Podcast Live at ITER: A Sun in a Bottle & The Way to Our Fusion Future ⚛️

A few weeks ago, months of preparation finally paid off. I finally got to visit ITER, an experimental #FUSIONreactor that might just end up being the biggest driving force for #GreenEnergy in the world. And I wouldn’t really call this “nuclear” power in the way that you are familiar with. For decades, what we’ve called “nuclear” is fission, which is splitting atoms. But when you smash atoms together to create heavier atoms, the story is COMPLETELY different and SO much safer and more powerful. ITER works with FUSION, just like the sun; and it’s a totally new game. And guess what?

I got to conduct a very special, on-site interview with Sabina Griffith, Communication Officer at ITER, for my #AscendantPodcast, where we explore the power and potential of ITER, perhaps the largest global scientific collaboration in history, poised to create technology that will allow an abundance of clean, renewable energy. Sabina brings us up to speed with how interest in fusion got started, why it stalled after the oil crisis, and why ITER is so important. Is fusion energy the key to our green, renewable future? Let’s find out. Listen to it all: RSS feed → Listen on Spotify → Further research: ITER website — ITER project’s main website, where you can book a free tour Geneva Summit) — the meeting between Gorbachev and President Reagan that Sabina mentions, the origin of the ITER agreement ITER podcast — enjoy some exclusive interviews and understand ITER on a deeper level with this podcast Andrew’s TikTok & Instagram — where he will be posting some ITER behind-the-scenes glimpses and other travels around France Mahalo & Thank you for supporting this one-of-a-kind podcast. 0305: Jennifer Rose Ipsen on Entrepreneurship, Organizing, & Clarity

Today marks a first. This episode marks the first interview I’ve done with a close friend, so it feels a bit different. (i.e. Even more fun than usual.) Jennifer Rose and I had been throwing around the idea of having her on the show for months, and I’m so glad it finally happened. The challenge: How do you make your job meaningful? Where does it make sense to compromise and where should you hold your ground? And how can #YinListening and embracing “what is” transform it all? Listen at the link below ↓ Or listen on Apple Podcasts directly → I’ve had the joy of knowing Jennifer Rose for about ten years now and watching her grow over this time has been a sight to behold. From a plan to join Doctors Without Borders at age 14, to majoring in International Studies and studying abroad, to realizing that something she was good at all along could make a great business, her life has taken some unexpected turns. It’s a fun, intimate look at entrepreneurship, to be sure. Perhaps you don’t have to love every aspect of your job, but it pays to make it meaningful, and Jennifer Rose has done just that. She demonstrates the power of building relationships and being at the right place at the right time. Even so, neither of us are entirely sure when we’ll feel like “Grown-Ups” — is it Peter Pan syndrome? When you listen, I’m sure you’ll come to your own conclusions. We wrap up with the topic of presence and embracing what is, including the reality of your space! (Which Jennifer Rose can help you with.) And the conversation continues in the aftershow next week on my Patreon page! By the way, you can support this podcast, my spontaneous Hawaii podcast, and ALL my work, on Patreon. Steve and I return today with an even juicier deep-dive, this time into beliefs-as-lenses, ethical non-monogamy, and subjective reality. 0302: John Roderick of The Long Winters on Acceptance, Aloha, & SPACE WISDOM

John Roderick – Musician, Podcaster, Writer Today I present a big, juicy conversation with John Roderick, podcaster, speaker, and co-founder of the band The Long Winters. I’ve been listening to his shows for almost 10 years—at this point, he’s a legendary podcaster. Listen at the link below ? Or listen on Apple Podcasts directly → In this episode, our conversation flows to some unpredictable places, sprinkled with just enough ALOHA, including a great object lesson on how green sea turtles don’t swim against the flow, they work with it. (Although John’s young daughter was apparently not impressed.) We talk about his transition from Alaska to Seattle, and John accidentally hits on an undercurrent, a theme of Season 3 of this show that I hadn’t realized before: the power of our Yin side and LISTENING instead of always doing. (We also learn about #SurfaceYIN.) By the way, you can support this podcast, my spontaneous Hawaii podcast, and ALL the great work, on Patreon! When you support my work, you get unreleased in-person interviews, including a brief aftershow with John!, behind-the-scenes photos, and full early versions of my Hawaii action memoir Ten Thousand Hours in Paradise. Check it out ???? ?  https://Patreon.com/HelloCrusoe/ For fans of John’s podcasts, they know that his father, a former Washington State legislator and World War II veteran, comes up from time to time. John’s impression of him is forever stuck in my mind, and in this interview, we get a bit more of the story behind his father encouraging him to “go practice the car,” often with hilarious results. John also touches on how not having a plan can be a good thing, freeing us from assumptions about the future. We start to wrap it up by talking about reconciling our inner voice with our outer voice, how craving creates a slippery slope, and a seldom-discussed side of ALOHA. Is there a Space Wisdom? John shares his thoughts, and I can’t wait to hear yours. Enjoyed this show? Could you please leave a review on Apple Podcasts? Even writing 1 sentence helps! 0301: Meet Jamie Catto, Musician, Filmmaker, Author, and World Traveller

