Send Us Feedback   Lara Jean Chorostecki Interview Jamie had the chance to talk with Lara Jean Chorostecki (pronounced “Coros Techie” – like a “chorus techie” – according to Lara Jean herself) about her role on Hannibal and her acting career in general.   Lara Jean, a Canadian actress based out of Toronto, got her start in acting at age 11 playing Wendy in Brampton, Ontario’s Little Theater production of Peter Pan.  This was her first proper role, but she actually had fallen in love with acting three years earlier, when at the age of eight when she saw Susan Gilmour play Fantine in Les Misérables.  At 17 she had the chance to work with Ms. Gilmour in the Stratford Festival production of Threepenny Opera. She learned of the role of Freddie Lounds through her agent, and at first was unaware of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s portrayal in the 2002 film adaptation of the Thomas Harris novel, The Red Dragon. She eventually watched the film as she was preparing for a call back with Bryan Fuller and David Slade.  Her character on the show was based on Rebekah Brooks, the editor of the British newspaper News of the World during the now infamous phone hacking scandal of 2011.  The influence is appropriate; both women proudly possess fiery red curly hair and the tenacity to do whatever it takes to get a news story. If you enjoyed watching Lara Jean Chorostecki in Hannibal, you can also catch her in as Krystina Breeland in X Company, a CBC (Canadian Broadcast Center) production. X Company is an emotionally-driven character drama, set in the thrilling and dangerous world of WWII espionage and covert operations.  It’s set to start its second season.  Also coming in 2016 you will be able to see her in the feature film The Masked Saint, a movie about the journey of a professional wrestler who becomes a small town pastor and moonlights as a masked vigilante fighting injustice. Send Us Feedback Glenn Fleshler Interview * Correction:  When Jamie was introducing Glenn Fleshler he mentioned his roles on True Detective and Boardwalk Empire.  Jamie mistakenly stated that Fleshler played George Remus on True Detective; he actually played this role on Boardwalk Empire. Jamie had a chance to call Glenn Fleshler, an accomplished character actor, on Saturday, August 15th.  Glenn Fleshler is most recognizable from his roles as Errol Childress on season one of True Detective and George Remus, a recurring role on Boardwalk Empire.  Jamie spoke with him about those roles as well as the role of Cordell Doemling, Mason Verger’s personal medical professional and henchman, on this season of NBC’s Hannibal.   Fleshler is a an actor born and bred in New York City.  His parents often took him to the theater and the movies as a child and as a result he fell in love with acting at an early age.  He sees acting as a craft that has to constantly be developed by the actor and enjoys any opportunity to challenge himself and grow in his craft.   Over the past couple of years Fleshler has had the opportunity to work with actors and directors that he grew up watching in stage and in the movies.  Among those are directors Mike Nichols and Woody Allen, as well as actress Meryl Streep.  There is a very funny Woody Allen anecdote that Fleshler shares with Jamie that you have to hear. If you enjoyed Fleshler as Cordell or remember him True Detective and Boardwalk Empire you can catch him some upcoming series and movies.  Fleshler will appear in Crime on HBO, Billions on Showtime, and two upcoming movies: The Seagull and The Rendezvous. Send Us Feedback Hannibal – S3E10 – And the Woman Clothed in the Sun Part II Soul searching and introspection were the dishes that Fuller and crew were serving up this week for Fannibals.  Francis Dolarhyde was searching for Hannibal’s attention but had a change of heart and was looking to stop his “becoming.”  Will was looking inward to make sense of everything that happened with Hannibal and sought out the help of Dr. Du Maurier since they both had similar experiences.  What he found was that their natures are completely different.  Jamie and Jenny try and make sense of this episode and do their own soul searching, since their time with Hannibal is coming to a close. And the Woman Clothed in Sun Part II Recap The second half of “And the Woman Clothed in the Sun” begins with Dolarhyde finding his way to Hannibal’s office and using some fancy technology to call Hannibal in prison.  We get to see the other half of the conversation that ended the last episode, and discover that this shy boy has a very active imagination, just like Will and Hannibal. Will, looking to make sense of everything, visits Bedelia while she is giving a lecture about her time with Hannibal.  After a very feisty exchange, Will tells her he needs to talk to her. She responds by telling him to make an appointment. Dolarhyde surprises Reba McClain by taking her to the zoo to pet a tiger which has been put to sleep in preparation for oral surgery.  This moves Reba so much she goes back to Dolarhyde’s house and spends the night there.  The morning after, fearing that Reba may have found his scrapbook, Dolarhyde takes her home in order to protect who he is becoming. Hannibal does a little phone freaking himself as a scene directly lifted from the books plays out.  He calls Dr. Chilton’s office in order to get Will’s home address. What will he being doing with this information? The meat of the episode comes when Will finally has his session with Bedelia. He’s looking for answers as to why she reacted differently to her time with Hannibal than he himself did.  Through flashbacks we see the patient Hannibal referred to Bedelia, Neal Frank, during his sessions with her.  It’s revealed that Hannibal was doing similar things to Neal as he’d done to Will, and Neal was expressing his concerns to Bedelia.  Bedelia was dismissive of Neal’s concerns which eventually caused him to choke on his own tongue.  