Ep 62 - Breaking up the party

Is a host responsible for the party going well? In this week’s podcast Melis and Cyndi explore what it means to host an online community, or a party. They also take a look at whether humans are hard wired for co operation, what it might like to be a girl at an exclusive boarding school and Melis begins to talk about a book on metamodernism, which is something about politics that aims to elevate human consciousness…maybe… Oh and we have a special offer for podcast listeners to sign up to the Unlocking Beliefs Course on thishuman.com at a discount. Ep 60 - Emotional permeability and power

This week Melis and Cyndi reflect on the international movement in response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and what white people can do, and how to sit in discomfort and still take action. They also take on the big question of Vision as an inspiring force ( or not) and there's some book talk too. There is also a bit about emotional permeability and indigenous knowledge. And something about Jacinda Ardern. Melis talked about the book Power and Force. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19795.Power_vs_Force Rachel Cargle revolution Address https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leBPMyQ60HM, The Great Unlearn https://www.patreon.com/posts/revolution-now-37706213 Charlotte Wood The Natural Way of Things https://www.charlottewood.com.au/the-natural-way-of-things.html Julia Baird Phosphorescence https://www.readings.com.au/review/phosphorescence-by-julia-baird

Ep 59 — Discomfort with envisioning something new

This week Melis and Cyndi reflect on the international movement in response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and what white people can do, and how to sit in discomfort and still take action. They also take on the big question of Vision as an inspiring force (or not) and there's some book talk too. (Funny epilogue at the end - I'd given them a heads-up on the nature of the mystery question because the questions are sometimes curly ones. This led to a hilarious intro which I have added to the end of the podcast - enjoy! Ep 58 - On Human Nature

This week Melis excitedly discusses gene splicing and the moral and ethical dilemmas that this field of science presents. Cyndi shares her perspective on whether we are actually unique individuals or whether we are more alike than we think and then there is the usual smorgasbord of links to interesting reads and watches (what you do with your eyes not what you put on your wrist), all below. Ep 57 - A pretty philosophical episode

In this episode Melis and Cyndi ponder the perception and impact of humans being the apex species, apart from nature. They consider some deep questions about the distinctions between being and having and try and shed some light on why they are so obsessed with being! It's pretty interesting. Along the way they talk about a lot of books Melis has read and Cyndi attempted and they laugh, at each other, a bit. Ep 55 - Inviting new perspectives

Melis and Cyndi are back with their weekly meandering discussion. This week Jill Soloway takes centre stage with a talk she gave at SXSW in 2017 about her perspective of the film industry and some fascinating implications on how we show up in the world and people. They then share some insights from their current work about how the pandemic has unlocked the courage to try new things, and technology can hinder rather than help in some instances. They finish off with a mystery question of massive proportions. Ep 54 - Role of fiction in building empathy

Melis Senova and Cyndi Dawes are back to share their pondering about whether fiction is an excellent gateway to building your empathy muscles. Cyndi’s favourite topic, Melis, is not sure. There is some exploration about the potential impact of lockdown on kids and whether the adventurer spirit will be alive and well post doing everything electronically, while at home. And of course, there is the note swapping about what they are reading, watching and listening to, trying hard not to make it all about Brene Brown. Melis ‘read' Untamed, mentioned last week, so she talks about that, Cyndi talks about interesting things she’s heard on the radio. Ep 53 - Being human in a time of lockdown - Melis and Cyndi

Melis Senova and Cyndi Dawes share their reflections on how humans are working and living and thinking and feeling in a time of COVID 19 lockdown. In particular, they talk about energy and creativity when spending time connecting via a screen instead of real life. And there’s some wondering about what a home actually is now. They also talk about what they’ve been reading and ruminate on what leadership is. Ep 51 – Co-creation, education and lessons in entrepreneurship: a talk with Dr Grainne Oates.

