The New Carp

A lot of us in the Chippewa Valley remember the radio station 99.9 The Carp, a "new rock" radio station that was unceremoniously taken off the air a few years ago and replaced with a "variety" radio station with an auto-DJ called BOB-FM. Now, faced with an ever-declining presence of rock on Top 40 radio and our sole "new rock" station gone, those of us in the Chippewa Valley who still yearn for new rock & roll are in much need of a vehicle for promoting new rock songs.

Enter The New Carp!

The New Carp is named as such in homage to 99.9 The Carp. I have fond memories of discovering some of my favorite bands on The Carp, and The Carp served as my gateway into the world of rebelliousness and abandon that is rock & roll, and I'm sure many others feel the same.

The New Carp will have some slight differences in format to the original Carp. Rather than focusing exclusively on hard rock, The New Carp will explore songs from all the various subgenres of rock, whether they be hard rock, soft rock, metal, southern rock, folk rock, dance rock, or what have you. New episodes will appear weekly, each roughly two hours long. Music will be from the year 2000 and newer, with the exception of some classic songs occasionally added to provide an "old vs. new" contrast (two such contrasts appear in this first episode) or when a classic artist is in the news. Each episode will be all music and no talk.

Requests will be accepted either in the comments section or via twitter #thenewcarp. The only guidelines for requests is that they be rock songs (of any subgenre) from the year 2000 or newer, and they need to be for sale somewhere (no bootlegs). It doesn't matter if they are singles or album tracks, national or local, major or indie.

Each week I will also feature the entire playlist on the blog with a track-by-track commentary.

Ep. 33: Prozac Days and Sleepless Hours

Episode in The New Carp
Here's this week's playlist: "Fortunate Son" - John Fogerty feat. Foo Fighters: Dave Grohl & Co. help John Fogerty turn this hard-rocking Creedence classic up to 11! "Age of Reason" - Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, and Geezer Butler are back with a brand-new album with Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine sitting in for drummer Bill Ward.  This track is about how the age we currently live in is filled with so much unreason. "I Ain't Superstitious" - Santana feat. Jonny Lang: An infectious infusion of blues and Latin rock, this may be Jonny Lang's best recording yet. "Promise" - Slash feat. Chris Cornell: The Soundgarden frontman joins Slash for an excellent power ballad. "Monkey Suit" - Elton John & Leon Russell: A fun, upbeat number from The Union. "Immigrant Song" - Karen O, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross: The Nine Inch Nails frontman and his collaborators cover a Led Zeppelin song for the Girl with a Dragon Tattoo soundtrack. "I'm Free (Live)" - The Who: A great live cut from their legendary Hull City Hall performance in 1970. "At Last" - Jeff Lynne: The ELO frontman puts his own unique spin on this Etta James blues classic. Alrighty, don't forget you can now "Like" The New Carp on Facebook!  Get updates on new episodes and all of the new things happening at The New Carp. Ep. 32: My Oklahoma Home Blowed Away

Episode in The New Carp
Here's this week's playlist: "My Oklahoma Home (Live)" - Bruce Springsteen & The Sessions Band: This one is dedicated to the victims of the Oklahoma tornadoes a couple weeks ago.  This song was written during the Dust Bowl, but could just as easily be about the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma. "Back in Black" - Santana feat. Nas: From Santana's latest duets album, this one featuring all covers.  I always thought "Back in Black" would make a good rap song, kind of like "Walk This Way", and although this isn't exactly as I imagined, it's still pretty good. "Bad Moon Rising" - Jerry Lee Lewis feat. John Fogerty: The Killer takes on Creedence on his latest album. "Gotten" - Slash feat. Adam Levine: A sweet love ballad from Slash and the lead singer from Maroon 5. "Fairweather Friends" - Queens of the Stone Age: On this track from their brand new album, Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters joins on drums, Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails joins on backing vocals, and Elton John joins on piano! "I Can't Explain (Live)" - The Who: In 2012, The Who finally released an album of their performances at Hull City Hall in 1970.  This is probably my favorite live performance of this song. "Let It Rock" - Jeff Lynne: The Electric Light Orchestra frontman brings us a solo version of a Chuck Berry cover. Ep. 31: Tell Them Go F ck Themselves

