Getting the word out about your ethical, sustainable brand is crucial to its future -- but growing visibility can be tricky and time-consuming. There's public relations, brand awareness, growth hacking, networked marketing, affiliate relationships, content creation, social media and on and on and on. It's part of my mission to elevate brands who are making positive change in the world. Spirit of 608
This week, we dive into a world where sustainable fashion gets experiential. We'll hear from a guest who not only designs using sustainable materials and ethical manufacturing practices, but is taking transparency to an entirely new level through travel. Launching a tour to India this fall, this California luxury fashion brand is not only preaching more positive practices in apparel, but opening up its supply chain to show fans and customers a behind-the-scenes view of how clothes are made.
Meet this week's guest, Saloni Shrestha, CEO and designer of AGAATI.

What you need to know:
Saloni and AGAATI believe that sustainability is all about being responsible to their communities and environment. That means keeping socio-economic and environmental impact as the framework at the core of this California luxury brand's designs, supply chain and logistics. In fact, they even take some of their customers and fans with them on customized cultural tours to India to meet the very weavers that created the clothes that they've purchased. With over 8 years of experience specializing in designing women’s ready-to-wear collections that are narratives of nature, culture and people, Saloni is a fashion design graduate of Parsons, The New School. Saloni is trained in couture and ready-to-wear with her knowledge further enhanced through stints at reputed fashion houses such as Oscar De La Renta, Diane Von Furstenberg, Zac Posen and Naeem Khan. She's a native of the Himalayas who has lived and travelled across various continents, which she says, is also a key source of inspiration and influence. Growing up surrounded by purity of nature, diverse culture, music, vibrant textiles and bold colors have all been embraced in her creative process.

#so608 Recycle: On Not Being a Girlboss, Raising Capital & NYC Startup Life with Recently Acquired FEST biz Bow &...
Episode in
Spirit of 608
Hot on the sparkling, sequined heels of FEST biz Bow & Drape's recent acquisition news, we're bringing back a popular conversation with co-founder Aubrie Pagano, who helped lead the company from its early days as a custom women's apparel startup to its current life as the go-to for punny casual wear featuring phrases like Goal Digger, You Had Me at Merlot + more. In this #so608 Recycle episode, Aubrie and I talk NYC startup life, fundraising, microfunds for female founders and a lot more. Whatever the size of your company, Aubrie brings a perspective that not only highlights how entrepreneurial paths shift, change and evolve in the most surprising ways, but also points to a future where more women-led businesses have a chance to thrive.

What you need to know:
Bow & Drape was recently acquired, an event that may point to a wider shift in the direct-to-consumer ecommerce space, according to Forbes. Along with that, we just love what Aubrie has to say, so we thought it was the perfect time to bring her back and share her wisdom again. In this conversation, Aubrie shares that, even though so many startup founders today think they've got to secure venture capital, choosing that route for outside funding is not for everyone - nor is it right for every company (which, btw, is not necessarily a bad thing). Aubrie lets us in on her tips for any founder planning to approach venture capital firms or individual investors in the future. From networking your way to the right people to bringing solid stats to the table, her advice will make you want to take notes. Plus, she's kind of a unicorn: one of a handful of female investors in venture capital who's built her own company while still having fun and turning out ridiculously good puns.

What happened next: how Evrnu’s Stacy Flynn made textile magic (okay fine, it’s actually science), secured $9M in...
Episode in
Spirit of 608
For the 200th episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast, we had to bring back a special guest, fan favorite, visionary FEST pioneer and all around badass for an update episode looking at what kind of amazing things can happen in a couple years' time. Since the beginning of the Spirit of 608 podcast way back in the fall of 2015 (I know!), we have aimed to inspire, inform and entertain women in FEST so they push on and continue bringing much-needed change to an industry that, while slow to adopt it in the past, is, these days at least, hungrier for it than ever. Listen to this update episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast to hear what happened next for this game-changing guest and her brand, whose entire purpose is to change fashion by creating technology capable of completely transforming textile waste into new fibers and new garments. That in and of itself is cool enough to warrant our FEST-ive fan girling, but when you hear they recently landed $9M in funding, a partnership with Stella McCartney + more, it's hard to not listen to what this fabulous female founder has to say.Re-meet this week's guest, Stacy Flynn, founder and CEO of Evrnu.

What you need to know:
Growing up in New York, Talia Eve had the unique opportunity to start her career in fashion at the young age of 17 as an intern at Dolce & Gabbana. From the infamous archive closets at Dolce to the rig walls of Ralph Lauren to the tiny first studio of Jonathan Simkhai to the Tribeca townhouse of Erin Fetherston and then to the old Hollywood inspired romance of Co, Talia got a glimpse into the inner workings of the fashion world. Next, moving to Los Angeles, Talia Eve wanted to create a clothing brand that every girl could identify with, feel confident wearing (cue sleepwear) and would make a positive impact in the world. In April 2018, Talia started Evewear, a sleepwear brand that uses all recycled fabrics and supports the local economy by manufacturing all product in Los Angeles.
Evewear came to life through understanding the experience of the modern day woman. As women, our moods, needs, and personalities are constantly evolving so why wouldn’t our clothing reflect these changes too? Evewear gives women the option to dress according to their different moods, not based on trends, demographics, or anything that can be quantified. The Free Spirit, Tomboy, Girl Next Door, Icon, and Romantic live inside each one of us.

