English - Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia. The Son you merited to bear, alleluia, Has risen as he said, alleluia. Pray to God for us, alleluia.
Musical Musings
- #chantnerdterm revisited: Simple (easier for the congregation to sing, this composition will be more syllabic/neumatic) vs. Solemn tone (more elaborate and melismatic – not as congregation-friendly)

Ep. 54: Ubi Caritas (Holy Thursday)
Episode in
Take a Chants on Me
Episode 54, “Ubi Caritas” (Holy Thursday)
Chant: Offertorium, Holy Thursday (Liturgical Color: White)
PDF: https://editor.sourceandsummit.com/legacy/tmp/gregorio6061e654485490.13344565.pdf
Text & Translation –
https://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Ubi_caritas
Musical Musings
- #chantnerdhistory: This hymn is attributed to St. Paulinus II of Aquileia of the 8th century. It has traditionally been sung on Holy Thursday. Before Vatican II, it was the last of eight antiphons sung during the rite of the Washing of the Feet, and is now used simply as an offertorium.
Liturgical Living
- Germans observe Holy Thursday as Gundannerstag and plan a green-foods menu for this day.

Ep. 53: Christus Factus Est (Palm Sunday)
Episode in
Take a Chants on Me
Episode 53, “Christus Factus Est” (Palm Sunday)
Chant: Introit, Palm Sunday
PDF: https://editor.sourceandsummit.com/legacy/tmp/gregorio605cf1b3a2af87.28481290.pdf
Text & Translation – Phillipians 2: 8-9
Latin: Christus factus est pro nobis obediens usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis. Propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum et dedit illi nomen, quod est super omne nomen.
English: Christ Christ became obedient for us unto death, even to the death, death on the cross. Therefore God exalted Him and gave Him a name which is above all names.
Musical Musings
- #chantnerdnotation: The Do moves down a ledger line halfway through
the piece, because the range of notes goes uncommonly far outside the range reflected by the four lines on the chant staff.
Resonant Reflections – Guest: Liz Owen, www.lizowenmusic.com
Questions:
1) Are we observant of where God wants us?
2) Do we actively ask God for our deepest desires?
3) Are we obedient when the answer is no?
Sunday Playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHYZvEUh7jbPbaUawEeR_H3xHLcWspFsQ
- Track 5 – Anerio
- Track 11- Piaciello, with a gorgeous soprano line
- Track 13 - Bruckner (most popular setting for the text)
- Track 14 - Rheinberger (a favorite composer of Guine’s)
- Track 19 – Kevin Watalangi – a foot-stomping contrast to the rest of the playlist

- English: If a man would serve me, let him follow me, wherever I am, my servant will be there too.
Musical Musings
- #chantnerdlatin: H may be silent when sung, but some musicians (like me!) will treat it like a wet “k”, so pronouncing ‘mihi’ like “mee-kee” instead of “mee-hee”
Resonant Reflections
- What is the ‘grain of wheat’ that has died in your life, or that you know you need to bury? Can you imagine how the Lord might use that surrender to bear great fruit?
