Cartel Hour by Cask Cartel 46: George Remus with MGP's Master Blender David Whitmer
Episode in
The Cartel Hour
From Cask Cartel, this is The Cartel Hour.
George Remus, the man, the myth and the legend. Kind of similar to MGP, also relatively shrouded in mystery. One of the biggest distilleries you may never have heard of, this is what happens when the distillery behind many of the brands you know and love steps out and showcases their own brand. And of course, we’re joined by none other than MGP’s Master Blender, David Whitmer.

Cartel Hour by Cask Cartel 36: Terry Bradshaw - Hall of Fame Bourbon from Owensboro Kentucky
Episode in
The Cartel Hour
Terry Bradshaw. You know the name from football of course, both from his hall of fame worthy quarterbacking for the Pittsburgh Steelers and his energetic career in commentary. Or you might know him from commercials, books, country music albums, raising cattle, or even feature films and reality television.
But a hardworking man always has his drink of choice, and for Terry, that’s bourbon. Teaming up with master distiller Jacob Call with Green River Distilling in Owensboro Kentucky, and taking direction from spirits industry veteran Ryan McElveen, Bradshaw Bourbon was born.
We chat with Terry and the team about their first ever drink, the process of designing a bourbon from the ground up, and of course, we had to grill Terry on Super Bowl predictions.

Episode in

Raj Bhakta sometimes comes off as a larger than life character. As the founder of Whistlepig, he got a chance to take a neglected stash of liquid and create a brand. He’s taking that same playbook and applying it to Armagnac with Bhakta Brandy, with the same kind of Wild West spirit of leading boldly into uncharted territory.
We chat with Raj about this historic liquid, which has up to 150 year old juice, the story it has to tell as well.

Cartel Hour by Cask Cartel 33: The Blending Playground - Barrell Spirits with Will Schragis
Episode in
The Cartel Hour
How does one describe Will Schragis? Part boyish tinkerer, part spirits nerd’s sprits nerd, part whiskey professor, part world class writer of love letters to his craft. How would one describe Barrell Spirits? Well...the kind of company that would hire Will Schragis.
Barrell with two Ls is the kind of company the craft spirits industry needs at its forefront. A wild sense of exploration coupled with a desire to create something never done before that borders on reckless abandon. Kids in a whiskey candy shop that are guided not by marketing or profit margins, but by their own palettes. The kind of mad scientist genius that is both polarizing and invigorating, and no matter what the outcome, always discussion worthy.

Cartel Hour by Cask Cartel 32: The Spirit of Haiti - Clairin Haitian Rum with Kate Perry of La Maison & Velier
Episode in
The Cartel Hour
If you’ve been exploring the rum world, you may have heard of how incredibly different Haitian rum is, Clairin specifically, the name for the native rum of Haiti.
That being said, we felt Clairin was more akin to mezcal and other agave spirits, with over 500 micro distilleries operating on the island creating a wildly unique local spirit that remains relatively unexplored in the world of cane distillate. Natural, uncut, unfiltered and different from everything you’ve ever had before, it’s time to explore the world of Clairin with one of the most knowledgeable rum experts we’ve ever encountered: Kate Perry from La Maison & Velier.

Cartel Hour by Cask Cartel 31: Judging the LA Spirits Awards with Nicolette Teo, Amanda Victoria, and Joseph Solis
Episode in
The Cartel Hour
The world of spirits judging to most consumers means medals, recommendations, and this idea that someone knowledgeable somewhere said they liked it. But it’s far more complicated than that, as we learn on this episode with the LA Spirits Competition. When the San Francisco World Spirits Competition Managing Director Nicolette Teo decided to branch off and launch a spirits competition in Los Angeles, she knew she needed to keep all of the integrity that competition was known for while putting her own spin on it. We now have the first year of the Los Angeles Spirits Awards that focuses on diversity of judges, marketing support for the winners, and awards that hopefully better represent the wider consumer population
Along with Nicolette, we brought on two of the actual judges from the competition Amanda Victoria and Joseph Solis, both incredibly accomplished in the field of judging but also in the wider world of spirits. They guided us through exactly what they do during a competition, and we received the samples labeled exactly how they get them, tasting through multiple different categories of the best in show winners including best rum, best mezcal, best bourbon, best blended malt whisky and best single malt whisky.
We put our palettes against the best of the best at the LA Spirits Awards, and it was an absolute blast.

Cartel Hour by Cask Cartel 28: Sip Shine with Founder Kyle Search & Buffalo Chip with Will Reed and Rob Woodroff
Episode in
The Cartel Hour
Born on a family vacation in the mountains of East Tennessee, sipping moonshine around a campfire, Kyle Search, the founder of Sip Shine set out to put the Great Lakes into a can with a sweet moonshine that captures the spirit of a good old party with great old friends.
Kyle flew out from Michigan to Los Angeles to come sit down with The Cartel Hour, and what we found was a man who has made something authentic to him, his experiences, and his fun, and then sharing that with the world.
Don’t let the slim can fool you, this Ready to Drink cocktail, or RTD packs a serious punch at 20% alcohol, and we ran through the core 3 lineup with Kyle all while telling stories about how he built this brand from the ground up.
Plus, in a special bonus segment, we had a tasting of the Buffalo Chip whiskey, a blend of corn, wheat, and rye whiskey that has the loud engines of Sturgis in its blood. We chat with the master blender Will Reed and owner Rod Woodroff about creating their first bottle, what’s next for Buffalo Chip, and then we cut back to Kyle and create a cocktail with Sip Sine and Buffalo Chip whiskey together.

Cartel Hour by Cask Cartel 27: The Real McCoy - Barbadian Rum with Nathan Hazard
Episode in
The Cartel Hour
The Real McCoy, was he a man, myth or legend? Was Barbados the true birthplace of Rum? What do age statements on a bottle of the sugarcane distilled spirit really mean? Does a beard make you a rum master?
Nathan Hazard exploded onto the rum scene through his underground tiki parties and went on to become the brand ambassador for Real McCoy Rum, single blended rum that captures the authentic experience of the original rum runner during the prohibition era.
We talk about the entire lineup of Real McCoy as well as a special tasting of early distillate through a pipette into our glasses to a selection from their special rare releases.
