TWAG – Round 16 State League Preview

Time for the Round 16 State League Preview Podcast! Download it. Listen to it. Tell your friends on Facebook & Twitter. Download here! Subscribe on iTunes! Also please remember to review us on iTunes! Finally, feedback (feedback@thatwasagoal.com)! What can we do better? Transcript Adriano: Hello everyone and a very warm welcome to the ThatWasaGoal.com Round 16 Football West Premier League Preview Podcast. I’m Adriano coming to you once again from the 89.7 Twin City Studios. Dave is fascinated by the… Dave: By the light, the recording light. The On-Air light. Adriano: … on the desk key (inaudible 00:19). Dave: It’s like flashing. It’s pulsing with your voice actually. As you raise your voice it pulses higher, then, goes lower. Adriano: Dave. Dave: Yes? Adriano: Round 16 of the Football West Premier League. Dave: Yes. Adriano: Producer Roffo is alongside us again, of course. Dave: Yes. Yes. Adriano: A welcome to him. Dave: Hi Roffo. Producer Roffo. Glad to have you. Adriano: Let’s go through the fixtures. Inglewood United versus Floreat Athena, an absolute bumper Dave. An absolute belter. Dave: Yes. Big. Adriano: Game in the round, first versus second. Dave: Real big one, yes. Just on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Adriano: Armadale versus Bayswater City. Dave: Now, the Armadalians. Adriano: The Armadalians. Dave: The Armadalians versus Bayswater. Adriano: Bayswater. Dave: Very good. Adriano: ECU Joondalup versus Bunbury Forum Force. Dave: Yep. Adriano: Balcatta versus the NTC. Dave: Balcatta. Come on, Adriano. Adriano: Balcatta. Dave: There you go, that’s better. Adriano: Western Knights versus Sorrento. Dave: Yes. Adriano: Sorrento!. Dave: [laughs] Adriano: There’s the famous chant there. Dave: Is it? Adriano: Sunday the standalone fixture is Perth versus Stirling Lions. Dave: Now why is that… They should switch those fixtures around, Inglewood, Floreat and…. Adriano: It would be a good point. Dave: I don’t know. Adriano: Yeah. Dave: We want a top of the table clash. Adriano: Yeah. Dave: For Sunday. Adriano: Yeah, it’s an interesting suggestion, Dave. Dave: We want a top of the table clash on the Sunday. Adriano: That clash… Yeah. Dave: I want to go watch it. Adriano: They are the two best teams in the league this season, there’s no doubt about it. Bayswater might have a case to argue but… Dave: Yeah? Adriano: But, at the moment on form, they are the two best. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Equal records. Floreat have the best attack in the league, Inglewood have got the best defense in the league. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: So if… God that (inaudible 01:53). Dave: Change it. Change it to Sunday. Adriano: If you know what ‘s going to happen on the weekend, tell us. Tell us now. Dave: Football West change it, make it on Sunday. Adriano: It won’t happen Dave. Dave: Put the Perth game on the Saturday. Adriano: It’s too late for that now. Dave: No, it’s not. Why? This isn’t the English Premier League. Adriano: Hey, Dave? Dave: Yes? Adriano: This is the one of the greatest leagues in the world. Dave: If they change the game, it’s not going to affect anything. Are the players going to go like, “Oh no, now our game’s on Sunday. My whole weekend’s ruined.” No, they’re not. Adriano: Yes, because they’ve got very social lives, they’re party animals. Dave: Oh, they’re going to go out on Saturday night… Adriano: Their reputation… Dave: … go night clubbin’. Adriano: … the reputation of the superstars of this league, Dave, they’re party animals. Dave: Are they? Adriano: They want to go out and do something. Saturday night they can’t do anything if they’ve got the game on Sunday. Dave: Bull… Go out on Sunday night. Geez. Adriano: Or Friday night. Dave: Or Friday night. Adriano: Give yourself 24-hours recovery. Dave: Thursday night? After training? Just go. [laughter] Adriano: Let’s look at the on field matters now, Dave. Dave: Yes. Adriano: Inglewood versus Floreat Athena. Dave: Yep. Adriano: So much to talk about here, Dave. They are the two best sides. They’ve got so many… There’s so many great players on the field. What do you see happening in this one? Dave: It’s going to be a tough match for both clubs, both teams. Inglewood’s midfield, like I’ve been saying for a couple weeks now, James [Samut] has been one of the things in the center for them. He’s going to be coming up against Floreat’s own man-in-the-middle, Mark Pritchard, who’s been running things for them I think it’s going to be a battle won and lost in that midfield, whoever gains control over the game. Adriano: (inaudible 03:31) will be vital again. Dave: Yeah. Whoever can… Adriano: David [Perich]. Dave: … impose their will upon the game and make sure that the play runs through them and is on top of the other team. They’re going to have the more chances, the more opportunities to score and to win the game I think. Adriano: That’s generally how it works, isn’t it. Dave: Yeah, but… No, I’m just saying… [laughter] I’m just saying it’s down to that battle in midfield. Whoever’s going to get that to go, is going to be the winner. Adriano: David Heagney, he would be a key, Dave. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: For Floreat… Dave: For Floreat, yes. Adriano: … in the top handful of scorers this season. Dave: Yeah, he’s done alright. Adriano: A real big test for Floreat, one of their first big test without Liam Boland. