Tales Vinyl Tells is my podcast that evolved into my radio show that airs weekly on RadioFreeNashville. I had quite a few LPs that I collected in the late 60s and 70s and I always knew the magic of the albums of that era of album-oriented rock brought back memories of times, people, smells, tastes and feelings. I hope it does for you too. Back-stories and album liner notes tie the tunes together.
I’m your host Brian Hallgren and you should hear the Tales Vinyl Tells!

Episode 189: One Of The Main Musical Topics Of The 60s: Protest!

One nonviolent way to show one’s displeasure/disgust/disagreement is to protest. In a letter to the editor, written in a blog, by contacting your lawmakers, taking it to the streets and there are many other ways. Pete Seeger was known for his songs protesting mistreatment of workers and war itself, and over time there has been a great abundance of songs and actions of protest. Marvin Gaye, CCR, Nina Simone, Dylan, Lennon and many others wrote and performed their protest songs from What’s Goin’ on?, Blowin’ in the Wind to Fortunate Son, Give Peace a chance and Strange Fruit. In the future you’ll hear an episode of Tales Vinyl Tells dedicated to protest songs. Please send your ideas to me at TalesVinylTells@gmail.com and yours may well be included. And when you email me, please be sure to let me know who and where you are. I mention protest songs because we kick off with a real kicker from Quicksilver Messenger Service and include Petty, Joni, Cheech, Chong, Nick and more. Thanks for listening. Episode 184: Some Of The Vinyl Goodies From 1969

Episode 184: Some Of The Vinyl Goodies From 1969 Hello and welcome!  It’s another Tales Vinyl Tells, an excursion into the great album cuts of our vinyl records of the 60s & 70s.  Today we’re tuned into some of the 1969 releases that rocked and changed the consciousness of the world. Tommy, the Who’s Rock Opera came out in 69. So did the Stones’ Let It Bleed, Santana’s first,  The Stooges debuted with Iggy Pop and the first two Zeppelin LPs came out in that year. So did Abbey Road.  And “The Band” LP, with Cripple Creek and The night they drove old dixie down.  Yeh!  It was a great musical year, 1969.   I’m Brian Hallgren.  I’ve been doing this podcast since December 2019 and the radio program since January of 2022.  And here’s today’s episode, #184, exposing some of the Tales Vinyl Tells. Welcome to the camp. Thanks for listening today. My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com. Episode 97: Gershwin Prize Winner! Winner, Winner, Got A Spinner!

Episode 97: Gershwin Prize Winner! Winner, Winner, Got A Spinner! March 30, 2026 From May 2024: The aging process on humans is real. What we do and don’t do may play a big part in how that process affects us or not. The vinyl LPs of that era and the new ones being purchased today will last a lot longer than the color in our hair or our smooth and youthful skin. All I’m saying is that the age of rock is so wide and varied, from Elvis to Zappa, we have a lot of ground to cover in these short one-hour shows. And, who knows, maybe listening to the music of our youth may give a moment in time when we can enjoy those times or not. Admit it, it wasn’t all bad. If you have some input, like my friend, Puh-mella did, let me know your taste in music, who/what/when. Email all your comments to me at TalesVinylTells@gmail.com. Episode 141: Dickey Betts Salute , A Sleigh Ride On Nantucket? Details Here March 16, 2026 The proverbial circle of life continues to turn and we might find ourself getting in touch with our own mortality as time moves on. This week I reminisce, as I often do hearing this music. The sense input usually brings up feelings, emotions, thoughts, people, smells, tastes, sometimes things I could have done better or differently. But the music doesn’t change and that’s why I enjoy doing this podcast and radio show. Episode 140: Another 15 Million Unit LP, Long Time Since Phoenix Flew And More

Episode 140: Another 15 Million Unit LP, Long Time Since Phoenix Flew And More March 10, 2026 The ironies in life… This hour-long show just played on RadioFreeNashville.org and yesterday I was informed that Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band had passed away peacefully. He was 80. Jaimoe is the soul survivor of the original ABB now. The irony being that this particular episode started off Wednesday on radiofreenashville.org talking about the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East sessions from the summer of 1971. In fact, the second and third tunes from that session, on this episode, are from those Fillmore East fabulous concerts. If you didn't catch it during the live radio show, I was living in South Florida and was hanging out with some people I would call cool and we were doing a lot of concerts (and a fair amount of extracurricular recreational things). The concerts were affordable, like five dollars to eight dollars and we didn't mind traveling an hour to the Miami Jai Alai fronton to see the Allman Brothers Band live. That allowed plenty of time to get our heads right. It was a big party! It was the Fillmore East sessions! We were blown away. And in the first three months that the double album was on the market, it's sold a half million copies. I still have mine and you probably know I'm in love with it! Stormy Monday is a killer, You Don't Love Me is a great jam and the four sides contain wall-to-wall great southern rock. Thanks for listening today.  My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com.  If you want to hear a Tales Vinyl Tells when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org, we do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. The program can also be played and downloaded anytime at podbean.com, iHeart podcasts, Player FM podcasts, Listen Notes podcasts and many other podcast places. Episode 93: Nostalgia: “A Sentimental Longing Or Wistful Affection....”

Episode 93: Nostalgia: “A Sentimental Longing Or Wistful Affection....” February 17, 2026 …for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations”. Yeh man! Like the 60s & 70s! Playing for Change remakes songs with musicians from all over the world with sometimes odd instruments. Did you enjoy Joy of Cooking? Not the book, but the band. They’re here with a few nostalgic pieces just for you and our silly nostalgia. I’m in the present and love a lot of things about the past. The Doors and Zeppelin on windowpane. Allmans and shrooms. I do hope these tunes today will make you smile and encourage you to be grateful for all you are, here, now.
