#165 Should You Move First or Build Your Business First? Here's How to Decide.

Should you move abroad now and figure it out as you go, or stay put until your business is “ready”? If you’ve been stuck between building income and starting your life overseas, this conversation will help you cut through the noise and choose the path that actually works for your reality. Key Takeaways: The “move first vs. build first” decision isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your energy, finances, and lifestyle constraints matter more than generic advice. Moving abroad before hitting $3–5K/month can sometimes be the faster, easier path, especially if your current environment is draining your time, money, or motivation. There are flexible “stepping stone” visa options and countries that let you live affordably while building your business. Building first makes sense if you have stability, time, and a strategic reason to wait; but it should come with a clear timeline, not an open-ended delay. No matter which path you choose, you need proof of concept: getting even $1 from a client shifts you from “idea” to “real business.” At the end of the day, the right path is the one that gets you moving, not the one that keeps you stuck “preparing” forever. Whether you decide to move first or build first, the goal is the same: create momentum and design a life that actually works for you. #164 Should You Stay or Go? This Family Created a Workbook to Help You Decide

What does it look like for a queer couple (with 2 kids and 3 pets) to move from Massachusetts to the Netherlands? What does it take to move abroad as a family in general?  Grover and Nova are offering an honest look at the decision-making process and the reality of starting over. In this episode, we discuss: Life as a queer family in the Netherlands How their quality of life has changed after moving What drove them towards leaving the U.S. Why they chose the Netherlands (and why not Amsterdam) Their Stay or Go Workbook (and how to decide if leaving the U.S. is right for you) Cost of living: rent, healthcare, and taxes Finding housing as immigrants with pets The DAFT visa and building a business abroad Settling in: the stressful first weeks vs. long-term rewards Starting over (or even choosing to do so) can be a process, and this is how that process led Grover and Nova to their dreamy new life in the Netherlands. #163 I Haven't Taken 3 Weeks Off in 10 Years. Here's My Vacation Experiment.

The irony of the Freedom Life entrepreneur realizing that she hasn't truly unplugged in a decade.  I’m sharing the uncomfortable truth behind my work habits, and the experiment I’m about to run: three full weeks completely offline. No Slack, no email, no “quick check-ins.”  Key Takeaways I haven’t taken a fully unplugged vacation in 10 years (and didn’t realize how much that mattered) “Half-working, half-living” has been my default, and it’s the reason everything feels harder than it should Building a Freedom Life means actually living it, not recreating hustle culture in a new country True rest isn’t just time off: It’s mental disconnection from responsibility You deserve time off, even (and especially) if you work for yourself This three-week break is my experiment in stepping fully away, and trusting that everything will be okay. Consider this your wake-up call: when was the last time you truly switched off? Not worked from a prettier location, but actually rested? #162 8 Cities, 3 Countries, 1 Toddler: Our Epic Scouting Trip Story

My family spent two months traveling across Greece, Italy, and Spain - visiting 8 cities with a toddler - all to figure out where in the world we actually wanted to live next. I’m breaking down the real experience of a scouting trip: how we chose destinations, what surprised us, the emotional rollercoaster of not finding “the one” right away, and how we ultimately made our decision. If you’re trying to choose where to move abroad (and feeling overwhelmed), this episode will help you think about it in a much clearer, more grounded way. What I cover: How we narrowed the world down using visas, lifestyle priorities, and real-life constraints Why doing “normal life” (not tourist activities) is the key to a successful scouting trip The emotional reality of not loving your first (or second… or third) destination Why some places felt amazing (hello, Chania) but didn’t work in real life The unexpected red flags we only noticed once we were there How we chose between Valencia, Málaga, and Chania (and what tipped the scales) The biggest lessons: what we did right, what we’d do differently, and whether or not you should do a scouting trip You’re not just choosing a city; you’re choosing a lifestyle. And often, the “right” place isn’t the most beautiful or exciting, or even the one you expected to love the most… It’s the one that fits your everyday life the best. #161 He Had No Business and a Hesitant Husband. 6 Months Later He Was Living in Amsterdam