Bedelia shoved her hand down his throat to suffocate him.  During her session with Will, Bedelia tells Will it’s in his nature to help those that are needy and it’s in her nature to put them out of their misery. Will meets with Hannibal again to discuss Dolarhyde and Hannibal tips Will off to The Great Red Dragon painting in order to point Will in the right direction. After his night with Reba, Dolarhyde decides to try and stop his “becoming.” In order to do this he uses a fake identity to get into the Brooklyn Museum in order to see the original Great Red Dragon watercolor.  Once there, he eats the painting in order to stop the monster from transforming him.  Will arrives at the museum just after Dolarhyde and finds him in the elevator.  Will is attacked by Dolarhyde, giving him enough time to escape. Send Us Feedback   Hannibal S03E08 – The Great Red Dragon It’s the beginning of a new chapter in Bryan Fuller’s Lecterverse and Francis Dolarhyde is taking the stage while Hannibal languishes in his memory palace. The second half of the season begins with the events of the Red Dragon.  Just as Mr. Dolarhyde is becoming something else, it appears three years have helped the Hannibal crew morph into something else, both collectively and individually. Jamie and Jenny share their reaction to a storyline we may not see the end of and Jamie shares his experiences at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where he got to see a sneak peak of The Great Red Dragon and meet Bryan Fuller. The Great Red Dragon Recap The Great Red Dragon fast forwards time three years and was an episode in which what was not said was just as important as what was said.  The first 8-10 minutes are devoid of dialogue as we see Richard Armitage, as Francis Dolarhyde, make himself into The Red Dragon from the famous William Blake painting.  There is the back tattoo, the snaggle tooth dentures, and the rigorous physical conditioning. While Francis is unsuccessfully fighting off his “becoming” and gaining the nickname “The Tooth Fairy” after killing two families, Hannibal is living inside his memory palace.  Bryan Fuller and crew made an excellent style choice in allowing the audience into the palace and see Hannibal’s surroundings as he sees them.  We begin with a conversation between Hannibal and Alana, who is now administrator of the Baltimore Hospital for the Criminally Insane, during which Hannibal explains he avoided the death penalty with an insanity plea in order to keep his promise to kill her.  Later he has a meal with Dr. Chilton who explains that he will be writing a book about The Tooth Fairy because Hannibal’s appeal is too niche. While Hannibal is busy entertaining himself with those from his past, Dolarhyde is fighting off hallucinations and scrapbooking about both his own crimes as well as the crimes of Hannibal.  It is Dolarhyde’s criminal activity that brings Jack back to Will to ask him for his help.  Will, who is now married and has a step son, is reluctant to go back and work with the FBI, but after being urged to by his wife, Molly, he eventually decides to go. Will travels to Buffalo, NY to investigate the crime scene at the Leeds’ family home.  Once again there is 3-5 minutes of silence before Bryan Fuller and crew resurrect the visual effect used in the first season to show Will recreating the crime in his mind. Through his investigation, Will determines that Dolarhyde must have touched Mrs. Leeds with his bare hands. Cue Jimmy Price and Brian Zeller, who arrive to gather prints and create a mold of Dolarhyde’s mouth from the bite marks left on Mrs. Leeds.  It’s at this point that Will realizes he needs a special frame of mind to solve this case and find The Tooth Fairy.  The episode ends with Will and Hannibal greeting each other once again. Hannibal S03E09 – And the Woman Clothed with the Sun Fancy Camera work this week revealed that they the theme for this episode is estrangement and the dialogue revealed another theme, family.  Will and Hannibal keep things impersonal because they are estranged and Will would like to keep it that way.  Will and Alana catch up in her office because it’s apparent that they have become estranged over the past three years as well. When we last saw Freddie, Will seemed to have warmed up to her since she allowed herself to be used to help catch Hannibal.  That is no longer the cause as he photographed his junk in the hospital after the event of Mizumono.  Finally when Jack comes to visit Hannibal, Hannibal stresses the distance between him and Jack by pointing out his new attire and making guesses at what he is currently doing in his life.  It appears that that the only ones that are not estranged are Alana and Hannibal because Alana wanted it that way. Now even though this little twisted crime fighting and committing family is estranged from one another they have created their own families to help them heal from the atrocities they committed together and against one another. Listen as Jamie and Jenny discuss all these personal dynamics, and the hunt for Francis Dolarhyde. And the Woman Clothed with the Sun Recap Will visits Hannibal to ask for his help in finding The Tooth Fairy, and Hannibal acts reluctant because he fears what it may do to Will.  The prospect of Will leaving makes him decide to look at the case file and give Will his assessment.  While Hannibal becomes familiar with all things Francis Dolarhyde, Will and Alana catch up.  Will learns of Alana’s son and Alana shares her reasons for taking the job at the Baltimore Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Through a flashback we see Hannibal and Abigail discuss how they are going to fake her death and take a piece of flesh. During Hannibal and Will’s discussion of The Tooth Fairy, we see Hannibal and Will back in Hannibal’s office just like old times.  