Josh Elliott ~ Musician/Songwriter/Poet – Episode #022 – Shotgun Apple Pie

“With the writing on the wall. inside the the bathroom stall, philosophies and lies its all a guess. but the only thing, only thing that made me smile. was the only thing that made any sense. Said, get in get out, get on your life, listen to the music and spill some wine, i think i finally found the secret chord, dancing on the edge of a sword” – Josh Elliot I have never really been keen on summing up life with witty quotes or phrases.  And I sure as hell wont start now.   I believe that it’s completely different for everybody.  You and a friend can go to a concert together, leave together and see an entirely different show.  All I can do is express what my life has meant to me.  Having spent 36 years here one of the most important experiences i have has been building long lasting friendships.  Almost a second family.  Doug and I have been fortunate enough to be part of this this second family, to share living rooms, basements, campfires and stories with 20+ brothers and sisters, and one crazy Uncle.  Who knows how long or even if, we would have had such a huge dinner table were it not for the musical workings of Josh Elliot. I once heard a friend of ours try to describe Josh once.  He said, “he’s kinda of a quiet guy, but if you put a mic in front of him, you wont be able to shut him up”.  I would have to add, “nor would you want to”.  Josh has always made our bodies move and shake through the vibrations of his guitar.  Meanwhile, pulling on our heart strings with his sincere and genuine lyrics.  What I think has truly set him apart, is the energy that he absorbs and pushes back in to the audience.  We were able to take a ride with Josh on the apple cart to hear about his recent project and to see if he ever found the secret chord. Santa Claus – North Pole ~ Episode #021 ~ Shotgun Apple Pie

Christmas means something different to all of us.  For some of us it brings a time to be close with friends and family.  To gather at a common ground and share stories of the past.  To welcome an addition to the clan with snapshots for the future.  Some people enjoy putting up lights around the eaves of their houses and prepare for the dinner of all dinners.  While others are bursting at the seams with anticipation to tear open whatever wrapped squares are under the tree.  To be honest, i love all of it, and more. For one unlucky fella, Christmas includes headaches and ulcers. That’s right.  Santa Claus.  We managed to catch up with the mythical man of mystery a couple of days before the big event to talk about the Elves, his reindeer, and Mrs. Claus.  Most importantly we delve into the toll it as taken on his mind and body to strap in to that sleigh every year to deliver joy and happiness to the world. It turns out that there has been some friction up in the North Pole.  As of recent years jolly ole Saint Nick has felt a little resentful.  From a dissolved relationship with Rudolph to broken sleigh after broken sleigh Santa is feeling frustrated.  Not to mention having to read every insane letter from every insane child in the world.  It changes a person.  But Doug was able to really corral this bowl of jelly for what I think is one of the best interviews thus far. Mike Lind ~ Driftless Organics – Episode #018 – Shotgun Apple Pie

We all have talent. Whether we know it or not.  I get that some of us can’t sing like the blue jay’s in the morning, or play guitar like SRV on Austin City Limits.  There is talent in all of us though.  I would prefer to think that our talent takes time to shine, like a seed.  With time, and a little bit of hard work, you can plant a seed.  That seed may be an idea.  That seed may be a thought.  That seed may be a musical chord.  When you sit back and watch your seed grow, that my friend is patience.  In my opinion there is no greater talent than patience. We caught time with Mike Lind over at Driftless Organics, where he talked with us about the importance of eating healthy, and supporting your local growers. CSA. Anima ~ Episode #017 – Shotgun Apple Pie

I have been thinking a lot lately about the past, present and future.  What has happened, what is happening and what will happen.  One of these things is out of our reach of control written in text books for us to memorize, while another is trying to sneak out undetected like a bandit in the night, fleeting.  Which leaves us with the third tucked away in an old trusty suitcase, or stashed neatly in the back of a sock drawer.  This being the future.  If the future were an object that we could hold I would bet that a large number of us would treat it like a new outfit, only to be worn on special occasions.  Maybe that fine china that only gets brought out on holidays.  If you were to ask Raina & Jaia from the band Anima I think you would find that they have worn holes in the outfit and the sink is full of dirty dishes.  These two singer/songwriters and life long friends have been livin”.  That’s L-I-V-I-N.  They have decided to keep that shit out and use it everyday.  I tell ya what, with young adults like these two in the world, our future is looking bright. (the ship used for their voyage out west) This episode was a lot of fun to do.  We got to sit and talk with Anima about their friendship, playing music to how exactly they decided to journey out into the unknown.  These two are as bubbly and energetic as they are talented.  Oh no, don’t let their youth and demeanor fool you. They got chops.  They bring lyrics and harmonies that rival Simon & Garfunkel.  Yeah, i said that. Having been friends since kindergarten, Raina and Jaia have a special bond that not many people get to share with another person.  The best part about their bond is that you can hear it in their music.  Almost like their are sharing it with us through perfectly timed ques and hypnotizing melodies.  With their eyes on booking more shows and traveling more, I am really excited to see where they go. Shane Mauss ~ Stand-up Comedian/Podcaster – Episode #016 – Shotgun Apple Pie