Episode in The New Carp
Here's this week's playlist: "Sunshine of Your Love" - Santana feat. Rob Thomas: Santana and Rob Thomas reunite to cover a Cream classic. "Hey Ahab" - Elton John & Leon Russell: A clearly Moby Dick-influenced song. "Roll Over Beethoven" - Jerry Lee Lewis feat. Ringo Starr, John Mayer, & Jon Brion: 74 years old, and The Killer is still rockin'!  Here he brings in some friends for a Chuck Berry hit. "Born on the Bayou" - John Fogerty feat. Kid Rock: Kid Rock inflects a little New Orleans flavor into one of Fogerty's Creedence classics. "Here's To Us" - Halestorm feat. Slash: The former Guns N' Roses guitarist helps out on Halestorm's latest single.  This song is perhaps most famous because it was covered on Glee. "Misery" - Maroon 5: A dance rock track from Maroon 5's last decent album. "Can't Get It Out of My Head (Live)" - Electric Light Orchestra: A live version of one of ELO's softer songs. Alrighty, don't forget you can now "Like" The New Carp on Facebook!  Get updates on new episodes and all of the new things happening at The New Carp. Ep 30: If It Wasn't For Bad, I'd Be Good

Episode in The New Carp
Here's this week's playlist: "If It Wasn't For Bad" - Elton John & Leon Russell: From an album they did together called "The Union". "Old Man" - Puddle of Mudd: Neil Young has been called the Godfather of Grunge, so it is only fitting that Puddle of Mudd gives us a grungey take on this Neil Young classic. "Livin' Thing (Live)" - Electric Light Orchestra: From their first-ever live album. "Dead Flowers" - Jerry Lee Lewis feat. Mick Jagger: Jagger helps out Jerry Lee on this Stones classic. "I Hold On" - Slash feat. Kid Rock: An "Only God Knows Why" style power ballad from Slash's first solo album. "Riders On The Storm" - Santana feat. Chester Bennington & Ray Manzarek: The Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek died last week.  This is one of his most recent recordings was this Doors cover he did with Santana and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. "Fire" - Bruce Springsteen: From Springsteen's "The Promise" album, this is a song he initially wrote during the "Darkness on the Edge of Town" sessions that became a hit for The Pointer Sisters. Ep. 29: Religion or Astronomy, Descartes or Deuteronomy

Episode in The New Carp
It's been a little crazy around here, so this episode's a little bit late, but it's a good one! "The Big Bang Theory Theme" - Barenaked Ladies: Big Bang Theory fans will instantly recognize this song, but may not know that there's a full-length version available to download! "Because The Night" - Bruce Springsteen: Orginially a hit for Patti Smith, this song was written by Springsteen during the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions, but finally released by Springsteen on his 2010 album The Promise. "Nightmare" - Avenged Sevenfold: This is probably my favorite song of theirs. "Dance the Night Away" - Santana feat. Pat Monahan: Santana teams up with the Train frontman for this Van Halen hit. "Rockin' My Life Away" - Jerry Lee Lewis feat. Kid Rock & Slash: The Killer re-records this classic trading vocals with Kid Rock and guitar help from Slash. "TNT" - Puddle of Mudd: A few weeks ago we had Anthrax's cover of this song, now here's Puddle of Mudd's take on this AC/DC classic. "Is This Love? (Live)" - Whitesnake: A great live track from their 2011 album, Live at Donnington 1990. "Evil Woman (Live)" - Electric Light Orchestra: ELO never sounding better. Ep. 28: Makin' the Stereo Bleed

Episode in The New Carp
This week we begin with a couple of Rolling Stones covers: "Gimme Shelter" - Puddle of Mudd: A faithful adaptation of this Stones tune. "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" - Santana feat. Scott Weiland: Santana teams up with the Stone Temple Pilots frontman for this Stones classic. "Mr. Blue Sky (Live)" - Electric Light Orchestra: A live version of perhaps ELO's most famous song. "Maybe Baby" - Justin Townes Earle: A southern rock take on a Buddy Holly classic. "Baby Can't Drive" - Slash feat. Alice Cooper, Nicole Scherzinger, Steven Adler & Flea: From Slash's first solo album, this track has a very classic rock feel that harkens back to his GNR days.  It features Alice Cooper sharing lead vocals with Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls, Steven Adler from Guns N' Roses on drums, and Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers on bass. "Too Close" - Alex Clare: This is the song from those Internet Explorer commercials.  It effectively fuses rock and dubstep to create a unique sound. "Fool For Your Loving (Live)" - Whitesnake: In 2011, Whitesnake released Live at Donnington 1990, a collection of live performances from the band in its prime.  Here's one of the best cuts. Ep. 27: Booze and Ladies Treat Me Right

