Know Yo Pepo - Prof. Saul J. Abelson

The Art of Randomness — Today we are joined by Bright’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu professor Saul J. Abelson. He’s a landscaper by day and fighter by night. He has a black belt in Judo, Japanese Jiu Jitsu, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. His passions are plants and design, his bonsai, writing poetry, making music, jiu jitsu. Saul was brought up in a family of 6 in a religious Jewish environment and was actually doing security work for a local synagogue when he was offered free judo lessons by one of the community members. His sensei believed in training in multiple disciplines and he had black belts in Karate, Judo and Japanese Jiu Jitsu and encouraged him to try different styles. When Saul was a brown belt under his first sensei, he discovered Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Nathan Raaths. That was 13 years ago and he's been training in one style or another for about 20 years. Aside from that he’s a musician having played in a couple bands, he enjoys playing in his garden and being out in nature, and he also loves writing slam poetry and making music. Interestingly he's mixed music styles as much as he's mixed up his martial arts training. Saul has been in a punk band before and played at Oppikoppi bru. He's a singer, songwriter of country and western outfit and now he's about to release a rap album under the name The Truth Fairy.
