Ship of the Week
USS Indianapolis, hull number CA-35, a Portland class heavy cruiser, was laid down on March 31, 1930, was launched on November 7, 1931, and was commissioned on November 15, 1932. She was 610 ft long and was outfitted with nine 8” guns.
On July 26, 1945, Indianapolis arrived at Tinian island, 80 miles north of Guam, carrying parts and enriched uranium for the atomic bomb Little Boy, which was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan two weeks later.
From there, she proceeded on to Guam, then headed for the Philippines to prepare for the invasion of Japan. Just after midnight on July 30, Indianapolis was struck by two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine. The explosions caused significant damage, and twelve minutes later, she sank. About 300 crewmen went down with the ship, with the remaining 900 left in the sea with minimal lifeboats.
Almost 4 days passed before the wreck was known, and by then, only 317 members of the crew could be saved.
In 2001 and 2005, expeditions attempted to located the wreckage of Indianapolis, but nothing confirmed to be part of the ship has been located. National Geographic has plans to again search for the wreck next summer.

The Japanese battleship Musashi was laid down on March 29, 1938, was launched on November 1, 1940 and was commissioned on August 5, 1942. Musashi was 800 feet in length and was outfitted with nine 18 inch main guns, the largest guns ever on a warship.
She served in various roles during World War I, but saw little action. That all changed in October 1944. On October 23, a US submarine sank the Japanese Cruiser Maya, and the over 750 survivors of Maya were transferred to Musashi. The following day, Musashi was spotted by a US recon plane. Soon after Musashi was attacked by eight dive bombers from the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. A furious attacked followed for hours, and by the time it ended, Musashi had been hit by 19 bombs and 17 torpedoes, and her decked had been strafed by multiple aircraft. That evening, Musashi went down, taking her captain and over 1000 crew down with her.
In March 2015, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen with a team of researchers located Musashi 3300 ft deep at the bottom of the Sibuyan Sea in the Philippines.

Ship of the Week
The German battleship Bismarck, named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, was laid down in Hamburg, Germany in July 1936, launched in February 1939, and commissioned in August 1940.
In May 1941, prior to the US entering World War II, Bismarck, under Capt. Ernst Lindemann, was assigned to a mission in the Atlantic, raiding supplies on the way to Great Britain. During this mission, Bismarck engaged and destroyed the British battlecruiser HMS Hood. As a result of this action, the Royal Navy followed with a furious pursuit of Bismarck that included dozens of warships. On May 26, Bismarck was struck by bomb from a British aircraft, and the next day was hit repeatedly by shells and torpedoes fired by the British fleet. Following this action, orders were given on board Bismarck to abandon ship and to set charges to scuttle the vessel. After Bismarck went down, many questioned whether she had actually been scuttled.
In June 1989, Dr. Robert Ballard located the wreckage of Bismarck. His expedition noted there was no evidence that the ship had imploded, as an intact ship that sinks would due to the tremendous pressure of the water against the air-filled hull. This evidence supports the theory that indeed the crew scuttled the ship before it sank.

Ship of the Week
The keel for the RMS Lusitania, a ship of the Cunard line, was laid at on June 16, 1904 on the bank of the river Clyde in Scotland. At 786 feet long, she was more than 50% longer than an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer. Lusitania was launched on June 6, 1906, and departed on her maiden voyage September 7, 1907, heading to New York under the command of Commodore James Watt.
After 200 additional voyages, Lusitania, with 1962 aboard, departed New York on voyage number 202 on May 1, 1915. Prior to the voyage, the German embassy, at the request of a number of German Americans, issued a warning that the waters around Great Britain were part of the war zone, and that vessels flying the British flag were subject to attack.
On May 7, 1915, as Lusitania travelled along the coast of Ireland, German submarine U-20 launch at torpedo, striking Lusitania on the starboard bow. The ship later sank, and 1,198 people lost their lives, including 128 Americans.
Germany claimed the ship was carrying munitions and flying a neutral flag, making it a legitimate target. The Cunard line denied this munitions claim. In September 1915, Germany declared that passenger ships were not to be attacked. Two years later, those restrictions were lifted, and the memory of the loss of the Lusitania was one of the factors that lead to the US entering World War I.
For years the British government maintained that the Lusitania carried no munitions. Then in 1982, when a salvage company formed plans to dive the wreckage, the British government warned the divers of the potential danger of munitions in the wreckage.