Tad Hopp is joining us today! Tad is a sobriety coach for gay men, and he recently moved to Amsterdam on the DAFT visa. His story is about finally taking action after decades of waiting, getting on the same page as his husband, and building a new community abroad. Tad and I are covering: Why he finally made the move (after ~30 years) His husband’s initial hesitancy and how he gradually came around, especially after seeing Tad take action The right timing: How the current political landscape and new access to resources played their roles Why the Netherlands DAFT visa was the best path How relationships can take time to align for big changes The move isn’t always smooth: pushing through the “what have I done?” phase Community and putting yourself out there is everything once you make it over Big moves aren’t perfect. They're messy and uncertain, but waiting isn’t risk-free either. Tad’s advice: take the leap, figure it out as you go, and trust that it’ll all work out. #157 There Comes a Point Where You Either Move, Or You Admit You Won’t.

You may have to look inward and realize it’s not about visas, taxes, or possibility. It’s about deciding that this dream is going to become your life, and knowing that not choosing is a choice.  Today, we’re covering: Why familiar feels secure, but familiar doesn’t always mean stable or aligned. The real risk: Is moving the scariest option? Or is staying stuck in place? How saying “I need more money” keeps the dream distant. A clear income, visa, and tax plan makes it a calculated move, not reckless. Gathering information can become avoidance. You don’t need everything to be absolutely perfect, you need a clear plan and a date. Waiting can cost you. Waiting doesn’t build confidence. Action does. Bravery is doing it afraid (with support). The identity shift that comes with a big move: This isn’t about logistics. It’s about who you decide to be: the dreamer, or the one who moves. At some point, you stop asking “is this possible?” and start asking “is this who I am now?”  The only real question left is: Are you ready to decide? If so, Freedom Life Experience enrollment is closing tonight! Subscribe and Review If you loved this episode, please take a moment to subscribe and leave a review on Apple Podcasts! #155 What Staying in the US for One More Year Is Actually Costing You

Are you in the U.S. earning decent money, but somehow barely getting ahead? This episode breaks down the real financial (and beyond financial) costs of waiting to move abroad. Today, we’ll cover: The hidden cost of “someday:” how high rent, taxes, healthcare, and cars quietly drain your income. How the same salary can go 2-3x further abroad and accelerate savings, debt payoff, and wealth. Why it’s not just about money: it’s about time, energy, and quality of life. The simple difference between people who move and people who keep researching. Run the math. What is one more year actually costing you? #154 You Have 47 Tabs Open About Moving Abroad. Here's Why You Still Haven't Done It.

If you’ve been “researching” moving abroad for months (or years) and still haven’t made it happen, this episode is for you.  Spoiler: you don’t have a research problem. You have a decision problem. The over-research rabbit hole is a hiding place, and the first step out of the rabbit hole is clarity. Let’s get you to finally move from thinking to doing. In this episode, we unpack: The D.R.E.A.M. model How research is your safety blanket. You’re not looking for more information, you’re looking for certainty and permission. Neither exists. You’re asking the wrong questions. “What can I do?” leads to paralysis. “What do I actually want my life to look like?” leads to decisions. The real fear isn’t lack of info — it’s making the wrong choice. But staying stuck costs more than learning from a few mistakes along the way. Information doesn’t create confidence - plans do. Not deciding is still a decision. Ask yourself this: if years of research haven’t moved you yet, why would more research help you now? If you’re ready to stop thinking about moving abroad and actually do it, I’ll see you inside the Escape Plan Bootcamp. #153 When the World Feels Like It’s On Fire: Fear Is Not a Move Abroad Plan

Many Americans are feeling scared and desperate to leave the U.S. right now, and that fear makes sense. In this episode, we slow the panic and talk about how to move abroad intentionally, not reactively, so your move feels empowering instead of traumatic. We also discuss the important distinction between running away from the life you have versus running toward the life you want. In This Episode: Why fear-driven moves often feel heavy, rushed, and unsatisfying A powerful question to clarify whether you truly want to leave (or you feel like you have to) How shifting from “I have to leave” to “I want to leave” restores agency The “first-not-forever” strategy for moving quickly without losing alignment How to use stepping-stone countries, easier visas, and interim plans to stay on track You don’t need to flee your life. You get to choose it. And you deserve a move abroad that feels intentional, expansive, and truly yours. If you’re ready to create a calm, clear, actionable plan, support is available. #152 We’re Not Here to F Spiders: An Unhinged Tour of Australia (with My Husband, Chris)