As the scene moves to the Jacoby’s home Hannibal prods Will for information about his life, trying to find an angle with which to weasel his way back into Will’s life.  Will doesn’t take the bait.  Later, Alana visits Hannibal to give him a warning: “Don’t hurt Will or I’ll take everything you love and leave you with indignity.” In another flashback, Hannibal and Abigail engage in a therapy session in which he has her slash the throat of her dead father. Later we get to see Jimmy Price and Bryan Zeller again as they reveal that the latest family to be killed buried their cat a few days before they were murdered.  They found a link between this and the dog that had its abdomen punctured before the last murder.  Will then goes to the crime scene and finds Freddie Lounds.  They have a heated discussion over how she photographed Will while in the hospital after Hannibal gutted him. She threatens to spin recent events as the FBI using one psychopath to find another and, eventually, does just that with an article.  Francis Dolarhyde reads the article and now knows about Will and Hannibal. Francis goes to see Reba McClain, the blind film developer at the company where he works.  He asks her for infrared film and she offers to develop it for him.  Later, he gives her a ride home and she invites him into her house.  They have a discussion about his speech impediment and her blindness. Will talks over the phone with Molly about dogs and missing one another.  It appears that Will has an active imagination like Hannibal, since Molly was in the room with him until she made Will uncomfortable.  Jack goes to visit Hannibal and, during their discussion, Jack expresses that he needs Hannibal to help Will so they can find The Tooth Fairy. As always, Hannibal tries to make Jack feel responsible for anything that may happen to Will. In the third and final flashback of the episode Hannibal remembers receiving the phone call from Will on the night of Mizumono.  He has a quick discussion with Abigail about hunting together and asks her to wait upstairs. The episode ends with Dolarhyde calling Lecter in prison and telling him that he is becoming the great red dragon. Send Us Feedback   HANNIBAL S03E06 – Dolce So it seems this episode was all about letting go and moving on, as Will and Hannibal both recognized that they may not survive separation if it becomes necessary for them to split.  It’s nice to know that Will measures the passing of time as before Hannibal and after Hannibal.  Will is not the only person that Hannibal has needed to let go.  It appears he had to let Bedelia slip from his grasp, as she wasn’t quite marinated enough for him to eat her hastily.  It’s not quite clear if Alana and Margot are letting go of Mason, but they are definitely planning for a world without him.  Listen as Jenny and Jamie break down the events that took place during Dolce. Dolce Recap Dolce set the stage for events that will lead us to the second half of Hannibal’s third season.  Hannibal embodied this with his statement to Bedelia after she cleaned and stitched him up from his fight with Jack. “I see my end in my beginning,” he tells her, as he sketches his view of Florence.  This also sets the stage for a series of moments in which Hannibal’s key players must let go and move into the future.  While we are on subject of Bedelia, let’s talk about Gillian Anderson’s inspired performance this episode.  Bedelia is the first person Hannibal must let go of, because he knows the others are closing in and he can’t eat her the way he would like to. Bedelia forces his hand and has Hannibal concoct a plan to give her a plan for an alibi.  The best scene with Bedelia occurs when, just as she is about to implement this plan, Chiyoh shows up. These former captives of Hannibal spar with each other in way that suggests jealously, as the two use one-upmanship to determine which of them has a closer relationship to Hannibal. Later, Bedelia proves once again how versatile and determined to survive she is, as she breaks the Lydia Fell character to give the Italian investigator a clue as to where Hannibal may be.  It’s this very same survival instinct and versatility that, earlier in the episode, impressed Jack rather than angering him. Bravo, Ms. Anderson – let’s hope your Bedelia survives Florence so we may see her later in this season. Jack and Will were reunited in this episode as they worked together, outside the law.  You would think that they would decide to stay on the correct side of the thin blue line this time because of the events of last season, but it seems their desire to move on and leave Hannibal in their past has clouded their judgement.  Will’s first mistake was going to see Hannibal alone.  Where did he find him?  In front of the Botticelli, obviously committing the painting to his memory palace.  This meeting between two of them was akin to something out of a Henry James romance, as they both agreed they are blurring into each other.  Will – like many broken-hearted lovers – declares that he will forever measure time in his life as before and after Hannibal.  How many of us haven’t done that with a great love that we eventually lost?  Of course, didn’t think many hands would go up after that question. While Will and Hannibal are leaving the museum, Chiyoh reveals some of her intentions before Will is able to leave Hannibal with same smile Hannibal gave to him.  Chiyoh shot Will in the shoulder, forcing Hannibal to take him to Sogliato’s apartment.  Jack makes his way to Sogliato’s as well after a very intense elevator ride with Chiyoh.  Hannibal was lying in wait for Jack and he trapped both Jack and Will at Sogiliato’s dinner table, where (as those of you who have seen the movies and read the books are well aware) Will was about to suffer the same fate as Paul Krendler. However, this was cut short and Will was saved by being (apparently) caught by Mason Verger. Let’s talk about Mason.  It seems he now has his “true detective” style cook in Cordell, who was using pig’s tails to discover how best to cook Hannibal’s digits.  