Turn Up the Bay, Episode 1: Sam Chase writes a rock opera
(illustration: Rob Goodman)
Remember two weeks ago, when we debuted Awkward Convos with Beejus? That was fun, wasn't it?
Well, we've got one more surprise for you...
Returning to our podcast roots, we're heading up a special spotlight series called Turn Up the Bay, which highlights local artists doing exciting, innovative, or just plain weird work here in the Bay Area.
Case in point: Longtime local Sam Chase, who, at the end of this month, is debuting...wait for it...a full-on rock opera, The Last Rites of Dallas Pistol.
But...why? What would compel someone, in this economy, to devote themselves to writing an 18-track rock opera? How much of the Andrew Lloyd Webber catalog did he consume in his childhood? Does the plot of Dallas Pistol tread too close to that of The Santa Clause?
Answers to these questions and more in our very first episode of Turn Up the Bay.

Download: Live This Month: December 2018 (Podcast #436)
In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Local musicians are performing at wealth of great concerts in the Bay Area through the end of the year. Having recently released his latest album, SF singer-songwriter Andrew St. James will be appearing at a Camp Fire benefit show at the Great American Music Hall this month, one of a number of opportunities this month to hear some local music and support fire relief efforts. Speaking of new albums, Rose Droll's first LP just arrived on SF's Father/Daughter Records, and she's part of a stellar night of Father/Daughter bands coming up at the Independent.
A number of creative duos are touring through the Bay this month as well. Cate Le Bon and White Fence's Tim Presley reunited this year for their second album of warped post-punk as Drinks, while Homeboy Sandman & Edan collaborated in 2018 to create some expansive, psych-infused hip-hop. Finally, the Midnight Hour may be a new name, but you are likely familiar with the work of its principals, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest and Adrian Younge, who have long and impressive resumes as composers and producers of soulful music.

Whether they call themselves post-punk, psych or indie pop, a wide array of Bay Area musicians cultivate lush atmospheres and textural depth in songs that are as sonically detailed as they are catchy. The Bay Area's "dream pop" standouts--eleven of whom are featured in this mixtape--include a number of promising new bands, like Topographies, a quartet whose stellar debut single is an exciting burst of fuzzed-out, propulsive rock.
Other highlights include Tanukichan, the project of Oakland's Hannah Van Loon, whose layered music weighs heavy with emotional impact, and Mare Island, a band of local music vets who incorporate string and brass arrangements into ambitious songs that call to mind both classic emo and shoegaze. We've also included here music from Pllush's first LP, which ranks among the year's best on the strength of its tight and noisy melodic pop, as well as expansive tunes from psych-influenced bands like Moon Daze and Fine Points.

Download: Mixtape: Highlights in Bay Area Latin Music (Podcast #428)
This episode first ran on KQED.org.
The Bay Area has a rich history of acclaimed musicians drawing from the many musical styles developed in Latin America. That legacy continues on today, with an array of Latinx artists incorporating cumbia, salsa, rumba, reggaeton, and Latin rock sounds into their work.
This mixtape showcases eleven songs from local bands and artists drawing from Latin music. What's perhaps most immediately notable on first listen is the diversity of sounds included here. Even though half of the artists in this mix are inspired in part by cumbia, each folds the genre into its approach in different ways, from La Misa Negra's heavy Afro-Colombian work to the proggy psych of Mala Greña. Psychedelia also informs the experimental compositions of Almas Fronterizas and the soul- and jazz-inspired Loco Tranquilo, while hip-hop and electronic music influence the music of Los Rakas, Soltron, Gina Madrid, and Bang Data.

Mixtape: The Bay Area’s Standout Hip Hop and R&B Producers
This episode first ran on KQED.org.
Download: Mixtape: The Bay Area's Standout Hip Hop and R&B Producers (Podcast #425)
The Bay Area's vibrant hip hop and R&B scenes include a wealth of talented MCs and singers, but it's often easy to forget the important behind-the-scenes role that music producers play in crafting great songs. A skilled producer doesn't just provide a instrumental backdrop for an artist to showcase their craft; instead, the best producers elevate their artists, adding emphasis that highlights a song's melodic immediacy or depth that demands repeat listens.
This mixtape showcases a dozen songs from local hip hop and R&B artists working with local producers. Some of the MCs in this set -- including Elujay, Versoul (fka Babii Cris), and Shy'An G -- are impressively pulling double-duty as producers themselves. And increasingly, talented producers like Ian McKee, Drew Banga, JULiA LEWiS, and Mikos Da Gawd are establishing identities as artists, not just skilled sonic craftspeople behind the boards.
Listen to the mixtape to learn more about all twelve producers spotlighted in this mix.

