  After an early summer break ‘The Holborn Podcast’ returns and we head straight to The Bar for a refreshing G&T. In this episode we got on the blower to Cognac, where there presides an Australian (Miko) and an Englishman (Ian) who make, of all things, gin. For this live recording we will look at the world of Gin, it’s history, the best way to enjoy Mother’s Ruin and a look at the current market – all while tasting some of our panelists favourite gins out there at the moment. We welcome world’s best bartender Ryan Chetiyawardana of Mr Lyan, gin expert extraordinaire Oliver Ward of Gin Foundry, Alex Wolpert of Holborn favourite the East London Liquor Company and Hannah Sharman-Cox of Drink Up London, the woman behind London Cocktail Week.  

David Hieatt of Hiut Denim fame wrote in his book Do Purpose; “The best brands in the world make us feel something. They tell us their dreams and what they want to change. They bare their soul. And it touches us. At some point, we stop being customers and become fans. These companies have a reason to exist. They know why they get out of bed in the morning. They have something that most brands don’t have: A Purpose. And, it is an incredibly powerful thing.” A new wave of brands are doing things the right way and making us feel something and connect with them, they have the Purpose Mr Hieatt talks of. We sit down with a handful of inspring brands to ask them what their purpose is, what they want to change, how their customers become fans, and how they build their culture. This week our Editor-in-Chief Morgan & Tavern Correspondent Jacob head to a East London boozer to reveal our new Kickstarter project – all about East London Pubs! After multiple pints the conversation drifts to the best and worst of the licensed trade, the joys of terrible service and a love for Victorian architecture.

For our fourth episode we joined up with the chaps from Thomas Clipper to co-produce an episode for both of our podcasts. Thomas Clipper produce a range of beautiful shaving goods, that are small batch and limited edition, and are for men who value modern British design, quality craftsmanship and taking the time to do things properly.   This week we move into The Wardrobe and head down Savile Row to meet James Sleater, co-founder of innovative tailor Cad & The Dandy. Founded in 2008 they operate with the conviction that high end bespoke tailoring should be accessible to all. We find out from James how they have sought to modernise the way Savile Row Tailoring is done while maintaining a centuries old commitment to the world’s finest tailoring. For our second episode we move from The Bar to The Library to sit down with our very own Library Editor Ben Aitken about his travel book Dear Bill Bryson: Footnotes from A Small Island. Ben describes the book as : ‘A less funny sequel to the ’95 travel classic ‘Notes from a Small Island’, wherein I retrace Bill Bryson’s giant American footsteps.’ We talk to Ben about the man himself, travel writing, find your own voice and a not so romantic encounter with a sweaty girl’s back in a nightclub in Salisbury. For our first Drinks Cabinet podcast we are sat in the maturation room at The East London Liquor Company in Bow we are joined by the distillery head honcho Alex Wolpert; drinks journalist and photographer Matt Hickman of Matt the List and Florence Cherruault from Pickle House. We explore the world of rum and sample a few choice tipples as we talk about the Caribbean and Hollywood Sharks.
