The vocabulary of crime and social values by Paul Davies
Episode in
The Ambassador
The vocabulary of CRIME AND social VALUES by Paul Davies
The pioneering French sociologist Émile Durkheim theorized that attitudes towards crime and punishment represent an expression of a society's core values. Certainly, there is a strong element of moral relativity; that which is considered legal or illegal, acceptable of unacceptable, varies from society to society. However, we must also consider the idea that, in most societies, law, justice and punishment are imposed from 'above'. Even in modern democracies, key ideas about crime and punishment originated in darker, more oppressive times and the idea still persists that the criminal justice system exists to protect the rich and powerful. With this in mind, it is interesting to examine the words used in English to describe various crimes and criminals. With crimes that are almost universally abhorrent, there is little ambiguity. The terms used express revulsion and are condemning in tone. Usually these crimes are related to murder and sexual violence and the vocabulary employed is narrow and resistant to alternative interpretation. It is common for murderers, rapists or paedophiles to be described as 'cold blooded' and as 'preying' on their victims, the implication being that they are somehow reptilian and less than human. The celebrated US author Truman Capote named his iconic account of a bungled house break-in, the murder of the family who lived there and the subsequent execution of the two petty thieves involved IN COLD BLOOD. Obviously the ambiguity of the title is deliberate. Who acted in cold blood? Was it the thieves when they murdered an innocent family? Was it the state when it executed the murderers? Was it both? Other crimes carry a wider, more dynamic vocabulary, indicating a disparity between public attitudes to crime and the legal interpretations that are imposed upon the public. They also provide an insight into popular culture and myth. For example, the noun 'thief', the verb 'thieve' and the adjective 'thieving' usually have negative connotations. A thief is normally thought to be an unpleasant person. If someone is described as 'thieving', the tone is almost always condemnatory. The thief is often thought to be the lowest of criminal categories and it is common to hear the phrase 'petty thief' to describe someone who, rather than being a 'professional criminal', is simply opportunist in nature. However, it is also common to hear the government, the tax department and banks described as 'thieves' or as 'thieving'. This would indicate a popular hostility to government and finance. The verb 'steal' has similar negative connotations. It is common to hear people complain that banks 'steal' their money. Likewise, the term 'pickpocket' has negative connotations. A pickpocket never steals from institutions, only ever the public. On the other hand, the noun 'Robber' has generally neutral or even positive connotations. A 'Bank Robber' is seen by many as a professional criminal and even, at times, worthy of respect. There is a famous song by the London-based punk band The Clash called 'Bank
Robber' which mythologises the professional, non-violent nature of the crime with doublenegative lyrics like "My daddy was a bank robber but he didn't hurt nobody." The noun 'Robbery' (used to describe the crime itself rather than the perpetrator) usually has neutral connotations and is used most commonly in reportage. Occasionally though it can be used negatively, usually to describe high prices, as in the term 'daylight robbery'. However, the verb 'Rob' is commonly used in association with mythic, redistributive folk heroes such as Robin Hood, who 'robbed the rich to feed the poor'. The noun 'Burglar' shares similar professional criminal connotations, as does the verb 'Burgle' and the noun 'Burglary', used to describe the crime itself.

May and Might the modals for when we are not in control
Episode in
The Ambassador
4-FOURTH WEEK
MAY or MIGHT
HMS
Her majesty’s ship
H – have to-used for the law
M — must – used for strong advice
S — should – used for friendly advice
Have to - opposite of - mustn't
Must - opposite of - don't have to
You have to wear protective clothing on the building site (you don't have a choice) 👉👷🏻♂️
you mustn't enter into this zone unless you have authorization (you don't have a choice)👉🚧
You should go and visit your aunt (you do have a choice)👍 💁🏼♀️
You don't have to take a bottle of wine if you go to a party (you do have a choice)👍🍾
Friendly conversation using have to: you have to go and see this new movie 🎬
Friendly conversation using mustn't : you mustn't worry I'm sure everything is going to be all right 🧘🏾♀️
We use have to for deduction and we use have to for obligations.
Because have to is the highest modal used out of this list for obligation
it is also the highest modal out of this list used for deduction:
"you have to wear protective clothing"
"Oh there was a knock at the door that has to be the postman.
When you go to Manchester you must take the M6. There was a knock at the door that must be John.
PART 2
CAN COULD MUST MAY MIGHT
Deduction language is also broken down into the family of can and could and the family of must, may and might
Capacity is a word which begins with C
Mystery is a word which begins with M
The words must followed by may followed by might all begin with M
so here we can remember that they are mystery words, things we do not really control
For example:
"oh it must be 1 o'clock"
"That may be my taxi"
"It might be time to check if the chicken is ready"
Capacity is a word which begins with C
For example the postman never comes to the door before 9 o'clock so if there's a knock on the door at 8:30
we say that can't be the postman because we can judge by the fact that the postman never comes so early to the door.
When judging the climate in the country we could say it can be very warm in the summer in Spain this is because it is
usual for this to happen we wouldn't say it may be very warm in Spain.
We also say it could be possible for you to have a table at nine in the restaurant.
If you are a Technically trained sales assistant it we would be more likely to use can or could
I think I know what the problem is that could be the pump or maybe we can imagine it's the ventilator
however if you are less qualified we are not so sure about something so we do not use can or could
May or might would be better for less certainty
For example
That might be the pump it might be the ventilator there again it may be some other thing which is not operating correctly.
Now a lesson about looming and lurking I would like to remind you that looming is about something on the horizon
it might be a good thing or a bad thing so if you have a photocopier you know that when you rent this machine you will need to check the
toner every six weeks because the problem is looming.
However if you don't know much about a machine and you're not able to discern what exactly the problem is
you would go with the M language so I understand that there's a problem with the machine and you said
there was a noise near the heat sink so that may be a problem with the circuit will need to send somebody
to check.
So here we could say that there's a problem lurking in the machine the problem is that we didn't see
a problem in advance.
When we don't know about something, and when it is hidden we say it was lurking.
Looming is when it's obvious and we know it is coming.
The difference between cancer and back problems unfortunately cancer is something that lurks
and back problems loom due to an accumulation of stress on the back on the spine.