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: We’ll see how that works out for them. Dave: Yeah. He’s been a bit of a talisman for them this season. I mean, he’s popped up with goals here and there. He’s gone a route in the goals’ scoring charts. Adriano: Ludo Boi in that midfield scrap, as well. He’s going to be crucial for Floreat. Dave: Yeah, yeah he is. He’s crucial, yeah. Adriano: Jake Geddes, coming up against his old side too., part of the Floreat squad now, former Inglewood man. Dave: Yes. Adriano: How do we see it going Dave? As we mentioned earlier, Floreat the best attack in the competition, that was with Liam Boland, though. Dave: Yes. Adriano: Now, he’s gone. But, Inglewood with the best defense. Floreat have scored 46 goals this season. Inglewood have conceded only 18. Something will have to give on Saturday Dave. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: We don’t want it to be a nil-nil. Dave: No. Adriano: We want it to be… Dave: Hopefully, it’s both defenses are giving, just give goals. We want like a 4, 5-4 victory to someone. Just an idea. It’s tough to call this game. Adriano: We want a 5-4 victory to whoever plays the better football. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Who ever… Dave: They’ve got… Football’s the winner. Adriano: If it’s 5-4, it means they’re going to be playing some sort of good football, both side. Dave: Yes. Adriano: May the best team win on the day Dave. Dave: Yes. I think… Adriano: There are so many players who can influence the game. As we’ve talked about it, it’s got everything except a draw written on it Dave. Dave: Oh, yeah, definitely, definitely. Adriano: It’s got high scoring game written on it. Dave: It’s got (inaudible 05:31). It does, yeah. I think Floreat is going to come away with the win. Adriano: What score Dave? Dave: It’s going to be 3-2 to Floreat. Adriano: 3-2? Dave: 3-2, yeah. Adriano: All right. Dave: It’s going to be exciting in (inaudible 05:46). Adriano: All right. Dave: Going to down to the last minute, this one. Adriano: You reckon? Dave: 2-0, Floreat score in the final minute, that’s it. Adriano: Big call, big call. All right. Armadale versus Floreat Athena… Floreat Athena, what am I on about? That was last week. Armadale versus Bayswater City. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Off my head Dave. Dave: You are. Adriano: Off my rocker. Dave: You’ve gone crazy. Adriano: Armadale versus Bayswater City. Bayswater City in third spot behind those top two. Dave: Yep. Adriano: Not in the best, not in the vintage form of late Dave, are they? Dave: No, not really. Adriano: They’re still getting the results on the board. Dave: Still getting the results they need. Adriano: Against the Western Knights last… although the hiccup against ECU Joondalup. If they can beat Armadale on the weekend, that will be long gone in the memory because they’ll have had two wins on the road since then. Dave: Two wins on the trot, yeah. Adriano: It’s been a pretty, I wouldn’t say an easy run, Dave. A bit of a lighter run for Bayswater, ECU, Western Knights, now Armadale. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: all teams in that bottom four. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: They’ve got to cash in on it Dave. They’ve… Dave: Yeah, definitely. Adriano: … got to cash in and keep winning. Dave: You would have expected them to take all 9 points from those three games. As it stands, they’ve only got 3 so far. Adriano: I think they’re 6. Dave: Yes. This Armadale, I mean it’s going to be a tough game against the Armadalians, as we’ve dubbed them Adriano. It will be a tough game because we all know Armadale is a hard place to go by. Go to, don’t go by. What am I on about? Good support and down there in Armadale they always put up a battle, good battle and make it just hard for teams to go there. So Bayswater, I’m not sure if they’re going to have Mel Lander back, if he’s back from suspension yet. Even so, he hasn’t scored for quite awhile now. It’s been almost four weeks. Adriano: I thought he scored… Dave: It will be four weeks. Adriano: … two or three weeks ago, Dave? The game before the ECU Joondalups? Dave: Before the ECU game. Coming this week, that’ll be three weeks, then. So three to four weeks we’ll put it at. Adriano: Yeah. But he’s been out for one of them. Dave: Yeah, been out for one of them but take… Adriano: It doesn’t matter when you’ve got (inaudible 07:47) scoring Dave, as well. Dave: Yeah, yeah. Adriano: And new players like Quinn [SP] popping up on the scoreboard like he did last week. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Marshall Quinn. Dave: Yeah. It’ll be a tough game for Bayswater but I think they’ll scrape the win here. Armadale won’t have enough in the tank to get one over on Bayswater. Adriano: Okay, so what score? Dave: Going to go with 2-1 to Bayswater. Adriano: 2-1 Bayswater. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: ECU Joondalup versus Bunbury Forum Force, Dave. Dave: Big game for ECU. Adriano: We talked about the one for top between Floreat and [NTU]. Dave: Or a 3-pointer, there’s only three points up for grabs. Adriano: The relagation 6-pointer though Dave, the classic. Dave: Yeah but I call it a 3-pointer, because there are only 3 points. Adriano: Yeah, I know. All right. Dave: I’m just getting technical here, sorry. Adriano: Yeah, okay. There not bottom and second respectively. ECU Joondalup are bottom but Bunbury are third bottom. Dave: Yes. Adriano: I’ll tell you what, if ECU Joondalup get a win Dave and assuming that Bayswater beat Armadale which we think will probably happen, that means all three of them will be locked on 14 points. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: There is still incentive for ECU, Dave. They’ve struggled. Dave: Yeah, definitely, yeah. Adriano: I think they’re the third weakest attacking side in the competition and the second most number of goals conceded. So, they take on a Bunbury side who displayed some potential this season Dave. Dave: Yes. Adriano: We’ve them be able to hold teams. I think they got the win against Sorrento, something like that. