#99 Shine as an Educator – National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Are we equipping our children to have brave conversations? We need to encourage, guide and support the development an understanding of… >> What is kindness? >> What is empathy? >> What language is acceptable around others? Our children need us to role model for them => BUT they also need more then this, they need us to stand up for them, to be the educators they need us to be!! CHALLENGE Have the conversation… The children in your care need to know you will be there for them if needed!! Look for and jump in when opportunities present themselves for teaching. There are some amazing resources that can be used in an early childhood setting > Have You Filled A Bucket Today? : A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Carol McCloud. Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators TOPTIP Be Aware Be aware how you are communicating with others Be aware how you are encouraging your children to communicate with others… There is a high percentage of Bullies that don’t even realise they are bullies, this is true with children and adults. When you understand this statistic, the culture around bullying, the layer of understanding around what is ok and what is NOT, you are more equipped both from a adult and child perspective to change outcomes around bullying. Michelle also speaks about understanding respect, about speaking up and taking action, about making sure we are equipped to have difficult conversations or we find the help that we need to have them. And focus on equipping our precious children with the skills they need to have those difficult conversations as well. #100 Shine As An Educator – My Truth!

Super excited to share this 100 Episode with you. We have almost 20k downloads so it would be awesome to get there with this podcast so if you have a work colleague or friend that needs to hear this be sure to share it with them. Sharing the Shine as an Educator podcast keeps me > Reflecting > Motivated > Invited thought provoking and heart wrenching discussion > Problem solving in a positive, enriching way > Connection – the connections that I have with a lot of you – I truly treasure and know I am a better educator because of. I need to share why, why I know Early Childhood Educators can change lives. Many of you will know a very surface version of my story, where I have shared I was a young Mum in a small town using a FDC Educator, when she decided to leave and there was literally no where for her clients to go… you need to listen to the podcast to get the deeper story! Early Childhood Educators > Can make the difference between some children having the connection they need or not > The sleep they need > The understanding AND with parents > The kind word you say to a parent as they leave may be the only kind word they get all day > The chit chat at the end of the day may be the only chit chat a parent gets to have about their child to anyone So I ask you after listening to my story and all my babble over the last 100 episodes > what sort of educator are you? > what sort of educator do you know you can be? > what impact are you having on those around you? CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Are you being the shining light that is needed, for yourself AND those around you… Some things to think about ?Connection ?Self Care ?Motivation I was deeply saddened this week by a post that said they hated being an educator => REALLY Educators aren’t recognising how important they are… > Prioritising Self Care > Taking steps to NOT be as isolated, no matter the care setting > Recognising your uniqueness => all educators have a unique skill set, a passion that they can share Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators CHALLENGE This week, make a list of ALL the things YOU LOVE about being an educator… It’s time to LOVE being an educator again! This will be a unique list to you => for you => about YOU!! TOP TIP Take a deep breath and recognise yourself as the unique, amazing educator that you are working on becoming. We are all on a journey, yes we really are! We grow – develop – and change as educators I am NOT the same educator I was almost 25 years ago I’m just not I have changed my views on things I have learned things with training and time I use to have a focus around doing things ONCE and RIGHT, there was a right way and a wrong way to do everything I was young and felt the pressure of being judged Now I understand more about knowing myself, doing what feels right and to hell with anyone that wants to judge or pressure me into doing things a certain way or that doesn’t feel right. Yes I play by the rules But I also give myself enough credit to know what feels right Do what works for you… Give yourself enough credit to know YOU are changing lives!! #98 Shine as an Educator – Does Your Communication with Children Build Confidence?

CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Does your communication with Children build confidence? The way we speak to those around us, adults, educators or children, we need it to NOT be controlling, confining or rude. We want it to be positive!! Adults can get into a habit of making statements such as be careful, slow down, watch what you are doing, these statements are NOT helpful and are too general to build confidence. This week I will be really thinking about how I speak with the children. Is how I speak to the children positive, is it extending their understanding, is it helping rather than being controlling or negative? We need to encourage the children to speak kindly to each other as well. This is a beautiful article from Josee at Backwoods Mama https://www.backwoodsmama.com/…/stop-te… Are you creating a level of anxiety and fear by the way you speak to your children? Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators CHALLENGE Stop, Breathe and Reflect… Is what you are about to say helpful, confidence building and positive to the challenge at hand with your children? Josee shares with us some lovely alternatives to share with the children to encourage them to think or to take different actions. “Every time you want to say “Be Careful!” see it as an opportunity to help your child foster greater awareness of their environment and their bodies. Try saying: > Notice how… these rocks are slippery, the log is rotten, that branch is strong.” Josee It is our responsibility to use positive language with our children and Josee has some wonderful statements for you to use. TOP TIP When things trigger you, or upset you, or make you feel icky and not nice, work out why!! Why did this experience feel so icky for me? Is this something you can use and reflect on with your work with the children. How can I use this to reflect on my actions… or our actions with the children… Remember to SHINE AS AN EDUCATOR I would love to hear from you P.S Be sure to download the Reflective Practice Printable and share this podcast with an educator that needs it http://bit.ly/SR-Reflect Links for this Podcast: simplereflect.com.au shineasaneducator.com The post #98 Shine as an Educator – Does Your Communication with Children Build Confidence? appeared first on Simple Reflect Blog.

#97 Shine as an Educator – Do You Use Visual Cues With Your Children?

CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Do you use visual cues with your children? So many different ways to use them… Routines Communication Supporting children making choices Visual cues can be an amazing tool, we as educators are NOT using to support our children with. If children are not coping then they are NOT coping and it is our responsibility as educators to step up and offer a new level of support. Children deserve to have educators that have the tools, they need, to support our precious children. This is a great critical reflection question, do you have children that would benefit from being supported with visual cues? CHALLENGE Look at your Routines, Communication and Choices you are expecting your children to make would they be supported with visual cues? YOU CAN create visual cues! I LOVE making resources some I have are… >> We have pictures up for hand washing, >> We have a pictorial routine game for morning that the children place in order, >> We have picture books of our family to start discussions Share with us what you currently do? AND What could you offer more? Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators TOP TIP If you know there are things that could help your children in care then they are worth investigating!! Investigate different ways to support the children in your care We all know how overwhelming it can be to NOT cope! It is our responsibility as early childhood educators to step up and take the steps, take action and help children in your care that are not coping in whatever way possible. # 96 Shine as an Educator – Is Back to Basics Important For Your Programming?

CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Is Back to Basics important for your programming? I definitely believe YES But some educators are really drawn to complicating it and doing a little extra, every day, which is fabulous as long as you have the basics 100% If we are overwhelmed or not coping then what can you do to begin to cope again. I believe going back to basics is a great start. Are you in the habit or routine of making everything that little bit harder? Do you have habits or routines that really don’t serve you or the children? CHALLENGE Where can you go back to basics? Where can you peel back some of the complexity of what you are doing – even if it is only for a week – peel back some of the extras and make a conscious choice to make what you do this week a little easier. So some areas you may like to Critically Reflect on or discuss with another educator are; Environment Programming Connection to parents Cleaning TOP TIP Don’t try and make your life harder by overcomplicating what we do as educators! Being an Educator can be challenging – of course it can be – there are Children, Parents, Colleagues, our Family’s to navigate Parents want their children to be safe, nurtured and engaged. Our precious children need educators that LOVE being educators and that is what I want for you. Why don’t you try peeling back some layers, un-complicating what you are doing, stepping back to basics and feeling how much better it can feel. # 95 Shine As An Educator – How Are You Breaking Down Your Programming?

