Black Girl, Lost Keys, a See in ADHD Fan Favorite: Rene Brooks
Episode in
See in ADHD
My podcast isn’t about just finding new people to explore the topic of ADHD with. It’s more than that, it’s about creating community, a family.
Occasionally, people ask me, which is the best episode to listen to? But like family, to me, they are all like my babies, I love them all.
Sure, there may be a topic that is best suited for an individual to listen to at any given time due to their unique circumstances, but overall, if you listen to every episode, you begin to feel the familiarity. You begin to feel the family.
And so this week I've brought back a guest who has shared her journey with us through a few episodes. She’s become a dear friend to me, Rene Brooks. I asked her to come and give us an update on how she is doing and what she's up to now. We reflect back on the past year we’ve known each other.
Many of you have asked about Rene, so enjoy this episode.
You can reach out to Rene directly thru email or check out her blog, Black Girl, Lost Keys.

Autism & Other Co-existing Conditions You Probably Don't Know About
Episode in
See in ADHD
Charlene Long is the loving force behind Autism as a Whole. She joins me in this episode to talk about how many of the spectrum conditions like ADHD, like Autism, usually come with co-existing conditions.
In her family’s case the have Criduchat, cancer, and mitochondria disease among others.
This points to the fact that we have physical conditions that accompany psychological ones.
It is, as a whole, a person, a family, and a community are affected.
Charlene is also raising money to help buy the supplements that her hero Charlie needs to provide him with the energy required for daily life.
If you can help, I thank you. Below are links to show support as well as reach out to Charlene directly.

I'm on Your Side: ADHD & Relationships
Episode in
See in ADHD
Rick Green says he's no ADHD expert; however, I question that. After all, isn't an expert someone who knows virtually everything there is to know on a subject? How he came to know just SO much about ADHD is his journey and I'm thrilled he took some time to sit with me and my co-host, Agnes Green, to share so much from epigenics to cognitive dissonance to stories of the experts with whom he's worked.
Rick was recently honored as an inductee of the Order of Ontario. What that means is that his dedication to spreading ADHD awareness has not been in vain. In fact, his body of work has saved countless relationships and probably many lives. How's that for a non-expert?
I encourage you to check out his site, Totally ADD, a place where laughing and learning are side by side like videos on a shelf. Oh, yeah...and there are tons of videos to choose from in the shop! Below is the link to just one of the fabulous one's we dicuss in this episode. There are many others available at TotallyADDshop.com.
The Comprehensive Guide to ADHD - Living With ADHD (Video Download)
Living with ADHD
Illustrates how ADHD can sabotage marriages, families, friendships, and careers. Patrick & Janis McKenna from ADD & Loving It?!, share their struggles and challenges, while Dr. Umesh Jain, Gina Pera and a dozen ADHD experts dismantle the complex web of symptoms to allow you to transform your relationships. This video will especially resonate with everyone who lives or work with someone who has ADHD.

ADHD & Self Esteem
Episode in
See in ADHD
Replay * Alyssa "Otter" Sheldon and I met on Facebook. She joined the See in ADHD FB group and told me of her plans.
In this episode she shares them with all of us while also offering invaluable insight into how you can embrace your ADHD and totally accept yourself as you are even if some see you as odd.
The key word being: ACCEPTANCE.
Accepting the fact that we are all wired differently is a theme in my work and I share Otter's enthusiasm for spreading the word that having ADHD doesn't make you "less than".
She's a great story teller as well as just a great person. I encourage everyone to join in her mission.

How ADHD Medication Changes Things
Episode in
See in ADHD
Sean Wallace read an article of mine, The Process of ADHD. I had shared it on my FB page. His response was so powerful I asked him to come on the show and share it with you. Here is an excerpt from his original post:
"I was diagnosed ADHD the summer before 6th grade. I was prescribed Adderall and I hated taking it, I never ate, my mouth would always be dry, I couldn't sleep and It made it hard to make friends because I was so quite all the time (usually I would be talking up a storm and getting in trouble) I would trick the nurse at school and pretend to take it because I didn't like it that much. The positive side to that was I would go from straight F's to straight A's in a matter of weeks, I would clean my house, be good, I never procrastinated, I was nicer. It worked miracles. Come to find out I was just taking way to high of a dosage..."