USS Utah, BB-31, a Florida-class battleship, was built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, laid down in March 1909 and completed in August 1911.
In April 1914, during the Mexican Revolution, Utah was one of two ships that delivered over one thousand Marines and Bluejackets to occupy the city of Veracruz.
During World War 1, Utah was assigned as a training ship and stationed in Chesapeake Bay. Subsequent to that assignment, Utah departed for Ireland and was assigned as the flagship of Battleship Division, which was covering convoys against attacks from German vessels.
In December 1941, Utah, now designated as AG-16, was again serving as a training ship, and was in port at Pearl Harbor. During the Japanese attack, Utah was struck by two torpedoes and sank, killing 64 crewmembers. The wreck is still in the harbor, commemorated by a memorial, and the ship’s bell is on display at the University of Utah.

Ship of the Week
In 1957, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, an investor in the iron and minerals industries, contracted Great Lakes Engineering Works design and construct the largest ship on North America’s Great Lakes, as large a possible to still be allowed passage through the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
Launched on June 7, 1958, the ship was named after Northwestern Mutual’s president, Edmund Fitzgerald. For 17 years, SS Edmund Fitzgerald transported iron bearing rock across Lake Superior from mines in Minnesota to mills in Detroit.
On the afternoon of November 9, 1975, Fitzgerald left Superior, Wisconsin under the command of Captain Ernest M. McSorley, heading for Detroit. The weather forecast included a storm that would pass south of Lake Superior by early the next morning.
At 7:00 pm, the national weather service issued gale warnings for all of Lake Superior. By the afternoon of November 10, winds as high as 58 knots were recorded on the lake, with waves as high as 25 feet. The last communication from Edmund Fitzgerald came at 7:10 pm, and she sank in Canadian waters a few minutes later. All 29 aboard were lost.
In 1976, Canadian songwriter Gordon Lightfoot wrote and recorded a tribute to the ship and her crew titled “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”.

Construction of the Naval battleship USS MAINE was authorized by the U.S. Congress on August 3, 1886, and Maine was commissioned nine years later on September 17, 1895. She was the first ship named after the state of Maine.
On December 15, 1897, USS Maine, under the command of Captain Charles Dwight Sigsbee, headed south toward Florida and her final destiny.
In January 1898, Maine was sent from Key West, Florida, to Havana, Cuba, on a mission to protect U.S. interests during the Cuba’s War of Independence, arriving on January 24. One February 15, while Maine was in Havana Harbor, an explosion on board Maine occurred, completely destroying the bow of the ship, and the remainder of the ship quickly sank. 266 people lost their lives, however, Captain Sigsbee and most of the officers survived, because their quarters were in the stern. On March 21, the U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry declared that the cause of the explosion was a naval mine
Not satisfied with the official cause, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover conducted private investigation in 1974. His results concluded that the explosion was instead caused by combustion of the ship’s coal, next to the ammunition magazine. The official cause will likely never be known for certain.
Arlington National Cemetery, in the US state of Virginia, is home to a memorial to the Maine, which includes the ship’s main mast and the remains of over 160 of the casualties of the Maine.

SS Athenia, a steam turbine transatlantic passenger liner, was built at Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Glasgow, Scotland, completed in 1923, Athenia operated between the United Kingdom and Canada for Anchor-Donaldson Line.
Under the command of Captain James Cook, Athenia left Glasgow for Montreal on September 1, 1939, carrying over 1100 passengers and crew. On the evening of September 3rd, Athenia was spotted by a German submarine. Believing she was a military vessel, the U-boat’s commander ordered torpedoes to be fired. Athenia took a hit on her port side in the engine room. The destroyer HMS Electra responded to Athenia's distress call.
Electra and four other ships began rescuing survivors, saving over 980. When Athenia sank the following morning, 117 passengers and crew had lost their lives.
There was much controversy following the sinking of Athenia, with many believing that the British sank their own ship to draw the US into the war, and several other outlandish theories. The truth was finally revealed to the world in 1946 during the Nuremberg trials that the U-boat had actually sunk her.