CRITICAL REFECTION QUESTION How are you breaking down your programming? Do you break your programming down when you need to move forward? How do you start? How do you improve what you do? How do you save time? What do your children need from you right now, in care? By breaking your programming down, looking at each of the parts of your programming you will be able to work out where to start. One part will feel more difficult, One part will be slower then the rest, this is where to focus on so that you can start to improve, feel more confident and move forward on your journey as an educator. Are you finding your programming easy but struggling with all the Extras? What systems do you have in place – that works – and here is the key! You need to know the way that will work for you. CHALLENGE Look at where you are at… Look at where the other educators around you are at. Go through each of the parts of your programming, go through your systems, look at the children, look at the bigger picture. Now is the time to work at ONE part! Choose what you need to work on so that your programming and educating journey will come with ease and flow. How can you create ease and flow as you go through your journey of being an educator? Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators TOP TIP Be kind to yourself Recognise where you are on your journey, as a FDC or centre based educator. Recognise that there are many parts to programming AND to being an early childhood educator. Work through it in parts so it’s not overwhelming. Being an educator is a challenge and needs to be recognised as one, there is so much to focus on and learn, to say there is not is selling ourselves short. Break your programming down or anything you are stagily with or want to improve and work on one part at a time. I have been an early childhood educator for 23 years and everything has changed so much. We need to continue to grow, develop and evolve as educators if we are going to give our precious children what they need as well. CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Is fun part of your day? How high a priority is fun to you? Does fun keep you motivated? Does fun keep you focused? Does fun help you like what you do? Is fun something you need? Is fun something you push aside and declare not professional or not needed? Do you prioritise fun when you are programming your day? If so why and if not why not? #89 Shine as an Educator – Where to Next for You?

CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Where to next for you? I feel a bit funny asking this but there is 9 weeks left until Christmas The educators that I speak to who have really owned this year with confidence and determination to create days that really worked Have had boundaries Have had a clear vision Have had amazing routines, with energy and passion SO Have you had the boundaries you’ve needed? Have you had a really clear vision of how you want to support children? Have you had the routines with both the children and yourself that have build confidence, energy and passion for learning and what we do? YOUR CHALLENGE Look at your care setting What changes would you of loved to have made this year that you haven’t? You know, at the start of the year when you get enthused about starting something new. >Creating a space that the children will love. >Moving things around >Changing the way you offer something And I will be speaking more about this in the coming weeks What did you wish to change this year that you didn’t? It’s NOT too late There are still 9 weeks to go! Plenty of time for you to make real changes before the close of year. Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators TOP TIP Don’t just give up! NOW that I have reminded you to dig into some of the changes you had planned for this year > take a deep breath > find some strength and determination > connect with someone else that might be feeling the same as you You need to love what you do as an educator… Grab onto that feeling and start creating it, make the changes, improvements, experiences that YOU had planned for 2017 there is still time. #88 Shine as an Educator – Are You Programming from Genuine Interests?

CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Are you programming from genuine interests? So I was asked why an educators children flit from one experience to another? She has spent a lot of time creating beautiful experiences for her children but they still flit around, not engaging well, how does she move forward from here? Let’s look at this If your children are NOT engaging in the experiences you are offering… There are generally a few things going on… #1 The children are overwhelmed or board #2 The experiences are not age appropriate #3 The children don’t understand how to play OR What we are focusing on today # Experiences that support a child’s genuine interests are not being offered. . . CHALLENGE Take time to look at each child in your care!! What specific experiences did you program for them? Did you program #1. Experiences that would not overwhelm and not boar YOUR children #2. Experiences that are age appropriate #3. Build confidence and opportunities to engage ### Were they based on genuine real interests?? So be sure experiences that you plan are from… >>Genuine engaging conversations >>A real interest a child has shown to YOU >>Age appropriate Be sure they are NOT from… >>A fleeting conversation >>A borrowed interest from another child Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators You can see how this can be a slippery down would spiral If you are basing your program on things that are not quite right . . TOP TIP Take time to make sure your program is on point Or get your program back on track Connect with each of your children. Knowing children’s genuine interests needs to be a cornerstone to your program We want to support children in their growth and need to see children succeeding and achieving. It’s a super rewarding feeling to have children in our care succeeding in these ways and that’s what I really want for you Remember to SHINE AS AN EDUCATOR I would love to hear from you P.S Be sure to download the Reflective Practice Printable and share this podcast with an educator that needs it http://bit.ly/SRReflect Links for this Podcast: simplereflect.com.au shineasaneducator.com The post #88 Shine as an Educator – Are You Programming from Genuine Interests? appeared first on Simple Reflect Blog.