Mixtape: New Folk Music from the Bay Area

In venues around the Bay Area, like The Lost Church, Neck of the Woods, and the Octopus Literary Salon, Bay Area musicians are sharing new and exciting folk songs, emotive compositions full of lyrical storytelling and thoughtful instrumentation.
The stories shared by local folk artists are often personal, like Diana Gameros' new album interpreting Mexican songs from her youth, or Joseph Childress's LP drawing from his travels around the western United States. Marissa Kay was inspired to write the first song and title track for her debut LP, Trans is Love, after attending a candlelight vigil for a murdered transgender woman.
In addition to rich lyricism, Bay Area folk musicians display a deftness in incorporating a wide range of sounds. Zena Carlota's "Afro symphonic folk" blends the West African sounds of the kora, a twenty-one string harp, with chamber folk string arrangements to create captivating songs. Americana and country music threads may be found in the works of Chelsea Coleman and Catch Prichard, while Madeline Tasquin folds rock, jazz, and pop into songs full of dynamic twists and turns.

On the local front, we've included a song from The Kilbanes' acclaimed new Ovid-inspired rock opera, which runs at Z Space through later this month, as well one from There's Talk's new EP full of lush, dreamy electronic pop. Despite the many challenges that unfortunately failed to disappear at the end of 2017, one bright spot for 2018 is the wealth of emerging Bay Area musicians and bands poised for significant growth this year. This mix showcases fourteen of our picks for local artists to watch in the coming months, with highlights in a variety of genres, including hip hop, electronic pop, folk and punk.
Several of the acts included here released acclaimed projects in 2017. Rose Droll's debut EP Photograph introduced an extremely talented singer-songwriter who had, for years, accrued a wealth of home recordings but has only more recently begun performing live. Madi Sipes & The Painted Blue are getting ready to release a second EP; last year's Sex & Sadness received an endorsement from Elton John on his radio show. Oakland rapper ALLBLACK had a similarly accomplished 2017, capped by the launch of the KimSon EP in October and a nomination for "Rookie of the Year" by Thizzler.
The mix also showcases several exciting newer projects from great long-time Bay Area musicians. Curls was originally just a studio collaboration to support the latest solo recordings of Christopher Owens, but, by the end of the studio time, had emerged as a real band. Lapel finds local singer-songwriter Debbie Neigher moving away from folk and rock influences, instead exploring a new sound mixing electronic pop and R&B. And while you might not yet be familiar with the intense post-punk of Fearing or the thrashy hardcore of Primal Rite, these bands draw talented members from local bands Creative Adult and Scalped, respectively.
Listen to the mixtape to learn more about all fourteen artists included in this mix.

With each passing day, 2017 appears increasingly determined to solidify its place as the worst year in recent memory. Despite all of the hardships being experienced locally, nationally, and around the globe, the year has offered a wealth of impressive albums from Bay Area musicians.
For some of the notable artists featured in this mixtape, their 2017 successes built on the previous year's achievements. Jay Som followed up 2016's buzzed-about Turn Into compilation with her first proper LP Everybody Works. It's a terrific album of layered indie rock that has deservedly landed high on many critics' year-end lists. Berkeley's Rexx Life Raj returned in November with Father Figure 2: Flourish, a sequel that surpassed its remarkable 2016 predecessor.
Longtime local musicians also reached new heights in 2017. Lil B may no longer be as prolific as he once was, but his 27-track album Black Ken made a major statement about the artist's talent as both a rapper and, perhaps more surprisingly, a producer. With the LP, which was entirely self-produced, the Berkeley artist established that he isn't just an influence on newer rappers, but a peer at the top of his game. The She's also showcased their artistic growth this year, as 2017's All Female Rock and Roll Quartet paired the band's skill at crafting killer melodies with impressive sonic depth.
As much as 2017 continues to sink spirits during its final days, this mixtape also offers hope for new music to look forward to in 2018. Club Night impressed the hell out of us with the band's unpredictable debut EP, and the group is reportedly releasing an LP next year. There's also an album forthcoming from Ah Mer Ah Su, following her stellar 2017 Rebecca EP, and Nef The Pharaoh's long-awaited Big Chang Theory.

Mixtape: New Directions in Bay Area Heavy Metal
This episode first ran on KQED.org.

Download: Mixtape: New Directions in Bay Area Heavy Metal (Podcast #418)
With the Bay Area's history as a breeding ground for significant heavy metal bands, it's probably not a surprise that emerging Bay Area bands are continuing to find new and compelling ways to cross-pollinate metal's many strains.
Succumb and Funeral Chant, for example, are contorting black metal and death metal into unpredictable new sounds. The former band's first LP, arriving on reliable local label The Flenser, debuted to widespread critical acclaim; the latter group's murky, lo-fi demo tape, with its warped, unsettling sound, marks the band as one to watch.
Other local heavy groups, like Brume and Body Void, offer contrasting approaches to atmospheric doom metal. Brume fuses doom's heaviness to sprawling, psychedelic compositions, while Body Void layers its songs with abrasive noise. Perhaps the most high-concept of the doom-influenced bands included here is Squalus. Formed by members of Giant Squid, the group's first LP is a musical re-imagining of the story of Jaws.
This mixtape collects new and recent music from ten local metal bands, but it really only scratches the surface of the wealth of metal talents in the Bay Area. If you like what you hear in this mix, be sure to check out the Transylvanian Tapes label, which has released works from a number of the bands included here and whole bunch of others worth digging into.
