[Adam] Inlight of everything that’s happening, we’re not going to be doing a full episode this week, but we did want to say a few things: We want to extend our condolences to the family of George Floyd, and all victims of police brutality and their families. We stand in solidarity with the black community, and stand against the unjust, extrajudicial killings of American citizens by a heavily militarized police force.   [Markos] We really want to discuss this in detail and we do have a few guests we want to bring on who can give us first hand accounts and add their voices to this conversation.   [Adam] But we don’t want to just “add to the noise” what the two of us have to say isn’t anything new, bold or unique right now, so we’re stepping aside. We’re also going to take a quick minute to see how some of this strange folklore impacts our development culturally and scientifically.   WHY DO WE CARE? -So folklore. We kinda wanted to do something a little less serious.You know, there’s been a whole lot of depressing stuff going around in the news lately, and even without that, we’ve more recently been tackling some hard hitting stuff here on The First Next Step. But also, folklore is so often written off as old wives tales or stuff you can just forget about. And often times it really is just that. But it’s also something that’s evolving and always being added to. And more so, they’re chronicles of localities. They’re interesting reflections of societies, local and national and let us remain in touch with our roots. They can also even help with some scientific advancements, or in some cases can help people with their day to day life, even if they don’t understand why. It’s about a drink you can buy in an obscure bar in the Yukon.  -It all started in the 1920’s with two brothers trapped in a blizzard. One of them falls through some ice and his foot freezes. According to the story, frozen solid. -Now in 1920’s Yukon, medical treatment wasn’t… ehh… readily available.  -So to prevent gangrene and well, death, the only solution was for one brother to cut the other brother’s toe off. WIth an axe. -And what better way to celebrate your first axe amputation? By putting the toe in a jar of alcohol. -So years go by -- about 50 of them. And in 1973, a gentleman named Captain Dick Stevenson finds the jar with the toe in a cabin. -So he decides to create a club. The club has a requirement -- you have to drink what’s called the sourtoe cocktail.  -Now they have a little saying for this. Ready for it? -“You can drink it fast. You can drink it slow. But your lips must touch that gnarly toe.” -That’s right, the cocktail is a shot of whiskey with a severed, preserved human toe in it. That’s it. Someone managed to monetize an amputated toe in a jar. And I say good for them.   -Also while we’re talking about this, there’s a few little extra tidbits that make this story extra amusing. -First they’ve gone through eight toes, because people keep accidentally swallowing them or they “go missing.”  -If you do drink the whole toe by accident, they have a fine of $500. -In 2015, a man drank the toe intentionally as he took the shot, gulped down the toe and immediately put $500 on the table. Supposedly this led to a vigilante search for him that included the hells angels. I’d leave town too, to be honest. -The man who swallowed the toe, one Joshua Clark, was banned from the bar that serves the sourtoe cocktail. But, there’s a bit of a light here. Mr. Clark feels guilty and has offered to donate his toe to make up for it. Now of course, these were all orphan kids in the facility as well. So it’s an orphanage and an asylum. There a doctor began to conduct genetic experiments on the patients, turning them into monsters with large heads. -Of course, experimenting with the genes of insane orphans isn’t enough, because the doctor is the bad guy. He and his staff also beat and torture the kids they experiment on because of course they do. -And what happens next? They revolt of course. With their hideously mutated forms, enlarged cranium, bulging, dead eyes, hunched over and horribly misshapen from abuse, they managed to descend on the doctor and his cohorts violently, killing them all and of course, eating them.