Australian swearing, barefoot adults, kangaroo meat, and a husband who cannot be trusted with a microphone. We’re not here to f* spiders. Richelle and Chris break down the things you’d only know if you actually visited Australia - and yes, it gets weird fast. This is not a “should you move to Australia?” episode. This is the REAL deal: the food, the bugs, the language, and the cultural chaos no one warns you about. From eating kangaroo to drinking questionable wine out of a bag, this episode is fully unhinged (and deeply educational) in the most unserious way possible. This episode contains explicit language because Chris cannot be trusted not to swear, overshare, or explain Australian culture in a way that sounds sane. Topics include: Richelle’s dream of becoming the Beef Queen Barefoot adults just living life Meat raffles and why they’re a thing Bugs, spiders, snakes, and emotional damage Goon of Fortune (unfortunately real) Australian swearing (why “mate” is an insult, and what you actually call your friends) Richelle’s driving anxiety Why fairy bread is basically a sad Funfetti cupcake Australia is not for the weak. #151 Five Real Move Abroad Mistakes I See All the Time (That Cost People Time, Money, or Both)

There’s no shortage of advice online about moving abroad, and most of it sounds responsible and well-intentioned. But after helping hundreds of people plan real moves across different countries, visas, timelines, and life situations, I’ve noticed something important: Moves rarely fall apart because people aren’t serious enough. They fall apart because of a handful of very common, reasonable mistakes - the kind you don’t even realize you’re making. In this episode, I’m walking you through the 5 mistakes I see all the time: Why getting attached to one “dream country” too early can derail your options How considering rent instead of your entire budget leads to unnecessary financial panic How trying to DIY a visa creates more stress, delays, and expenses Why visas, taxes, and business structure must be looked at together (not one at a time) The simple reminder to keep you from postponing your move forever: you can always fly home. If any of these sound familiar, it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It means you’re doing something big, and you’re learning how to do it better. Remember: You don’t need perfection or certainty. Moving to another country requires flexibility, quality information, and intentional decisions made in the right order. #150 The Move Abroad Rules Are Fake (Here’s What Actually Matters)

What if the thing holding you back from moving abroad isn’t visas, money, or logistics, but rather, trying to follow someone else’s version of freedom? We’re unpacking why there’s no one “right” way to move abroad, and how to design a freedom-first lifestyle that actually fits you. In this episode, we break down: Why the popular “sell everything, move to Spain, digital nomad visa forever” narrative can be limiting How online stories create rules that don’t have to apply to your life A real client example showing how not choosing one country can be the most freeing move for some people The power of hybridity: splitting time between the U.S. and abroad  How to redefine success as freedom, flexibility, and choice (not permanence) There are no rules, only choices. The goal isn’t necessarily moving abroad forever; it’s creating your freedom life. Consider what you really want, then do just that. #148 Your 2026 Freedom Life Plan: How to Set Goals That Match Who You’re Becoming

It’s the first week of January and I love that fresh-start energy where everything feels possible. In this episode, I’m ditching hustle-y, pressure-filled goal setting and exploring a more aligned approach: becoming the person who naturally lives the life you want. Instead of forcing goals through willpower, I introduce a new approach—identity shifts, future-self alignment, and fun, low-pressure ways to make 2026 feel expansive, not exhausting. In this episode I share: Why traditional goal-setting often leads to burnout (and what to do instead) How identity—not motivation—is the missing link to real change Why moving abroad, scaling your business, or working less starts with who you believe you ar A reframe on vision boards that focuses on becoming, not achieving Goal Bingo: a playful, pressure-free way to design a life you actually want to live If you’re ready for 2026 to be about becoming, not hustling, then this episode is a must listen! #147 The Biggest Lessons of 2025, and the Intentions I’m Setting for 2026