Episode in The New Carp
This week's playlist is heavy on cover songs: "Let's Go All The Way" - The Wondergirls feat. Ashley Hamilton & Robbie Williams: This Sly Fox cover comes from Iron Man 3: Heroes Fall album, which features music inspired by the movie, although I think only one of the songs is actually in the movie itself (and not this one, unfortunately).  The Wondergirls are a supergroup composed of Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, Doug Ardito of Puddle of Mudd, Ian Astbury of The Cult, Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens of the Stone Age, Jay Gordon and Ryan Shuck of Orgy, Shannon Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars, Ken Andrews of Failure, and Martyn LeNoble of Porno for Pyros. "(It) Feels So Good" - Steven Tyler: In 2011, Steven Tyler released his first (and to date, only) solo single, which features former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger on backing vocals. "Oh Boy!" - She & Him: Zooey Deschanel and that dude she sings with give us a Buddy Holly cover. "Thunder on the Mountain" - Wanda Jackson: Wanda Jackson and Jack White bring us a cover of one of Bob Dylan's more recent hits. "Secret Love" - Stevie Nicks: Mick Fleetwood plays drums on this track Nicks originally wrote in 1976, but first recorded on her most recent album, In Your Dreams. "Roll Over Beethoven (Live)" - Electric Light Orchestra: A live version of ELO's signature Chuck Berry cover. "We're An American Band" - Rob Zombie: From Rob Zombie's latest album, this has to be my favorite cover of this Grand Funk Railroad classic. Alrighty, don't forget you can now "Like" The New Carp on Facebook!  Get updates on new episodes and all of the new things happening at The New Carp. Ep. 26: We Listen to the Radio

Episode in The New Carp
After an extended weekend, we're back!  Here's this week's playlist: "Slave to the Grind" - Halestorm: An even harder rocking take than the Skid Row original. "Shooting Star" - Puddle of Mudd: An interesting Bad Company cover. "Dead City Radio and the New Gods of Supertown" - Rob Zombie: The latest single from Rob Zombie!  This one took a little bit to grow on me, but the chorus is catchy. "Death Valley" - Fall Out Boy: Another great job of blending pop and rock into a new sort of dance rock sound. "Shakin' All Over" - Wanda Jackson: This song by the Queen of Rockabilly (and produced by Jack White) played over the closing credits of the movie Bridesmaids. "Everyday" - Fiona Apple & Jon Brion: A cute little Buddy Holly cover. "Don't Bring Me Down (Live)" - Electric Light Orchestra: This is my favorite song of theirs from their first ever live album! "Never Gonna Change" - SuperHeavy: A soft rock track from the supergroup featuring Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, and A.R. Rachman. Episode 25

Episode in The New Carp
We have very hard rock-centric episode this week with brand-spanking new songs from Fall Out Boy and Black Sabbath! "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" - Halestorm: An epic metal Beatles cover. "All Right Now" - Puddle of Mudd: A grungey cover from a song by Paul Rodger's band Free. "All For the Love of Rock & Roll" - KISS: Cowbell fans will get their fix here!  A great tribute to rock music. "Save Rock & Roll" - Fall Out Boy feat. Elton John: Fall Out Boy return to blur the lines of rock and pop in this excellent duet with Elton John. "God Is Dead?" - Black Sabbath: A triumphant return from the forefathers of heavy metal!  If the rest of their new album is anything like this song, it'll be as good as anything the released in their 1970's heyday! Episode 24

