Episode 11 - Exploring EU Sanctions with Simond de Galbert

Today we are joined by French diplomat and CSIS Resident Fellow Simond de Galbert. We acknowledge that at times, the SL Podcast can be a bit too focused on this side of the pond. So in order to bring some much needed balance to the force, Simond offered to give a us a European perspective on sanctions use and implementation, the Iran deal, Russia, and a whole lot more.  Don't forget to subscribe to the SL Podcast on iTunes and sign up for our Newsletter.

Episode 8 - Iran Deal or No Iran Deal with Suzanne Maloney

When we scheduled this podcast with Brookings Iran expert Suzanne Maloney we were still waiting to hear whether or not there would be a comprehensive nuclear agreement between the P5+1 and Iran.  And we're still waiting...  But for those of you who have been glued to your Twitter feed for the last few days, we've got you covered in either case - we discuss everything from the current state of negotiations to what happens if negotiations break down to the ability of the U.S. to deliver legitimate sanctions relief.  Don't forget to subscribe on iTunes so that you don't miss out when we finally do get to talk about a deal (maybe).

Episode 7 - Iran's Post-deal Oil Outlook with Matt Reed

As the June 30 deadline for a comprehensive nuclear agreement between the P5+1 and Iran creeps up on us, it's important to keep perspective on how quickly Iran will be able to reintegrate itself into the global economy. This is particularly true in the context of Iran's oil sector, given its importance to the Iranian economy writ large.  I sat down with Matt Reed, Vice President at Foreign Reports, a DC consultancy focused on politics and oil markets in the Middle East to discuss what sanctions relief means for Iranian oil production and exports.

Episode 6 - MOAR CYBER!! with NYU's Zach Goldman

We decided that one cyber sanctions-related podcast just wasn't enough so today we're joined by Zach Goldman, the Executive Director of the Center on Law and Security at NYU's School of Law.  In this episode we discuss the interplay (or lack thereof) between sanctions practictioners, policy experts, and academics and Zach's position at the center of these sometimes conflicting approaches to sanctions. We then transition to the cyber sanctions program, which still lacks any actual sanctions targets. We explore the background of the new program, the different types of potential targets and how companies, particularly tech companies will need to factor cyber sanctions into their overall compliance efforts. We finish with the elephant in the room -- Congress...  For more on cyber sanctions, check out Zach's recent CFR piece and keep an eye out for his upcoming journal article on the subject.

Episode 4 - How to Build a Better Sanctions Program with Richard Nephew

For Episode 4 of the Sanction Law Podcast we are joined by the one and only Richard Nephew, who before taking over as the head Columbia University's Program on Economic Statecraft, Sanctions and Energy Markets, was the Deputy Principal Coordinator for Sanctions Policy at the State Department.  We discussed what makes a good sanctions program, how we did with Iran, and how sanctions can be improved going forward with respect to deployment, implementation, enforcement, and strategic communications. For those of you thinking deep thoughts about the role and risks of sanctions for U.S. policy, as well as those who want a better understanding of how policymakers view sanctions, this episode is for you.  This is also the first international edition of the Sanction Law podcast, as Erich joined us from his hotel room in Dubai.  NOTE: We apologize in advance for the slight audio clipping, the internet in Dubai could use some work.

Episode 2 - Burma & Cuba with Peter Kucik

Today we're joined by Peter Kucik, a former Senior Sanctions Adviser at OFAC and a Principal at Inle Advisory Group, a Myanmar-centric business consultancy.  Our grand plans to focus the discussion on Cuba and the State Sponsor of Terrorism designation were thwarted by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, who issued the first major Burma SDN delisting in several years by removing sanctions on Win Aung and his company Dagon International. Win Aung is the first of the so-called "cronies" to be removed and demonstrates that the U.S. government is working on removing Burmese SDNs.   We did eventually get our Cuba fix in and tried to bring some much-need #realtalk to the sanctions discussion.
