Futility and hope in a cursed world

William Taylor - Genesis 4 brings us face to face both with human ingenuity and an exponential increase in human wickedness. As we look at the world around us we see constant examples of both. But no amount of ingenuity seems to stop human evil and the advance of violence. What hope do we have for humanity? Genesis 4 shows us we have just one source of hope.

Temple bodies: remain as you are

Gwilym Davies - God has called each of us. We are not called to a new social status, or to give up our professions and occupations. We are called by God to follow him in whatever position or circumstance we find ourselves.

Temple bodies: glorify God with your body

Gwilym Davies - Does our fellowship with Jesus Christ call us away from a marriage relationship? Christians often think that a radical commitment to holiness entails the rejection of sex, marriage, and family. They use 1 Corinthians 7 to make the case for radical relational abstinence. Paul’s aim in 1 Corinthians 7 is certainly undivided devotion to the Lord Jesus and a radical commitment to holiness. But in 1 Corinthians 7:1-16, we see the call to holiness is to be answered within our families and not a call to leave them behind.

Life and death in a cursed world

Aneirin Glyn - In a world that outwardly values peace and happiness, why do we see anger and violence all around us? And why do religious issues cause so much violence? The account of the first religious murder in Genesis 4 tells us the answer. God’s word makes sense of God’s world–and without Genesis 4 we will always find ourselves uninformed about the root of conflict.

Where are we now?

Tim Sheppard - What’s life going to be like? Our optimistic age anticipates a utopian future—even Eden restored. The Bible gives a more realistic picture: the pain and toil of a good world under God’s curse. As well as explaining our brilliant-but-broken experience of life, work, and marriage, we see where true hope lies: not back in Eden, but forward, in the Lord Jesus.

Where are we now?

Aneirin Glyn - Why is the world as it is today? This passage shows us the painful effects of humanity’s rebellion against its creator. In the midst of this deserved judgment from God, we hear a stunning promise. God will bring about his purposes for his creation.

Temple bodies: freedom to not (with Q&A)

William Taylor - A culture with a fluid concept of love suggests that what we do with our bodies doesn't matter. The Apostle Paul argues that our bodies really matter to God. God has reclaimed our bodies and has a future for our bodies. The physical is important to God. In this passage, we see Paul’s teaching on sex and relationships is not only good for humanity, it is also profoundly liberating.

How did it all go wrong?

Tim Sheppard - If God created such a good world, where did it all go wrong? We often lay the blame at his feet, but Genesis 3 shows us that humanity is to blame. Our failure to trust the word of the Lord is why the world is the way it is. Our only hope is in Jesus, the one who perfectly trusted God's word.

Temple bodies: why not rather suffer wrong?

William Taylor - The church needs to understand some key concepts in order to establish gospel ministry in places where Christianity is unknown. Gospel ministry needs to be clear and the church's identity visibly distinct from the world. Internal disputes within the church concerning property and reputation are symptoms of a far greater problem–the failure to grasp the new identity we have in Christ.

The perfect world in relationship (with Q&A)

Tim Sheppard - As our society moves away from a biblical understanding of the world, Genesis provides an essential view of the Creator’s good design. In this climax of the creation account, we see how gender and marriage are designed to help humanity fulfil our unique purpose.

The perfect world in relationship

Aneirin Glyn - What is marriage all about? In Genesis 2, we read about the nature and purpose of marriage, and how it displays God’s aim in creation–to enjoy a relationship with his people.

Temple bodies: purity matters

Phil Hudson - How should a church deal with persistent unrepentant sin? This chapter is countercultural but on close examination Paul's instructions are good for the sinner, the Church and the watching world.

The perfect world at work

Tim Sheppard - With all that’s going on in the world, how can we believe in a good God? Genesis 2 reminds us of the goodness of God revealed in creation. The very purpose of humanity is to proclaim God's goodness to the ends of the earth.