This adventure we are all on called, “life”, is a very strange one.  It seems that with everyday that passes we are given tasks that challenge our abilities, people that test our patience and are forced to make choices that appear even more difficult than the day before.  That is how most people go about their time on this planet.  Day in and day out, and for what?  Comfort?  That doesn’t sound very comfortable to me.  Security?  Give me a break, nick a decimal point on your taxes, and kiss your house good bye.  We make our decisions, finish the cigarette and go to bed.  Only to wake up the next morning to repeat it all over again.  I believe it’s the doses of reality, obscurity, common sense and plain ole tom folery that keeps our trains on their tracks.  This is where our guest Shane Mauss has found his niche.  Making people laugh, or should i say, helping us find the funny in our everyday lives. Along with his comedic albums, “Jokes To Make My Parents Proud”, “Mating Season” and “My Big Break”, Shane hosts a weekly podcast entitled, “Here We Are”.  We talk with Shane about his preparation and delivery on stage as well as to what led him to start a science based podcast.  I found Shane to be a very interested and humble person who is just searching for the answer to the same questions as the rest of us.   What are we doing here? An Apple A Day, Keeps The Doctor Away – Episode #015 – Shotgun Apple Pie

We hope that everyone had a safe and fun July 4th.  All fingers intact?  Great!  I chose this year to not participate in any lighting of fireworks due to my Jason Pierre-Paul like stupidity last year.  40+ stitches later, I have learned a valuable lesson.  After a bit of feedback from one of our past guests and loyal listeners we decided to devote episode #015 to a solosode.  Doug and I basically catch up on some personal current events as well as discuss some of the difficulties in parenting.  We were able to sample in some tunes from my brother Nate Schultz as well as some stuff from my new favorite electric bass player Jaco Pastorious.  Hope you enjoy the show. Doug has finished his Stand-up Paddle Board My brother Nate’s musical meld “Rage Against the Buffalo” Remember “Ding Dong Ditch”, or “Johnny Knocking”?  Me to, just don’t get caught! Michael Phillip ~ Third Eye Drops – Episode #014 – Shotgun Apple Pie

From the day we were born we have always enlisted the help of others.  It was our parents that helped us learn to walk.  It was our teachers that honed our reading and math skills.  It was even an uncle that took us fishing.  We are learning things everyday from the people around us.  I think that is one of the greatest things about being alive.  This sharing of knowledge and perspective has made life very exciting.   To the point where we are constantly growing.  Changing.  Learning.  There is not a person alive that got to where they are now entirely on their own.  If you think you have, you are mistaken.  We are all neighbors, and once in awhile we all need a cup of sugar. Michael Phillip is the well read, well spoken founder and host of his newest show, Third Eye Drops.  Third Eye Drops is a podcast that captures the conversation of the consciousness.  His guests range from comedians to cage fighters to mathematicians to a Tibetan Buddhist nun.  Although Third Eye Drops seems young with 15 episodes, Michael is no rookie, he has over 100 episodes under his belt with a previous show, Midwest Real We were fortunate to have Michael on as a guest.  He let us pick his brain a little on the does and don’ts of podcasting, which was a real big help.  We discuss psychedelics and the responsibility that comes with them.  This show was a lot of fun.  Sometimes it is nice to not be the only ones asking the questions. Gregg “Cheech” Hall – Episode #013 – Shotgun Apple Pie

Not everybody has it in them to follow their dream to the very end.  That long road is not meant for the weak of heart, nor the faint of mind.  For every artist that has been able to carve a career out of their dream, there are 10 stranded by the wayside.  It takes a combination of strength, courage and a lot of luck.  I would have to say that it takes a body awhile to understand that the road doesn’t stop until you do.  There is no end to what you can accomplish.  Now if you ask “Cheech”, he will tell you that the trip is worth every mile… Cheech has been a staple in the LaCrosse music scene for over 15 years.  Whether you went to see his open shows down at Del’s Bar, or caught him shredding a stage with good friend Paul Matushek, he has never changed his laid back disposition.  If you have not yet gone to see Cheech live, then I suggest you do it immediately, for a growing road schedule and production company (Deece Productions)  might be taking him away from his roots more often. In this episode our good pal Cheech was able to sit down and discuss the past, present and future.  We talk about some of the bands that he and his friends have been able to put together over the years.  Some of which are still performing today.  We dig into what Deece Productions is, and how amazing it is to get to pay homage to Rock-n-Roll icons of the 20th century.  We touch on what performing with Nicholas David has been like, and what’s laying in the cards for him. Talented musician, entrepreneur and visionary, I have a feeling we will be seeing much more from Mr. Gregg “Cheech” Hall.  I’m pretty sure he filled up his tanks before hitting that long road. Justin Bailey ~ Iron Hide Designs – Episode # 012 – Shotgun Apple Pie

