How Silent Expectations Create Resentment in Motherhood and Marriage

Have you ever felt hurt, resentful, or disappointed because someone you love didn’t do something that felt obvious to you? Maybe your adult child didn’t call. Maybe your husband didn’t notice you needed help. Maybe someone didn’t answer your text, remember what mattered to you, or show up the way you hoped. In this episode of The Courageous and Confident Christian Mom Podcast, Marci Owen teaches about the silent expectations many women carry in motherhood, marriage, and family relationships. These hidden expectations can become “secret tests” that other people don’t even know they’re taking. Using the metaphor of an owner’s manual, Marci explains how we often create invisible rulebooks for our children, spouse, friends, and even ourselves. These manuals may include beliefs like, If they love me, they should know. If they care, they should call. If I matter, they should notice. But when expectations stay unspoken, resentment can grow. This episode will help you understand how silent expectations, unmet needs, people-pleasing, emotional responsibility, and fear of rejection can create distance in relationships. You’ll learn how to recognize your hidden manuals, uncover the tender longing underneath resentment, and begin using your voice with love, honesty, and self-respect. In this episode, you’ll learn: How silent expectations create resentment in motherhood and marriage Why loved ones may be failing tests they didn’t know they were taking How to recognize hidden relationship “manuals” Why “they should know” can keep you stuck in hurt and disappointment How to identify the unmet need underneath resentment How to communicate clearly with love and self-respect Why using your voice is not needy, selfish, or controlling If you’ve ever thought, I shouldn’t have to ask, this episode will help you pause, get curious, and begin creating more honest connection in your relationships. You do not have to keep mothering, loving, or relating through secret tests. You are allowed to want what you want, name what matters, and use your voice with compassion and truth. 🌟 Useful Links & Resources from Marci ✨  3 Secrets to Instantly Feel Better Scroll to the bottom of this page for quick, powerful tips to shift your emotional state fast. 💖 Join the Self Love YOUniversity A supportive space where Christian women learn to love themselves deeply, show up confidently, and live with purpose.   👉 Click here to enroll or learn more 🧭 Book a FREE Clarity Call Want to feel more grounded, calm, and confident—starting now? Why You React So Strongly in Conflict — and How to Stop Shaming Yourself

Have you ever walked away from a hard conversation and thought, What is wrong with me? Why did I react like that? Why can’t I stay calm? In this episode of The Courageous and Confident Christian Mom Podcast, Marci Owen introduces the Reactor Part in Conflict and explains why your intense reaction is not your identity. Whether you snap, shut down, get defensive, cry, over-explain, or say something you later regret, your behavior may be giving you important information about your nervous system, protective parts, and unmet emotional needs. So many women carry shame after conflict, especially in marriage, motherhood, parenting adult children, or family relationships. They believe their reaction means they are too much, immature, unloving, broken, or failing. But what if your reaction is not proof that something is wrong with you? What if it is a signal that something inside of you felt threatened, overwhelmed, criticized, dismissed, or unseen? Marci teaches that you are not your behavior. Your reaction matters, and repair matters, but shame is not the path to lasting change. Through the lens of the Inner Relationship Method, you’ll learn how the Reactor Part tries to protect you, why pressure builds before emotional reactions, and how to begin responding with more self-awareness, compassion, and emotional steadiness. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why conflict can trigger intense emotional reactions How nervous system dysregulation affects communication What the Reactor Part is trying to protect Why you are not your behavior or your reaction How to stop shaming yourself after conflict Simple ways to repair, regulate, and return to your Resourced Self If you have ever felt guilty after snapping, shutting down, getting defensive, or reacting strongly in a relationship, this episode will help you understand yourself with more compassion and begin creating change from love instead of shame. Stop Measuring Your Life by the Wrong Things

After attending two funerals one day apart, Marci walked away with unexpected treasures about life, love, faith, family, service, and what really matters in the end. One funeral was for a dear friend who died at 60 after battling brain cancer. The other was for her husband’s 98-year-old aunt, a woman remembered for her love, humor, faith, and the way she made every person feel special. In this reflective and heart-centered episode, Marci shares the powerful lessons she took from both lives — not as a way to compare, shame, or measure herself, but as an invitation to live more intentionally. You’ll hear about the beauty of owning mistakes, repairing relationships, checking in with adult children, sharing what you love, serving quietly, laughing often, saying “I love you,” and remembering your divine identity. This episode is a tender reminder that people are not remembered for their weight, appearance, perfection, or worldly accomplishments. They are remembered for who they were, how they loved, and the mark they made. If you’ve ever used someone else’s goodness against yourself, this episode will help you shift from comparison to inspiration, from self-criticism to reflection, and from pressure to purpose. When Mother’s Day Hurts: Feeling Forgotten, Disappointed, or Unappreciated