Lesson one Tricking people
OBJECTIVE: a) Learn about unscrupulous tactics and the vocabulary and verbs related to them.
b) discuss any personal experience related to being a victim of unscrupulous tactics.
c) Invent a way of tricking people out of their money.
d) learn some other meanings of the phrasal verbs mentioned in this text and how they can be put to use.
Con artists confidence tricksters by Paul Davies
There is an old saying in Britain “if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is”. We have all heard stories about charming people, appearing out of nowhere, who smooth talk people, winning them over and buttering them up by paying them excessive compliments, using dialogue which repeats words like trust and loyalty using phrases such as “only you really understand me” or “you’re like the brother sister I never had” enticing them into putting increasing amounts of money into a get rich scheme only to disappear at the moment when the pay off is anticipated. Often, confidence tricksters also known as con artists will try to split up the mark’s existing friendships and family ties so that the mark also known as the victim can be more easily worked on. Many small confidence tricks or short cons involve appealing to people’s better nature for example the con artist asking for money or help with a sob story while in reality the money is needed for other purposes. However, larger, more elaborate cons known as Long cons usually involve appealing to people’s greed or lust. There’s an old saying “you can’t con an honest man”.
There is now a famous long con involving fictitious United Nations Aid money. The person claiming to represent a Third World government tells his or her mark, in the strictest confidence hence the term confidence trick and with excessive flattery, that there he or she has access to millions of dollars in United Nations Aid money but needs a foreign bank account in order to smuggle the money out of the country. If the mark / victim can help him or her by opening a bank account that he or she can access they will then split the money. He or she will also need a small amount of money in a bank account to cover expenses usually only 2000 or 3000 pounds and to make the accounts appear legitimate. Initially of course all will go well and the mark may even receive some money as payback. However the con artist will then explain that there is even more money to be made and the con becomes more elaborate. The mark will then reinvest the money he or she has made back into the scheme in order to make more. As the con progresses, the mark will be asked to put more and more money into the account as the stakes get higher and higher.
There is an interesting flaw in human nature that dictates the more a person has already invested in the scheme, the more they will invest in order to retrieve that money. It explains the success of the gambling industry. Of course, the con artist will become less flattering and more intimidating as the con progresses. As the idea of stealing money intended for famine relief is in itself highly immoral, the mark will be unlikely to go to the police or tell anyone what is happening and will instead, continue to throw good money after bad in the hope of striking it rich. Internet has proved to be a golden opportunity for many elaborate tricksters and online long cons are on the increase, some elaborate, some comically bad. If someone is an obvious mark we might warn them that a confidence trickster can “see you coming”. We will warn them that “you can never be too careful”.

Job Interview techniques with more information
Episode in
The Ambassador
Interviews are strange things you are basically talking about yourself to somebody who you don’t know so it’s very difficult to come across as being relaxed, my remedy for this is to wake up early on the day of the interview and go for a walk or read a newspaper or watch the news on the TV so that your brain is buzzing and you’ve got something to talk about.
So making you feel good in interviews, don’t forget every time you have an interview which doesn’t go well that’s just a learning curve and bringing you closer to the interview that will go well, so it’s always a good idea to try to program a few interviews to get yourself up and running .... if you go into a nightclub and you just stand on your own people won’t come up to you but if you hang out in the bar near a crowd, eventually people will eventually start talking to you, it’s the same for job interviews, if you get active and you go to one job interview and you’re able to come out with a sentence “yeah last week I was at Sony” or “two weeks ago I was in Thompson” it gives you more dynamism and shows that you are active and meeting different people, like a sculptor using different tools to sculpt a piece of stone and you will be sculpted by your encounters with people and that will give you an edge.
The training for a Bond movie for example Daniel Craig involves language studies, karate, swimming, driving, learning how to fall, learning how to ride, running, learning how to hold a whiskey tumbler, there’s so many things to learn and so many things to know so keep yourself active. When you get to the interview you look like you’re ready for the action.
First contact with an influential person....
What it comes down to is being able to talk to different types of people about all sorts of things. If you don’t seem interested or if you have nothing much to say it can kill a conversation in a few minutes. “Oh I must go and say hello to a friend I’ve just spotted” “excuse me a moment” would be the sentence you might hear coming during some lifeless conversation between you and another person. This is to be avoided.
Here are the rules of making conversation: find out about the other person’s hobby and let them talk about it. After speaking to someone who listens carefully, the reaction is positive “at last someone who is interested in me that’s nice I want to know when I can see that person again”. They will rate you as being patient, friendly and no doubt will be happy to talk to you again. The occasional nod or “yes absolutely” or even a chuckle or a smile can egg them on. Then keep up the conversation by adding to the same subject in a rational way, try to avoid being too off-the-wall; that is unless of course the conversation is a bit mad and fun and then you might want to go down that path. You might meet a threshold of their attention span and wish to break away from the situation so as not to bore that person or to embarrass them so don’t hold a conversation too long so it gives them the opportunity to maybe go and do something else if they have other engagements. Always have a business card at the ready in your top pocket which you can take out and give to them at the moment when you see the conversation has come to it’s natural end. A “nice talking to you” and then without any further fuss off you go.