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: They’ve been close in games, Dave, close. Dave: Yeah, they have, yeah, all season. Adriano: But only 17 goals, Dave. They’ve got the weakest attack in the competition. That will have to change starting this Saturday. Dave: Yeah, yeah. It’s a long, long drive all the way North for Bunbury. Now, ECU, this is a massive game for them because if they lose this Bunbury get ahead of them by … Adriano: Six points. Dave: … 6 points. Western Knights, depending on their result against Sorrento will pull away as well. So it’s a massive, massive game for ECU and they need the win to basically keep their Premier League alive. They’ll be riled up for this one and I think the ECU will get the win here, 2-1 to ECU. Adriano: The experienced players Dave, Anderson, Andy Banks, Tommy (inaudible 10:10), John Thornley, who have just come back into the side. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Quinn Croft, Foster, they have to step up now. Dave: Yeah, definitely. Adriano: And help some of the younger boys. Dave: There are some very good players in this ECU. Adriano: Dale McCulloch. Dave: Yeah. Some very good players in this ECU squad. I mean you’ve got Tommy (inaudible 10:25), who’s playing for glory. He’s a good player, very quick and he’s got a good eye for goal. He scored last week. He’s going to want to add to that tally. Billy Quinn-Croft has been at Sorrento in previous seasons as well. He’s played over in Indonesia as well, recently. Also, Dave Foster is very experienced. He’s played for a number of clubs in the Premier League. He’s a good striker and a very good player. Dale McCulloch’s been around ECU for many years and he’s very experienced. They’re squad is good and it’s kind of a surprise they are where they’re at. We said that about them. We also said the same about Western Knights, as well, with the squad and with the names that they’ve got. It’s a surprise where they are now. Adriano: The Knights squad I think is a bit younger Dave. Dave: No, I mean start of the season, we did say that. We’re like, why are the Knights at the bottom of the league? And it was a bit strange because they’ve got some names, Devon Nile has been there. They’ve got Kevin… what’s his name, in goal? I’ve forgotten his sur name. He’s a good goalkeeper. Adriano: We’ll get to that later Dave. Dave: I’m just saying. Adriano: Yeah. Cambell? Dave: No. Kevin Cambell. Adriano: Bunbury, Dave, of course have a new player coach in [Matt Lock], so he’ll hope to turn things around before seasons end. Predictions for this one Dave? Dave: I already said my prediction. I said ECU – 2, Bunbury – 1. Adriano: Right, you did. Balcatta versus NTC, Dave? Just quickly. Dave: Kevin Miller, that’s the one. Adriano: Kevin Miller. Dave: Kevin Miller. Adriano: Balcatta versus NTC, the thing for Balcatta here, the key for them is to win. If they’re going to start dropping points against the NTC… [clears throat] There’s the frog. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Ribbit. There old frog, bloody frog there. Look, they’re 6 points behind Perth and the rest of the finals aspirates. If they’re going to start dropping points against the NTC, they’re going to be real [barber]. Dave: Yeah, definitely. Now the NTC, this is another game for them to lose, basically. Adriano: Without Pablovic, [Joe Pablovic]? Dave: No, he was sent off last week. But the NTC, they’ve been winless all season, is it? They’ve had one draw. Adriano: A couple of draws. Dave: Couple of draws. There was a recent article by Ashley Morrison [SP], it was on football.wa.net, he was asking some questions about NTC. Adriano: He was asking why. Dave: Yeah, he was asking why. He was saying that quite a lot of NTC players were getting fed up with it and they aren’t enjoying their football which is the last thing that anybody wants for these kids who are, basically, the future of West Australia football to be having. We need them to be… they do need to have a winning mentality and be in a winning team basically. To have that kind of talent and to be losing every week is not good for them. I think some… Adriano: Are they talented Dave though, if they’re getting belted… Dave: No, no. Well that, I think they’re just too young. Adriano: The step up is just too much, Dave. So what is the solution? Dave: People always say if you’re good enough you’re old enough. That’s not true. I don’t think that’s ever true. You could be extremely good, but just because you are extremely good…. You might be young and you might be, I don’t know, just not have the same application as a older more experienced player would in the same situation, you know? So it’s a tough one for NTC. Should they stay, should they go? I think they should up the age of the players that they have playing in the first end competition and then maybe the players that are playing in the first end competition now, should just drop down to the reserves and so forth down the line. You know. I think the players playing in the first two competitions should be 21 and they should be an under-21 squad or something like that. But it’s up to Football West and I think they’ve got this all wrong. Adriano: Prediction for Balcatta and NTC? Dave: Balcatta, must win game for them to get the points and to stay in touch with that top five they’re trying get into. If they drop points here, it’s bad news for them. They’ll be riled up for it and I think they’ll get the win 2-nil. Adriano: Western Knights versus Sorrento, Dave… Dave: Yes. Adriano: … at Wauhop Park. A crucial game for the Knights because we know they are in the relgation battle. Sorrento though Dave, the only side after 15 games yet to draw in this one, in this competition. So, 10 wins and 5 losses. The thing for them, Dave, is their goal difference. They’ve got to really up the ante on that. They’re well behind the other top five