She talks about working with the hidden and voiced impact of racism in therapeutic relationships especially in supervision and touched on important themes in her book that relate to working in this area. Her book is called ‘The Challenge of Racism in Therapeutic Practice’. Visit our website for events, trainings and Forums: www.baatn.org.uk In this podcast I'm in conversation with therapists Bea Millar and Suzanne Keys who sent out an invitation to other white therapists for a gathering entitled 'Examining Whiteness, White Identity and Racism. They decided to offer this workshop because they realised that the unexamined thoughts and feelings about being white in a racist society creates obstacles to open and healing dialogues with people of colour and is slowing down the process of ending racism. They believe that white people need to take responsibility for working through these feelings with each other, in order to bring themselves more fully into relationship with people of colour and get on with the work of eliminating racism. We will be talking about their personal process in getting to the point of making this group a reality as well as the responses they received from others along the way.

In this podcast I’m presenting a talk given at the 2014 BAATN Conference by Zenobia Nadirshaw. Zenobia is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and has been in the world of Psychology for 38 years. She is very active in the field of Psychology, Counselling, Psychotherapy and ?Ethnic Minority and disability issues - including training of and supervision of psychologists and counsellors. She also lectures at national and international level and has published widely on these issues In her talk she explores organisational change in the light of our diversity culture. Along the way she articulates the difference between the Diversity agenda and Equal Opportunities, explores what valuing Diversity means in practice, and also enters into the sometimes tension filled area of the white supervisor and black supervisee relationship. www.baatn.org.uk

In this podcast I’m presenting a talk given at the 2014 BAATN Conference by Dennis Carney  Dennis has been running courses around equality and diversity for the last 24 years with a focus on Black Gay and Bisexual men. He was the chair of the Black lesbian and Gay project back in the 80’s which was, and still is, the only Black Gay and Lesbian Centre in the history of the world. He also appeared in the recent Channel 4 documentary ‘Reggae, Trainers & Olympics which explored the role of dancehall music and homophobia and was also an official spokesperson for the Stop Murder Music Campaign. In his talk he looks at homophobia and it's effects on the LGBT community and also the heterosexual community which is often the part of the community that gets ignored when looking at homophobia. He also looks at the effects of homophobia on Black and Asian LGBT communities. He brings our attention to the consensus statement on reparative therapy treatments put forward by the UK Council for Psychotherapy, The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, The British Psychological Society, The Royal College of Psychiatrists. Dennis invites us to find ways to challenge homophobia and assess our responsibility in this in terms of the personal and the political.  www.baatn.org.uk

In 1995 Poppy initiated and developed a Pan-London forum for Asian counsellors and professionals working in the mental health field called the Asian Mental Health Forum. This podcast features Sanjay Jobanputra who is a Senior Lecturer in psychology at the University of Westminster. He has worked in a number of community-based projects as a Asian Drug Worker, Alcohol Advisory Worker and HIV/AIDS Social Worker. Within the context of identity politics and developing a voice in this area his PhD explored the experiences of black and minority ethnic students studying psychology in higher education. His research continued for over twenty years and contributed to changes in the content of psychology course currently taught in his university.
