I recently got the opportunity to test myself against the insidious energy of narcissism. It's an energy I've encountered a lot in my life, from diagnosable narcissists to the much more common victim of narcissism—who has then taken on these behaviors as a defence mechanism. I include myself in that. For years I excelled at manipulation, without even realising what I was doing. Just feeling helpless and hopeless and knowing that “this is the way to act”, because that's the way I'd been shown to act. So, healing, healing, healing. And bit by bit my own behaviours shifted. But I still struggled with navigating boundaries and needs with others who were taken by this energy. By this devil. This episode is a story of how I faced this energy, but refused to play the game the way I'd been playing for years. Ahhhh boundaries, why do you have to feel so bad?! While it DOES get easier to set boundaries, at the beginning it's like pulling your arm off in an effort to just get a little space. Painful, with instant regret, and the results are generally less than stellar. Why does this happen? Aren't we SUPPOSED to set boundaries? Isn't this the healthy thing?  Yes. And. Yes, it's healthy, AND it's like trying to put a car in reverse when it's barrelling down the highway. Most of us have been modeled scapegoating as a way of navigating the world, usually from a very early age. This is the process of taking something that may present a legitimate issue, then using that thing as THE reason that our pain exists. It’s so tempting, due to its simplicity. The thought is if we could just remove the scapegoat from our lives—through control, manipulation, running away—then we’d be fine. We wouldn’t hurt anymore. The problem is, when one scapegoat leaves, another one pops up in its place, because the underlying wound hasn’t been healed. Now, on top of the wound, and the current scapegoat, you add on the shame of whatever methods were used to get rid of the last scapegoat. It’s a cycle that, ultimately, buries you under victimhood, shame, and unhealed pain. But it’s not a life sentence. There is a way to move out the scapegoat cycle, and into a life of love and personal accountability. You are stronger than you think. Stay safe out there, loves, and Use Your Voice. A strong magician is an integrated magician. It’s tempting to lean on spells and ritual to ‘fix’ the challenges we face in the 3d. Problem is, the results of such magic will always lack a certain power and be rife with unintended consequences. Magick practiced from a place of self-awareness and healing, however, can change the world. Growing up leaves its mark. It doesn’t matter if your parents were A+ top-notch, or bottom of the barrel omg-what-the-hell; either way, they left a mark. Those marks can hurt. A lot. And they’re not the end of the story. You don’t have to constantly carry around the wounds of your childhood—and the stories attached to them—just because they happened. It puts you way out in vulnerable territory, because if you're honest about something—like what you need—and you get rejected, it can cut right to the quick. And yet…when you’re not honest, there’s no chance your needs ever get met, by anyone. Including yourself. And that gives rise to alllll sorts of problems. So, it’s really difficult—and ultimately fruitless—to try to ‘convince’ someone who isn’t already open to the possibility. But, oh what magickal things happen when we are open to possibilities!
