#96: You Are Who You Surround Yourself With: Why It Matters For Your Dreams

Send Carlene a text or voicemail Have you ever left a conversation and felt like you just needed to go decompress? And then another time, you talk to someone for twenty minutes and walk away lit up, ready to take on your whole day? Same amount of time. Completely different experience. This week I'm digging into something I've started calling Relationship ROI — the return you actually get on the people you spend your time and energy on. Turns out there's real research behind why some people leave you fuller and others leave you running on empty. And if you want more of that good energy in your life, I'm going to give you three simple ways to build it in. And when you do, you'll see how that energy turns into you making real strides on the dreams you've only imagined so far. Because you've heard it before, you are who you surround yourself with. 3 Key Takeaways: The people you spend your energy on are shaping more than just your week. They're shaping what you believe is possible for you. Every relationship in your life has value, even the ones that aren't your biggest cheerleaders — you just get to decide where you put your energy. It's never too late to find your people, those who get you and what you're building. #95: The Brain Science Behind Keeping Promises to Yourself

Send Carlene a text or voicemail If you grew up hearing "you'll figure it out," "life isn't fair," or "just do your best," this episode is for you, my friend. Those words made us strong — but a lot of us also learned to say "I'm fine" when we weren't, and just keep going anyway.  Today I'm sharing three lessons that could genuinely change how you live the next year of your life, not just how you think about it.  And yes, there's actual brain science on why small kept promises to yourself matter more than any big overhaul ever will.  By the end, you're picking one specific hour you're taking back this week. Not someday — this week. 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS: 1️⃣ You'll feel the relief of naming what "I'm fine" has actually been costing you. 2️⃣ You'll realize being busy and building the life you want are not the same thing. 3️⃣ You'll walk away knowing exactly which hour is yours to take back. #92: The Only Two Things You Need To Make Progress On Your Dreams

Send Carlene a text or voicemail We're more than halfway through the year, and if I'm honest, I'm not as far along on my dreams as I thought I'd be by now. Maybe you're right there with me. So today, we're going back to the basics I talked about almost two years ago. What consistency really is. How getting impatient with results sets you back, and what to do instead. How mindset isn't a feeling, it's a decision. Why waiting to feel like it isn't a strategy. The true value of fifteen minutes every day. And how to finally trust yourself to follow through. 3 Key Takeaways From This Episode: 1️⃣ You'll realize there's never a perfect time to start. 2️⃣ You'll know you can show up imperfectly and still make progress. 3️⃣ You'll recognize the moment where most people quit, right before it would've paid off SUBSCRIBE TO MY NEWSLETTER: The Tuesday Letter with Carlene right here DOWNLOAD THE FREE START DREAMING AGAIN GUIDE Check out all my coaching and course offerings - Coachcarlene.com MORE FROM ME Follow me on Instagram:  @coach_carlene SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW If you loved this episode, please take a moment to subscribe and leave a review on Apple Podcasts! #90: When Your Dream Stops Being Fun and Feels Like Too Much Effort

Send Carlene a text or voicemail Have you been more focused on the effort of your dream lately than the fun of it? Are you constantly replaying that soundtrack of, "This is hard, like, so much harder than I thought," or, "This is taking so much longer than I thought it would"? If you find yourself wondering how you ever thought your dream was going to be fun, you are in the right place today. Because today we're talking about how effort and fun, they actually go hand in hand when you're doing the reps to bring your dream to life. We tend to assume that if something is worth doing, it should feel light — and the second it doesn't, we panic. But there's real research on this, and it says the opposite of what we assume. It's called the effort paradox, and it explains why the hardest part of your dream might be exactly what makes the reward feel real. I'm also bringing in the IKEA effect — a study on why we love the things we build with our own hands, and the one condition that has to be true for that love to actually stick. Plus a simple seven-minute journaling exercise to help you find the fun again when it's gone quiet on you. 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE 1️⃣"This is hard, and this is fun." Two things, both true, at the same time.  2️⃣ The fun has to be findable. That's the test.  3️⃣ The more effort you put in, the more it's going to mean to you when it's done. #89: How to Know If Complacency Is Slowly Killing Your Dreams: 5 Questions to Ask Now

Send Carlene a text or voicemail You know that great year you had with your spouse? The one where things finally felt easy? Somewhere in there, date night disappeared, conversations turned into scheduling logistics, and that loving feeling faded. You got comfortable. Things were fine, even good. And somewhere along the way you stopped doing the things that created it. That's complacency. And it happens to all of us, in our relationships, money, jobs, and dreams. Today, we're talking about the difference between complacency and vigilance. We'll do the math on what it's costing you to be complacent and how to stay vigilant and enjoy the good place you're in at the same time. You'll answer five questions to help you see where in your life complacency has quietly snuck in and catch it before you get surprised if and when everything goes sideways. 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE  1️⃣ The things that got you to a good place — the check-ins, the effort, the attention — are the same things you have to keep doing once you're there.  2️⃣ Vigilance isn't about being fearful. It's about being watchful so you keep the momentum going.  3️⃣ A good year is a data point, not a finish line. #88: When You've Invested So Much In A Dream That No Longer Lights You Up: 5 Questions To Ask