#87 Shine as an Educator – Educators Need Curiosity

CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION How do you use curiosity to take the pressure off as an educator? My discussions this week have been with educators that just aren’t coping. How can you introduce the concept of curiosity to better help you cope. As educators we want to do more then cope. We want to love our days, enjoy our days and know what we are offering the children is valuable and meaningful but to do that we have to take the pressure off ourselves and recognise that what we are doing is in who we are. CHALLENGE Set at least three intentions around curiosity. So this could be with your intentional teaching, your experiences with the children or some changes you want to make and we discuss routines, structures and A and R. Curiosity is a mindset tool that I believe will help you as an educator especially if you are not coping in certain areas around being an early childhood educator, in your care setting. Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators TOP TIP Highly strung, not coping educator will of course create highly strung NOT coping children. Such a negative but true statement. Educators need to put into place ways that support and take the pressure off us as educators, while still meeting all the needs of our children, families and community. #86 Shine as an Educator – Are you respectful of other educators choices?

CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Are you respectful of other educators choices? And I mean care settings plain and simple!! Now don’t just say yes and move on >> Do you network with other educator Do you take time to actually know other educators outside your current view point What assumptions are you making around other educators that may NOT be right? CHALLENGE TODAY There is two parts to this >>1. Brainstorm other care settings think of all the other childcare setting you know and think about why you haven’t ventured there? Chat to other educators why do they think they have stayed where they are? >>2. Have a little celebration or love fest for yourself >> Think of all the positive reasons you are in the care setting you are in!! Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators TOP TIP Be confident and certain that you have made the right choice for YOU It’s not about others It’s not about continually questioning who we are or what we are doing Draw a line in the sand and BE YOU Know that YOU are making the right choice for you right NOW… Remember to SHINE AS AN EDUCATOR I would love to hear from you P.S Be sure to download the Reflective Practice Printable and share this podcast with an educator that needs it http://bit.ly/SRReflect Links for this Podcast: simplereflect.com.au shineasaneducator.com The post #86 Shine as an Educator – Are you respectful of other educators choices? appeared first on Simple Reflect Blog.

CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Are you happy as an Educator? Do you enjoy spending time with the children What things do you do each day that make you happy? . . YOUR CHALLENGE TODAY Take a step back, sit somewhere and enjoy being with the children We spoke a while ago about cram packing too much into the children’s days AND I challenged myself this week to do an exercise with the children… AND I will challenge you to do it as well Choose somewhere to sit, >> How long can you be there? >> How will your children react? >> How does it make you feel? Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators I realised that I am proud of my children AND proud of how predictable I am with them… that yes being an educator does make me happy!! Take a step back and think about this challenge, what will you learn about yourself from doing it? . . TOP TIP FOR YOU It’s not always about the push, we are here to encourage the children to be their own people If we are steering them, forcing them to conform all the time, ==>>Are You Happy as an Educator? Read more HERE<<== how are they going to know what makes them happy? CRITICAL REFLECTION QUESTION Is your Reflective practice disruptive? And I thank Anthony Semann for this concept Is your Critical Reflection valuable and making you challenge why you are doing or not doing, what you are doing as an early childhood educator? YOUR CHALLENGE TODAY Dig into this a little deeper!! Look over the questions you have been asking yourself for the last few weeks or even months Have you been using our questions? Have they been real questions? Have they been questions that make or encourage you to question your own practice? Are they a combination of all these and more? Again look at why you are doing what you are doing Are there other ways that would work for you as an educator OR Be more valuable, supporting, engaging for our precious children TOP TIP Know your philosophy around being an educator Know what is important for you to share as an educator Know why you work with the children and what is important to you and the children in your care But don’t be afraid to question To have well thought out Respectful debates With yourself AND others Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators Unless we are questioned sometimes Unless we are encouraged to look at someone else perception or someone else’s view point How do we know we are 100% happy with the way we are going about things?