Mother’s Day can bring up more than we expect. For some moms, it feels sweet and meaningful. For others, it can feel tender, disappointing, complicated, or painful long after the day is over. In this compassionate and empowering episode, Marci Owen speaks directly to the mother who felt forgotten, unseen, unappreciated, or let down after Mother’s Day — and gently helps her come back to herself with strength. Marci explores why Mother’s Day can feel like an emotional report card and how a missed call, lack of visit, short text, or unmet expectation can stir deeper questions about motherhood, worth, love, and whether we’ve done enough. But this episode does not leave you sitting in the ache. Instead, Marci invites you to step into a more grounded and self-led way of mothering. Through her “Release and Return” practice, you’ll learn how to release resentment, silent expectations, emotional gripping, and the need to measure your motherhood by other people’s actions — and return to your values, your voice, your self-respect, and your strength. This is a message for the mom who is ready to stop waiting for imperfect people to validate her worth and start mothering from strength. Marci encourages you to speak up for what you want, honor your own heart, stop abandoning yourself, and step into your role as the mother, woman, and matriarch you are becoming.  Inside this episode, you’ll learn: Why Mother’s Day can trigger anxiety, disappointment, sadness, guilt, resentment, or old wounds How to separate what happened from what you made it mean Why your children’s thoughtfulness, maturity, or effort is not the measure of your motherhood How to release what is not yours to carry and return to who you are How to ask for what you want without feeling selfish or needy How to mother from strength with love, truth, and self-respect How to stop waiting to be celebrated and begin honoring yourself If Mother’s Day hurt, this episode will help you feel seen, steady, and empowered. You are still here. You are still loving. You are still learning. And you are allowed to come back to yourself. Why I No Longer Call Myself a Self Love Coach

What if nothing is wrong with you? What if the part of you that overreacts, shuts down, spirals, people-pleases, or tries to control everything is not broken — but actually trying to protect something tender inside of you? In this meaningful and illuminating episode, Marci Owen unveils her Inner Relationship Method™ and shares why she is no longer calling herself a Self-Love Coach, but an Inner Relationship Coach. Self-love is still at the heart of her work, but Marci explains that true self-love is not just affirmations, bubble baths, or thinking positive. It is the way you relate to what is happening inside of you. Marci introduces the core pieces of her Inner Relationship Method™: the Wounded Child, protective parts, protective patterns, the nervous system, and the Resourced Self. You’ll learn why so many women feel stuck in cycles of self-criticism, anxiety, emotional overwhelm, people-pleasing, control, overthinking, shutting down, or trying to carry everything alone — and why those patterns are not proof that you are failing. They are signs that something inside of you learned how to survive. In this episode, Marci also explains why mindset work alone can only take you so far. If your nervous system is dysregulated, your protective parts and patterns get louder, and your Resourced Self becomes harder to access. That is why nervous system regulation is such an essential part of healing. Marci teaches how Calm Center, Team Hyper, and Team Hypo help you understand what is happening in your body before you react, spiral, or shut down.  You’ll also receive a simple Inner Relationship Check-In and Safety Reset to help you pause, connect with your body, notice what part or pattern may be trying to protect you, and begin meeting yourself with safety, compassion, and love. This episode is for the woman who has spent too long asking, “What is wrong with me?” and is ready to begin asking, “What is happening inside of me?” You are not broken. You are beautifully complex. And you can learn to lead your inner world with compassion, safety, and love. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why Marci is shifting from Self-Love Coach to Inner Relationship Coach What The Inner Relationship Method™ is and why it matters How the Wounded Child, protective parts, and protective patterns work together Why people-pleasing, controlling, escaping, overthinking, and shutting down may be protective patterns Why your nervous system determines who is leading inside of you How Calm Center, Team Hyper, and Team Hypo affect your reactions Why your Resourced Self can lead with calm, compassion, curiosity, clarity, confidence, and connection A simple Inner Relationship Check-In you can use this week How to begin coming home to yourself instead of judging yourself 🌟 Useful Links & Resources from Marci ✨  3 Secrets to Instantly Feel Better Scroll to the bottom of this page for quick, powerful tips to shift your emotional state fast. If a Part Is Driving, Your Body Knows First