He wasn’t too broken up about Pazzi’s fate as he had Margo buy out the entire Florence investigators department.  Mason expressed his regret for surgically removing Margo’s uterus, which prompted an uncomfortable and quite incestuous baby conversation.  Margo then kaleidoscopically collided with Alan Bloom in a way that suggests Hannibal has turned Alana off men.  After their melding into one both figuratively and visually, they make plans for a life without Mason in it – one that apparently will have Alana having to do a bit of dirty work. Hannibal – S03E06 – Dogestivo Digestivo is an end to a chapter in the Bryan Fuller Hannibal universe.  This does not mean an end to all things Hannibal.  That won’t happen for six more episodes.  With this end comes a new beginning.  That beginning will come in the next installment of Hannibal what the Great Red Dragon is revealed.  Until then, listen to what Jamie and Jenny had to say about how the breakup of Will and Hannibal. Digestivo Recap Digestivo begins with the Florence police breaking up Hannibal’s dinner party.  It seems that Jack and Hannibal won’t be getting inside Will’s head after all.  The police carry Hannibal and Will away to Muskrat Farms and  Mason Verger while they decide it’s best to kill Jack to keep him quiet.  Chiyoh puts a stop to their plans and kills the two officers left behind to take Jack out. In return for saving Jack, Chiyoh demands to know where they were taking Hannibal.  Jack obliges out of his gratitude for being alive. Back at Muskrat Farm Mason and Cordell patiently await Will and Hannibal’s arrival.  Meanwhile Alana and Margot make plans to get what they need out of Mason in order for Alana to be a surrogate for Margot.  More on the fate of a Verger baby later. As Will and Hannibal eat dinner with Mason, Cordell explains how he will prepare Hannibal for Mason – a prospect which Hannibal seems smugly delighted by.  It’s also revealed that Mason will receive Will’s face via a facial transplant so that he may eat Hannibal while wearing Will’s face.  Will doesn’t seem to like this very much – a fact made apparent when he takes a bite out of Cordell’s cheek. After dinner Will and Alana are reunited and she explains that the FBI will not be coming to save them from their fate.  This is because Mason falsely informed the FBI that he was being harassed by Jack, guaranteeing that any claims Jack makes against Mason will not be taken seriously.  Will then tells Alana that she will need to evolve and take care of Mason herself to have someone (meaning Hannibal) do it for her. Send Us Feedback HANNIBAL S03E05 – CONTORNO In the Contonto, the fifth installment in Hannibal’s third season, things get a bit twisted.  This makes sense, since reciprocity is the theme driving this episode.  The players that have been orbiting the black hole that is Hannibal are drawing nearer to him and in doing so may collide with one another or get sucked into oblivion – as we see with one individual this week.  This doesn’t mean that Hannibal still has the upper hand because, as everyone swirls closer to him, it’s only natural that things begin to spin out of control.  Listen to Jamie and Jenny discuss how they thought things unravelled this week and just how twisted they think things will become. Contorno Recap The episode opens with Will and Chiyo traveling by train to Florence because of Will’s hunch about Hannibal’s love of Botticelli.  They discuss Hannibal’s nature and what he means to them.  It starts to become clear they that may not be on the same page. Back in Florence, Hannibal and Bedelia have a discussion about Hannibal’s fate as they both know that Will is swirling closer in orbit and could very well be on his way to Florence to kill Hannibal.  Bedelia also points out that Hannibal intends to kill Will, which reinforces this episode’s theme of reciprocity. Jack spreads Bella’s ashes and discards his wedding ring.  It appears that he has not let Hannibal go, as he told Dr. Chilton a few episodes ago.  He was letting Bella go so that he may continue his search for Hannibal.  He has dinner with Pazzi and his wife and warns Pazzi of the path he is going down as he went down it himself and it led nowhere.  Pazzi tells Jack that he wants the glory of catching Hannibal because of what Hannibal did to his career twenty years prior. Alana Bloom reveals her investigative skills to Mason Verger this week as she recounts the purchases Bedelia has been making for Hannibal over the past three months. Pazzi meets Lecter at the Capponi Library to probe him for information about the two missing men that worked at the Library.  Lecter knows that, since Pazzi did not come with other police, he is going to sell him to Mason.  Pazzi does ultimately decide to sell Lector to Mason after a phone call and video conference.  During the video conference Mason informs Pazzi that he will need Lecter’s fingerprint to verify that it is him. Back on the train, Will awakes at night to find that Chiyo has gone outside to the back of the train.  They have a discussion about Hannibal and how he influences people and Chiyo alludes to possibly having been seduced by Hannibal in the past as she kisses Will.  She throws him off the train just after the kiss.  She either wants to be with Hannibal or she wants to be the one to kill him. Pazzi returns to Hannibal with a relic as a gift.  He uses this visit as an excuse to try and get a fingerprint from Hannibal.  This doesn’t turn out so well for Pazzi, as he ends up hanging with his guts out just like his ancestor.  Jack sees Hannibal do this to Pazzi and rushed into the library.  This is when Jack reciprocates the beat down that Hannibal gave him last year in the season two closer.  