sides. They don’t want to get separated at home finals and such with goal difference Dave. At least for them, they’ll be looking for maybe a bit of a boost for the GD. Dave: Yeah. They will be wanting that. If they don’t get it… I don’t think it’s a major drama for them. I don’t think they’re going to win the league. Once they come up against Floreat and Inglewood, if they do in the last few rounds or whatever. I don’t think they will come out on top. They will be in the top five, so it’s definitely just points for Sorrento at this stage. I think they’re goal difference, I don’t think they’re going to finish out on equals points with first or anything like that. It’s going to come down to the goal difference. Adriano: Yeah, with third or fourth or fifth, Dave. Home finals, here and there, you know. Dave: Yeah, but I don’t think the home final kind of thing doesn’t play too much into it for a club like Sorrento and I think at this level it’s not that big of a deal, home final. Just points for Sorrento. They will do it. The Western Knights have just been a kind of terrible all season. No offensive to them but they just haven’t had the performances to get the points they need. And it’s going to be a tough one for them, but Sorrento will come out with the win. Adriano: Prediction, then? Dave: 3-1 Sorrento. Adriano: They’ve got goal scorers all over the park, don’t they Dave? Dave: Yeah, they do. Adriano: Last week, I think Pearson and Platin [SP] defenders came up with goals. John (inaudible 17:05) scored one as well. Dave: Well, maybe their strikers just… Yeah. Adriano: [Ben Chaney] was on the bench last week. Dave: He was, yeah. Adriano: (17:11), so he’s got a point to prove. There’s talent all over the place and I think they’ve got Gavin [Night] now, from Bayswater, Sorrento. Dave: Yes. Adriano: He was used last week as a sub. They’re just brimming with experience, Dave, aren’t they? Dave: They are. Adriano: And you wouldn’t expect experience to drop again while against the youthful Knights. Dave: No, definitely not. Adriano: All right. Finally, Perth versus Stirling Lions on the Sunday. Dave: Yes. Adriano: Vista Dave, for Stirling Lions. They’re starting to play their final cards now, I think. These are the games they’ve got to win. Well, they’re playing Perth who are in fifth position and they’re 6 points behind Perth with a game in hand. If they win it Dave, they’re 3 points behind Perth, fantastic math. It took a long time to solve that. Dave: I’m glad you came up with that one because I wouldn’t have got it. Adriano: Not only are they 3 points but they’ve still got that game in hand which means if they win that game in hand against Balcatta they’ll be level. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: A lot to play for here… Dave: A lot to play for. Adriano: … but on the other side of the coin, Dave, if Perth win, it puts a 9 point break between the sides. Dave: Yep. Adriano: It makes it very difficult when there are only seven games left in the season to pull a gap back like that. Dave: Yeah. Also, it pushes Perth up into that past the 30-point mark. Adriano: The magical 30-point mark. Dave: Yeah. Which is 34 points, a Floreat/Inglewood draw, it’s 35, Perth will be 32.There right back in there, so it’s a must-win game for both of them, actually. It’s going to be a ripper, a rip-snorter. Adriano: Dave, there’s context in every game in this league… Dave: Yeah, yeah. Adriano: … and we love it so much, there’s no game where you look at it and you think, “Oh, that doesn’t mean anything.” The league Dave, that’s why it’s such a good and entertaining league. Dave: Yeah, even with NTC, it means nothing but points. Even they’re game means something. Adriano: Dave, if you look at the way the ladder is, there is not one game… Every game, every round, all 16 games Dave, have an important context for the rest of the season and for the future of each team. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: It’s not like one of these other leagues we see around the world where [mid] table teams play out a [boring] draw that means nothing to anyone. Every single game, like the ones we just previewed here and every single game until Round 22, Dave… Dave: And what’s the word? Adriano: … for however many rounds it is. Dave: Adriano, what is the word? Every single game had permutations, doesn’t it? Adriano: Permutations. It certainly does Dave. Dave: Yeah, that’s what it’s all about, this league, is permutations. Adriano: What will happen in this one Dave? This is a battle of great forward lines because Perth has scored, what, 43 goals this season. We know that they’ve got up front. We they’re attacking starts. Stirling Lions haven’t been vintage goal-scoring form but when you’ve got Andy Brown and Anthony [Lyons] hanging around, there’s going to be trouble for opposition defense. Dave: Yeah, a lot of trouble. I don’t think too much trouble. Perth’s newly acquired striker, Liam Boland, he’s been playing well for them. He scored on his debut. He’s going to be the man getting a couple of goals for Perth during this game I think. Stirling Lions like you said, they’ve got some good players, Andy Brown, Anthony Lyons, Kyran Nunes. They, I don’t know, they’ve been up and down this season. I think Perth just have too much quality. Adriano: An unusual season for Perth, Dave. Dave: It is, yeah. Adriano: It’s been awhile since we’ve seen this. Dave: Yeah, definitely. Adriano: I know they had a bad run at the end of last season but they were still in second position when they had that run. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a Perth side in fifth spot Dave, two-thirds of the way through the season. Dave: Yeah, yeah, definitely. Perth’s squad hasn’t changed that much from what it has been in previous seasons, they still have that core of extremely good players. Adriano: The nucleus. Dave: Yeah, the nucleus. Adriano: Aren’t we the only one with a nucleus on our side? Dave: Oliveras, Negliaris [SP], [Charlin], they just have a good nucleus of strong and experienced players. It will be too much quality for Stirling this week. Adriano: So scoreline there? Dave: Scoreline will be 4-2. Adriano: [laughs] 4-2? He pulls out some rip-snorters, doesn’t he Roffo? Dave: Always. Adriano: Ladder before we go; Floreat Athena – 34, Inglwood United – 34, Bayswater – 31, Sorrento – 30, Perth – 29. That’s the top five. Balcatta – 23, Stirling Lions -23, Armadale -14, Bunbury -14, Western Knights -13 and ECU Joondalup -11. Dave: NTC – 0. Adriano: Yes. That wraps it up Dave. Dave: Yes. Adriano: Round 16 Preview Podcast of the Football West Premier League is done and dusted. Dave: That’s it. Adriano: Another one in the bag, Dave. Dave: Another one in the bag. My bag is full of TWAG podcasts. Adriano: Big thank you to producer Roffo, of course. One thing we forgot to mention on Monday’s program, Dave, the TWAG store specials. Dave: Oh, TWAG store specials. Adriano: Yeah, they’re still there. Dave: Yeah, of course they are. Adriano: Christmas in July. Dave: Christmas in July. Yeah it is. Christmas in July for Man City, Spain, Italy fans. Fans of football [books]. Adriano: Yeah it is. I’ve been in the TWAG store, Dave… Dave: Yes. Adriano: … and I’ll tell you, there is a bucket load of stuff. Dave: Yes. Adriano: You’ll find something on there that you’ll like. Dave: I think it would be more than one bucket load if you’ve gotten all the things in the store but… Adriano: If you don’t, then you can’t be a football fan. Dave: Either that or it would be an extremely large bucket but go there, buy some stuff and make me rich. No, I’m just kidding. No, I’m not, not kidding. Adriano: Big thank you to producer Roffo, of course. That wraps it up. On behalf of Dave, thank you for your continued listening everyone, get down to the football this week. It’s a fantastic league, Premier League, there are permutations everywhere. Dave: Permutations. Adriano: Teams are playing for futures and for survival and championships, players are playing for accolades, everything is happening. The food’s great, so get down there. Dave: TWAG foods. We haven’t touched on TWAG foods for a couple of weeks now. Adriano: Haven’t we? Dave: No. Adriano: That’s because it’s just so great. Dave: Is it? Adriano: Everything’s going great guns. Dave: All right. TWAG foods, there you go. The food everywhere is great. Eat it. Adriano: It is. On behalf of everybody here at the thatwasagoal.com team, get down to the football this weekend and we’ll see you again next week.

Download it. Listen to it. Tell your friends on Facebook & Twitter. Download here! Subscribe on iTunes! Also please remember to review us on iTunes! Finally, feedback (feedback@thatwasagoal.com)! What can we do better? Transcript Adriano: Welcome, everybody to the Round 15 That Was A Goal State League Preview Podcast. I’m Adriano, joined once again in the Twin Cities’ 89.7 studios by Dave. Dave: Hello. Adriano: Hi, Dave. Dave: Yeah. Why is my greeting humorous… Adriano: I don’t know. It’s just the way… Dave: …Adriano? Adriano: …just the way it popped out. Dave: Yep. Adriano: Newton’s still away. Dave: Good. Adriano: But we are with producer Roffo… Dave: Yep, as always. Adriano: …as we go through Round 15, Dave, of this amazing competition, which last week brought up some incredible results, including the ECU Bayswater game. Dave: Yep. Adriano: So, we’re expecting some more this week. But fixtures are Floreat versus Armadale, Bunbury versus Perth, Balcatta versus Inglewood United, Sterling Lions versus Football West NTC Men. Dave: So that’s how you’re going to read that one from now on, isn’t it? Adriano: Yeah, yeah. Dave: Yep. Adriano: Sorrento versus ECU Joondalup, and Western Knights versus Bayswater City. All right. Floreat Athena versus Armadale, Dave… Dave: Yep. Adriano: …at E&D Litis Stadium. Now, contrasting form coming into this one, Floreat with a 3-1 win, Armadale with a 3-1 loss. Dave: Yes. Adriano: Of course, Floreat beating the Western Knights by three goals to one, just hours after Liam Boland left the club for Perth. Dave: Yes. Adriano: In a sensational transferred… Dave: Transferred deadline. Adriano: Sensational transfer. Dave: Yes. It was pen to paper just before the deadline hit. Adriano: It was at 2:59 on Saturday afternoon, Dave. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Then Boland put on his Perth kit. No, it was at 2:50, and then he got in a private jet from E&D Litis Stadium… Dave: [inaudible 00:01:30] he was actually at Floreat about to go onto the pitch. Adriano: Yeah. Well, they played at the Western Knights. Dave: Oh, sorry. Yeah. Adriano: So, he was down there in Fremantle Way… Dave: Yeah. Adriano: …took a private jet into Dorian Gardens to start for Perth. That’s how… Dave: Put on his kit on the plane, went out onto the pitch. Adriano: Even more ridiculous than the Fernando Torres transfer, Dave… Dave: Yes. Adriano: …last year. Dave: It’s crazy stuff. That’s what the Football West Premier League gives us. Adriano: But looking at the game, Dave, one would have to say that Floreat heavy favorites given they’re leading the competition at this point in time. Dave: Yeah, definitely. Adriano: Armadale coming off the 3-1 loss to Inglewood United, of course. Armadale though, Dave, we know they can spring a surprise, but they usually did it on the home turf… Dave: Yeah. Adriano: …and offered Skeet. So, going away from home, they really do struggle. Dave: But you always say they’re a banana peel. Adriano: Potential banana skin [inaudible 00:02:17]. Dave: Banana skin, peel, same thing. The point is, it could be a potential slip-up for Floreat here. Armadale, they have, I think, they’ll be Bayswater, this season? Adriano: They’ll be in Sorrento. Dave: Sorrento, sorry. Adriano: I think another one would be [inaudible 00:02:34]. Dave: [Drew 00:02:35] or someone else. But, yeah, I mean they’re capable of actually getting those wins, but Floreat and ironed some really good form of light. I don’t know. They did get a couple of goals last week, but how will they go without a recognized striker there? Adriano: That’s the test from now on, Dave. Dave: Because, I mean, for what they’ve had in their squad this season as well, apart from Boland, they haven’t actually really had a backup striker there. Adriano: The thing is, Dave, they’ve played the last couple of weeks. They can beat the lower place teams. They beat – who was it last – Western Knights last week. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Now, they can host Armadale, one of the lower rank sides. But when they get to the B clashes against your Inglewoods, your Bayswaters, your Perths… Dave: Yeah. Adriano: …and Sorrentos, that will be the key test for them now that big Liam Boland has left. Dave: Yeah, definitely. Yeah. So, hopefully they can get the goals, and I think they will. I think they’ll probably come away with a 2-1 victory. Adriano: For Armadale, well, they’ve just got to keep doing what they know best, Dave. That’s scrapping to get points, scrapping to get a result any way they can. Dave: Battling it out. Adriano: Battling it out. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Cyril Sharrock on goals is always a good start, always a good base for a team to have, Dave. He’s worth six to nine points a season for them, Dave, probably. Dave: Yeah, he is. Adriano: With the saves he makes. They’ve got the plays, Dave. They’ve got Tavernese. They’ve got Kuppusamy. They’ve got these plays, and Wilf Dinsdale last week got onto the score sheet. So, that’s a new name on the score sheet for Armadale. Nick Viaggio, so they’ve got players, Dave, who can do the business. Dave: They do. Adriano: It’s just where they turn up on the day. Dave: Yep. Adriano: But you’re going for Floreat, are you? Dave: Yeah, I think a 2-1 victory for Floreat. Adriano: Okay. Fair enough. Bunbury versus Perth, Dave. Dave: Yep. Adriano: Bunbury coming off a 3-1 victory against the NTC, and another home class. So, that’s two weeks in a row they didn’t have to make the trip up, and they’re staying in familiar surrounds. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: For Perth, though, bit of a form drop before they secured their victory last week. Dave: Yep. Adriano: But, this is the thing, Dave. This competition continues to amaze us. They went down 4-nil at Bayswater Perth. Bunbury, what sort of a test can we expect for Perth, Dave? Because this is the first time they make the long trip down. We’ve seen a couple of teams come unstuck doing it. Dave: Oh, yeah. Adriano: Will the champions slip up, Dave? Dave: Well, Perth will be flying down to Bunbury in the same private jet that Boland flew to the game last week. But it’s always a hard, hard game to go down to Bunbury. Just being put out to travel that far to play a game on the same day. I know it’s not ridiculously far and a lot of that, but I mean, to drive down on the same day and then play a game, it does take its toll. You do stiffen up a little bit. But the Perth players, I mean, they might be going down the night before, you don’t know. A lot of clubs do that, and that probably does help. Adriano: Well, surely a club like Perth, Dave, will be going down two days before [inaudible 00:05:39], you know? Dave: Yeah. They’ll be in the same five-star resorts. Adriano: Right, they’re probably there now, Dave. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: In the plane or in the spa right now. Dave: Training camp. Adriano: We’re slogging it out, recording the podcast with producer Roffo, and they’re in the spa, Dave, cruising around… Dave: They’ve been down there training all week. Adriano: …four or five days before the game starts. Dave: Yeah, probably. But Perth will be probably getting the win here. They’ve just got too much quality for Bunbury. Adriano: Well, now that Greg Sharland, Dave, of course, David Onoforo up front, add Liam Boland to the mix… Dave: Yeah. Adriano: …they’ve got to be starting to get back into contention. Because they’re not the favorite at the moment for the championship. Dave: No, definitely not. Definitely not. Adriano: But give it a month with the potential attacking trident here, Dave, and I tell you what… Dave: Tell you what, it’s… Adriano: …they could be back on track. Dave: Yeah. It could be. Could be. So, I think 2 and 0 to Perth this week. I think Boland will get a double. Adriano: Boland on the double. Dave: Big Liam Boland on the double. Adriano: All right. Balcatta versus Inglewood United. Dave: Yep. Adriano: Now, this turns into a very enticing clash, Dave, because Balcatta of course who had the week off, their match against Sterling Lions was postponed. They’re sitting in sixth position, three points behind Perth in fifth position, Dave. Dave: Yep. Adriano: But with that game in hand, of course. So, this clash against Inglewood, who’s co-leading the league of course with Floreat Athena… Dave: Floreat, yep. Adriano: …second on goal difference only, becomes now a very enticing match. Dave: Yeah, very enticing. But, I mean, Balcatta, they’re just – I don’t know what’s with them this season. They definitely haven’t reached the heights they did last season with the way they play. Now that they’ve lost Rosendale and he was the big one for us. Steven Burton, but now they’ve lost Steve Burton as well. Adriano: Higgins is gone. Dave: Yep. Adriano: Sorry, Thornley. Dave: Not Higgins. Thornley. Adriano: John Thornley. Dave: Yeah, he’s gone to ECU. So, they’re kind of understrength. They’ve got