Jamie Catto – Musician, Filmmaker, Author Today I am truly honored to present an interview I had with Jamie Catto, a musician, filmmaker, author, and traveller whose work as inspired me for nearly a decade now. ???? Listen at the link below ?   Through projects like 1 Giant Leap and his workshops, he’s helping change the world and show us that our oneness, as a people, is real. He is a self-described “walking permission slip” for people to show their true selves and even explore their shadow sides. The shadow side isn’t necessarily bad; just the parts we hide away out of fear. Jamie’s mission is to shed light on that. I’m am so grateful for Jamie for sharing some of his afternoon with me, during his film tour for Becoming Nobody, no less! He’s such a thoughtful, incredible human. 0207: Meet Zoë Eisenberg, Producer & Author living on Lava Land

Zoë Eisenberg — Photo credit: Geoff Souder I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the wonderfully creative producer and author Zoë Eisenberg. Listen at the link below ? Zoë had been in the back of my mind to interview for months, ever since I discovered the documentary that she helped bring to life, Aloha from Lavaland. I recall seeing it first on Kickstarter over a year ago, and the film quickly became one of my all time favorite documentaries. (I show it to whoever will share an hour of their time, and still haven’t gotten tired of it.) What is quite ironic is that we recorded this interview, and talked all about the lava flow of 2014, just a few days before a brand new lava flow began in Puna in early May. This new flow feels more aggressive and has already claimed over 30 homes. And, as I mentioned in the previous episode, has forced thousands of people to evacuate the Puna district. The flow has continued to spread since then. We still don’t see an end in sight, so this discussion of the lava is quite timely. (Thankfully I’m moving to an area unaffected by the flow.) We also discuss her reasons for being vegan, and her excellent vegan cook book she co-wrote with celebrity chef Ayinde Howell. And, in a surprising turn, we wrap right back around to one of the stories shared in the very first episode of Season 2, of the day when Sean and Ashley made their first vegan ice cream. It’s safe to say there are some good surprises in this episode. Once again, as you listen to this interview, I ask that you please send love/light, prayers, or whatever kind of positivity that resonates with you to the thousands of residents displaced on Hawaii Island, as well as the many who have decided to stay and are being exposed to sulfur dioxide gas being released by the new volcanic vents. The silver lining I see in all this is that events like these bring the community together like nothing else, and we learn more about that in this interview. Listen at the link below ? In closing, it has been an honor to interview these seven remarkable people. Season 2 was just wonderful, and I hope to do a third season later this year, but, as I mention at the end of this episode, that’s up to you. If I see enough iTunes reviews and impact, then I will take that as a sign to continue. Until then, I want to extend my deepest thanks to all of my guests. I’ve learned so much and have been so inspired by each of you, and I radiate the deepest gratitude for that. Mahalo nui loa! The download and subscribe links are below. 0206: Meet Harry Uhane Jim, Hawaiian Kahuna, Lomilomi Giver, & Author

Harry Uhane Jim – Lomilomi Giver, Healer, Author Two weeks ago today, I had the honor of interviewing renowned Lomilomi giver, healer, teacher, and author Harry Uhane Jim. Listen at the link below ? It was an interview that I’d been looking forward to for a long time. Last week, I edited it, equalized the audio, recorded the intro, made the show notes, and did all of the other steps that result in an episode that is up to the level of quality you’ve come to expect from me. Since then, the Puna District on the southeastern edge of Hawaii Island, near where Harry used to live, has experienced unprecedented volcanic eruptions right in the middle of residential areas, plus hundreds of small (and one very large) earthquake. As of this publication, thousands are under mandatory evacuation notice, and the future is still uncertain. No one knows when these eruptions will end or when the new volcanic vents will stop oozing deadly fumes. So as you listen to this interview, please send love/light, prayers, or whatever kind of positivity that resonates with you to the thousands of residents displaced on Hawaii Island. And if you happen to be on Hawaii as you listen to this episode, I hope that Harry’s words in this interview provide some comfort in these trying times. Harry’s healing energy is perfect for a time like now. I was first exposed to Harry’s work through his book Wise Secrets of Aloha, where he shares some secrets of the oral tradition of Hawaiian healing. In short, Harry is a remarkable storyteller and healer, and if you are at all interested in the Hawaiian Islands, you will be fascinated by what he has to say in this interview, from the secrets of the ancient walls of Pu’uhonua o H?naunau (the ruins of which are now preserved as a national park), to the immediacy of the potent healing practice of Ho’oponopono. By the end of the interview, we even learn a Hawaiian Chant! There’s a lot packed into these 59 minutes, and I’m so excited to share it with you. Listen at the link below ? Talking to Harry was an honor, and it was easily one of the most enjoyable and profound interviews I’ve ever conducted. I want to extend a huge MAHALO NUI once again to Harry for sharing some of his morning with us! I can’t wait to see you again, my friend. The download and subscribe links are below. 0201: Interview with Sean Crowne & Ashley Campbell, Nicoco Hawaiian Gelato – Part 1

