Sound Effects Podcast

Today’s show is kicking it with a mix of roughly 99 free sound effects from all of the previous episodes here on the Sound Effects Podcast. Episode 24 is a sampling of sorts from the VAST array of field recordings and on the ground sounds, urban edge audio, and SFX from random encounters of just about anything that came in contact with my microphone. Yes I carry my microphone and recorder everywhere! All of the folly sound effects, cool sound clips, awesome audio field recordings, vocal samples, and heavily processed loops boil down to one thing.. 99 sounds that make for a smooth fast paced show for episode 24 of today’s podcast. Join us today as we countdown the last moments on New Years Eve 2000 celebrating the dawn of a new year and the new century by recording free fireworks sounds! In Podcast 22 we turn back the hands of time to New Years Eve 2000 with a rare glimpse from a city with a sound clip filled with all of the joy, anticipation, awe, raw ambiance, and fireworks as this special night unfolded.. Did I mention very loud fireworks sounds? You could hear huge fireworks, tiny firecrackers, and hissing sparklers both near and far! Yes as a sound designer even back then I was fortunate enough to have recorded this explosive night sky as the new year welcomed everyone with electric excitement! LOTS of fireworks as the night sky is lit up with the sound of BOOM and every color you can imagine! The streets erupted with a sea of people joining in celebration as the crowd joyfully said Happy New Year among the distant sound of ship horns in the harbor!! The night started off with a BANG as the sky lit up with every car alarm within a 10 block radius joined in celebration at the dawn of a new year. People lit firecrackers and danced around with brightly colored hissing sparklers. Sometimes we forget that this time of year is not only about welcoming the new year but also a time of reflection. The start of a new year always presents a new canvas and the dawn of a new day because you can do anything you want.. you can make the next year even better than the last.. you can record more sound effects too Parental guidance is suggested for today’s show because of a couple of instances of strong language. If your a regular listener you know that this is very rare. After thinking on it a bit I left the fireworks sound clip because I felt it created an awesome ambiance and backdrop to a very special night. I am grateful to be able to share with you guys.. Tis the season to be merry and to Download Free Christmas sound effects with today’s holiday special show 21 for all the listeners of the podcast. SFX Ninja is giving the gift of free Christmas, Xmas, and Holiday sound effects along with thanks. MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all the pod-people listening to today’s show! First we start by recording the holiday Xmas sounds while opening and tearing wrapping paper on a present. These free unwrapping gift sounds were recorded last year about this time. Second we record two different metal bells as they avoid being tackled by the cat! My friend and his wife were gracious enough to invite me over this Christmas day recording a magical moment in life that comes once a year as their kids found surprises under the tree.. Join us today as we head out on the road in my car recording the Sound Effects Podcast live while sharing my thoughts about the show inspired from a dream I had the other night about The Tree of Life. This is a very special podcast episode with a few entertaining interruptions.. anytime the show is recorded live funny is bound to happen with life’s randomness Its been a while and its time to get this show on the road because you guys deserve the very best in SFX and as a very special token of my appreciation I am planning some big contests and giveaways for 2015 along with a lot more for 2015!! The sound quality might not be the norm but the funny moments and raw insight into the Past, Present, and Future growing forward with the Sound Effects Podcast make today’s episode worth a listen. What does dreaming about a tree or The Tree of Life have to do with the Sound Effects Podcast? A lot of times they say when we dream it is our subconscious working overtime on things in our waking life.. and because I work with and create free sound effects for you guys as the SFX Ninja the podcast and the recent site overhaul was heavily on my mind. The dream realm had a number of symbolic references and meanings still yet to interpreted but this one about the Tree of Life stood out. After a quick search the web brought up a wide array of links but most all of them pointed toward a tree in general. Even though there were no amazing crazy funny SFX or wow moments the significance of the tree in relation to the fact that a lot of my waking energy and time was going to gearing the Sound Effects Podcast, more new high quality SFX, and website up for re-launch was enlightening because I knew my subconscious was kicked into