A brief interview with an investment consultant.
Episode in
The Ambassador
I work in investment, I advise people about companies they can invest in. I make a financial analysis, there is an outlook that we receive, we use this in a meeting to see if the company has hit the target. There are often several situations why a company doesn’t manage to do this, this could be due to unforseeable events, delays or just simply they didn’t achieve what they were hoping to. We can make a list of the reasons why they didn’t achieve this - firstly they could be too sure of them selves or they don’t think they have to go the full distance with the project or maybe they overestimate the price or underestimate the time it takes. In this case they have to make up for the loss by bringing in a higher return in the second quarter and come up with a solution to maybe change the product and they have to come through this difficult period otherwise the people investing in the company will lose faith.
However other reasons for them not to hit the target such as a strike or a natural disaster.
My role in the company is to follow the company closely and sometimes to even visit the R&D center, get a feel for the company and to estimate the likelihood of this bringing a return on the investment in the company. I keep track on the progress and if there is a high risk investment then there is a high yield return. One such example would be a hydrogen powered motorbike, it’s very exciting because of the price of fuel and the scarcity of fuel and the odor of fuel (which) are three main factors for now and for the coming years. So investment in this project will give results due to the fact that one day petroleum will no longer be available. This provides me with some very positive points to sell when looking for investors in a project and they are likely to invest with the probability of having a high yield on their investment. I carefully choose the projects to make sure they are not going to be losing money.

Job interview
When you go for a job interview or an internship you are just another person on a long list so once you walk in you need to remember that the clock is ticking ... 🕰 first of all you must remember that you wouldn’t be there in that interview in the first place if your CV hadn’t got their attention, so this moment is just designed to concentrate, you must relate to subjects that are mentioned on your CV and build on them. You are there to get the job and the company employee interviewing you is just trying to find that if you are the person that could be the person they require.
If you don’t have work experience ...
So if you don’t have a job already and this is your first job you might find it a good idea to set up an association or club and this will bring you into contact with other people it will teach you organizational skills. Ones that tend to look good on your CV are: sports club treasurer, concert organizer, charity fundraiser these will show initiative, staying power and also showing that you have something to talk about.
Problem solving
Remember a problem, you need to talk about a time when you overcame an issue or a problem so that you can provide the interviewer with some details and without being too in-depth go through the problem “the truck broke down so we had to find a solution I called five different companies and in the end we decided to rent a truck but we needed to fix a price” try to give details that would be interesting which are as business related as possible, avoid domestic incidents also avoid talking about problems that were too simple. Show that you have problem-solving skills, rationalism, maturity, patience, responsability; this will show your initiative and energy, get up and your leadership qualities and people skills.

The way I watch what’s going on I feel like I’m punch drunk. Stare out the window for hours on end then walk into the village and know no one but that feels OK right now.
Since I emptied some bad from inside, I feel maybe something changed for the better but the demon spirit has almost left my soul. The demon connected to having time to get bad. Black denim white T-shirt a couple of chains and some money in my pocket. I fought for this rejection and loneliness do not bring good to a young mind. Loss of memory means you don’t remember some of the stuff that drags people down. Influence can be a nuisance, particularly if administered by someone with a complex. Having a clear head means brain rubbish is dead; you can get on with it. The next line is exactly that because I can’t remember much about what I said. I arrest my case. The future used to be some thing you learned in Grammar now it has a sideways feel about it. Lift the weight holding you down that’s the way to function 00 chilling is a way to wipe the disk clean returning to the heart of the action riding the train going to pick up a set of new of wheels feel so dead without speed the kick it gives lifting you from the monotony Greenlight the glow that lifts you by exchanging your mindset with neon strobes
Disfunction society, the need to survive, win or even harm. Justice done by the unjust, impacting lives; some finishing the days in jail, some sipping a cool drink under the sun. There is no true justice, not even close. A word out of place. We can rise above. (words & music by Rodney Prosser 2020)

Pop y Muerte