Episode in The New Carp
This week's episode is heavy on supergroups and duets: "Stand In The Storm" - Meat Loaf feat. John Rich, Li'l Jon, & Mark McGrath: Originally released as a charity single under the name Backbone while these four were on Celebrity Apprentice, this track now appears on Meat Loaf's latest album, Hell In A Handbasket.  Meat is currently doing a Farewell Tour in England. "Big Foot" - Chickenfoot: From the latest album from a supergroup featuring Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony of Van Halen, Joe Satriani, and Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers. "I Can't Take It No More" - SuperHeavy: Another upbeat track from the supergroup featuring Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, Joss Stone, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, & AR Rachman. "Hunger Strike" - Halestorm: A cover of a song by Temple of the Dog, a group made up of members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam before they became famous. "Losing My Religion" - Dia Frampton: The Voice season 1 runner-up covers REM.  This one doesn't have any connection to supergroups or duets; I had planned on playing it earlier but it got lost in the shuffle, so I wanted to play it before I forget. "Moves Like Jagger" - Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera: The first commerically released single from two The Voice coaches.  Obviously this song went on to be a massive hit.  This is also Maroon 5's last song with some semblence of rock, it contains references to The Rolling Stones not only in their lyrics, but also in its beat which is strikingly similar to "Miss You".  On their next album, they completed their slow descent into becoming a pop group. "Princess of China" - Coldplay feat. Rihanna: A beautiful song, and Rihanna is an underrated singer. If only she'd be given more good material. "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" - Puddle of Mudd feat. BC Jean: A cover of the classic Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks duet. Here's this week's playlist: "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" - Halestorm: If anyone should cover Heart, it should be Halestorm.  Lizzy Hale has the pipes to sing Ann Wilson, and the band rocks this one out harder than the original. "Love Is A Battlefield" - Cee Lo Green & Vicci Martinez: Vicci and her The Voice coach duet on this Pat Benatar classic.  Check out the wicked opening guitar solo. "Paradise" - Coldplay: I think each Coldplay studio album gets better than the last. "The Joker" - Puddle of Mudd: A grungey take on Steve Miller Band. "Little Black Submarines" - The Black Keys: A great slower track off of their El Camino album. "Pineapple Express" - Huey Lewis & The News: After seeing this video on April Fool's Day, I knew I had to play this song.   "Jailbreak" - Anthrax: An anthemic Thin Lizzy cover. Here's this week's playlist: "You're So Square (Baby, I Don't Care)" - Cee Lo Green: Cee Lo isn't the first person you think of when you think of rock n' roll, but here he gives us a faithful interpretation of a Buddy Holly classic. "Bad Romance" - Halestorm: This Grammy-winning metal band covers Lady Gaga. "Lonely Boy" - The Black Keys: A popular single from their most recent album, El Camino. "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" - Coldplay: The first single from Mylo Xyloto. "Dog Days Are Over" - Vicci Martinez: Cee Lo's The Voice season one finalist.  I actually prefer her vocals on this song over Florence + The Machine (blasphemy!) "(You Will) Set the World On Fire" - David Bowie: Destined to be a future single from Bowie's new album. "Smokin'" - Anthrax: An excellent Boston cover. "Energy"  - SuperHeavy: A very upbeat track from a supergroup consisting of Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, and A.R. Rachman. "Everybody Wants You" - Puddle of Mudd: A grungey hard rock take on Billy Squier. Here's this week's playlist: "TNT" - Anthrax: This week Anthrax released an EP of covers of hard rock and metal songs!  This, of course, is a cover of an AC/DC hit. "Walk" - Foo Fighters: This Grammy-winning song from the Foo's latest appeared during the closing credits of "Thor". "It's So Easy" - Paul McCartney: McCartney is a huge Buddy Holly fan and bought the rights to his entire catalog. "She's So Mean" - Matchbox 20: A catchy new single from a group that's become a perennial favorite. "Boss of Me" - David Bowie: From his new album, The Next Day. "I Won't Give Up" - Jason Mraz: A slow, pretty little song from folky singer-songwriter Jason Mraz. "Further On Down the Road" - Eric Clapton: A reggae-infused soft rock song from Clapton's new album, Old Sock. Episode in The New Carp
First off, thanks to everyone for making our St. Patrick's Day special our most downloaded episode yet by far! Now we're back to our regular format of new rock music.  This week was a great week for new rock!  New albums from Dave Grohl, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, and David Bowie were released, and a new album from Jimi Hendrix last week!  Here's this week's playlist: "God Save Rock N Roll" - Kid Rock: Released on 2012's Rebel Soul, this song sounds like it could have come from Rock N Roll Jesus. "Because We Can" - Bon Jovi: This is my favorite song that was released this week.  The lyrics might be kind of corny, but it's as anthemic as any great Bon Jovi song. "From Can to Can't" - Dave Grohl, Corey Taylor, Rick Nielsen & Scott Reeder: This is a track from the soundtrack to Dave Grohl's documentary Sound City.  Here, the Foo Fighters frontman teams up with Slipknot and Stone Sour singer Corey Taylor and Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen. "Boy Division" - My Chemical Romance: The first single from MCR's Conventional Weapons. "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)" - David Bowie: I didn't include this song in a playlist when it was first released as a single because it took a while to grow on me.  Give it a few listens and I'm sure you'll find it a worthy addition to Bowie's repertoir. "Hear My Train A-Comin'" - Jimi Hendrix: A different version of this song was also released on 2009's Valleys of Neptune.  I think I prefer this version because, while it's shorter, it features more solid vocals from Hendrix. "Goodnight Irene" - Eric Clapton: Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, Eric Clapton releases a cover of an old Irish-sounding folk tune written by African-American blues musician Leadbelly. St. Patrick's Day: Top 10 Celtic Rock Songs of All Time