Send Carlene a text or voicemail Have you ever stayed in a dream, a job, a project, or even a relationship just because of how much you've already invested? In today's episode, we're talking about the sunk cost fallacy — the sneaky trap that convinces you that walking away means everything you already gave was wasted. It wasn't. And staying just to prove it wasn't wasted might be costing you more than you realize. I'll walk you through five questions to help you know whether you're moving forward because you believe in it, or staying stuck because of what it cost you to get here. 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: 1️⃣ The real cost of staying isn't what you spent — it's what it's taking from you right now. 2️⃣ Quitting something doesn't erase what it taught you. 3️⃣ You're allowed to grieve something and still know it's time to let it go. #87: What Rory Vaden Taught Me About Why My Dream Keeps Waiting

Send Carlene a text or voicemail Have you ever ended a week knowing your dream didn't move — and you're not even sure why? You weren't scrolling all day. You weren't being careless. You were handling real things for real people. And somehow the thing that matters most to you got buried under all of it. That's what Rory Vaden calls priority dilution, and it's the one type of procrastination most of us never see coming. In this episode, I'm breaking down all three types of procrastination from his book Take the Stairs, then going deep on the one that's most likely getting in your way right now. I'll also share the inbox metaphor that shifted how I think about my own attention, and four steps I'm using to protect my dreams without guilt. 3 Key Takeaways From This Episode: 1️⃣ The realization that every interruption felt reasonable in the moment, and that’s exactly what makes this so hard to see. 2️⃣ You get to choose your focus and deliberately put your dream at the top. 3️⃣ Permission to protect your dream time without having to earn it, announce it, or justify it to anyone. #86: The Difference Between Quitting and Completing a Dream

Send Carlene a text or voicemail I sat down to record this week thinking, honestly, that I had nothing left to say.   And instead of pretending otherwise, I decided to talk about that. About what it feels like when a dream goes quiet, and how you tell the difference between a hard week and a finished chapter.   We've all picked up the idea that if something is truly your dream, it should feel exciting. It should be easy to want. When it doesn't, we read that as proof we chose wrong.   The question is, are you holding onto something you still want or just holding on out of habit?  We're not landing on a clean answer here. That's not how this works.  But we are going to talk about what that question actually means, and why the fact that you're still asking it might be the most honest thing you've got right now.  3 Key Take Aways From This Episode 1️⃣ You can be fully inside your dream and still have days where you'd rather be anywhere else. That's just what it feels like to be in something real.  2️⃣ There's a difference between quitting and completing, and knowing which one you're actually looking at changes what you do next.  3️⃣ When someone else's dream looks steady and certain from the outside it is often just them showing up anyway, on the bad days too. #85: Why "I Don't Know What I Want" Is a Nervous System Problem, and how to fix it.

Send Carlene a text or voicemail I don't even know what I want anymore." If you've said that to yourself lately, it's likely your nervous system is maxed-out.  In this episode, I'm getting into what happens when your body has spent years managing everyone, holding the family together, running the mental and emotional load nobody sees. Because when that happens there's no room left for your dreams to surface.  I'll walk you through what it actually looks like to reset and regulate your nervous system so your dreams can find you again, starting with five quiet minutes.  3 Key Takeaways: A maxed-out nervous system can't hear what you want. Dreams live in the margins, in the quiet, in the moments your body finally settles. Regulating your nervous system becomes how you take care of yourself in mid-life. #83: Your Nervous System First: The Summer Reset That Actually Works

Send Carlene a text or voicemail American culture has taught us that being busy, slammed, having so much going on makes us important.  Like a packed calendar is proof that we matter. But what if everything we've been measuring our worth by is working against us? Against our health, our clarity, our joy, and yes, even our productivity? If you've been running on fumes and calling it productive, this episode is going to give you both the science and the permission to finally slow down.  Not because the to-do list doesn't matter. But because taking care of your nervous system first is exactly how the to-do list gets done with less stress, less friction, and more clarity. I say that as someone who calls herself a productivity strategist. I mean every word of it. In this episode, I'm sharing what the research says about why we've become addicted to busy, what chronic stress is actually doing inside your body, and a simple summer reset menu,  backed by science, that you can start today, right where you are. 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE 1️⃣You don't have to choose between being productive and taking care of yourself. Caring for your nervous system first is what makes the to-do list actually get done. 2️⃣ Doing nothing with someone you love is not wasted time. It's co-regulation. Your nervous systems are literally calming each other down. 3️⃣ The guilt you feel when you slow down? That's withdrawal. Push through it — because what's on the other side is clarity you forgot was possible. #82: Are You a Perfectionist or Just Hiding? 5 Questions to Find Out