The episode ends with Hannibal slithering down the body of Pazzi and running to escape Jack. Send Us Feedback The gang’s all here for the fourth instalment of Hannibal in season 3, Aperitivo, and this time the theme is not forgiveness but revenge. This was a catch-up episode in which the audience had a chance to see what’s been going on with Alana Bloom, Jack Crawford, and Mason Verger in the eight months since the previous season’s finale.  This week Jamie and Jenny discuss that theme of as well as the return of her self-proclaimed boyfriend Dr. Chilton along with the series’ other core characters.  They also have some interesting things to say about the noticeable difference in Alana this season compared to the last. Aperitivo Recap Dr. Chilton Aperitivo opened up with Dr. Chilton visiting Mason Verger and discussing the disfigurements Hannibal left them with last season.  They discussed revenge and Mason’s desire for help from Dr. Chilton.  Chilton respectfully declined and later went on his own post-Mizumono tour to try and recruit his own revenge army.  He visited both Will Graham and Alana Bloom in the hospital, but they both blew him off.  Poor Dr. Chilton – he can’t even use the post traumatic stress syndrome everyone on the show must be experiencing as a way to make friends. Jack Crawford It seems that Jack’s brush with death has made him more comfortable with Bella and gave him the desire to be with her during her last days.  We first see Jack after he has healed and visited Will to make sense of everything that happened in Mizumono.  Jack wanted to know why Will warned Hannibal; Will answered it was because Hannibal was his friend and he wanted to run away with him.  It’s apparent that this was this moment that allowed Jack to let Will go and focus on Bella instead. Chilton visited Jack at the FBI in an effort to recruit him for his revenge scheme, but Jack also blew Chilton off by telling him he is now focusing on being with Bella.  This is where the audience saw the greatest change in Jack.  All last season he was willing to ignore his dying wife in order to find and catch the Chesapeake Ripper.  He was so focused on this that he wanted her to delay her death until he had accomplished his goal; only afterwards could he give her his full attention.  This changed as he sat in Hannibal’s pantry, realized he was dying, and called Bella so that they could be together for whatever remained of their lives.  He said just that to her during a flashback of him in the hospital after he survived Hannibal’s attack.  For the rest of Aperitivo Jack was focused on Bella, spending time with her and caring for her until he realized her peace was more important than his need to be with her.  Jack did for Bella what she asked Hannibal to do for her last season.  He gave her a lethal dose of her medication and laid with her until she died in his arms. Jack’s story this episode ends with him receiving a condolence letter from Hannibal while sitting in the church where Bella’s funeral took place.  Will visits him and they discuss their shared knowledge of what Will is going to do and what’s coming. Mason Verger & Alana Bloom Alana and Mason’s storyline are intertwined in this episode; it seems this will continue for much of this season.  Alana visited Mason and agreed to become his therapist and join his “let’s get revenge in Hannibal” team.  She is not only Mason’s therapist but also his profiler in order to help him catch Hannibal.  During their first meeting, they had a strong discussion about revenge.  Alan assured Mason that although she was raised with religion she is no shrinking violet when it comes to the idea of getting revenge on Hannibal.  In their second meeting Alana seemed like a black widow spider spinning a web with Mason in order to catch their prey.  They spoke about where Hannibal might be and she uses her FBI profiler skills like never before, providing Mason with a spot-on prediction of where Hannibal is hiding out.  Later, we learn of Mason’s plans for Hannibal through a conversation with his nurse Cordell.  Mason tells Cordell he wants Hannibal to be eaten alive and Cordell agrees to help him make that happen. Will Graham Will is not present for much of Aperitivo, but when he is there his appearances are more powerful than they have been all season. There was the aforementioned Jack flashback, but the most powerful scene was between him and Alana.  After being released from the hospital, Alana visited Hannibal’s home to try and make sense of everything.  She finds Will alone sitting in the kitchen; he tells her he is building his memory palace and visiting old friends.  In this scene, Alana delivered the best line of the episode and the ultimate summation of Hannibal’s character: “Friendship with Hannibal is blackmail elevated to love.” The episode ends with Jack and Alana meeting at Will’s house and Alana telling Jack that will has already left.  The last scene is Will on a sailboat apparently sailing to Europe. SCP37 – Hannibal S03E03 – “Two Sides of the Same Coin” The strangely-named third episode of Hannibal’s third season brought us another episode filled with surrealism and powerful thematic elements.  The themes that bookended Secondo were, once again, forgiveness and betrayal.  Hannibal seems to be dealing with whether or not he can let go of his feelings of betrayal and forgive Will Graham, and is using Dr. Du Maurier as his therapist to work through these emotions.  While Hannibal spends time in therapy, Will is deconstructing Hannibal’s memory palace in order to find a path that will lead to Hannibal.  Jack returned in this episode and was dealing with his feelings as well.  He met Inspector Pazzi and had a very therapeutic talk-it-out session regarding how he feels he betrayed Will and what Hannibal means to both Pazzi and himself.  Everyone seems to be looking inward in this episode, leaving us, the audience, uncertain as to whether or not they will find what they are seeking. Secondo Recap Hannibal & Du Maurier Secondo opens with Hannibal and Dr. Du Maurier having a sort of therapy session discussing Hannibal’s feelings about Will Graham – specifically, Hannibal’s confusion about whether or not to forgive Will for his betrayal.  