Do you ever shut down, overexplain yourself, spiral in your thoughts, snap, people-please, or suddenly feel the need to control everything? What if those reactions are not just “your personality” or proof that something is wrong with you? In this episode, Marci Owen explains how your body often knows a protective part has taken over long before your mind does. Through the lens of nervous system regulation, parts work, and inner child healing, Marci helps you understand why certain emotional reactions feel automatic and how those patterns may have formed years ago to keep you safe.  You’ll learn how your body sends early warning signals like tightness in your chest, a pit in your stomach, buzzing energy, heat in your face, or the sudden urge to fix, defend, explain, numb out, or disappear. These cues matter. They may be signs that a wounded part of you has been activated and a protective pattern has stepped in.  Marci also talks about the wounded child, the protective parts that form around pain, and why awareness is the first step in helping your Resourced Self come back into leadership. This episode will help you stop making your reactions mean you are flawed and start getting curious about what your body is trying to tell you.  If you’ve ever wondered: Why do I overexplain myself? Why do I people-please even when I do not want to? Why do I shut down in hard conversations? Why do I spiral or get defensive so fast? Why does my body react before I even know what is happening? This episode will help you understand what may be going on underneath it all.  In this episode: how the body signals activation before behavior shows up why protective parts are not bad, but trying to help how nervous system triggers connect to old emotional pain why awareness creates space for healing how to begin responding from your Resourced Self instead of autopilot patterns  🌟 Useful Links & Resources from Marci ✨  3 Secrets to Instantly Feel Better Scroll to the bottom of this page for quick, powerful tips to shift your emotional state fast. 🧭 Book a FREE Clarity Call Want to feel more grounded, calm, and confident—starting now? What if Your Inner Critic Thinks It’s Helping?

What if your inner critic is not trying to tear you down… but trying to protect you? In this episode, Marci shares a powerful reframe for the inner critic and why that harsh voice in your head may not be proof that something is wrong with you. It may be a protective part that learned long ago that criticism could keep you safe from rejection, failure, embarrassment, or feeling like too much.  Marci walks through why self-criticism can feel normal, especially for women who grew up with pressure, comparison, high expectations, or emotional invalidation. She also explains why being hard on yourself may feel productive in the moment, but is not the path to lasting confidence, peace, or real change.  You’ll learn how to notice your inner critic with curiosity instead of shame, how to understand what it may be trying to protect you from, and how to let your Resourced Self step in with honesty, compassion, and stronger leadership.  If you have ever wondered why you are so hard on yourself, why self-talk can feel so cruel, or how to actually shift that pattern, this episode will help you feel seen and give you a gentle next step. In this episode, we talk about: why the inner critic is often a protective part how self-criticism forms in response to pain, pressure, and fear why harshness can feel familiar and even productive the difference between criticism and true self-leadership how to respond with compassion instead of self-attack one simple question to ask when your inner critic gets loud Reflection question from this episode: What is my inner critic trying to protect me from right now? He Knows Your Name: Mary Magdalene, Easter, and the Love of Jesus Christ

What would it feel like to know that Jesus Christ sees you personally, knows your name, and loves you more than you can imagine? In this special Easter episode, Marci sits down with Alessa Mousques, who recently portrayed Mary Magdalene in an Easter video produced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But this conversation is about more than acting. It’s about faith, transformation, and the deeply personal love of Jesus Christ.  Alessa shares what it was like to step into the story of Mary Magdalene and how that sacred experience affected her heart, her faith, and the way she sees herself. Together, Marci and Alessa talk about imperfection, worth, healing, and the powerful truth that Jesus does not abandon us. He is there, even in the moments we feel unseen, unsure, or not enough.  This episode is a tender Easter conversation about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the love He has for each of us, and the hope that comes from turning to Him. If you’ve ever wondered whether the Savior really knows you personally, this episode will remind you that He does. He knows your name. He loves you. Motherhood, Guilt, and Grace: A New Way to Measure Success