In this annual New Year’s episode, I’m reflecting on a year that stretched me in every possible way—business growth, leadership, motherhood, health, and moving to Spain. I revisit my intentions from last year, share what actually happened behind the scenes, and break down the shifts, decisions, and hard truths that reshaped both my business and my identity. This episode covers: A candid recap of how 2025 radically challenged me personally and professionally What actually went into scaling my business this year The realities behind “money without hustle” How moving abroad, motherhood, and business growth collided—and what I learned about energy, health, and sustainability The vision and intentions I’m setting for 2026: more revenue, fewer hours, better health, and more freedom Why you don’t become “her” when you get there, but rather before you go If you’re entering a new season of growth and know something has to change to get there, this episode is for you. #146 When You’re Home for the Holidays and No One Really Gets You

Going home for the holidays can feel strange when you’ve outgrown the version of yourself that your family still sees. After living abroad for 13 years, I know this feeling well, and I’ve navigated uncomfortable conversations over the holidays quite a few times. Whether you’re building a business, planning a move abroad, or living a life that doesn’t fit the “traditional” mold, this episode is for you. This Episode Covers: Navigating holiday conversations when your life, business, or plans don’t fit the traditional path How to respond to family concern, judgment, or guilt trips with calm confidence (and without over-explaining) The identity shift that happens when you outgrow the version of yourself people still see Why you don’t need approval to change, move abroad, or build a life that feels aligned Subscribe and Review If you loved this episode, please take a moment to subscribe and leave a review on Apple Podcasts! #145 Meet Your 2026 Self: The Version of You Who’s Already Living Abroad and Thriving in Business

In this episode, I’m walking you through one of my favorite exercises from my recent retreat in Thailand — a guided visualization where you go meet the 2026 version of you who’s already living abroad, running a grounded and spacious business, and actually feeling the life you’ve been planning. We’re stepping out of strategy mode and into identity. Because you can have all the plans in the world, but if you don’t believe you can hold the life you want… you’ll sabotage it without even realizing it. Here’s what we do together in the episode: • You’ll take a 5-minute guided visit to your future self — their home, their energy, their lifestyle, and the message they have for you right now.  • We’ll unpack what came up (even if it felt random or surprising) and what it reveals about who you’re becoming.  • And finally, we’ll get clear on one simple, brave action you can take today to close the gap between you and the 2026 version of you who’s already living this life abroad. This is the perfect end-of-year moment to meet your future self — and start becoming them now, not someday. #144 The Holiday Reset: Why December Is the Best Time to Reinvent Your Business (and Your Life Abroad)

In this episode I dive into why December is the most powerful month to pause, reassess, and reset your business and lifestyle goals—especially if you’re dreaming of moving abroad or stepping into a more spacious way of working. I’m breaking down my own whirlwind year: nearly hitting seven figures, moving countries, traveling with a toddler, restructuring my team and navigating functional burnout. On paper everything looked incredible, but behind the scenes it forced a complete recalibration of how I lead, work, and live. You'll hear:  – The truth behind rapid growth, burnout, and why I wouldn’t repeat 2025  – How leadership shifts, delegation, and new structure rebuilt my business  – Why December’s quiet exposes misalignment and creates space for clarity  – What to leave behind this year and how to identify the wins that matter  – A practical audit to align your business with the lifestyle you want abroad This episode gives you the clarity and direction to close the year strong and step into 2026 with a plan for your life that finally feels aligned. #142 Moving to a French Fairytale Town… With a 90-Pound German Shepherd: Carissa’s Story

In today’s episode, I’m joined by Freedom Life Experience Alunni Carissa, who recently moved to a tiny French town straight out of Beauty and the Beast… with her very large German Shepherd. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to move abroad with a big dog: the paperwork, the flights, the kennels, the trains, the vet visits, the housing search, all of it — this is your episode. Carissa shares: • How she found her dream town in the Alsace region (and why Strasbourg wasn’t the vibe) • What it’s actually like to fly internationally with a large dog under the plane • The unexpected vet issues, paperwork drama, airport chaos, and train challenges • How her dog helped her integrate and get to know her new community • Why vibes matter more than checklists when scouting a country • The reality of finding housing in France when you have a big dog  • What made her go from “Maybe I’ll move abroad in 5 years” to “I’m doing this THIS Fall” This episode is part fairytale, part logistical saga, and part empowering reminder that you can build the life you want — even if you’re moving overseas with a giant dog in a muzzle who hates escalators. Carissa proves that with flexibility, resilience, and the right support, your dream life abroad is absolutely possible.