there Daniel Mi?evski is the one stepping up and putting away the goals for them of late. So, unless he can continue that form, I think they’ll kind of struggle against Inglewood, because Inglewood are definitely in the better form on both sides. Adriano: No Michael Baczynski, Dave, for Inglewood United, sent off last week in the victory… Dave: Yep. Adriano: …against Armadale. Dave: Yes. Adriano: But James Sammut and Alex Caniglia, Dave, the other goal- scorers from that game Baczynski scored of course in the first half. Dave: Yep. Adriano: They’re in two of the best plays in the competition this season, there’s no doubt about that. Dave: Yeah, definitely. I mean, I think Inglewood’s midfield pairing of David [Partridge 00:08:22] and James Sammut, they’re both extremely good players and they’re really good on the ball. I think they’ve run games for Inglewood. Adriano: Much like [inaudible 00:08:31] yesterday was. Dave: Yes. Yes, you could say that. Adriano: Are they the [inaudible 00:08:34] of this league, then? Dave: They are, and you know what? I thought last week, I was like, you know who’s the David Silva of the Premier Leaguers? Daniel Micevski. That’s what I think. Adriano: Yeah. Dave: I think he’s the David Silva of the Premier League. Adriano: What about the Casillas, Dave? Dave: Casillas would be, I don’t know. What do you think? Adriano: Could be Cyril Sharrock, Dave… Dave: Could be. Adriano: …from Armadale. Dave: Could be. Adriano: Yeah. Dave: All right. Well, there you go. Adriano: All right. Dave: Get them together. You’ve got a mini Spain going on. Adriano: Send it in listeners, all the Spanish players… Dave: Yeah. Like [inaudible 00:09:08]. Adriano: Like the [inaudible 00:09:09]… Dave: Well, no. Not just Spanish players. Other players. Adriano: No, no. Well, they are the benchmark, Dave. We want to see… Dave: Yeah. The benchmark. Yeah. All right. Adriano: Yeah. Let’s just base it on Spain for now, then we’ll do other ones in the future. Dave: All right. Adriano: Who’s the Torres of this league, Dave? Giron Marulanda, obviously? Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Actually, no. Dave: No, it’s not. Adriano: Because Marulanda’s scoring, Dave. Is he not? Dave: Yeah. I was going to say… Well, so is Torres. Adriano: Yeah, I know Torres… Dave: For Spain, rather. Adriano: Torres six months ago wasn’t scoring, Dave. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: But, yeah. But look, okay. Prediction four, that one Balcatta versus Inglewood United. Dave: Inglewood 3-2. Adriano: Inglewood, always up to no good, Dave. Eh? 3-2. Dave: Yes. Well, they will be up to good winning 3-2. Adriano: Sterling Lions versus the NTC. Dave: Yes. Adriano: Just quickly, of course. We don’t go too in depth with these. One is because only one of the sides are playing for points, Dave. Dave: Yep, and that’s Sterling Lions. Adriano: Of course, their clash with Balcatta postponed last week, so they’ve got a game in hand. It’s even more crucial for them, Dave, because they’re six points behind Perth in the fifth spot. So, especially if they’re going to drop points against the NTC, then they’re looking in a bit of bother. Dave: Well, if you go on recent form, since NTC have not had a win so far this season, and so the Sterling Lions will get the win. But I mean, Sterling should easily win this, because NTC are still waiting on that win. When is it going to come? Do you think it will come this season? Adriano: I don’t know, but you better not be “Lion” about the NTC. Dave: I didn’t get it. Adriano: It doesn’t matter, Dave. Lions. Dave: I get it. Adriano: Great. Dave: But why would I be lying about this? Adriano: I don’t know, Dave, because you are a fibber. Dave: I’m a fibber? Adriano: Yeah. Dave: Oh. Adriano: [inaudible 00:10:52] Dave: Okay. Adriano: All right. Dave: Moving on. Adriano: Okay. Dave: All right. Sterling 2-nil. Adriano: Don’t “Lion” to me Dave. Dave: I’m not. Adriano: You better not be “Lion” about that. See, that was a better context for that one. Dave: It was. Adriano: I don’t know why I didn’t wait for that. Dave: Oh, this is ridiculous. Adriano: All right. This is ridiculous. Sorrento versus ECU Joondalup in the northern suburbs derby, Dave. Dave: Yes. Adriano: Again, always passionate, temperamental, Dave… Dave: Yep. Adriano: …because these teams have a great history. Dave: They do. Adriano: But ECU Joondalup, their history, Dave, is going to have a big, fat relegation on it, if they don’t start to get things together. But they did against Bayswater, courtesy of David Foster’s stoppage time penalty, a 98th minute penalty. Dave: Yep. Adriano: But I tell you what, Sorrento would love to just start nailing one shot for ECU Joondalup, Dave. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: If they can get a win here, it makes the task all that more difficult. Dave: Yeah. But ECU, they’ve had some additions to the squad. Tommy Amphlett is finally playing well, and John Thornley is going to be wanting to score some goals to stay in touch with all those leading goal-scorers. He’s dropped down. He’s only on 10 goals at the moment, and he’s going to want to catch up. Adriano: Only on 10 goals, from the first 14 rounds, Dave. Dave: Yeah, I know. Adriano: I tell you what, that’s how amazing this league is, when we say a player has only got 10 goals from 14 games, Dave. Dave: Yeah. Well, there’s another one who’s got 18. Adriano: Exactly, that’s why it’s so amazing. Dave: I know. Adriano: There’s a player who’s sixth, or seventh or whatever, on the list of top goal-scorers… Dave: Yep. Adriano: …and he’s only got 10 from 14 games. Figure it out. Dave: Yeah. Well, the addition of Billy Quinncroft is… Well, a couple of years ago, I think – was it last year or the year before? He had a pretty good season with Sorrento, and he’s quite a good