The price of survival is endless toil. – Barbara Ehrenreich, Running to the Grave, Harpers Magazine (March 2018) Jeanne Louise Calment, a Frenchwoman who died in 1997 at the age of 122 – (the longest confirmed life span on record) never worked in her life, but it could be said she worked out.  She and her wealthy husband enjoyed tennis, swimming fencing, hunting, and mountaineering.  Anyone looking for dietary tips will be disappointed, Calment liked beef, fried foods, chocolate and pound cake.  And she smoked cigarettes and sometimes cigars (she did however have a persistent cough in her later years).   What matters more the quality of your life or the quantity of your life? Does healthy aging constitute a rich life? Do good health habits guarantee longevity? So there is a growing trend in Japan of elderly women deliberately committing petty crimes—hoping to get caught so that they’ll be sent to prison.   Is this a last resort of welfare? Is there a difference is the frequency of “bots”  (automated accounts) and humans forwarding false information? Does a  “trending” news story mean  it is truthful. Is it ok to spread false stories? Where do 1st Amendment rights and the right to individual safety meet? How does panic and mass hysteria play into fake news? Ultimately who is responsible?

The ultimate surveillance system. Similar to the credit score system familiar to many Americans, except along with financial information, China’s version will take account of a person’s political activity, social interactions and purchase history.  This data is fed into a computer algorithm that calculates a citizen’s trust score. Is there a difference between what is happening in China and the US?
