owner on the same show, we are able to see the sales process from both experiences.  That moves into a conversation about tap handles and grocery store space.  Eddie talks about how things are different now after being open for three years from when he first opened.  Eddie and Esthela talk about a beer pairing dinner on March 26 where all the chefs are women.  Tickets can be purchased here.  We crack open a few beers and some ice cream too.  While talking about coffee and beer, we open up what would be classified as a pastry stout, Burgeon’s Glazed Imperial Stout. In the News Longship Brewery has partnered with Global Conservation Force (GCF) to brew a collaboration beer designed to support Anti-Poaching Units (APUs) around the world.  Collaboration beer, Wildlife Guardian, will be launched on March 24 3-9PM. It’s citrusy kölsch, light in body but rich in flavor, qualities are specifically chosen to honor rangers overseas working all day in the heat.