Send Carlene a text or voicemail You've said it before. Maybe you're saying it right now. "I'm a perfectionist." But what if that's not the whole truth? In this episode, I'm coming back to perfectionism — because just when we think we've put that monster to sleep, it sneaks back in. It disguises itself as excellence and hard work and caring oh so much. And today I'm giving you some tough love, because the only way through it is to name it for what it really is. I'll walk you through five honest questions to help you figure out whether you're in perfectionist mode — or hiding mode. Because they look the same from the outside, but they have very different solutions. Then I'll give you three shifts to build momentum and keep it going, even when perfectionism tries to nudge its way back in. 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE If nothing has materially improved in the last week, you're not refining — you're stalling. Nothing can be perfected until it's completed. You cannot improve what you refuse to release. Progress is not a mood. It's a system. Map it, make time for it, ship it at 80%. #81: Finding yourself again in midlife: it's not about finding your purpose

Send Carlene a text or voicemail Have you ever stood in the middle of the widest open season of your life — and somehow felt more lost than free? That's where so many of us are in midlife. The kids are grown. The schedule has space. And instead of feeling excited, we're staring at a 12-page menu of possibilities with no idea what to order. In this episode, I'm sharing the one question that cuts through all of it — and it's not "what's my purpose." It's simpler than that. And honestly? It works a whole lot better. I'll walk you through five questions I use with my own clients to uncover your deepest values — because once you know what you value, your dream filter exists. You stop chasing everyone else's version of a good life and start building your own. 3 Key Takeaways from this episode: 1️⃣ You've grown over the past 20 years and that means your values have changed. 2️⃣ Midlife is the time where you can finally sit in the quiet and get to know yourself again. 3️⃣ The overwhelm you feel is a sign that you're ready to start thinking about what you want again DOWNLOAD THE FREE START DREAMING AGAIN GUIDE Check out all my coaching and course offerings - Coachcarlene.com MORE FROM ME Follow me on Instagram:  @coach_carlene SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW If you loved this episode, please take a moment to subscribe and leave a review on Apple Podcasts! #78: Why You Feel Lonely Even When You're Constantly "Talking" to People — And the One Thing That Fixes

Send Carlene a text or voicemail You're texting. You're in the group chat. You're sending the memes and the voice notes and the "thinking of you" messages. So why do you still feel so lonely? That's exactly what listener Theresa asked — and honestly, it stopped me cold. Because she's not wrong. We have more ways to reach people than ever before, and yet so many of us feel more disconnected than we ever have. In this episode, we're talking about the difference between contact and connection — why they are not the same thing, what real presence actually does for your relationships, and the one simple shift that changes everything. Because you're not doing it wrong. You're just missing something nobody told you about. 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE 1️⃣ Contact keeps you in touch. Connection is what fills you back up — and they require very different things. 2️⃣ The loneliness you feel isn't about how often you reach out — it's about how you're reaching out. 3️⃣ You don't need permission to call someone. #75: "Why Would She Want to Hear from Me?" Why Women in Midlife Stop Reaching Out — And How to Start Aga

Send Carlene a text or voicemail Somewhere between the kids leaving, the career shifting, and the pandemic teaching us that staying home was actually fine — a lot of us stopped reaching out. One un-sent text at a time. Tomorrow we tell ourselves. Tomorrow, I'll reach out. Just like our dreams, we file it away under "someday" — and someday is not a day on the calendar. In this episode, I'm talking about why connection gets so hard in midlife specifically — and why the reason isn't what most of us think it is. It's not that we're too busy. It's not that we're introverted. It's a much quieter voice that says: why would she want to hear from me? I'm sharing stories from my own life about the people I almost kept at arm's length, the excuses I made that sound logical and were completely wrong, and what finally changed. And I'm sharing the science behind why one small act of reaching out this week could start rewiring everything. 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE The social scaffolding that used to hold our friendships together has quietly disappeared — and nobody warns you it's happening Assuming everyone else already has their people is the fastest way to guarantee your own isolation Reaching out in small, low-stakes moments is how you rewire the pattern — one rep at a time It's time to stop taking ourselves out of the friendship equation before we ever give others a chance. #74: Why You Feel "Meh": The 4-Step Framework to Finally Fix It