"What if I could use what currently distracts students to engage them?” Founder, entrepreneur and senior lecturer Dr Grainne Oates joins us to discuss insights on the journey of entrepreneurship and reflections on co-designing with users for her latest app, Quitch. Quitch is a mobile app designed to improve the student learning experience and outcomes. The app uses game elements and game design techniques which make learning really fun, and it’s mobile and accessible which means students can access course materials at a time of their choosing on their own device. This stemmed from Grainne seeing students time and time again not achieving the results she knows they can in her work as a lecturer. In the second part of this show we have a brand new mystery question, and we also chat about the importance of instinct, determination, what it means to have nerves of steel. Grainne shares insights around what she's been reading, watching and doing, which we're sure you'll enjoy too! Happy listening.

Ep 47 — Innovative approaches to ending youth homelessness — The Huddle Show

Did you know that over 44,000 young people are homeless on any given night in Australia? Homelessness massively impacts individuals themselves and society more broadly (including you and me. Lighthouse Foundation offers a really innovative and rather radical approach to supporting young people to help end youth homelessness. Special guests Simon Benjamin from Lighthouse Foundation and Nick Pertrucco from HCMC Group to talk about this, along with what it means to create services that aren’t one size fits all, why slowing things down and being responsive not reactive is so important and how human-centricity unlocks employees, not just folks who use the service. Plus lots more. There are some really valuable lessons you and I — as human-centric problem solvers — can glean from these two. Simon Benjamin is the CEO of Lighthouse Foundation. He has worked in the out-of-home residential care, mental health and disability sectors for over 13 years. He has a great deal of experience working with children, young people and their families from backgrounds of complex trauma and has worked in a number of therapeutic settings, including the Mulberry Bush School in the United Kingdom, a specialist therapeutic community and a recognised international leader in the field. Nick Petrucco leads a management consulting firm HCMC where Nic coaches leaders and their teams to constructively work together to lead meaningful change in modern complex organisations. HCMC is dedicated to affecting positive change in the lives of others, the communities we live in and in the world we share and also has a number of social enterprise projects. Nick volunteers with Lighthouse Foundation.

In the next 10 years, half of all companies listed on the S&P 500 will have fallen off the index. They’ll have either been decimated in size or replaced entirely. In this episode, I’m joined by Huddle’s new General Manager John Burgin to explore the major forces impacting business today and what companies need to do to ensure their longevity. Lending his expertise and geekery, we discuss the rise of Asia, the value of understanding human behaviour, and why inclusive experimentation in technology is so important.

Ep 45 — How to communicate design with Marc Fonteijn — The Huddle Show

These days, Service Design and Human Centred Design is a hot topic. People have varying ideas of what these Design disciplines are and the value they bring. There’s enthusiasm and there’s skepticism, there’s curiosity and there’s fatigue. Given these contexts, how do you talk about Service Design and HCD? What are the big assumptions people make about design? What mistakes do we make when we talk about design? How can we communicate the value of design in a way that people feel ‘aha! i get it!’? I’m joined by Marc Fonteign and Huddler Jon Osborne to get insights and tips on communicating the value of design. Marc is a Founding partner 31Volts, the first SD agency in the Netherlands, he’s the Host of the Service Design Show (which aims to inspire and connect the global Service Design community by providing material for a richer and deeper discussion). He’s also our first international guest which is quite exciting! Jon Osborne is a senior strategic designer and facilitator at Huddle. Drawing on a background in the built environment, he helps leadership teams pioneer resilient innovation initiatives based on solid research and fresh thinking. Jon also previously built and led a human centred design practice at Arup.

Ep 42 — Hidden Commitments of Leadership: a sneak peak — The Huddle Show

Today’s episode is about leadership and the hidden commitments it takes to be human-centred in the way you lead. Because of course, there are things we might not realise are required of us when we start to step into, for example, really openly listening to co-workers, exploring collaborative working, inviting empathy into communications. Melis Senova, Huddle’s founder and author of This Human, is talking about this topic at the upcoming NewCo festival in Melbourne — she's discussing What it takes to make impact: the six hidden commitments. Today in the studio, we’re deep diving into three of these commitments, hearing examples of how they’ve played out in Melis’ own leadership and business and hear practical ways to illuminate and consciously work with these commitments in your own leadership and organisations.