Bedelia reminds Hannibal that forgiveness requires two people, much like falling in love does.  She also warns him that if he doesn’t resolve his feelings he will get caught. Later, Hannibal and Du Maurier host Professor Sogliato for dinner.  Hannibal serves Punch Romaine, the cocktail served to first class passengers on Titanic during their last meal.  Hannibal’s use of the ice pick to make the cocktail foreshadows they way he later jams said ice pick into Sogliato’s temple.  Bedelia later pulls the ice pick from Sogliato’s head to put him out of his misery, prompting Hannibal to inform her that she technically killed him. During another dinner scene, Hannibal serves Sogliato to two patrons of the Caponni Library.  He tells them they are eating spring lamb.  Later that evening Hannibal helps Bedelia wash her hair and she asks Hannibal to talk about the first spring lamb he ate, which she then implies was his sister Misha. During the last scene of the episode, Hannibal and Du Maurier have another “session” in which they once again discuss forgiveness and betrayal.  Hannibal’s sister Misha comes up in their conversation and it is implied that the reason Hannibal ate Misha may be different in the show then it was in the book (Hannibal Rising).  Du Maurier implies, and Hannibal admits, that the only way he will forgive Will Graham’s betrayal is to eat him.  There is an implication that Misha did something to Hannibal which forced him to eat her. Jack and Pazzi There weren’t many scenes with these two this week and they remained in one location during their scenes together.  Jack arrived and went to the Norman Chapel in Palermo. While there, Pazzi showed him the case file on the Dimmond killing.  They proceeded to have a discussion about Will and Hannibal.  Pazzi expressed his belief that Will sees Hannibal as a god and respects him as one.  Jack explained that he believes that he broke Will and drove him into the arms of Hannibal, who welcomed Will because Will understands and accepts him. Will and Chiyoh Will visits the one place Hannibal can’t go – his childhood home.  It’s implied that there are too many bad memories there for Hannibal to ever return to Lecter castle.  Through a discussion that Will has with Hannibal in his mind, it becomes apparent that Will is trying to deconstruct Hannibal’s memory palace in order to find him. While on the grounds of the Lecter estate, Will discovers Chiyoh, a young Japanese woman who has been keeping an older man as a prisoner in the dungeon.  Chiyoh finds Will in the dungeon and holds him at gunpoint, very reminiscent of how Dr. Du Maurier held Hannibal at gunpoint in the season opener.  Will convinces Chiyoh to put down the gun and they proceed to the house, where they share tea and discuss why she is keeping the man a prisoner. Chiyoh explains to Will over tea that this man is the one who ate Misha, and Hannibal asked her to stay there and keep him prisoner.  She explains that she thought Hannibal was curious as to whether or not she would kill the man.  It appeared that Will was curious about the same thing, since he freed the man despite knowing he would go back and try to kill Chiyoh. Chiyoh proves Will right when the man – who has been pretending to still be locked up – attacks Chiyoh, who retaliates by stabbing him with a chicken bone.  Will and Chiyoh discuss why she killed the man and she explains that Will manipulated her into doing it, just as Hannibal would have.  Chiyoh then agrees to help Will find Hannibal because she no longer has any reason to stay at the Lector estate.  Before they leave, Will gets a little crafty with a broken wine bottle and twigs: he turns the dead man into a sculpture of a firefly and hangs him from the ceiling.  Has Will gone full-on Hannibal? SCP36 – Hannibal S03E02 – “Will’s Existential Struggle” Where do Will Graham’s allegiances lie?  Why is he looking for Hannibal? These are the questions audience had to ask as they watched S03E02 of Hannibal, Primavera.  These questions were made apparent as Will turned to Pazzi, the Italian investigator, while in the catacombs of the Norman Chapel and says, “You don’t know whose side I’m on.”  Hints of Will’s confusion were given to the audience earlier in the episode when he wakes up in the hospital and Abigail tells him after everything she still wants to be with Hannibal.  Later we learned that this was really Will speaking with himself because it was revealed that Abigail did actually die in the season two finale.  Finally in the end the episode is bookended with forgiveness, as Will whispers to Hannibal that he forgives him.  The audience saw Hannibal ask this question of Will again as the last few moments of season two were played to open Primavera. Primavera Recap Primavera opened up with the scene in the Hannibal’s kitchen that ended season two.  The whole gruesome scene was replayed to the chagrin of fannibals around the world, as Twitter was alive with tweets asking Bryan Fuller why he was putting us through this again.  We saw Will stabbed in the gut and Abigail’s neck sliced open once for a second time.  As both of them lay there in a pool of blood black liquid reminiscent of the liquid that engulfed Alana Bloom in the season two finale.  This time it is will engulfed and drowning in Hannibal’s influence calling back the imagery of Dr. Du Maurier drowning in this season’s opening episode.  After Will’s descent into the murky waters that are Hannibal the teacup breaks and comes back to together again.  When it does Will wakes up in the hospital and is greeted but a very much alive Abigail Hobbes. In the hospital Abigail and will made allusions to William James multiverse theory by discussing what would have happened if Will had just left the night Hannibal suggested it instead of waiting until after his dinner with Jack Crawford.  