overdrive. Upon waking up the conscious mind was able to take the main point(s) of the dream world and in this case at the base root of it all was.. no pun intended.. wait for it.. a tree. A tree’s roots represent the past, the trunk that of the present, and the trees branches are representative of the future. So all of that being said I believe this was tying into all of the time and effort I have been putting into examining the past, present state of, and future direction of the podcast and free sound effects from each show for you guys going forward. If your a long time follower of the show or a big fan of the free sound effects here you may have noticed many recent updates. A major overhaul of the site has indeed been taking place. This includes all of the links, updating images for episodes that had none, a general redesign of the site logos colors etc, and taking a very good long hard look at the free Sound Effects (file sizes, projected number of sounds, length of the free audio clips, & audio quality) offered on the free SFX page. To sum it up the SFX Ninja has been working a LOT on critically analyzing the past, present, and future direction of the podcast. My goal is to make this the best free sound effects podcast show online along with the best free and premium resources for all of you sound designers just starting out as well as those of you that are seeking high quality sound effects for your videos, podcast intro music & sound effects, and to maintain a high level of absolute solid fun and entertainment on a regular basis. Addressing the present state of the podcast and the foundation of free sounds for you guys before moving forward. Temporary podfading is what happened and this is what I am trying to avoid in the future. A lot of podcasts out there do this sooner or later but they say as long as you get back up no mater what it is you are doing your still in the game! The time is now to begin again for more free sound effects so you can continue to sharpen your skills as a SFX Ninja! Join us today for a special featured synth artist and musician interview with Kon Karne about his music, new album Karpe Noktem, and his recent experience with Kickstarter. Today the Sound Effects Podcast kicks the year off right interviewing a great electronic musician and artist Lucas also known as Kon Karne. With his well crafted unique depth of authentic 80’s synth sound similar to that of John Carpenter’s earlier works, Kon Karne’s music grabs you with a well balanced dimension of a futures edge like Tron. As I plugged in the ear buds and hit the play button Kon Karne’s music made me think of the 80’s synth pop and the wild wild hair adorned by MTV generation DJs and the pioneers of electronic music. These same musicians would evolve the electronic music scene morphing into dance, trance, house, rave, and all of the modern spinoffs of DNB and dubstep. Lucas aka Kon Karne is an artist with a strong grasp of classical music and is able to tap into his roots of jazz while still bringing that classic funk of the 80’s synth sound of which conjure up fond memories. Take a listen as Lucas takes time to share some of his journey from early beginnings to his new album Karpe Noktem on Kickstarter. Enjoy one of his tracks “Never Hold Back” played during the show and listen how he incorporates the sound effects of a fierce thunderstorm with lightning strikes. From the interview: “Kon Karne’s music is like sitting in a Napolian Dynamite lime green chair watching Tron through NEON hot pink MTV sunglasses”! His subtle blend of guitar pedal combinations and tweaking the filters down on the Tron kind of audio makes for a really good listing experience. Taking the time to record some of his tracks down to oldschool Walkman cassette tapes (for example )..  AND THEN bringing the audio back to the future for modern computer based digital mastering truly speaks for Kon Karne’s attention to detail and authenticity as an artist. I am a huge fan of the Tron soundtrack, lightening sound effects, and cool electronic music in general so as I listened to DJ Kon Karne I could hear every 80’s soft synth and arpeggio loop with appreciation. I woke up yesterday morning to birds chirping and bird sounds just outside the front door so I grabbed the microphone to recorded some sound effects. Awakening to a mild drizzle from an early morning rain gave way to the sound effects of small birds chirping as I stretched to take on the day. Recording natures wild life sounds no matter how small make for some cool audio clips anytime you can catch them. Yes this is a suburban cookie cutter jungle filled with concrete bricks, vinyl siding, and scattered picket fences but nature’s bird chirping sound effects are always a welcome breath of fresh air! If your wondering how to record bird sounds then read on and listen to today’s podcast! Walking toward the kitchen and the bird sounds got louder. The little birds were chirping like crazy making a lot of sound effects! As I looked outside the window you could