Non Non Biyori - 'Nothing! The Anime!'

With our first guest ever, Cooper's disappointed uncle and Danielle's dad, James Robertson, we discuss the slice of life "masterpiece", Non Non Biyori! Telling the "tale" of a busty 5th grader coming out to the middle of nowhere, we dig into the characters, the tropes, and the genre as a whole. Naturally Cooper has a dozen and a half theories and the team spends quite a bit of time talking about who exactly this show is for. It doesn't have the uncouth pornographic view some do and it clearly isn't saying anything, but it's definitely doing something for someone. There's plenty of jokes and riffing and we dig into the insanity and beauty of this pointless show of nothingness.    Subtitle Subtext is the collaboration of an absolute otaku and an anime n00b. Together, Cooper Henckel and Danielle Peiris watch different anime, dig around for something serious, and talk about it for way too long. They tackle the deeper elements of the plot, gush over how cute things are, and just generally talk about the weird world of anime. It goes without saying, spoilers will be involved.   Follow us on instagram and twitter @subtitlesubtext Hosted by Cooper Henckel (@saltycoop and on insta) and Danielle Peiris (@daniellepeiris) Produced by Cooper Henckel Cover Art by Alyssa Creagh

Tokyo Godfather - 'Christmas Movie! The Anime!'

Today we're jumping into "Tokyo Godfathers", the award-winning 2003 anime film based on the novel Three Godfathers by Peter B. Kyne. Cooper is convinced that the sweet little baby Kyoko is Jesus, Danielle, for once, isn't obsessed with the obviously sad character, and we both obsess over Hana. We cover the representation of homelessness and transgender people in anime, specifically how this film reflects the realities of marginalized populations in Japan without drowning in sorrow, pity, or anguish. Instead, this film manages to take a range of difficult subjects, uses them to inform the characters, and then tells a universal, human narrative centered around an abandoned baby and three people's quest to find where she belongs.    Subtitle Subtext is the collaboration of an absolute otaku and an anime n00b. Tokyo Mew Mew - 'Cooper Likes Magical Girls! The Anime'

Today we're talking about the early 2000s hit, Tokyo Mew Mew! The story of Ichigo, her other food-based friends, and a creepy cafe run by two high school students, they fight aliens trying to steal our natural resources! We talk a little bit about the story, Cooper makes fun of Danielle for liking the absolute worst character, and then we talk for ages about magical girls, why it's Cooper's favorite genre, and a whole bunch more about the real value of anime: cash money.    Subtitle Subtext is the collaboration of an absolute otaku and an anime n00b. Beyond the Boundary - 'Cooper is Reaching! The Anime!'

This week, we watched Beyond the Boundary, "Kyoukai no Kanata"! The romance of Mirai and Akihito told amongst demons, demon hunters, and the evils that haunt our souls. Danielle helps Cooper get his stretching in as he reaches for justifications, theories, and explanations of everything she finds unforgivable. There's sis-cons, weird fetishism, underage pornography, and a heartfelt love story all shown with the beautiful artwork one would expect from a Kyoani production. Listen in and let us know what you think: did Cooper's reaches pay off or is there really something truly lacking in this?    Subtitle Subtext is the collaboration of an absolute otaku and an anime n00b. Garden of Sinners - 'Boyfriend-kun! The Anime!'

We watch the 7 part movie series, Kara no Kyoukai - The Garden of Sinners! Actually based on a light novel, not a graphic novel, this film series released between 2007 and 2011. It covers the story of Shiki, her boyfriend, and the insane world they live in. We go movie by movie, talking about what we find interesting and ragging on some of the very, very unnecessary characters. Cooper and Danielle debate whether the plot actually matters or not and, to no one's surprise, Cooper does on a big long reach for some kind of meaning in this. A gorgeous series well worth your time, we think you're gonna like this! Plus, I call out Danielle and why she likes arguably the least interesting character in the series. Drama!   Subtitle Subtext is the collaboration of an absolute otaku and an anime n00b. Read.Or.Die (OVA) - 'Female James Bond! The Anime!'

This time we take on the 2001 OVA Read Or Die, more affectionately known as R.O.D. After stumbling through the intro and laughing at ourselves for way too long, dive into the amazing plot centered around Yomiko Readman and Nancy Makuhari, two superpowered agents working for the British Library. We talk about why we love them, the feminist read of this anime, and what it has to say about love. Cooper explains James Bond movies to Danielle and then we talk about how R.O.D. takes the formula, removes everything you don't want, and executes perfectly on everything we're looking for. We talk about the music, the art, and why some stories are best told in animation rather than live action.    Subtitle Subtext is the collaboration of an absolute otaku and an anime n00b. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Pt. 1 & 2 'Pro Wrestling! The Anime!'

In our first episode, we watch Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part One, "Phantom Blood", and Part Two, "Battle Tendency". If you haven't seen Jojo and are looking for a reason to, we'll definitely give you that! Despite Danielle's protestation against fighting shows in general, she quite enjoyed it! Bright colors, insane posing, and absolutely insane plot lines will help you get through pretty much anything. We figure out how to do introductions, ramble on about how great Lisa Lisa is, and dig into the body image of young boys and what Jojo has to say about that. There's some insight into how action movies and soap operas are the same, why Jojo is "Pro Wrestling, The Anime!", and why Cooper loves it so much!    Subtitle Subtext is the collaboration of an absolute otaku and an anime n00b.