Abigail revealed that in spite of all the events that have taken place she still wants to be with Hannibal and she is mad at Will for lying and not leaving with them. Eight months later Will and Abigail travel to Palermo and visit the Norman Chapel in hope of finding Hannibal.  Will visited often and on one visit he sees the police have roped off the area around the origami heart Hannibal left in the church.  It is during this visit that Will meets Inspector Pazzi, and Italian police officer that knows all about Will’s case from season two.  He also knows all about Hannibal because he believes Hannibal is the Il Mostro of Florence, a killer that 20 years prior murdered people and staged their bodies to resemble the famous Italian painting the Primavera. Will was given time with the body alone in the chapel to do what Will Graham does and the corpse morphed into a stag made of Dimmond’s body.  It was also during this encounter that Abigail showed and discussed with Will the broken heart Hannibal left them in the chapel. In a twist that was not seen coming Abigail’s neck splits open and she began to bleed.  There was a cut to a flashback from the season two finale during which the audience learned that Abigail did actually die when Hannibal cut her throat open and asked for Will’s forgiveness. Pazzi showed up at the end of the flashback to discuss with Will what he has learned from his time at the crime scene.  Will noticed light coming from the catacombs and both him and Pazzi entered in pursuit of Hannibal.  Will warned Pazzi to leave because he couldn’t guarantee his safety.  Hannibal was indeed in the catacombs as the audience saw him hiding in the shadows.  The episode ended with Will whispering his forgiveness to Hannibal. SCP35 – Hannibal – S03E01 – “Hannibal’s Broken Heart” This week Jamie and Jenny spent a lot of time discussing the relationship between Dr. Du Maurier and Hannibal Lecter.  Jamie thinks that Du Maurier is more like Hannibal then she is willing to admit and Jenny thinks that she is Hannibal’s unwilling captive.  There was also discussion about how the season three opener was a pivot from a creepy crime procedural, which Hannibal felt like in its first two seasons, to a show that felt more like an artistic homage to the Thomas Harris novels. Episode Recap Hannibal rode his motorcycle to a party in Paris where he meets Anthony Dimmond (Tom Wisdom) while looking for Dr. Roman Fell. They discussed poetry and Dr. Fell, for whom Dimmond served as a TA for in England. Lecter followed Dr. Fell to his house, killing him and his wife after she walked in on Hannibal eating Fell’s liver.  Flashback #1 Dr. Abel Gideon is seen eating his cooked leg with Lecter, where he commented that Lecter is truly a personification of the Devil.  He asked Lecter to tell him a fairy tale, which begins the current time line of Hannibal and Du Maurier in Florence, Italy. Lecter and Du Maurier are shown as having traveled to Florence, Italy, where they are assuming the identities of Fell and his wife.  While at a gala Sigliato challenges Hannibal’s knowledge of Dante and his ability to be the curator of the Capponi Library. Sigliato ask Hannibal to give a speech at the library’s studiolo to prove himself.  Hannibal graciously accepts. While preparing for this lecture Hannibal runs into Anthony Dimmond who greets him by the name Boris Yakov, the name Hannibal used in Paris.  Hannibal invites Dimmond to dine with him and Du Maurier using his characteristic cannibal catch phrase, “My wife and I would love to have you for dinner.”  Flashback #2 The conversation between Du Maurier and Jack Crawford, from season two, is replayed before we see Du Maurier return to her home that she left in fear for her life. When she entered she found Hannibal taking a shower.  She held Hannibal at gunpoint and asked him questions about Will Graham and the rest of the FBI scoopy gang.  This is when the audience realizes that this is a flashback taking place the same night as the events of the season 2 finale. Hannibal used his charm and manipulation to make Du Maurier feel as if she was always more important to him then the FBI crew and she lowered her gun. Flashback #3 Lecter showed Dr. Abel Gideon the room where he has snails feeding on Abel’s limbs that have been marinated in red wine.  It was also revealed that Hannibal has been feeding the snails acorns, oysters, and sweet wine to enhance their flavor.  It just so happens that Hannibal has been feeding the same things to Dr. Abel Gideon. When Dimmond arrives for dinner he questioned Du Maurier about her meal and commented that she is eating only acorns, oysters, and sweet wine (she is seen twice in the episode buying these items from a local grocer).  He interjected that this was a practice started by the Romans to improve the taste of their livestock.  Hannibal allowed Dimmond to leave the meal unscathed, but not before he invites him to the lecture that Dr. Fell is giving on Saturday at the Studiolo. Flashback #4 Hannibal prepared the snails for Dr. Gideon and him to eat.  Dr. Gideon at this point is doing anything to be perceived as rude by Dr. Lecter.  He banged a utensil on the table, made a snide remark about Will Graham, and dropped the utensil on the floor.  Flashback #5 In this flashback we see Dr. Du Maurier wake up next to a dead man that turns out to be her patient Neal Frank (Zachary Quinto) who was referred to her by Dr. Lecter.  Hannibal arrived and helped her with the clean up putting her in Hannibal’s debt. While Hannibal was giving his speech to the Studiolo Dimmond walked in late and spooked Du Maurier causing her slip out of the lecture.  Once the lecture was over Dimmond confronts Hannibal about his rouse and Hannibal invited him back to his house to discuss how they could be beneficial to each other. Once back at the house Hannibal attacked Dimmond and before he killed him questioned Du Maurier about whether she is observing or participating in Dimmond’s murder.  