It is difficult for some people to find out what makes them happy.  Even when we find that thing that brings us pure joy, it tends to become difficult to map out the time to do it.  We have become children of the “ole 9 to 5 keeps you alive”.  Letting it tell us what to do, like an annoyed parent.  When we were kids, everyone said, “if you work real hard you can become whatever you want, even an astronaut”.  Justin Bailey did just that!  Traveling through space, powered by ambition and drive, he has found his pure joy.  Creating. Justin is an artist of many mediums.  Starting out in Phoenix, AZ (via LaCrosse, WI.) with urban art, he has allowed his talent to mutate through his fingertips.  After landing his shuttle down on the coast of Oregon, I was able to watch him hone his skills and grow as a creator.  From canvas to crystals and now metal work, he never stops!  Justin said goodbye to the “ole 9 to 5” a long time a go.  He is now in perpetual beast mode.  Driving for perfection from sun up to sun down.  We were very lucky to catch him taking a break, so as he could share his experiences. Justin did this little gem for a traveling couple who set out to help feed hikers. Refueling the Love Batteries at Burning Man.   Some Grinding. Sacred Geometry. Crystal Work. Furniture. Canvas. Shotgun Apple Pie would like to thank Justin for lending us these images of his work.  All images you have seen on the page thus far are the works of Justin Bailey.  He has been an inspiration to watch grow as an artist, and we cant wait to see what he comes up with next. Iron Hide Design is the company that Justin and his girlfriend Michelle Slaven have started for themselves.  Michelle is a skilled leather worker, and together they have presented some fabulous pieces. David Krump ~ Renaissance Man – Episode #011 – Shotgun Apple Pie

Some people might say that we are the time we waste.  Other people might say that we are the time we made use of.  There are a lot of us out there that have unfinished projects on the shelf, and there are a lot of us who haven’t even started one.  When it comes to David Krump, I think time is irrelevant and he owns no shelves.  He does, however, have a fire burning deep in his being, which is where he places all of his irons.  Episode #011 is by far the longest one we’ve done, and it could have been even longer.  David was such an easy guest to talk with.  His range of interests are rivaled by few, which made this such a great interview.  Whether it’s representing LaCrosse, Wisconsin’s 6th district on city council, launching his own independent brewery or even venturing into virtual reality, he still found time to sit down with us. Intro:  – Neil Young’s Ohio May 4, 1970         The Kent St. Massacre was where National Guard soldiers shot and killed 4 students, wounding 9 others while protesting the Cambodian Campaign during the Vietnam War. 67 rounds were spent over a period of 13 seconds. Some victims were just passersby. The Shootings were deemed justified, but none of the families saw justice, in any means.  Once Neil Young heard the news he ran up into the woods and cried, then wrote “Ohio” in about 10 minutes.                            Danesiah Neal, a 13 year old 8th grader, was arrested and threatened with felony charges (counterfeiting) after using a $2 bill to pay for lunch.  Nobody knew what a two dollar bill was.  Not the lunch person, not the school administrators and not the police.  No apology has been issued by the school nor police, so let’s help her get it.  -McAuliffe Middle School (281) 634-3360 -Principal, Mary Brewster, Mary.Brewster@fortbendisd.com -8th Grade Principal, James Kirkpatrick, James.Kirkpatrick@fortbendisd.com   Check us out at our Facebook Group, Shotgun Apple Pie Group – We are open to any Comments and/or Suggestions. – Maybe an idea for a future guest? His writing appears in numerous journals and magazines. Two of his plays have been staged. 5,000 Pounds, which was filmed by Wisconsin Public Television, and Predator: The Musical co-written with Will Bulka and William Stobb, which ran consecutives summers in Chicago at Roundhouse Theater and 773.           One topic that I am sure made Doug salivate was David’s brewery.  To be up and running very soon, David will be brewing his own beer with his own hops. Fantastic!!! Virtual Reality has been around for awhile, but the technology has never really been there.  In the world we live in today, the technology has evolved.  Entertainment has always been the focus, but aren’t there more helpful uses for it?  David is a partner in and serves as director of narrative development for a soon to launch Virtual Reality tech firm headquarted in Chicago, with offices in LA and Kansas City.  They have finished their first investment round and are now in the R&D and demo and modeling phase.  Without revealing too much, David was kind enough to share his newest endeavor. “Soak It In Cider” – Episode # 010 – Shotgun Apple Pie