My Top Client PR Challenges: How to Stop Sabotaging Your PR + Get Visible
Episode in
Spirit of 608
Are you unknowingly sabotaging your own PR and media efforts without even realizing it? Listen to this week's episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast to find out. During the August hiatus that we take every year to reorganize and improve what we're doing behind the scenes with PressDope and the clients I work with one-on-one, I spoke with so many FEST founders hoping to amp up media outreach and gain visibility during this year's super important Fall retail and shopping season. And wouldn't you know it, the very same challenges -- and self-sabotaging habits -- kept coming up again and again. After a month of talking to FEST founders and hearing the same things in conversation after conversation, I knew I needed to create an episode to help you stop doing the things that are going to hold you back, no matter how loud you shout when you've got news to share or how many journalists, bloggers and content producers you reach out to with your message. In this week's solo episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast, I'm knocking out the top client challenges that will sabotage your PR and visibility every single time so you stop doing them today and start getting the recognition you want. #so608recycle: How A Bad Night, No Experience & Getting Fired Were Everything Packed Party’s Jordan Jones Neede...
Episode in
Spirit of 608
For a lesson in taking risks, going with your gut, standing by your vision and how to turn a very bad, no good bummer of a day into the biggest aha moment of your young life, pull out your earbuds and settle in for a conversation that will make you laugh - and get you inspired to do work on even the most challenging days.
In this episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast, twenty-something founder Jordan tells us how one of her earliest media moments (um, which I, cough, wrote) ended up getting her fired from her job - and why that turned out to be the best thing that could have happened (even though it hardly felt like that at the time). After starting her company in a tiny San Francisco apartment during a phase of her life when she felt lonely in a new town and frustrated with a blah job, Jordan has grown her lifestyle gifting brand into one that counts famous fans such as Reese Witherspoon and stockists that include Nordstrom, Paper Source and Neiman Marcus.
Meet this week's guest, Jordan Jones, Founder of Packed Party.

From Small, Sustainable, Zero Waste Style in Dallas to Bravo's Project Runway with Lela Orr of Ferrah
Episode in
Spirit of 608
If you've ever let who you think you are hold you back, then this week's episode is for you (stop doing that by the way). For example, say you're an introvert in Dallas building a small, luxury sustainable fashion brand with zero waste design principles. You might assume, like this week's guest did, that you're not the kind of person who should go on TV at all, much less a hit reality show like Bravo's Project Runway. But if you did that, well, you might be absolutely wrong. Take it from Lela Orr, who was quietly growing her brand Ferrah from her Texas home base and, for years, balked whens friends told her to try out for the show. A self-described chill girl with a no-drama attitude, she thought producers would pass on her application -- but she eventually decided to try out. And wouldn't you know it, turns out she fit right into the show and found an excellent new platform for her growing brand and its ethical values.
Meet this week's guest, Lela Orr, Founder of Ferrah.

What you need to know:
Ferrah is a Dallas-based 360-atelier and eco-luxury brand. Lela is the founder and creative director of the Ferrah brand. In 2019, Lela competed on season 17 of Bravo's Project Runway where she created high-fashion with a low carbon footprint. That's a fary cry from 2013, when she was one of the only design students in her school with a luxury and sustainable fashion focus.

10 Things To Ask Yourself on A Super Tough Entrepreneurial Day
Episode in
Spirit of 608
Got it all together? Everything going 100% smoothly? Like you're on the easy breezy train to chill-ville? That's fabulous. But come back next week. Seriously, this episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast is *so not* for you. This week, I'm bringing you a show that's for those murky, messy, turbulent, hectic times. It's for those days when you're not sure if you can keep the wheels on the proverbial cart, whether you're distracted because of something heady and wonderful like getting smacked in the face by love or completely thrown by unexpected life changes, cross-country moves, health challenges, divorce or tough things in the lives of partners, parents, children and others you love. I've been through a few of those things in the four years since I started the Spirit of 608 podcast. I've coped and, I dare say, gotten a hell of a lot stronger and more resilient by creating tools that allow me to game my mindset and stay on track. Okay, not always absolutely on track, but able to get back on it quickly when I fall off. Among those tools: questions I ask myself whenever I'm having one of those super tough entrepreneurial days. I'm sharing them with you on this week in hope that they can help you the next time you're in the thick of it. Do you have your own mindset strategies? If so, I'd love to hear about them. DM me on Instagram and let me know @spiritof608. Learn how to make your podcast one sheet great by listening to this week's solo episode of the Spirit of 608 podcast with Lorraine Sanders.