Hannibal determined through his line of questioning that Du Maurier was in fact participating. The episode ended with Hannibal traveling to Palermo with a trunk.  While on his way there he created a human heart using origami and a picture if Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.  He left the contents of the trunk, Mr. Dimmond’s body twisted into the shape of a human heart, on an easel in the church Hannibal described as the foyer of his memory palace last season, the Norman Chapel. Hannibal S02E12&13 Tome-wan & Mizumono “Hannibal’s Farwell” Tome-wan  Will informed Hannibal that he told Mason Verger of Hannibal’s desire to kill him.  Hannibal admitted to wanting to kill Mason and eat him because he is vulgar and rude.  During a session with Mason Hannibal learned Mason’s motivations for having given a hysterectomy to his sister Margot.  Will suggest that Margot’s best revenge would be to out live him, “Survive him,” in Will’s words. Will meets with Jack to inform him of Hannibal’s desire to kill Mason Verger and that he can manipulate it to happen.  Jack shared his misgivings about this plan because of Will’s mutilation of Randall Tier and how everything might look once they finally do arrest Hannibal.  Jack during this meeting also reveals that the FBI found Dr. Du Maurier.  During a meeting with Jack, Dr. Du Maurier confessed to killing her patient that was once a patient of Hannibal’s.  She explains that she felt there was no other option because of Hannibal’s influence over her.  She also warned Jack that if they think they are going to catch Hannibal it’s because she wants them to think they will arrest him.  She also placed doubt in Jack about Will’s allegiances. Mason Verger mysteriously showed up at Will’s house and invited him into his limousine.  Meanwhile Hannibal was captured by three of Verger’s employees.  When Will arrived at Verger’s barns he found Hannibal tied up and suspended above Verger’s pigpens.  Verger encouraged Will to kill Hannibal but Will instead cut him free and is knocked out.  When will wakes up he finds everyone gone and one if Verger’s employees strung up and half eaten by the pigs. Will made his way home and found Verger in his house feeding his face to Will’s dogs.  Verger is doing this without pain because Hannibal had drugged Verger with this goal in mind.  It was also obvious that Hannibal brought Verge to Will’s home in order to determine where Will’s loyalties lie.  Hannibal left the decision about what to do with Verger up to Will.  Will had too much pity for him to call for his death so Hannibal broke his neck instead. Jack went to see Verger to see if Mason would give Hannibal up but he lied to Jack and said that he fell into the pigpen. Realizing that Hannibal would not be caught killing Mason Verger he suggest that they run away together but before they do Hannibal reveal himself to Jack.  The episode ended with Hannibal agreeing to host one last dinner for Jack. Mizumono  The episode opened with Will speaking to both Hannibal and Jack and declaring his loyalty to both.  There was some amazing camera and editing work done to show the duality of Will in both of these scenes. Will prepared for what he thought was an inevitable fight with Hannibal by going to see Freddie Lounds and asking her to keep Abigail out of whatever she writes about Hannibal in the future.  She asked him if he thinks he will survive Hannibal and Will answered with silence. Will went to see Hannibal to make sure that Hannibal was still going along the plan to reveal himself to Jack.  During this discussion they destroy all of Hannibal’s patient records and they both discuss how they have dealt or would deal with being confined.  Hannibal explains his memory palace to Will and Will explains his stream vision from earlier in the season.  During this meeting Hannibal smells Will and recognizes Freddie Lounds scent. This is when he knew that Will did not kill Freddie Lounds and that Will is still loyal to Jack. Will and Alana met for Alana to share her fears with Will.  She explains what him and Jack are about to do is entrapment and that they could get in a lot of trouble because of Randall Tier.  Alana also shared her disgust with herself for being fooled by Hannibal. During a final meal with Will, Hannibal tested Will by suggested that they leave that night and not tell anyone.  Will pushed Hannibal to go on with the plan to tell Jack and said it would be rude to leave without a goodbye. Kade Purnell confronted Jack about his plan and Jack admits the plan and is put on forced leave.  Alana shared her concerns with Purnell and learns that Jack and Will are going to be charged by the FBI and that Hannibal’s passport was suspended and his house will be searched.  Alana warned Will who in turn warned Hannibal. Jack went to Hannibal’s for dinner as planned and fight broke out.  Jack is gravely wounded and hides in the wine pantry.  Alana showed up and held Hannibal at gunpoint only to learn that Hannibal had previously taken her bullets out of her gun.  Retreating upstairs she soon finds Abigail Hobbes alive and well.  Abigail apologized right before she pushed Alana out the window.  Will arrived in a taxi and found Alana on the ground and called for help.  He made his way to the kitchen and found the pool of blood coming from the pantry.  Will found Abigail and she apologized for doing what Hannibal had asked her to do.  Hannibal then appeared and stabbed Will in the gut.  Hannibal explained that he wanted him, Will, and Abigail to be a little family together.  He explained his sense of betrayal and  forgave Will.  Hannibal then asked Will for his forgiveness before he slashed Abigail’s throat.  Hannibal walked out of the house into a downpour of rain leaving all of them there to die.