see that they had taken shelter from the rain in a bush just outside the door. There must have been a dozen of them all chirping away making some cool bird songs and sounds. As if you had to be in the know with an invite only to an exclusive club “Chirp Town” was right outside the window and the DJ (or um.. BlueJ) was spinning all the hits: Bird Chirp Sounds, Birds Chirping Sounds, Chirping Birds Sound Effects, Bird Tweet Audio, Bird Sound Effects, oh and the ever popular Rocking Robin tweet tweet! “It was groovy man” lol Learning how to record bird sound effects is easy and any sound designer can do it. Any time your recording nature or animal sounds your stepping into the wild so to speak. Aside from learning the absolute basics of how to record bird sounds there is one other critically important element. Critical thinking skills and your brain! Consider yourself lucky if nature’s birds land in front of your microphone right when you hit the record button. It does happen though In order to make professionally recorded bird sounds it takes patience and critical thinking skills. Medium distant bird calls are easy but if your going to record clean clear bird sound effects minus the over abundant amount of common background noise then use your brain. Using your critical thinking skills is where the art of sound design comes into play and brings the bird sounds to you! The question of how to record bird sounds can be challenging if your working with distant birds or a lot of ambient noise. When learning how to record bird sounds ask yourself a couple of questions: Where would be the best place to put my microphone and at what angle to get the best bird sound effects? When is the best time to catch birds sound effects? Could you set the recorder and microphone in place for an extended time and possibly put out some bird seed for example? Whats the weather like or will it be windy? – wind can ruin awesome bird sound effects fast! Bird sounds are good to have in your animal sound effects library because they are common sounds. This is important to keep in your collection because when common sounds or even uncommon sound effects are needed then chances are your all set to begin production instead of wasting valuable project time scouring the web. Thunderstorm sound effects are excellent for setting a mood in all kinds of media, but recording the illusive great lightning strikes and thunderstorm sounds can be a challenge. All of these elements: thunderstorm, sound effects, rain, recording, how to, and a few other variables can be challenging to work with when you first start out collecting audio fx.. timing is a big one! Any time a good thunderstorm rolls through awesome sound effects and plenty of rain are sure to follow. If you record nature, rain, or lightning / thunder sounds you know just how hard it can be to catch a good fierce thunderstorm. They say you have to be in the right place at the right time! The opportunity had come and a fierce thunderstorm was roaring my way. I grabbed my microphone to get some good thunderstorm audio no matter what! I decided to try something different this weekend. Today’s how to recording thunderstorm sounds LIVE in my back yard for today’s podcast show – Episode 12 – turned out to be great timing with microphone in hand! The right time to record came late on a Saturday afternoon when I started hearing thunderstorm sounds and a little bit of rain on the roof. Heading out to the garage with the door open turned out to be the perfect spot to catch a thunderstorm sound effect or FEW!! It turned out to be quite a show as the sky lit up, shimmering rain drops hit the ground, and thunder sounds cracked overhead. The lightning strikes hit from all around so this turned out to be an awesome storm for recording. A fierce thunderstorm is always cool and adding even a little bit of this awesome audio can have a strong impact on any listener. Just the right finishing touches on a fresh track with a beautifully recorded thunderstorm fx or two really heighten your senses. Its funny how a beautifully recorded thunder storm and sound effects can give you time to think. As I enjoyed natures fury this fine stormy day from the comfort of a nice dry spot in the garage I remembered a few stories from my past. Join us as I share some of these stories. Mother natures light show seemed to strangely play in tune along with the sound effects right on cue as I shared the stories. DJs, electronic musicians, and aspiring artists often have a few things in common but in the world of the sound effects makers the musical side is often left out. I recently discovered a site called looperman.com where the stage has been set for new talent to to hear and be heard. Musicians post their tracks, loops / sound effects, and collaboration requests plus have access to a wealth of knowledge on the forums. The talented tracks being produced by these DJs and artists is really impressive! The mainstream music industry doesn’t have a clue.. Weather your music has organic