Changing the Impact of ADHD
Episode in
See in ADHD
Diane Dempster, is an ADHD Coach and Parent Trainer. Her partner, Elaine Taylor-Klaus, and she, cofound Impact ADHD, an organization dedicated to helping parents help kids.
I was tickled to discover that, like me, she doesn't have ADHD herself but lives with and loves her kids who do. She also shares with me the status of non-ADHD child who grew up with an ADHD parent and she's the first person I've interviewed on the show who doesn't have ADHD.
She's also a wealth of knowledge on parenting kids with ADHD. (Plus, she's fun.)
Listen in on us talking about some of the issues that arise when parents question if their kids are being naughty or if it's just neurological. She's also explains how choice leads to change and how a perspective of strength vs challenge leads you to look beyond any label.

Life After the ADHD Diagnosis
Episode in
See in ADHD
Brett Thornhill is a fellow ADHD Coach whom I met at the 2015 CHADD Conference in New Orleans, Louisianna. I asked him on the show because he's an ispiration and I believe his is a story worth sharing. He was diagnosed later in life and that point of view, while unique for him, is also the story of millions.
He describes some of the feelings that he experienced from the almost grief-like process upon diagnosis to the joy of reinvention. He likes to say that since his diagnosis he has become Brett 2.0
The passion for helping others based on what's he's learned is reflective in his life. He changed careers to become an ADHD Coach, the only one, in fact, in Newfoundland, Canada.

ADHD & Companion Conditions: A Journey of Self-Discovery
Episode in
See in ADHD
As is the case with many people with ADHD, Charley Burt is successful, smart, funny, and compassionate. But she doesn’t just have ADHD. Companion conditions typically co-exist with ADHD, and in Charley’s case, her special genetic make-up includes Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Fibromyalgia, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as well.
In our conversation we also touch on how familial suicide has impacted both of us and fueled our passion to share with others the struggles involved in all forms of mental illness.
You’ll surely enjoy Charley’s warmth and good nature as you listen to her share stories of self-discovery and self-disclosure mindful that these are both still a work in progress. She’s untangling what’s what. Considering that all of her, as she calls them, acronyms, have overlapping symptoms, determining what physical ailment is contributing to which mental issue is a puzzle she’s determined to solve.
In fact, through the encouragement of a geneticist, she is in the process of setting up genetic mutation testing through 23andme! Personally, I can’t wait to find out what more information she’ll find out and share. She’s promised to come back and give us an update but don’t wait until then. For more about her journey go to embracingadultadhd.wordpress.com and subscribe. She writes almost every day something about her ADHD and its effects on her life and relationships.

"Why's the Spatula Behind the Couch?" & Other ADHD Questions
Episode in
See in ADHD
Replay * How do you feel when people ask, "Doesn't everybody have ADHD?" It's a question often considered insulting by people with ADHD; after all, the answer is obviously no and it belittles the diagnosis, insinuating that ADHD isn't real.
But is it always intended to deny ADHD's legitimacy? What if the person asking the question believes it's real because even his own son has it?
In this episode, we explore this topic and talk out loud the process of answering the questions found on the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS-v1.1) Symptom Checklist.
What does it mean if you don't fit neatly into the box of ADHD or non-ADHD? Listen and find out.

Vertical Heterophoria: Exposed in ADHD
Episode in
See in ADHD
In a previous episode, Dr. Cheryl Berger-Israeloff, brought awareness to an affliction that may not be well known, yet, affects between 5 - 10% of the population and is showing up in the ADHD population. It's a type of Binocular Vision Disorder called Vertical Heterophoria. Perhaps the link has to do with the deregulation of another of our body's systems?
Symptoms include dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, imbalance, neck aches, eye pain...the list goes on and many eye doctors don't even know about it.
Be sure and visit Dr. Cheryl, Dr. Kathy, and Dr. Debby at www.nvcofny.com where you'll find more information and a link to a test you can easily take online.
In this episode, after Rene Brooks took the 5 minute cover test, that you can perform on yourself at home, she found Dr. Kathryn Collins in PA.
You too, may be a candidate for special prism glasses, which alleviate all of the symptoms of Vertical Heterophoria without medication!

Scoping Fun, ADHD Style!
Episode in
See in ADHD
Rene Brooks and I were pow-wowing recently about how difficult it can be to work so hard creating structure in your ADHD world, focus on productivity, only to realize that you haven't been having much fun. Unfortunately, you can even try to have fun and accidentally go too far the other way, destroying all of the systems you've worked so hard to create. Where's the balance?
Mind you, I don't believe we actually answered that question but we did have fun talking about it.
Please excuse the sound quality as the seven of us from FB's See in ADHD group attempt to have a discussion in a Zoom Room while livestreaming on Periscope.
How's that for multi-tasking?
Next time, won't you join us? Email me at Jennie@SeeinADHD.com to find ut how you can participate in an upcoming show.
Meanwhile, you are invited to join the gang on FB in our fun closed group See in ADHD, we'd love to meet you.

Updated