Send Carlene a text Have you ever made a promise to yourself that you'd do something important… and then avoided it? The truth is, every time we say something matters and don't act on it, we erode our confidence. Do it long enough and you stop trusting yourself. What if the reason you can't seem to follow through has nothing to do with discipline, motivation, or willpower — and everything to do with your identity? In this episode, I'm sharing a 4-step identity alignment framework — originally developed around money mindset and adapted here for women in midlife — that explains why so many of us feel stuck, scattered, and disconnected from our dreams.  Whether you're rediscovering who you are after years of pouring into everyone else, navigating a major life transition, or simply tired of saying "someday" — this framework is the missing piece. ✨ KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: That "meh" disconnected feeling isn't a mood — it's a sign there's a gap between how you live each day and your values Your confidence isn't gone, it's overdrawn — and you can start making deposits today Change your language from "I want" to "I will" and you move from wishing to choosing who you are becoming When you start behaving like the person you're becoming, you will start to see a more confident you in the mirror Consistency doesn't mean perfect — it means showing up the day after you didn't 🎧 Grab your coffee, find a quiet corner, and let's get into it. #73: How to Lead Yourself Through Midlife — and Why the People You Love Need You To

Send Carlene a text We don't talk about this enough: the years after raising kids, after caregiving, after decades of showing up for everyone else — those years are not the winding down. They are not the epilogue. They are a new chapter opening, and it might just be the most powerful one of your life. You are not who you were in your thirties. You are wiser. You have less patience for what doesn't matter and more clarity about what does. You've lived through enough to know that time is not infinite — and that is not a sad thing. That is a clarifying thing. So what are you going to do with that clarity? That's what this episode is about. I walk you through what it really means to lead yourself in this season: claiming your dreams, advocating for your health, and showing up as the woman you've been becoming all along. You’ll learn three simple daily practices to start leading your own life on purpose, starting today, because someday is now. 💡 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:  1️⃣ What self-leadership actually looks like when your body, your dreams, and your identity are all shifting at once 2️⃣ The clarity you've earned through everything you've lived? That's your superpower. 3️⃣ When you choose yourself in this season, the people watching you learn what's possible — that's a legacy DOWNLOAD THE FREE START DREAMING AGAIN GUIDE Check out all my coaching and course offerings - Coachcarlene.com MORE FROM ME Follow me on Instagram:  @coach_carlene SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW If you loved this episode, please take a moment to subscribe and leave a review on Apple Podcasts! #72: Feeling Lost? How to Recalibrate What You’ve Outgrown

Send Carlene a text Lately, I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to keep living a life that no longer fits… just because it once did. I’m talking about that moment when you realize you don’t want what you used to want—and how unsettling that can feel. But also? How powerful it can be. In this episode, I’m sharing what it looks like to outgrow parts of your life—and how to recalibrate without burning everything down, including: The subtle ways we stay stuck in old patterns—and how to let go of outdated expectations How to become an observer of your own life and recognize where you’re still living like your past self How to uncover the hidden space and energy you didn’t realize you had Sometimes, the problem isn’t that you’re lost… It’s that you’ve changed—you’re evolving, and your life hasn’t caught up yet. And this next version of your life? You get to shape it—through small, intentional steps toward a life that actually reflects who you are now. 3 Key Takeaways from this episode: ✨ Feeling “off” is often a signal that something is ready to shift ✨ When you become an observer of your life, you uncover powerful data showing you where to recalibrate ✨ The life you built isn’t wrong… there just might be pieces that don’t fit anymore DOWNLOAD THE FREE START DREAMING AGAIN GUIDE Check out all my coaching and course offerings - Coachcarlene.com MORE FROM ME Follow me on Instagram:  @coach_carlene SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW If you loved this episode, please take a moment to subscribe and leave a review on Apple Podcasts! #70: The Empty Nest Shift That Makes You Ask: Who Am I Now?

Send Carlene a text The empty nest isn’t just about your kids leaving home. It’s about who you are when the house gets quiet. In this episode, I’m sharing what it really feels like to move from being everything to your kids to parenting adult children — and why this season can leave you asking, Who am I now? We’re talking about the grief no one prepares you for, the pride that lives right alongside it, and the push-and-pull of loving your grown kids without holding them too tightly. If you’ve organized your life around motherhood and now find yourself in a quieter house wondering what’s next — not just for them, but for you — this conversation is for you. Because the empty nest isn’t the end of your purpose. It’s the beginning of a new chapter. 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE Both grief and excitement can live in the same heart — and neither cancels the other out. It’s safe to build a life that includes your grown kids and your own dreams. The empty nest isn’t a loss of identity — it’s the door cracking open to discover what’s next for you. This season may feel tender. But it’s also preparing you for something new.
