20: HR, EDI Strategy and Employee Activism

It’s my absolute pleasure to bring you a beautiful soul that I’ve been fortunate to get to know over this past year. She’s originally a fellow northern lass, as you’ll detect from her warm and friendly accent. But she’s so much more than that. She’s insightful, a true people person through and through, and frankly age defying because she certainly looks younger than me. I’m talking about the wonderful Janet Houlis from VALO Consultancy. Now Janet has over 33 years of experience in HR, People and Change Management Consultancy. She partners with clients to develop change management, EDI strategies, and business transformation initiatives. Through her consultancy work, Janet helps businesses take meaningful steps towards being equitable, inclusive and diverse organisations, whilst keeping their employees at the heart of everything they do. In this episode we discuss the two types of HR professional, HR’s role in the anti-racism movement, which groups are being left off the EDI agenda, and the rise of employee activism. Those working in HR will not want to miss this valuable and thought provoking interview.  So, grab yourself a drink, get comfortable, hit play and let's get into this week's courageous conversation. You can connect with Janet here: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/janet-houlis Email - janet@valoconsultancy.com Feedback is always welcome, and I truly hope you enjoy tuning in to the show. 17: NVD Stories - Life with Lupus

This week I had the pleasure if interviewing Regine Demuynck.  Having moved to England in 1978, Régine has had a number of careers throughout her professional life. Alongside her regular employment, she has been a self-employed alternative therapist since 2004. In the last 12 years, she was both a teacher and a tutor of French and Spanish, and her love of words has led her to a new path: writer of fiction.  She writes under the name of Andrée Roby and has published 3 books since 2019. Now just like me, Regine is someone who lives with a non-visible disability. In 2013 she was diagnosed with various auto-immune diseases which have since impacted her life in many ways. In this interview, Regine discusses some of her experiences of living and working with a non-visible disability. Those of you who know my backstory know that this topic is incredibly close to my heart because of my own experience, some of which I also share in this episode. Hopefully this episode will help you become more informed around some of the ways people can be affected by this issue, and why it’s matters that you’re providing the right support as an employer, colleague, friend, or family member. A true must listen episode for HR Directors, and anyone in a people management position.  So, grab yourself a drink, get comfortable, hit play and let's get into this week's courageous conversation. 15: Finding Freedom by Creating Headspace

This week I’m talking to Sue Tappenden, from Headspace for Change. Sue is a transformational whole-life coach, and a natural-born trouble-shooter with a practical approach to problem solving.  She helps stressed, working women take back control of their lives in a deeper, permanent, and life-changing way through coaching, counselling, and mentoring. She works with smart, capable women who are working hard to juggle it all. They want their life to feel different but nothing they’ve tried in an effort to feel better makes any sustainable difference. Whether it’s working with Sue 1:1 or as part of her Group Programme, she helps women make fundamental changes to how they are running the show, so they can take back control in a way that fits who they are. Sue’s style is relaxed, engaging, and with some humour thrown in. Unlike many other coaches who focus on changing what their clients are doing, she helps women make changes to the person they are being. This makes the results effective and long-lasting. Sue specialises in individual, organisational and system change. It all happens through human beings and their relationships - and that’s her thing!  She’s been a senior leader in the public sector and led large-scale change projects, is a qualified HR professional and continues to work with organisations across a range of sectors through her successful consultancy practice.  Sue’s work with all clients is informed by her MSc in Change Agent Skills and Strategies, HR/OD background, consulting experience and plenty of ongoing personal and professional development. Sue appears regularly as an Agony Aunt for Pick Me Up magazine, helping readers to deal with cheating husbands, body image issues, concerns about their children, and all the other everyday things we worry about!  She loves this work because it enables her to help others through a different and far-reaching media, alongside the podcasts and other speaking opportunities that she loves to do. Our conversation points included advice for leaders and HR professionals on prioritising their own wellbeing, healing fractured relationships, and the importance of creating psychological safety in the workplace. You can connect with Sue here: Clubhouse - @suetappenden Instagram - @sue_tappenden  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Headspaceforchange/ LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/suetappenden/ Website - www.headspaceforchange.com Feedback is always welcome, and I truly hope you enjoy tuning in to the show. 14: Breathing New Life into Well-being

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week here in the UK, I had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Crinnion. Michael is the brains behind an innovative well-being companion called Luma³. Luma³ has been designed to boost your well-being with simple, easy guided breathing techniques. Best of all, Luma³ allows you to practice conscious breathing and establish a healthy habit, without having to use a mobile phone, which can often be a cause of stress and tension in itself. Think of it as a tool to give your brain a 5 minute reboot, in between 55 minute focussed work sessions. Michael, a former Teacher, is deeply passionate about mental health, well-being, and supporting young people in becoming their best self. In fact, he’s so committed that for every 10 Luma³ he sells, he donates one to a school. To hear us discussing all this and so much more, hit the play button now. Whether you’re someone who cares about your own well-being, or your profession involves taking responsibility for the well-being of others, I promise you’ll enjoy listening in to our chat. 13: The Future is Flexible

In this episode I discuss all things recruitment, flexible working and inclusion, with Simon Gregory from GPS Return. As well as being a father of 2, Simon is also the Managing Partner at GPS Return which specialises in helping professionals return to work across Yorkshire and the UK. Simon started recruiting in 2004 and has since recruited across Europe and Asia, for some of the biggest companies in the world. Returning to Yorkshire in 2015, he realised that, whilst there are a lot of recruitment companies out there, very few were prioritising the needs of the clients or the job seeker above their own. When Simon’s wife tried to return to work after a 4-year break, they realised that there was a lack of support in the Yorkshire region for parents wanting to return to work – for those that didn’t know what their next career steps should be, how they should be writing their CV, or how to prepare for and handle a job interview. Hence GPS Return was born! In our discussion, Simon helps to debunk some of the common misconceptions around flexible working, and offers a clearer view of how different organisations can make flexibility work for them and their people. He also shares some of the amazing work they’ve done at GPS Return, to become a more inclusive and accessible recruitment firm. This episode is a must listen for anyone in the recruitment or D&I arena, and likewise for anyone looking for an amazing recruitment company to support them in finding the perfect fit for their next position. 4: Six Months Off With The Kids, Now What?

In this weeks episode, I discuss the challenges that are being faced by working parents after spending almost a whopping 6 months at home with their children. Whether they've been furloughed, or working from home, the situation was extremely challenging. Many will soon be returning, either to work altogether, or to the office, and may need some support as they navigate that transition. I provide some suggestions for employers and leaders to help make that adjustment period as smooth and supportive as possible. 3: Six Signs It's Time To Quit Your Job

In today's episode I try to help you establish whether it's time to move on to a new job, or whether it's worth sticking it out in your current role. Staying in the wrong job doesn't benefit anyone. Least of all the employee and the employer. But it's something we shy away from talking about, let alone facing the problem head on. This week's Hero of the Week award goes to a quick thinking police officer who rescued a disabled man when his wheelchair became stuck on a train track just moments before the train arrived.

You'll hear about some of the negative experiences that lead me to become passionate about the work I do now to help other organisations. I don't just delve into examples from my own experiences, I also offer suggestions on how you can overcome these challenges if you're facing them in your workplace. Whether you're a manager, work in HR, or you're an employee working in a toxic environment, this is certainly an episode you won't want to miss.  This week's Hero of the Week award goes to two fast acting Northamptonshire Police Officers, who unexpectedly ended up delivering a baby following a routine traffic stop.