What if the way you’ve been measuring success as a mother isn’t actually the measure that brings peace? So many of us carry quiet expectations about what a “good mom” looks like—how our kids should turn out, how close we should be, how involved we should be, and how much they should need us. And when real life doesn’t match that picture, it can leave us feeling like we somehow failed. In this episode, I’m joined by three women from Self Love YOUniversity for a real and honest conversation about redefining success as a mother. Together we talk about the pressure many parents feel to measure their worth by their children’s outcomes—grades, behavior, church activity, relationships, achievements, or life choices. But what happens when we step back and ask a different question? What if success in motherhood isn’t about outcomes we can’t control? In this conversation, we explore how fear can disguise itself as love and responsibility, why so many moms carry unnecessary guilt, and how redefining success can bring more compassion, freedom, and peace to parenting. In this episode, we talk about: redefining success as a mother letting go of outcome-based motherhood releasing guilt and unrealistic expectations giving compassion to your past self as a mom how nervous system healing supports parenting loving your children as they are—not just as you hoped they would be You’ll hear honest reflections from mothers in different seasons of parenting—from young kids to adult children—and the powerful shifts that happen when we stop grading ourselves and start showing up with more love, presence, and compassion. If you’ve ever wondered if you’re doing enough as a parent, this conversation will remind you that you’re probably doing better than you think you are. And if you’re craving more support, healing, and growth in this area, I invite you to join us inside Self Love YOUniversity, where we continue these conversations and learn tools to bring more peace, compassion, and confidence into motherhood and life. 💖 Join the Self Love YOUniversity A supportive space where Christian women learn to love themselves deeply, show up confidently, and live with purpose.  👉 Click here to enroll or learn more 🌟 Useful Links & Resources from Marci 🔗 Visit My Website:  To learn more visit www.marciowen.com 🧭 Book a FREE Clarity Call Want to feel more grounded, calm, and confident—starting now? Because I Can: A Powerful Reminder to Live with Gratitude and Joy

Today’s episode is being released on a Wednesday instead of my usual Friday—because today matters. March 4th marks 16 years since my younger sister Heather passed away from colon cancer. Every year on this day I honor her with something I call “Because I Can” Day. It’s a simple practice that has become a powerful reminder to live with gratitude, awareness, and appreciation for the everyday things we often take for granted. In this unfiltered and unedited episode, I invite you to join me in remembering that being here—right now—is a privilege. Because we can. We can go for a walk. We can call a friend. We can hug our spouse. We can smile at someone in the grocery store. We can sit in the sun and feel the warmth on our face. When we begin noticing these small privileges, something shifts. Life feels fuller. Gratitude grows. Joy becomes easier to find. Throughout the episode, I also share a beautiful reflection about “painting joy across the sky”—a reminder that joy isn’t dependent on perfect circumstances. It’s something we can choose, cultivate, and spread. I’m inviting you to join me this week in doing things because you can and sharing what that looks like for you. 📸 Take a picture and tag me on Instagram @marci.owencoaching so we can inspire each other. And if you’d like to hear the full story about my sister Heather and how “Because I Can” began, go back and listen to Episode 10: Because I Can. 👉 I’ve included the link here for easy access. Redefining Success as a Mother

Somewhere along the way, many mothers absorbed a quiet, heavy belief: If my child struggles… if they question their faith… if our relationship feels strained… it means I failed. In this powerful and compassionate episode, Marci challenges that narrative and invites you to redefine what success as a mother truly means. Drawing from personal experience, coaching conversations, church culture, and timeless quotes like “No other success can compensate for failure in the home,” Marci explores how we may have unintentionally tied our worth—and our motherhood—to outcomes we were never meant to control. What if success isn’t about how your children turn out… but about how you continue to show up? In this episode, you’ll discover: How church culture and misinterpreted teachings can create unnecessary pressure Why your child’s agency does not equal your failure A healthier, more empowering definition of success and failure What “not giving up” actually looks like (and why stepping back isn’t quitting) How love—not control—is the true measure of faithful motherhood A simple nervous system regulation sequence to help you respond instead of react Marci shares tender stories, practical tools, and a grounding reminder: You are responsible for how you show up—not for controlling how someone else grows. If you’re a Christian mom carrying guilt, fear, or shame about your child’s choices… If you’ve questioned whether you “did it wrong”… If you’re exhausted from trying to be perfect… This episode will feel like a deep exhale. You have not failed. If you are still loving, still present, still trying—you are succeeding. You are one decision away from showing up with more peace, confidence, and freedom. Episode Website

