REPOST: Following the announcement by the French government to make birth control free for women up to 25, we discuss the knowledge and use of birth control in Africa and the steps taken by different African governments to promote effective use of contraception by women in Africa. Listen and share your thoughts with us. What more do you think governments can do to promote the knowledge of contraception in Africa to allow women make decisions about their bodies, control population growth and lead to increased resources because rapid population growth affects the quality of life.

In this episode, we look at the different human rights at risk of being infringed by the abolition of abortion.  We also discuss the impact on the woman’s right to life, right to health, possible gender discrimination, and the way forward.  Do you think abortion should be outrightly prohibited or there should be controlled access to it? 

International or cross border sex trade has been called a form of modern slavery because of the way victims are forced into sexual acts. Trafficking is a crime as well as a violation of human rights.  Approximately 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders annually and, of these, 80% are women or girls and 50% are minors. The global sex trade is the fastest growing form of commerce, worth $32 billion annually.  In this episode, we discuss the various forms of sex trafficking, the human rights violations involved and the international efforts that have been put into fighting sex trafficking.

In this episode, we discuss public flogging as a punishment for crimes and how the criminal justice system in many countries is prejudiced against the female gender. The problem with public whipping is the fact that more often than not, the number of strokes can be excessive and the women feel the brunt of the punishment more than the men, including in numerous cases where both the man and the woman were caught in the act but the man basically got a smack on the wrist while the woman got a heavier punishment.

In this episode, we’ll talk about Afghanistan, the presence of the Taliban in Afghanistan and human rights affected as a result of such presence. Some of these human rights include the right to education, freedom from discrimination, right to peaceful assembly, and so on.  Basically, the Taliban, an Islamic fundamentalist group, that ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until the U.S.-led invasion in 2001 have returned to power in Afghanistan 20 years after their expulsion by U.S. troops.  When the Taliban returned, it was feared  that they may impose harsh rules, despite their promises to respect the rights of women and minority communities and provide amnesty for people who supported U.S. efforts.  Now, these fears are becoming a reality as the Taliban have taken actions in line with their brutal rule in the late 1990s. In a flood of decrees issued recently, the Taliban has imposed restrictions on the behaviour, movement, and appearances of residents, particularly those of women and girls.  So, what do you think comes next for Afghanistan?

The French government recently announced that it would make birth control free for all women under 25 from 1st January 2022, thus expanding a scheme that currently targets ladies under 18 years old because surveys show a decline in the use of contraception among certain young women due to financial reasons. For a continent with a large population and very limited development rate, you’d think that contraception would be readily available and leveraged in Africa. But this is not so as about 24% of women of reproductive age have an unmet need for modern contraception and nearly 50% of unmarried women in Nigeria do not have access to modern contraceptives.