sound effects, well crafted layers of processed musical effects, or a massive numbers of loops – talent is required to produce a great track! The artists and talent on looperman are definitely worth a listen. Most of us have heard of Sound Cloud but when surfing the net a couple of weeks ago the music by the creative minds and artists on looperman really surprised me. As a musician training your brain and ears to spot what others miss when working with sound effects is where the art in artist comes in. The music heard in today’s podcast really nailed it! Episode 11 of the Sound Effects Podcast takes you on a ride to looperman with some of the very cool and creative musical landscapes by way of the ear as the artists really step it up a notch by adding sound effects to their music. Creating historical sound effects is easy when your working with an antique Biltmore silver tone dollar pocket watch. Keeping with the historical sounds in today’s podcast we step back in time with my great grandpa’s pocket watch making sound effects and telling the story. Video game music in today’s gaming industry all but demands you be on the cutting edge as a sound designer. All gaming sounds and audio effects need to be on point. The level of intense graphics in today’s systems coming from the gaming industry all but demand better game music and sound effects. Video game music is an essential element for sound designers to focus on because today’s gamers see and hear it all.  Today in episode 009 of the Sound Effects Podcast we visit the musical side of the gaming industry and hear an example of how to add music to video game with sound effects laid out as a fictional video game. Sounds from the past can spark a memory, peek curiosity, and provide the listener with lot of entertainment if presented the right way. You may have noticed the Sound Effects Podcast is already breaking new ground in the audio production world with an actual podcast and show about.. recording, editing, and all things audio. As the SFX Ninja of the Clan of Sound Design I am adding a new segment to the weekly lineup of podcast episodes called “Time Travel Tuesday”. For the first edition we travel back to the year 1999.. the season was in heat of a very hot summer, and the place was somewhere in North or South Carolina on the east coast USA. Today’s podcast episode 008 – Time Travel Tuesday Sounds from the past and a very hungry Bug is about a mosquito that landed on, bit the microphone, and flew off. This clip is kind of like a blooper or unexpected surprise because I was originally there to record crickets and cicada sound effects. Time Travel Tuesday will be an ongoing regular show here on the Sound Effects Podcast that will focus on 3 main elements – History, Sound, and Story. For instance lets imagine an old working Ford Model T car to use as an example. Each show will focus on the History of an item or previously recorded sound(s). The Sound / audio clip will either have been recorded at some point in the past OR will be recorded (AHUUGA HONK! of the horn) sound effects for the Time Travel Tuesday weekly episode. There will be a compelling Story about the item used to make sound effects or the historical audio clip. As a sound designer you must always try to be aware of each moment and all of the possible sound effects you can record. Future history and all of life is in session.. are you listening? Today the SFX Ninja takes the podcast out recording live audio during an interview making blacksmith, metal, and forging sound effects with my neighbor Shea the bladesmith. Join us this episode as I interview my neighbor Shea while he forges a knife out of a metal file. Any time someone has a passion for something it really shows and as  a Ninja of sound effects I was very grateful for him to take time to share his knowledge and skill with Shea would say he is an amateur blacksmith / bladesmith but I would say he was a true blacksmith. After years of study, trial and error, and hands on experience Shea is living the dream of following your passion in your spare time. Listen while I record live blacksmith sounds as he explains some of the terms like grain structure, methods of working as a blacksmith & bladesmith, and how to get started. A little background Shea is a family man with a full life with a wife, kids, and full work schedule but I was very grateful for him to take the time to share his passion with us and allow me to interview him for the Sound Effects Podcast. About half of the free sound effects for today’s episode were taken from the in between words during the interview. The rest of the free metal and metallurgy sounds for download were recorded after the interview where I was able to get some more great blacksmith sound effects. If your a big fan of video games AND sound effects then today’s show is right up your ally! For sound designers and anyone looking to record the winter audio that makes its way to your back yard.. go grab your microphone and start the fire in the fireplace.