This episode is a perspective-shifting reshare from my first year of podcasting in 2023—a message that continues to matter deeply. After being sick for much of January and navigating recovery, I found myself returning to a teaching that transformed how I relate to my work, my relationships, and my inner peace. When creativity feels foggy and my body still recovering, sometimes the wisest thing to do is not to force—but to listen. And this message kept asking to be shared again. In this episode, I revisit a powerful concept from Byron Katie’s work: the three types of business—God’s business, other people’s business, and your business. When we confuse these, we create unnecessary suffering, frustration, and separation. When we learn to stay in our own business, something profound happens—we reclaim our power, reconnect with ourselves, and experience more peace, clarity, and self-love. We’ll explore: How being mentally in other people’s business creates resentment and disconnection Why trying to control outcomes puts us in God’s business—and increases anxiety What it truly means to stay in your business without becoming detached or indifferent How this distinction supports self-love, boundaries, emotional peace, and confidence Practical steps you can take to bring this concept into everyday life If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, worried about loved ones, frustrated with outcomes you can’t control, or disconnected from yourself, this episode offers a stabilizing reframe that can gently bring you back home—to your life, your power, and your peace. As you listen, I invite you to ask yourself: Whose business am I in right now—and what would it feel like to come back to my own? This is how courageous and confident women live—with awareness, self-trust, and love. 🌟 Useful Links & Resources from Marci 🔗 Visit My Website:  To learn more visit www.marciowen.com 💖 Join the Self Love YOUniversity A supportive space where Christian women learn to love themselves deeply, show up confidently, and live with purpose.  👉 Click here to enroll or learn more 🧭 Book a FREE Clarity Call Want to feel more grounded, calm, and confident—starting now? Living by Design, Not Default: Choosing Your Word for the Year

What if this year wasn’t about pushing harder, proving more, or chasing another list of resolutions? In this episode, Marci Owen invites you into a gentler, more powerful way of moving through the year: living by design, not by default. Instead of goals that create pressure, she introduces the practice of choosing one meaningful word—a word that becomes your guide, your compass, and your way back to yourself when life feels busy, overwhelming, or uncertain. You’ll learn: Why a word is different from a goal—and how it supports your nervous system rather than stressing it What it means to live by default versus living with intention How to “listen” for your word instead of forcing one from your head Reflective questions to help you discover the quality your soul is asking for this year Simple ways to return to your word when you forget or feel off course Marci shares personal stories, practical reflection prompts, and a compassionate, faith-centered perspective to help you choose a word that doesn’t demand more from you—but brings you home. If you’re longing for clarity, self-trust, and a deeper relationship with yourself this year, this episode is your invitation to begin. ✨ Ready to live by design, not default? Press play. In the quiet space between Christmas and New Year’s, there’s often a subtle pressure to reinvent yourself, set new goals, or start over. But what if that’s not what you actually need? In this episode, I offer two gentle yet powerful clarifying questions designed to help you carry yourself into the new year with intention, compassion, and clarity—without fixing, forcing, or pushing. You are not starting from scratch. You’re starting from experience, wisdom, and growth. If you’re craving a way of entering the new year that feels supportive instead of demanding, this episode is for you. ✨ Mentioned in this episode: Self Love YOUniversity — a monthly space to practice nervous system regulation, soften old stories, and come home to who you already are. How to Regulate Before You Relate: Staying Calm, Grounded, and Loving During the Holidays

Holiday gatherings can bring out the very worst version of us — the anxious one, the shrinking one, the people-pleasing one — but what if that isn’t the real you at all? In this first episode of Marci's holiday-mini-series, Marci teaches you the life-changing tool that can give you confidence to show up in every holiday moment: Regulate Before You Relate. If you’ve ever walked into a family dinner, work party, or church gathering feeling tense, braced, overthinking, or wishing you could just disappear… this episode will feel like a breath of fresh air. Marci breaks down the 5 R’s of Regulate Before You Relate — Recognize, Reveal, Release, Reassure, and Relate — a simple, under-one-minute practice that helps you stay grounded, calm, and connected to your resourced, authentic self rather than your protective patterns. You’ll learn: Why your nervous system reacts in social or family settings How dysregulation shows up as bracing, shrinking, pressure-to-perform, or overthinking The exact words to say to yourself to shift out of survival mode How to walk into ANY holiday moment with steadiness and quiet confidence How to use this tool with family, friends, kids, spouses, or even tricky conversations Why regulation is the secret to showing up as who you really are Marci also shares a personal story about navigating her own activation in social situations — and the difference it made when she regulated first. This episode is not just “holiday advice.” It’s a life skill. One that will change how you show up in rooms, relationships, and moments that matter. PLUS — Marci introduces her Holiday Glow Up Bundle, a special, limited-time invitation to join Self-Love YOUniversity and step into 2026 with clarity, steadiness, support, and belonging. If you want to feel more grounded, more present, and more like yourself this holiday season… this episode is for you.