Ship of the Week
Construction of the US Navy airship USS Akron, ZRS-4, began on October 31, 1929 at the Goodyear Airdock in Akron, Ohio. Akron was a helium-filled rigid airship which was launched on August 8, 1931, and was tested on a number of occasions as a flying aircraft carrier. At 785 feet long, just 18 ft shorter than the Hindenburg, the Akron and it’s sister ship Macon are the largest helium-filled aircraft ever flown.
Following three separate accidents and subsequent repairs over two years, the Akron cast off on April 3, 1933, to operate along the coast of New England. Shortly after midnight on April 4, the airship encountered a severe thunderstorm off the coast of New Jersey. The ship broke up and sank into the Atlantic, killing all but 3 of 76 on board. Because of this disaster, life jackets were added to the Macon, and when it also went down in the ocean off the coast of California, only 2 of the 72 on board were lost.

Ship of the Week
The keel of the nuclear submarine USS Thresher, SSN-593, was laid at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire on May 28, 1958. When launched on July 9, 1960, Thresher, the second navy sub named after the thresher shark, was the fastest and quietest submarine in the world.
Though Thresher never saw any combat, it conducted a multitude of test of submarine design and weapons, thoroughly testing the new technology used in her construction.
On April 9, 1963, Thresher, with 129 aboard and under the command of Lt Cmdr John Wesley Harvey, left Portsmouth for dive testing. About 200 nautical miles off of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, she conducted two dive tests, then remained submerged overnight. When the tests commenced again on April 10, Thresher’s assigned submarine rescue ship received several garbled transmissions, then lost all contact. After a day of extensive searching by more than 15 navy ships, Thresher was officially declared lost.
The 129 lives were not lost in vain, as the loss of Thresher led to a multitude of new submarine safety standards and processes, likely resulting in saving thousands of sailors in the years since.

Captain of the Week
Sir Arthur Henry Rostron was born in Lancashire, England on May 14, 1869, and in 1884 he joined the Merchant Navy Cadet School Ship HMS Conway as a cadet. He joined the Cunard Line in January 1895 as fourth officer on the ocean liner RMS Umbria.
As a member of the Royal Naval Reserve, Rostron left the Cunard Line to serve with the Royal Navy during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. He then returned to the Cunard Line and in 1907 became first officer of the RMS Lusitania. He was transferred to the Bresica and promoted to ship's Captain the day before the maiden voyage of the Lusitania. Later he assumed command of the passenger liner RMS Carpathia.
On April 14, 1912, Carpathia was sailing from New York City to Austria-Hungary, when they received a distress call from RMS Titanic. Rostron set course at maximum speed to Titanic, ordering heating and hot water down in order to boost the ship’s steam. Carpathia reached Titanic in four hours, two hours after Titanic had gone down. The crew worked through the ice and brought 705 survivors on board.
Captain Rostron was praised for his leadership in reaching the Titanic before she sank, and in rescuing the survivors. He received the Congressional Gold Medal from the US Congress, and was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He retired in 1931 and died in November 1940.

Herbert G. Claudius was born in Omaha, Nebraska and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1930 with a BS degree in business and was Commissioned an ensign in the US Naval Reserve on June 19, 1930. At the rank of Lt Commander, on June 15, 1942 he was named the first captain of the patrol ship USS-PC-566, and was assigned to escort the passenger vessel Robert E Lee in the Gulf of Mexico.
On July 30, 1942, the Robert E Lee was attacked by U-boat U-166. The ship sank, killing 25 while over 400 survived. LT Commander Claudius and his crew fought back with both guns and depth charges. They observed oil and debris rising to the surface. When they didn't see the U-boat again, Claudius reported that it had been destroyed.
Because of their lack of anti-submarine training, the Navy did not believe Claudius’ report, and he was removed from command. In 2001, an oil company survey of the gulf discovered the wreckage of U-166. Then in 2013, an expedition by remotely piloted vehicles determined that the U-boat had been taken down by depth charges. On December 16, 2014, The US Navy posthumously awarded the Legion of Merit with a Combat ‘V” device to Claudius for his actions against U-166 during World War II.
