S3 Ep1: 6 Steps to Sustainable Leadership
6 Steps To Sustainable Leadership.
The more senior we are in our work the greater the stakes. The greater the pressure. The greater the impact. The greater the responsibility to yourself and others. It’s in this space where leaders can get hijacked by the stressful situations they face and this can show up as a lack of emotional control, team tension plus reduced agile thinking and less forward-focused decision making.
We are all triggered by stress and respond in different ways. A certain level of stress is normal and can actually help to engage and motivate us towards taking action. Those of you who follow my executive coaching practice will know I regularly talk about the importance of mental fitness. In my opinion, it is one of the most important self-management and leadership-effectiveness tools available to us. This 6-step guide to Sustainable leadership incorporates a number of mental fitness techniques and includes several tweaks you can start today.
We can become overloaded by well-being posts talking about stress silencing our success. And whilst stress shows up in most of my executive coaching conversations in some form, this stood out for me…
◾️ A recent study by the University of California, Berkeley found that there was an upside to experiencing moderate levels of stress.
◾️ Whilst we all know a certain level of stress is needed at times to get us to take action (think fight or flight response) this recent study actually found that the onset of stress can entice the brain into growing new brain cells responsible for improving memory.
◾️ These intermittent bouts of stress help us to keep alert, focused and able to perform better.
◾️ The challenge comes when we switch into a prolonged ‘always on' state of stress which can trigger autopilot leadership.
I would suggest that we don’t want to silence stress we want to supress its strength to ensure we come at our leadership in a sustainable way.
In my free ebook ‘6 Steps To Sustainable Leadership’, I look at the ways we can reset, reboot and rejuvenate our leadership. Incorporating practical techniques that connect our body and brain to accelerate our leadership effectiveness from our desk to the boardroom.

S2 Ep4: Is Your Leadership Style Connected To Your Personal Style? - With Lisa Wisdom
Can the Level of your Leadership Success Be Impacted By Your Style?
What does dressing for your diary mean?
How does your individual style talk to your leadership identity and the impact you want to have?
What does your professional identity say about who you are as a leader and as a person?
When leadership effectiveness is about sharing a vision, creating followers and influencing outcomes you might be surprised to hear that your personal style plays a part in your success.
In my latest packed podcast episode of The Success Saboteurs Series, I interview Fashion & Style Consultant Lisa Wisdom to discuss how our saboteurs can impact our style choices and our success. Lisa’s background is in the fashion industry having worked as a stylist and senior buyer for the last 20 years. She launched her own business Style With Wisdom several years ago.
This episode dives deep into understanding the power behind what we are wearing and the connection between styling and personal success. Finding your personal style is more than just wearing a great outfit that makes you feel good, it’s about defining your style personality that talks to who you are as a leader and what fits the vibe of the culture you are working in.
What we wear can have a huge correlation on how we are perceived, how we communicate and the overall success of a leader's career.
These last two years of working from home and now hybrid working have also added to the confusion.

S2 Ep3: Are You Clearly Communicating Your Value? - With Shola Kaye
Are You Making Your Value Clear?
How are you representing yourself?
Do you sit there in meetings thinking about the context without sharing your thoughts with the room?
Are you being clear on what it is you want to be known for and aligning it with what it is that you want to say?
One of the biggest hurdles I observe for leaders, as they transition to the next level of influence and decision making, is around executive communication - being clear on what they want to be known for, who they are as a leader and what value they bring to the table. You could package these points up and label them as executive presence.
In my latest NewlandRock Leadership Effectiveness Podcast I interview Shola Kaye, Executive Communication expert, coach and keynote speaker. We dive into this topic of leadership communication effectiveness and the saboteurs that limit our success in this space.
This episode is packed with golden tips and take always that we can all use in our presentations and meetings to increase our impact.
