Face Dances - The Who

The Who’s ninth studio album Face Dances was released in mid-March 1981.  The single “You Better You Bet” had been dancing up the charts, finding a comfortable spot at No. 4 in the US and No. 2 in the UK.  At the time the Who were dabbling with this fresh form of music expression called the music video, and fans were eager to hear how the band would sound after the loss of their dynamic drummer Keith Moon.    Written & Produced: Rick Coste Music Credits: Intro - Feelin Good by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3744-feelin-good License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Outro - Sax, Rock, and Roll by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4324-sax-rock-and-roll License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/   Visit https://JoyofVinyl.com  for more vinyl memories

Bad Company

Bad Company's debut album hit the stores hit the top of the charts in the US and reached No.3 in the UK.  It didn’t stop there.  Many of the songs on the album became FM radio staples and the record itself has been certified platinum five times, eventually becoming the 46th best-selling album of the 1970s. For Those About to Rock - ACDC

I read somewhere that For Those About to Rock was ACDC’s victory lap after the highly successful album Back in Black.  “Highly successful” is an understatement.  Back in Black was a tour de force.  It signified a band’s ability to rise above tragedy and to shift gears on a ride that should have, for all intents and purposes, ended on the highway to hell. Review: The Onzow ZeroDust Stylus Cleaner

There are some strange things on the market these days.  When it comes to caring for your vinyl collection, or even playing it, there’s no shortage of weird turntables, cleaning devices, or opinions.  We talk a lot about cleaning your records, but it’s not only your vinyl that needs to be cared for and handled properly, there is also your stylus.   Written & Produced: Rick Coste Music Credits: Intro - Feelin Good by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3744-feelin-good License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Outro - Sax, Rock, and Roll by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4324-sax-rock-and-roll License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/   Visit https://JoyofVinyl.com  for more vinyl memories

Perfect Strangers - Deep Purple

There are many iconic song intros that are immediately recognizable.  Then there are those that will give you goosebumps.  With the latter I can’t think of a better example than “Knocking at Your Back Door” from the album Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple.  The song kicks everything off and it also cements Deep Purple’s 1984 comeback, reuniting a band whose classic lineup had split into a few separate bands a decade earlier. I’m always interested in ways to better care for my vinyl collection.  If something new comes along that catches my eye I do a little research and, if my budget can handle it, I try it out.  If you want to see a demonstration and my personal review of the Spin-Clean, you can go to my YouTube channel ’The Joy of Vinyl’. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi79PFdkSgcIA_5QGkEMarA Written & Produced: Rick Coste Music Credits: Intro - Feelin Good by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3744-feelin-good License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Outro - Sax, Rock, and Roll by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4324-sax-rock-and-roll License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/   Visit https://JoyofVinyl.com  for more reviews & vinyl memories

Boston

On August 25, 1975, the band Boston released their first self-titled album.  It was here that the world was first introduced to the vocals Brad Delp.  His voice, accompanied by the guitar sound of master-mind Tom Scholz, propelled the album into the stratosphere.  It was one of the most successful debut albums of all time and has sold somewhere between 17-20 million copies.  Written & Produced: Rick Coste Music Credits: Intro - Feelin Good by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3744-feelin-good License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Outro - Sax, Rock, and Roll by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4324-sax-rock-and-roll License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/   Visit https://JoyofVinyl.com  for more vinyl memories

A Short History of Vinyl Records

Have you ever wondered about the history behind that vinyl record spinning on your turntable? Well, today you are in for a treat. That’s what we’re here to look at - the history of vinyl records and the so-called “vinyl revival” we are looking at today.   Written & Produced: Rick Coste Music Credits: Intro - Feelin Good by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3744-feelin-good License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Outro - Sax, Rock, and Roll by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4324-sax-rock-and-roll License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/   Visit https://JoyofVinyl.com  for more vinyl memories