player. It just adds to their attacking force. I mean, last week they didn’t like the penalty in the final minute, but hopefully they’ll be able to get a goal or two against Sorrento. I think if they can, then they’ll definitely give Sorrento a run for the money. Adriano: Sorrento, of course, the only side, Dave, who haven’t drawn a game this season. So, it tends to be no level ground when they take the field this season. But for them, coming off the fornial heavy loss to Perth, Dave, will be key in bouncing back for them. Because, they want to say entrenched in that top five. They’re still only four points off top spot. They wouldn’t want to be dropping any of these unnecessary games and leaving themselves with work to do to secure their top five birth in the last month or six weeks of the season. Dave: Definitely not. It’s a kind of mustering game for both clubs here. Like you said, with this kind of rivalry, we’re going to be in for a cracking match I think. Adriano: “The chips and gravy derby”, we’ve termed it, Dave. Dave: Have we. Adriano: Coined it apart from the northern suburbs derby, “Chips and gravy derby.” Dave: All right. Adriano: All right. Finally, Western Knights versus Bayswater City. Both sides coming off defeat. Of course, Bayswater as we mentioned to ECU Joondalup. Western Knights, of course, to Floreat. Now, the big thing, Dave, when you immediately think about this game is that Gustavo Giron Marulanda will not be on the… Dave: Will not be on the score sheet. Adriano: For the third week in a row… Dave: Yes. Adriano: I think, because he’s not there. Dave: Yes. Adriano: Because, he’s been red-carded of course in that last game, controversially. Dave: Mm-hmm. Adriano: Yes. Dave: Controversially. Adriano: That’s a big loss for Bayswater. Dave: Yeah, a mess of loss for them. Adriano: An 18 goal man, Dave, the top scorer in this competition. Dave: Yeah. The other Gustavo, [inaudible 00:14:24]… Adriano: Caught 11 goals. Dave: Yeah. [inaudible 00:14:26], he’s on 11 goals this season. Also, [Yoqueras 00:14:30] popped up with a few goals here and there so far this season. So, it’s not like Marulanda is their only avenue for goals. Adriano: Well, no it’s not, Dave. No. Dave: Yeah, I mean, Bayswater are a great attacking side. Adriano: They’ve scored 42 goals this season, Dave. Dave: Yeah, exactly. Adriano: Well, Marulanda’s, that’s nearly half, but they’ve [inaudible 00:14:52], he is their main threat, but… Dave: Well, yeah. But he’s not the only threat. Yes. Adriano: …there’s 24 other goals there, Dave. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Yeah. Dave: Yeah, yeah. So I think they’ll only score half as many as they would without Marulanda in this case. Adriano: So that means only 60 [inaudible 00:15:06]. Dave: Yeah. But, yeah, I think they’ll come away with the win against the struggling Western Knights. Adriano: For the Western Knights, that doesn’t spell good news, Dave, because they’re on 13 points. Dave: Yes. Adriano: We’ll get to the full table in a sec. They’re only two points clear of bottom place DCU… Dave: DCU, yep. Adriano: …courtesy of last week’s results. Potentially could be bottom by the end of the round, Dave. Dave: Yeah, maybe. Did I actually give a prediction for Sorrento/ECU? Adriano: I can’t quite remember if you did. Dave: No. But I’ll go Sorrento. It’ll be tight. Adriano: So that means Western Knights won’t be on long? Dave: No. It’s going to be a tight game. I think a 2-1 victory for Sorrento. Adriano: What about this one? Dave: This one, yeah, I think Bayswater will win this, like 4-1. Adriano: 4-1. Dave: 0 of one. Adriano: All right. Are the kids still trying to play their way through for the Knights, Dave? Because it’s one of the youngest Knights squads we’ve seen for some time, one of the most inexperienced. Dave: Yeah. But sometimes you’ve got to do that, and then next season we’re hoping they’ll stay up. Then, those players who’ve come through that have had this experience at this level now for a season, they’re going to be better next year. They’ll have improved and as soon as the season’s over, with where they’re finished on the league, they’re going to be wanting to bolster the squad with quite a few experienced players so that this same thing doesn’t happen again next season. Adriano: All right. Just before we go, the table of course. Ahead of Round 15 Floreat Athena 31, Inglewood United 31, Bayswater 28, Sorrento 27, Perth 26. That’s the top five. Below them Balcatta at 23, but with a game in hand. Stirling on 20 with a game in hand. Armadale 14, Bunbury 14, Western Knights 13, and ECU Joondalup 11. There it is, Dave. Dave: That’s it. Adriano: Round 15 Preview Podcast for this weekend’s Football West Premier League action done and dusted. Dave: Done and dusted. Adriano: Don’t forget Div 1, Div 2 in the Women’s Premier League is on, and there are great things going on there too. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Get down and see anything. Dave: Just Saturday at 3:00, get to a ground around WA. Adriano: Exactly, there’s plenty of football. Dave: There’ll be something on. Adriano: There’ll be a ground near you somewhere, everyone. Dave: Yeah. Adriano: Won’t there. Dave: There will be. Adriano: Even producer Roffo has a local ground. Windy Hill, Windy Hill, pass it on. Dave: Football NWA, coming to a ground near you. Adriano: All right. Well, on behalf of everybody here at the thatwasagoal.com team, producer Roffo, of course, we thank him again. Dave? Dave: Yes. Adriano: Thank you to you as well. Dave: Ah, you’re welcome. I’m delighted to have shared this experience of presenting this podcast with you, Adriano. Adriano: It’s been fantastic, Dave. Dave: Yes. It has been marvelous. Adriano: Thank you very much for listening, everybody. Enjoy the football and we’ll catch you again next week.