Episode in The New Carp
For those getting ready to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, I bring you the top 10 celtic rock songs of all time!  If you like your rock to come with bagpipes and dulcimer's, then this is the playlist for you! 10. "Zombie" - The Cranberries: Okay, so no bagpipes or dulcimers here, but Dolores O'Riordan's Irish accent is so thick that no St. Paddy's Day is complete without The Cranberries. 9. "I'm Gonna Be (The 500 Miles)" - The Proclaimers: Heavy on dulcimers and Irish harmonies, this is a St. Paddy's day delight! 8. "Mull of Kintyre" - Wings: Despite the fact that this song is about Scotland, this song has been included rather than McCartney's "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" because this song includes bagpipes whereas the other does not. 7. "Have I Told You Lately" - The Chieftains feat. Van Morrison: We included Rod Stewart's version of this song in our Valentine's Day special, and we bring it back again for St. Paddy's Day, but this time with the Chieftains performing and original singer Van Morrison taking over lead vocal duties. 6. "Kiss Me I'm Shitfaced" - Dropkick Murphys: Dropkick Murphys are a Boston-based punk rock band that has a bagpipe player in the band!  They celebrate their Irish heritage enthusiastically, and here we have the makings of a hilarious Irish drinking song. 5. "Rhythm of My Heart" - Rod Stewart: Speaking of Rod Stewart, here he is again, this time with a song that opens with bagpipes and closes with an Irish barroom chorus. 4. "What Makes the Irish Heart Beat" - Jerry Lee Lewis feat. Don Henley: I didn't know either Jerry Lee Lewis or Don Henley were Irish, but there you have it!  Some great bagpipes and fiddles from a pair you perhaps wouldn't expect it from. 3. "American Land (Live)" - Bruce Springsteen & The Sessions Band: A song so celtic, it could only come from an album titled Live In Dublin!  This song was taken from Springsteen's Seeger Sessions tour, which, oddly, was more popular in Europe than America.  Later, a studio version of this song would appear on Springsteen's Wrecking Ball album. 2. "It's A Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock N' Roll)" - AC/DC: Based on the music video for this song, I would guess that the bagpipes in this song are supposed to be Scottish rather than Irish, but my ignorance regarding the cultural differences in the United Kingdom has led me to include this song anyway.  Besides, Dropkick Murphys once covered this song, so how Scottish could it be?  Either way, this is the quintessential example of great bagpipe rock. 1. "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya" - Dropkick Murphys: An Irish folk song given the punk rock treatment from a bagpipe-playing, Boston, MA-based band?  Check, Check, Check, and Check!  This song checks all the right boxes and makes for the perfect celtic rock song and a must-play song for every rock fan this St. Patrick's Day! Honorable Mention: Conway Twitty's rockabilly version of "Danny Boy".  The arrangement of the song isn't exactly celtic rock, but it is a great rock n' roll take on a classic Irish folk tune.