For our 10th episode we decided to talk to ourselves in what we like to call, our SoloSode.  Here we discuss some serious topics like the importance of setting goals, dinner time rituals and the death of a legend.  We were also able to share some music from an upcoming talent.  I personally really like these shows cause they come with a certain kind of freedom.  Like walking around your yard in your leather vest with no shirt on under it.  You don’t do it all the time, but when you do, it feels really good.  Episode #10 is a big step for us.  They say that it is monumental, as in, if you can make it to ten, then you have a shot at making it to 100.  We really appreciate all of the listeners who have traveled down the road of trial and error with us, and we promise to keep working hard to publish quality shows.  Now as you yourself are traveling down your own road of trial and error, if you see a shirtless man in a leather vest standing blankly in his yard, just wave… Intro: Check us out at our Facebook Group, Shotgun Apple Pie Group           – We are open to any Comments and/or Suggestions.           – Maybe an idea for a future guest? Andrew Hughes from TUGG – Episode #008 – Shotgun Apple Pie

As some of us are getting older with every hour of missed sleep, we keep up the fight promised to our young ones the day they were born.  And as some of us are getting younger with every attempt at something new, we are conquering that which scares us the most.  As some of us have stayed the same age with every drop of the needle on that old vinyl, or by pushing in that mix tape that carries all of our songs, we maintain the promise we made to all those friends.  Somewhere in the balance of all three, you will find Andrew Hughes sipping a home brew and trying out a new guitar riff that has been playing in his head.  But don’t worry, he has been saving a spot and a cold one just for you. Intro: Mikey Fat from Episode #007 has become our new Audio Engineer!           –Mikey Fat-Universal Sounds Shotgun Apple Pie as included an Amazon.com portal for all you purchasing pleasures.           -This will result in a small kickback from Amazon for every item bought.           -Do your online shopping via Shotgun Apple Pie and Mikey Fat can get paid! Doug’s Books.           –On Amazon Click Here Interview:           From Jackson, Michigan and just about everywhere else, Andy is a singer and guitarist from the Rock/Reggae group TUGG.  He, his band mates and loyal fans have been keeping the sounds of southern California alive in LaCrosse, Wisconsin for nearly 15 years.  With his wife and two daughters by his side Andy has had a terrific experience keeping smiles on the faces of the community that he obviously loves very much.           In Shotgun Apple Pie tradition we were able to get our sticky little applesauced fingers on a couple of tracks from the vast library of TUGG originals.  The first song we got is “Moonlight” off of their 2012 EP “Homebrew”.  Moonlight is a very fun song to just get down to, and the video only perpetuates that.  Video: “Moonlight”.  The second tune we found for you is, “Don’t Go Downtown” from the 2014 “Not Folking Around” album.  Perhaps an ode to Andy’s punk days?  Now there is another version out there, we have the latter one. Video: “Don’t Go Downtown”           After speaking with Andy, it was easy to tell that he is very humble as well as enthusiastic.  Although he will probably never admit it, TUGG has been one of the thriving forces that has helped shape the LaCrosse music scene into what it is today.  Whether you know him or not, after talking with Andy, a person can’t help but feel as if they have been talking with an old friend. Mikey Fat and his Universal Sounds – Episode #007 – Shotgun Apple Pie