Sean, Ashley, and Nico the Dog! Welcome to Season 2 of the Aravinda Show! To start this season off, I was honored to interview Sean and Ashley, founders of Nicoco Hawaiian Gelato. In this interview, we get to hear about their remarkable meeting in New York, landing on the wrong island (that turned out to be right), bootstrapping their business, and growing it to where it is today. Listen at the link below ↓ OR Listen on Apple Podcasts right now → For season two, I’m interviewing conscious entrepreneurs: business owners who are conscious of their impact on their community, the environment, and the planet; and I can’t think of a better couple to start with. Even if their gelato didn’t taste even MORE delicious than ice cream, I would have interviewed them because they just have a wonderful energy; you can really tell they radiate the Aloha Spirit. Update: PART 2 has been posted! Enjoy, and be sure to SUBSCRIBE so you don’t miss any of the rare interviews I have coming up. AS 102: Michael Coorlim on Taoism, Sleep Paralysis, & The Creative Trance

The Aravinda Show returns today. In this episode, I had the pleasure of having a long, candid conversation with indie-author Michael Coorlim, covering an impressive array of topics. He’s the author of over a dozen novels and shorter works, spanning from apocalyptic, to supernatural, to steampunk, and beyond. A huge thanks to Michael for being up for this interview and sharing some of his afternoon with me. He was a truly gracious guest, sharing a wealth of time-tested advice. This episode is the first recorded with my brand new Samson mic, as well as the first mastered with Logic X. So it only gets better from here. As you’ll see, we cover a lot in this interview, and I think you’re going to love it. AS 101: An Exceptionally Splendid Discussion of Everything with Garrett Lisi

E8: with each root assigned to an elementary particle field. One sunny afternoon on Maui, I had the honor of sitting down with theoretical physicist Garrett Lisi for an exceptionally splendid discussion of everything. When I’d landed on Maui a few weeks before, I’d hoped that he would be up for a short interview with a fellow truth-seeker, but I was shocked when he went so far as to invite me over for lunch. What I originally planned to be a rather short interview grew into a much deeper discussion of the nature of everything, whether or not there are other universes, and Garrett’s plan for a flagship “science hostel” — an idea whose time has certainly come. I had also originally planned to transcribe this interview into text, but after attempting it, I realized I didn’t enjoy the result nearly as much. Too much of the flavor and personality (not to mention humor!) of the moment was lost, so I set about painstakingly editing 108 minutes down to a tight 67 minute interview and ran it through a carefully-tuned compressor and equalizer. Today, I present the exceptional result, which features a surprise visit by his long-time girlfriend Crystal. At the time, I had no idea this would become the first episode of The Aravinda Show, but when I considered I’d been preparing for a proper interview podcast for months, I realized this would be a good “pilot” episode for the show, which is a natural companion to this blog and the rest of my work. So that’s what “101” means: season 1, episode 1. Our interview starts with a short discussion of how everything changed because of the internet (and specifically ArXiv.org), which helped set into motion the events that would lead to Garrett giving his now famous TED Talk. (The conversation really hits its stride about 16 minutes in, so keep in mind that it’s all building up to something, including some excellent observations on investing and leveraging wealth.) In fact, if you haven’t seen his remarkable TED Talk, that would be a good place to start. (It’s probably the most remarkably beautiful one you’ll ever see.) And then, enjoy the interview at the bottom of this article. Pretty amazing. Now, enjoy the interview, which is at the very bottom of this post. And thanks so much to Garrett for being so graceful and allowing this interview to be possible. I’ve interviewed a lot of people over the years, and I haven’t had that much fun in a long, long time. Garrett is a true gentleman. More episodes to follow, recorded with my new mic, no less. Scroll down to the bottom to listen, or Subscribe and never miss any of the interviews I have coming up: iTunes Feed or RSS Feed (If you’re having trouble with downloading the file below, grabbing it from the feed tends to be more reliable.) Questions Addressed A painting by Garrett’s girlfriend Crystal that I mention How does a physicist detach from any bias they may have? What does a Lie Group actually look like? What would a Theory of Everything tell us? Could the Universe be a massive simulation? Why are YOU the most atypical creature? How to find balance between work and play on Maui? What does it mean if our universe is infinitely old? Why is it unhelpful to make cosmological analogies? Are there really other universes? What is the smartest way to invest your money?