The Pretenders

I had a crush on Chrissie Hynde in the early 80s.  She could do no wrong.  And she was the real deal.  She was tough, and it showed.  If there’s any doubt, just listen to “Precious”, the opening track of the Pretender’s debut album.  It’s punk-driven rock with sharp concrete-jungle lyrics that conjure images of seedy bars and dark underground tattoo parlors. What I Do Before Every Listen

Let’s talk about your records.  I know I spend a lot of time talking about the music, but failing to care for your collection and the music will suffer.  We definitely don’t want that to happen!  Over time, those grooves will collect dust and other little things that will ruin both your listening pleasure, and perhaps even your stylus. Blizzard of Ozz - Ozzy Osbourne

On the turntable today is Ozzy Osbourne’s Blizzard of Ozz.  At the time of the album’s first release on September 20th, 1980, Ozzy wasn’t an artist going through the motions.  For the previous decade he had fronted Black Sabbath and while the band’s music had focused on dark imagery and demons, Ozzy battled demons of his own.  Those demons led to his break with Sabbath.  Blizzard of Ozz was Ozzy’s return.  This album wasn’t just a man redefining himself - it was a man who had dragged his demons along for the ride. Some Enchanted Evening - Blue Oyster Cult

I discovered one of my favorite bands purely by accident.  I was sitting in study hall, which was basically free time to do whatever you wanted, and I had nothing to do.  The kid in the desk next to me drew a symbol on his notebook. It looked like a cross, but the bottom half of the cross was curved, like an upside down question mark. Beneath the symbol, he wrote the words... Blue Oyster Cult. Don't Say No - Billy Squier

On the turntable today is Billy Squier’s Don’t Say No.  A true rock classic if there ever was one.  The album was released on April 13, 1981 and, from the start, it’s obvious that Billy has put together something special.   Written & Produced: Rick Coste Music Credits: Intro - Feelin Good by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3744-feelin-good License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Outro - Sax, Rock, and Roll by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4324-sax-rock-and-roll License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/   Visit https://JoyofVinyl.com  for more vinyl memories

Why Vinyl?

What is it about vinyl?  The sound?  Does it sound better than digital?  Perhaps.  What makes vinyl special is it’s an experience in and of itself.  Written & Produced: Rick Coste Music Credits: Intro - Feelin Good by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3744-feelin-good License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Outro - Sax, Rock, and Roll by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4324-sax-rock-and-roll License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/   Visit https://JoyofVinyl.com  for more vinyl memories

Pink Moon - Nick Drake

I had just entered my thirties when I was introduced to the music of Nick Drake.  Nick had only produced three albums before dying at twenty-six in 1974.  Nick's fans are a select group with secret knowledge of an artist who lived a brilliant and brief life, and left us with a collection of songs that contain magic, sadness, and a longing.  Written & Produced: Rick Coste Music Credits: Intro - Feelin Good by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3744-feelin-good License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Outro - Sax, Rock, and Roll by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4324-sax-rock-and-roll License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/   Visit https://JoyofVinyl.com  for more vinyl memories

Pictures at Eleven - Robert Plant

One afternoon, in the summer of 1982, I was listening to WBCN out of Boston when the DJ at the time played a song which had me transfixed.  The sweeping, snake-like guitar felt like a strange ride, and, combined with the vocals that chased it, the song was unlike anything I’d ever heard.  Written & Produced: Rick Coste Music Credits: Intro - Feelin Good by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3744-feelin-good License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Outro - Sax, Rock, and Roll by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4324-sax-rock-and-roll License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/   Visit https://JoyofVinyl.com  for more vinyl memories

The Doors

I was an awkward kid, just entering my teenage years, and I was looking for a hero.  I found him in the pages of 'No One Here Gets Out Alibe'. Jim Morrison was dark, poetic, and rebellious.  The Doors amplified the darker, Dionysian aspects of Jim’s personality and it was evident in their first self-titled album.