“The James Bond Episode”           After a nice long weekend spent with family, Doug and I arose.  Many eggs were hidden, many eggs found.  Along our travel we found ourselves one of the “good eggs”.  He was barefoot in the woods, wandering towards the music.  He was hungry.  Hungry and eager.  Eager to get his career started in the business, and carve his name into the spiraling tree of music.  His name is Fat, Mikey Fat. Intro: *So i asked our close friend Cory to help us promote the podcast. And this is a product of his enthusiasm.            -he messaged Joe Rogan *Doug is an ordained minister           -Does anybody hear wedding bells? *Saw Wigglestick perform @ the dirty hippie party           -Josh Elliott will soon be a Guest *Easter and Doug’s perspective *When you write, do you ever find yourself stuck on a word, a new word?           -do you ever find yourself repeating a newly learned word? Interview:          Shotgun Apple Pie was able to connect with a young but talented Mikey Fat.  If I was to put it simply Mikey loves music and everything to do with music.  He currently resides in Wisconsin’s music capital, Madison, this is where Mikey Fat mixed his EP, Universal Sounds, laying down his own instrumentals (playing guitar, bass and keys).  He is a recent graduate of Madison Media Institute (MMI) where he received an Associates Degree in Audio Engineering and Music Technology.           I have got to hand it to him, this guy is something else.  He exudes positivity.  This you can hear through a couple of the tracks we were able to play for you, and even a bonus track that he finished mixing after our interview.  Now I know what you are thinking, how could you fit the bonus track on to the audio?  Well i will tell you how.  This music ninja mixed his own episode.  That’s right, we handed him the reins, he actually mixed all the audio you are about to hear.  Like I was saying, the guy really likes music.           One of the things that we really wanted to focus on a little bit was Mikey’s love for festivals.  Mikey Fat and his brother Kevin have blazed a trail from down in Arkansas all the way up to Wisconsin.  Seeing some of America’s biggest acts along the way.  With Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) being one of Mikey’s big influences he stil wont turn away from just an all around fun show.  Which is why we asked him to come back on during the fest season to head up a segment devoted primarily to music festivals.           Universal Sounds is going to be an album you are going to want to dance to.  Either with a friend or like me, by yourself.  Other than the hypnotic melodies the best part about this album is that it is completely FREE !!!  You can find “Journey to the Universe” and “Animals in the Kitchen” along with the rest of the songs on this 6 track EP at Mikey Fat’s link below. But for now, you can only find the bonus track at Shotgun Apple Pie. “Shut Your Pie Hole” – Episode #006 – Shotgun Apple Pie

And Here We Go Again           Here at Shotgun Apple Pie we took this opportunity to talk to ourselves.  We find out the depths of Doug’s creativity and how high the waters reach on our own responsibilities.  I (Matt) also kind of used this show to clean out my notebook of random thoughts.  Where did Santa go?  I hit Doug with some weird questions and he rose formidably.  We like to keep the awkwardness at a high.           Enjoy the show, and if you like.  Please Share! Derek Ramnarace From “Old Soul Society” – Episode #005 – Shotgun Apple Pie

Wisconsin’s own, singer/songwriter Derek Ramnarace  Recording “The Farmhouse Sessions”, outside rural Wonewoc, Wi. The debut album for Old Soul Society           We tried to keep it light in this episode for our old friend Derek.  Who has been working endlessly with his band to print, promote and perform their new works, “The Farmhouse Sessions”.  It was a bit serendipitous for me (Matt) to find out that they recorded this album roughly 5 miles from where my brothers and I all grew up.  Having played and pretended as a kid in nearly the same woods these recordings were made, a smile stretches across my now bearded face.  I can imagine just how much fun this was to do. Intro: Driving Miss. Norma   https://www.facebook.com/DrivingMissNorma/?fref=ts                                                                                             -A 90 year old woman who isn’t afraid to live. Doug and I discuss the formalities behind a proper head nod.                                                                                                                                         -Who’s down for a left-sided hug? Interview:           Doug and I were able to record for the first time together in the same room.  I was very excited for this for 2 reasons.  1.  I just missed Doug’s lovely face.  2.  I was able to have my 16 year old daughter Laney listen in and observe the session.            Derek was able to share with us the motivations behind a couple of tracks on the album. “Talkin’ In My Sleep”, and “Hurricane Heart” which we were able to play for you.  We touched a bit on addiction along with Derek’s 2 years of sobriety.  I am sure you will be able to hear a note of both in these songs.           All around, this was a really fun show to do.  I ask Derek why he prefers playing barefoot and was able to share a rather funny anecdote about the bassist Andrew Steeno.  We find out a little bit about guitar plugs and what the preferred use of them is.  I ask both Doug and Derek who their first concert was but neither one was able to divulge.  I am left with no other option than to assume that it was “the new kids on the block” and that they are both ashamed.            In all seriousness I have no doubt that our listeners and fans of OSS will have no trouble at all listening to this album from start to finish. With bringing in the keyboard and violin, Steeno’s rolling beats on bass, Ben’s steady hands on drums and Derek’s vocals coming from the depths of below.  You’ll probably start it back over and listen to it again. Dreams, Belief & Addiction – Episode #4 – Shotgun Apple Pie Podcast

Okay folks this one is a little different. This is just Matt and Doug talking about things. It gets pretty deep and very heavy at points. It dives into the depths of addiction and touches on some pretty personal subjects.
