John J. Hughes has been working in the field of emotional intelligence development and coaching since 2008. He is currently the president of E.I. Assessments, LLC, which provides executive coaching services focused on measuring and developing emotional intelligence skills in business leaders, managers, and professional staff. John works with companies to help them utilize emotional intelligence assessments, such as the EQ-i 2.0®, for leadership and career development.
John gained experience in management and leadership development at IBM before working as a senior internal HR consultant for the business side departments at the New York Times. Since 2010, he has been a faculty member and executive coach for the Partnership, an organization that works with corporations to attract, retain, and develop multicultural executives and professionals, as an executive coach.
Over the years, John has presented on the topics of emotional intelligence, inclusive leadership, and executive development at various conferences and events. He has spoken at the World Diversity Leadership Summit, the Institute for Supply Management, ESPN’s Women Leadership Conference, and MLB Winter Meeting. His clients include several major corporations such as COMCAST, MIT Lincoln Lab, Baystate Health, Amway, PepsiCo, Customers Bank, John Hancock, Fidelity Investments, Biogen, Parexel, Putnam Investments, TJX Companies, RISE Construction, Arrow Electronics, Diversified Search, Liberty Mutual, Vertex, Cardinal Health, Froedtert, and Cricket Communications. His non-profit clients include Catholic Charities of New York, the Jewish Daily Forward, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
In 2017, John coached participants in ADP’s Multicultural Leadership Development Program and presented on emotional intelligence and executive development at Prudential’s 11th Annual Black Leadership Forum Symposium. In 2019, he became an MHS Training Partner and began certifying HR professionals and coaches in the EQi 2.0 and EQ 360 assessments. Since 2021, John has been working as a senior lecturer with Texas A&M University’s Master of Engineering Technical Management program, which focuses on developing emotional intelligence using the EQi assessment.
